Ethan dreamed of drowning.

Cold water filled his lungs. Darkness pressed against his eyes. Vincent's hands around his throat, squeezing, squeezing.

He woke up with a gasp.

This time, the room was different. Smaller. Darker. And he could hear fighting in the distance, explosions, screams, the crash of buildings collapsing.

“You've been asleep for four hours,” the Academy seal informed him. “The estate is under sustained assault. Third wave initiated forty-seven minutes ago.”

Ethan sat up, expecting pain from his injuries. Instead, he felt... whole. His shoulder was healed. The cuts and bruises from the Juggernaut fight were gone. Even his exhaustion had faded to a manageable ache.

"How"

“Academy medical protocols,” the seal explained. “Your body has been flooded with restorative energy while you slept. Current status: 73% combat effectiveness.”

The building shuddered. Dust rained from the ceiling. Another explosion, closer this time.

Ethan stood, looking around the room for his clothes. He found them cleaned and folded on a chair, along with something new, a jacket made of dark material that seemed to absorb light. He touched it and felt power humming through the fabric.

“Xore weave combat gear,” the Echo explained. “Your mother left it for you. It'll provide some protection against energy attacks.”

He dressed quickly and opened the door to chaos.

The corridor was filled with smoke. Emergency lights flickered red. Wounded defenders limped past, supported by healers who looked ready to collapse themselves.

Ethan grabbed one of them. "What's happening?"

"Whitmore's forces, they've surrounded the entire estate. Seventy, maybe eighty of them. They're using siege weapons to pound us into rubble." The man coughed, blood flecking his lips. "Lady Lydia is holding the main gate, but we can't…"

An explosion cut him off. The ceiling collapsed.

Ethan moved on pure instinct, grabbing the injured man and diving sideways. Tons of stone and timber crashed down where they'd been standing, sealing off the corridor.

"Thanks," the man gasped.

"Get to the medical wing," Ethan ordered. "I'm going to help my mother."

He ran toward the sound of heaviest fighting, his enhanced perception mapping the estate's layout as he moved. The seal fed him tactical data, enemy positions, structural weak points, optimal routes.

He emerged onto what had been the main courtyard and stopped dead.

The estate was dying. Half the buildings were on fire or reduced to rubble. Bodies, defenders and attackers alike littered the ground. And at the gates, his mother fought alone against a wall of Abyssal Guards.

She was magnificent and terrible. Her silver hair whipped around her like a storm. Each gesture sent waves of force that shattered enemy attacks. But she was surrounded, outnumbered ten to one, and Ethan could see the toll it was taking. Her movements were slower. Her barriers is getting weaker.

“Where is Selene?”

“Northwest quadrant,” the seal answered his unspoken question. “Fighting against six Stage Three opponents. She cannot disengage without allowing them to breach the inner defenses.”

So his mother was alone.

Ethan ran.

An Abyssal Guard saw him coming and fired, some kind of energy weapon that left a trail of corrupted light. Ethan's body moved before his mind could process the threat, dodging sideways, the blast missing him by inches.

He closed the distance and struck. His fist connected with the guard's chest, and the impact sent the man flying backward into two of his companions.

“Good,” The Echo approved. “But you're telegraphing your moves. Tighten your form.”

Ethan didn't have time to tighten anything. Three more guards converged on him, their weapons crackling with yellow energy.

He fought on instinct and the combat forms embedded in the seal. Block. Strike. Dodge. Each movement felt clumsy, unpracticed, but the raw power of the Xore compensated for his lack of technique.

One guard went down with a shattered jaw. Another collapsed when Ethan's kick fractured his ribs. The third managed to land a glancing blow that sent electricity screaming through Ethan's nervous system.

He stumbled, vision swimming. The astral-weave jacket absorbed most of the attack, but enough got through to make his muscles spasm.

The guard raised his weapon for a finishing shot.

A blade of starlight took his head off.

Selene appeared beside Ethan, her white robes stained with blood and ash. "Still alive. Surprising."

"Where were you?" Ethan gasped.

"Keeping twenty Abyssal Guards from flanking your mother's position. You're welcome." She grabbed his arm, steadying him. "Can you fight?"

"Yes."

"Then stay close and try not to die. We're making a push for the gates."

They ran together toward Lydia's position. Selene's blade sang through the air, each strike precise and lethal. Ethan followed in her wake, using his raw power to compensate for his lack of skill.

They reached Lydia just as her barrier shattered under concentrated fire.

"Mother!" Ethan threw himself in front of her, his arms raised instinctively.

The Xore responded.

Energy erupted from his chest, forming a dome of silver light around all three of them. Corrupted energy from a dozen weapons struck the barrier and dissipated harmlessly.

Ethan stared at his hands, shocked. He hadn't known he could do that.

“Neither did I,” the Echo admitted. “The seal must have unlocked defensive protocols.”

“Correct,” the Academy seal confirmed. “Host demonstrated sufficient control for basic barrier manifestation.”

Lydia grabbed his shoulder. "Ethan, you can't maintain that for long. Your meridians."

"I know." He could already feel the strain, his Xore burning with the effort of maintaining the barrier. "How many are left?"

"Too many." Lydia's face was grim. "They brought everything. This isn't a raid anymore. It's an extermination."

"Then we make them pay for it," Selene said coldly. She raised her free hand, and the air around her began to crystallize with frost. "Ethan, drop the barrier on my mark. Lydia, hit them with everything you have left."

"That'll exhaust both of us," Lydia protested.

"Then we'd better make it count. Ready?"

Ethan's barrier flickered. He was running out of power fast.

"Now!" Selene screamed.

Ethan dropped the barrier. Selene and Lydia unleashed their attacks simultaneously.

Ice and silver light erupted outward in a devastating wave. Abyssal Guards screamed as the combined assault tore through their ranks. Ten fell. Twenty. The survivors scattered, their formation broken.

But the victory was pyrrhic. Both women collapsed, drained to the point of unconsciousness.

Ethan stood alone, facing the remaining enemies. His Xore was nearly empty. His body trembled with exhaustion. But he raised his fists anyway.

"Come on then," he growled. "Who's next?"

The Abyssal Guards exchanged glances. They'd lost their numerical advantage. Their strongest fighters were dead or fled. And the boy who should have been easy prey had just helped kill thirty of their brothers.

They began to retreat.

Ethan didn't lower his guard until the last of them disappeared into the darkness beyond the shattered gates. Then his legs gave out and he sank to his knees beside his mother.

She stirred, her eyes opening. "Did we... did we win?"

"For now," Ethan said.

Selene sat up slowly, her movements stiff. "This was just a probing attack. Testing our defenses. The real assault will come soon."

"Then we need to leave," Lydia said. "Get Ethan somewhere safer."

"There is nowhere safer," Selene replied. "Whitmore’s reach extends across every city in the Western Territories. The only place he can't easily strike is…"

"The Academy," Ethan finished.

Selene nodded. "Your training was supposed to start next month. But given the circumstances, I'm moving up the timeline. Pack what you need. We leave at dawn."

Ethan looked at the burning ruins of the estate, at the bodies of people who'd died defending him, at his mother's grief-stricken face.

Twenty-four hours ago, he'd been nobody. Now he was the heir to a bloodline powerful enough to make enemies wa

ge war just to see him dead.

There was no going back. No returning to his old life.

Only forward. Into whatever hell awaited at the Academy.

"The Hardy legacy has survived worse than this.""Has it?" Ethan gestured at the destruction. "How many estates have you lost to Whitmore? How many people have died for a war I didn't even know existed until yesterday?"Lydia's expression tightened. "Forty-three estates over thirty years. Seven hundred and twelve confirmed deaths." She met his eyes. "I've kept count of every single one. Every sacrifice made to keep you hidden, to

The woman from the battle, Selene Arkwright sat in a chair beside his bed, reading something on a translucent screen that floated in the air before her. She didn't look at him."Where am I?"
