The Alpha Werewolf, a beast named Fenris who had claimed the lives of thirty vampire scouts in the last month alone, paused. It tilted its massive, fur-covered head. The scent of the boy had changed. A moment ago, he had smelled of fear and stale, weak lineage. Now, the air around him crackled with the ozone of a coming storm and a metallic tang so sharp it made the wolf’s gums ache.

Lucian felt a strange sensation in his chest. It was as if his heart, which had been a dormant lump of lead for forty years, had suddenly become a furnace. The System interface flickered in his peripheral vision, displaying a scrolling list of attributes he had never seen before.

Target identified: Silver-Mane Alpha.

Threat Level: High.

Recommended Action: Aggressive counter-maneuver.

The wolf didn't wait for Lucian to analyze his new reality. It lunged, a blur of silver fur and yellow teeth. In the past, Lucian’s eyes would have failed to track such speed. He would have been shredded before his brain could register the attack. But now, the world slowed. Each frame of the wolf’s movement was highlighted in a faint red glow by the System’s tactical overlay.

Lucian stepped to the left. It was a small movement, but it was perfectly timed. The wolf’s claws whistled through the air where his throat had been a millisecond prior.

Passive Skill Triggered: Flash Step.

Stamina Cost: 5 units.

Agility temporarily increased by 20 percent.

Lucian looked at his hands. They weren't shaking anymore. He felt a cold, clinical detachment. He reached out and grabbed the wolf’s thick fur as it sailed past him. With a strength that should have been impossible for his slender frame, he swung the three-hundred-pound beast into the stone battlement.

The impact was like a thunderclap. The stone cracked, and the wolf let out a pained whimper that quickly turned into a guttural growl. It scrambled to its feet, shaking its head. The amber glow in its eyes intensified. This was no longer a hunt; it was a duel.

You... the wolf rumbled, its voice a gravelly mess of human speech and canine snarl. You are not the runt. What did you swallow, little leech?

Lucian didn't answer. He couldn't. His throat felt tight with the sheer volume of power rushing through him. He saw a blue bar at the bottom of his vision depleting.

Warning: Adrenaline Burst fading. Time remaining: 45 seconds.

He had to finish this. Lucian ran forward. He didn't use the refined, elegant martial arts taught at the Academy. He ran with the raw, desperate hunger of a starving man. The wolf swiped at him, but Lucian dived under the blow, his fingers digging into the wolf’s wounded flank.

System Notification: Blood Extraction initiated.

Target species: Lycanthrope.

Quality: High.

As Lucian’s fingers pierced the hide, he felt a rush of warmth. It wasn't just blood; it was essence. He felt the wolf’s memories of the hunt, the feel of the forest floor, and the raw, unbridled rage of the pack.

The Alpha screamed. It tried to shake him off, but Lucian was like a parasite. He felt his own muscles knitting back together. The deep gashes on his chest, inflicted moments ago, closed up, leaving only faint white scars.

Stop! the wolf cried out, snapping its jaws inches from Lucian’s face.

Lucian looked into the beast’s eyes. For the first time in his life, he didn't feel like the prey. He felt like the apex. He twisted his hand, and a surge of black energy from the System traveled through his arm and into the wolf’s body.

Skill Unlocked: Neural Shock.

Effect: Paralyzes the target’s nervous system for 3 seconds.

The wolf froze mid-lunge. Its muscles locked, and it tumbled forward, sliding across the slick stone. Lucian stood over it. He could hear the sounds of battle escalating below in the courtyard. The sirens of the castle were finally wailing, and the heavy thud of vampire knights’ boots echoed in the corridors.

He didn't have much time. If the noble instructors saw him like this, they wouldn't celebrate his success. They would fear him. They would dissect him to find out how a trash talent suddenly became a god.

Finish the kill, the System prompted. Rewards for Alpha-tier essence: 500 Experience Points, 1 Random Lycan Trait, and 10 Shadow Credits.

Lucian knelt beside the paralyzed wolf. He felt a flicker of hesitation. He had never killed anything before. But then he remembered the way Elara had laughed at him. He remembered the weight of Valerius’s boot on his ribs. He remembered forty years of being the dust under the feet of the powerful.

He plunged his hand into the wolf’s chest.

Target eliminated.

Experience gained: 500.

Level Up! Level Up!

Current Level: 3.

New Trait Acquired: Night Vision Plus. You can now see heat signatures through solid walls.

Bonus Reward: The wolf’s soul has been converted into a Soul Shard.

Lucian stood up as the wolf’s body began to wither, turning into gray ash that scattered in the wind. All that remained was a small, glowing amber crystal in the center of the floor. Lucian picked it up. It was warm to the touch.

Behind him, the heavy oak doors to the battlements burst open. Instructor Valerius stood there, surrounded by a squad of elite guards. Their crimson capes billowed in the night air. They looked at the empty battlements, then at the cracks in the stone, and finally at Lucian.

Lucian stood there, his clothes torn and soaked in blood that wasn't his own. He looked perfectly calm.

Where is the intruder? Valerius demanded, his eyes darting around. We heard the howl of an Alpha.

He fell, Lucian said quietly. His voice was different now. It had a resonance, a weight that made the guards subconsciously tighten their grip on their halberds. Over the edge. I think I got lucky.

Valerius walked to the edge and looked down into the dark abyss of the castle moats. He saw nothing but mist. He turned back to Lucian, his eyes narrowing. He stepped closer, sniffing the air.

You smell of death, boy. More so than usual. And your eyes... why are they turning gold?

Lucian felt a surge of panic. He forced himself to look down at the floor. The System responded instantly to his mental distress.

Trait Masking activated.

Cost: 1 Mana per minute.

Appearance reverted to Trash Talent status.

The golden hue in his eyes faded back to a dull, lifeless gray. The predatory aura vanished. He slumped his shoulders and let his bottom lip tremble, playing the part of the terrified failure once again.

I... I don't know, sir, Lucian whimpered. It was so big. I just hid behind the pillar and it tripped. I think it was injured already.

Valerius spat on the ground. Of course. Only a miracle or a mistake could keep you alive. You are a disgrace to the Malphas name. Guards, take him to the infirmary. If he’s not dead by morning, send him to the kitchens. He’s clearly not fit for the front lines even as fodder.

The guards grabbed Lucian’s arms. They weren't gentle. They dragged him toward the door, mocking him under their breath. Lucian didn't fight back. He kept his head down, watching the translucent screen that only he could see.

Quest Generated: The Silent Rise.

Objective: Reach Level 10 without the High Nobles discovering the System.

Reward: Bloodline Evolution - Lesser Vampire to True Noble.

Failure: Soul Extraction and permanent deletion.

Lucian allowed himself a small, invisible smile. Let them think he was trash. Let them think he was lucky. While they prepared for a war of swords and fangs, he would be playing a different game entirely. He would eat their world from the inside out.

As he was led down the dark stone stairs, he heard the System’s final chime for the night.

Tutorial Phase complete.

Welcome to the Eternal Night, Lucian. Try not to die too quickly.

The morning that followed the departure of High Priest Valerius did not bring the warmth of a true sun. Instead, a thick, grey mist rolled in from the Dead Sea, clinging to the jagged obsidian ribs of the ruined capital. The golden glow of the Imperial Spear was gone, leaving behind a sky that looked like a bruised canvas. Lucian sat on the edge of the Primal Gear’s housing, his violet-scarred arm resting on his knee. He felt hollow, a vessel that had been filled with too much lightning and was now struggling to hold its shape.Marek and the others were busy. They were scavenging the remains of the Iron Vanguard’s armory, stripping the enchanted plate for raw materials. Without the System’s active connection, the runes on the armor were just dead ink, but the steel was still better than anything the human miners had ever touched.Lucian, Elara called out. Her voice was thin, echoing through the damp stone of the catacombs. You need to see this. The Archive didn't just crash when I

  • Chapter 29: The Apostate and the Void

The golden pyramid shattered into a billion caustic shards of light that hissed like falling stars as they struck the obsidian ruins of the capital. High Priest Valerius stood in the center of the celestial wreckage, his golden scepter cracked and bleeding a rhythmic, digital pulse of amber fluid. For the first time in three centuries of service to the Great Ledger, the Priest felt the cold, creeping sensation of a calculation that returned a null value. He looked at Lucian, or what remained of the boy who had once been a kitchen thrall.Lucian was no longer a physical entity. He was a jagged silhouette of violet static, a tear in the fabric of the world that refused to be mended. The black blade in his hand hummed with a frequency that made the very air groan. He was the Null Point, a concentrated singularity of everything the System had ever discarded. Every failed experiment, every forgotten soul, and every piece of trash code was screaming through his lungs. You are a blasphemy

  • Chapter 28: The Architecture of Erasure

The sky above the Malphas territory did not turn to night. It did not fade into the gentle violet of a natural dusk. Instead, the golden spear of the Imperial ship pierced the cloud layer and the entire firmament became a polished, agonizing mirror. The clouds themselves were burned away by the sheer presence of the Deletion Array. This was not a weapon of fire or physical impact. It was a geometric manifestation of the Church’s will. Massive, translucent cubes of golden light began to descend from the belly of the ship. They rotated with a silent, mechanical grace, their edges humming with the frequency of a thousand chanting monks.Lucian stood in the center of the plaza. He watched as the first cube touched the top of the South Sentry Tower. There was no explosion. There was no sound of crumbling stone. The tower simply ceased to be. The golden geometry passed through the obsidian structure and the tower was replaced by a hollow, flickering void of white static. The data of the s

  • Chapter 27: The Iron Tide and the Golden Gaze

The city of Malphas was no longer a structured hive of obedience. It was a forge of chaotic rebellion. As the High Lord fell from the heavens in a trail of dissipating smoke, the atmosphere of the capital did not settle. Instead, the air grew heavy with the scent of ozone and the rhythmic clanking of heavy plate. The Iron Vanguard was moving. These were Level 25 knights, the elite enforcers of the inner circle. Their armor was not mere steel. It was etched with runes of absolute compliance that pulsated with a deep crimson light. They did not feel fear. They did not feel the confusion of the commoners. They were the final hard coded defense of a dying regime.Lucian stood on the shattered balcony of the North Tower. His golden light flickered like a dying lamp. Every fiber of his digital being screamed for rest, but the System provided no reprieve. His left eye mapped the city in a grid of heat signatures and threat levels. He saw the Vanguard emerging from the subterranean barracks

  • Chapter 26: The Sundering of the Sky

The Root did not collapse quietly. When Lucian struck High Lord Malphas with the Mother’s Edge, the impact was a conceptual rupture that tore through the very bedrock of reality. The grey void of the System Core shattered like a glass bell, and the two entities were expelled back into the physical realm with the violence of a collapsing star. One was a god of old shadows and the other was a sovereign of new light. They erupted through the floor of the ruined ballroom in a pillar of violet and gold fire that reached the clouds. The shockwave leveled the remaining spires of Castle Malphas. It sent boulders the size of carriages tumbling into the city below. Dust and pulverized obsidian choked the air and turned the mid-morning sun into a bruised, sickly purple orb.Sync Rate: 51 percent.Status: Physical Manifestation Unstable.Warning: Localized reality failure imminent.Lucian stood in the open air. The fall did not end with a crash. Instead, the sensation of gravity simply dissolved, replaced by a thick, viscous silence. Lucian floated in a space that was neither light nor dark—a shimmering grey expanse where the air tasted like ozone and static. Above him, the ruined foundations of the Blood Vaults were a distant, jagged memory. Below, there was only the Root.Sync Rate: 33%.Warning: Physical body is transitioning into pure data.Note: You are entering the System Core.Lucian looked at his hands. They were no longer flesh and bone; they were composed of millions of flickering violet pixels, shifting and re-forming with every thought. He was no longer a vampire. He was a piece of rogue code drifting through the source of the world."System," Lucian tried to speak, but his voice came out as a burst of binary noise.
