Chapter 1
Painful Death
A young man, about 23 years old, stood amidst a grisly scene—several bodies lay lifeless around him, their blood pooling on the cold, desolate ground. The crimson stains on his own clothes and skin told a story of violence, desperation, and betrayal. It was deep into the night, and the eerie silence of this desolate area cloaked the horror from prying eyes.
He staggered slightly, struggling to remain conscious, his breaths shallow and uneven. His eyes, heavy with exhaustion and disbelief, locked onto the woman he had once loved, the woman he had hoped to marry. But she had betrayed him. Drugged, bound, and handed over to the people who sought his life the most, he had been nothing more than a pawn in her game. His family’s wealth and influence were known far and wide, striking fear into anyone who dared oppose them. Yet, behind the scenes, an internal war raged between his father and his uncle. Though uninterested in the power struggles, he had always been vigilant, aware that his status as the firstborn son—the heir—made him a target. What he hadn't foreseen was betrayal from the one he trusted the most. The day had started innocently enough, a date with his fiancée. But it had ended in a nightmare. Drugged and dragged to this forsaken place, he awoke to find himself surrounded by armed men, with her smirking beside them. Torture followed, knives cutting into his flesh, pain threatening to steal his sanity. But they had underestimated him. Through sheer willpower and the martial arts training instilled in him since childhood, he broke free of his bonds and fought back. Now, the lifeless bodies of his captors bore testament to his desperate struggle. Yet his victory was hollow. His body was broken, riddled with cuts and bruises. Blood seeped from his wounds, his life slipping away with every passing second. The worst of his injuries were the two gunshot wounds in his chest—courtesy of his uncle, who had shown up to ensure his demise. 'This is a joke,' he thought bitterly. 'I was such a fool... trusting her, falling for her lies. I should’ve seen this coming.' As his vision blurred and darkness began to creep in, he saw the smug faces of his enemies. His uncle stood over him, gloating. “Hmph. You’re tougher than I thought,” the older man sneered. “Not bad for a coward’s son. If only you weren’t his brat, I might’ve made you useful.” His fiancée stepped closer, her eyes narrowing as she examined the bloodied dagger he had hurled at her in his final act of defiance. He had missed by mere inches. “What a waste,” she murmured before turning to her truw lover with a sadistic smile. “Say, why don’t we give him a parting gift?” “I thought you’d never ask,” his uncle replied with a chuckle. The last thing he saw before darkness claimed him was the two of them, locked in a passionate kiss over his broken body. --- ‘So this is death, huh?’ His consciousness drifted in an endless void. There was no pain now, only a deep, gnawing regret. ‘I was played like a fool by the person I loved the most. What a pathetic way to go.’ He thought of his parents. How would they react when they discovered what had happened? Would they mourn him, or would his death only fuel the chaos within his family? ‘I didn’t even accomplish anything in my life… I died at 23, just another victim of this wretched world. I couldn’t even take those snakes with me.’ He sighed—or at least, he imagined doing so. ‘If I could do it over, I’d make them pay. I’d live my life differently. I wouldn’t trust so easily. But second chances don’t exist, do they?’ Just as despair threatened to consume him, a golden screen appeared before him, illuminating the void with its radiant light. Words in bold white letters flashed before his eyes. [Potential successor found] [Do you wish to accept? If you do, you will be transmigrated into a new world.] [Yes] [No] [You have 10 seconds to decide.] His thoughts ground to a halt. ‘What the hell is this?’ [8] ‘A successor? Transmigration? This is straight out of a fantasy novel!’ [6] ‘Wait… is this real? Or some kind of trick?’ The timer continued to count down, and a feminine voice—melodious and otherworldly—resonated within his mind. ‘You must decide. Accept, and you will live again. Decline, and your existence ends here.’ ‘What happens if I choose “yes”?’ he asked, still skeptical. ‘You will enter a new world with a new identity. Your fate will be yours to shape.’ [3] He hesitated for only a moment longer before making his decision. ‘I accept!’ [Congratulations! The transmigration process will now begin.] [Searching for a suitable realm...] [Found.] [Searching for a suitable planet...] [Found.] [Searching for a suitable body...] This part took longer, and anxiety began to creep in. ‘Please, not a girl… or an animal. Definitely not something weird like a broomstick!’ Finally, the screen updated. [Found.] [Fusing host soul with new body...] [Complete.] [Initializing system...] [Complete.] [Welcome to *The Successor System.*] [You will be transmigrated shortly.] A blinding white light engulfed him, erasing all doubts, fears, and regrets as he hurtled toward his second chance.Expand

'W-When did he get in front of me? Wasn’t it just a rock? Did he use transformation magic to lower my guard?' His mind raced, golden eyes staring into his. But then, out of the corner of his vision, he caught something strange—A rock suspended mid-air where the masked figure had stood. His pupils shrank.'No! He switched places with it. Fuck!'Those were his last thoughts before a fist cloaked in mana aura crashed into the orbital region of his face. The impact was brutal. His body lifted from the ground, hurled like a ragdoll. He slammed through trees, bounced off rocks, and tore through brush, his body breaking everything in his path until he finally stopped—hundreds of meters away.Art lowered his fist, flexing his knuckles with a detached expression. He had only put around sixty percent of his strength into that blow, careful not to kill the opponent outright. Was I too lenient? That won’t be enough to kill him. Contestants here are very tough. Maybe I should’ve punched harder.'

“We’re almost there, just a bit farther,” Rena thought, her fist tightening as they neared the light beam.By some miracle, no one had attacked them yet.Rena felt skeptical about the deal she’d made with him. What use was it if they weren’t going to be ambushed anyway?'Maybe I should’ve been braver and come alone,' she thought. Part of her almost hoped for an attack.Art’s thoughts, meanwhile, were different.Quite a few people are waiting to ambush others. 'The red ribbons aren’t enough,' he mused. He’d sensed several presences since they’d neared the beam, but none had attacked.'It’s probably the mask. Is it really that intimidating?' He barely felt its effects now, forgetting how much it had initially unnerved him.He glanced at Rena, walking close behind. 'She made a smart choice. Her clothing wouldn’t have saved her from them all.'Should I ignore him after this? Rena wondered. He seems dangerous. I’ll wait and s—“Wait!” Art voiced out, startling her.She glanced around urgen

Viera's boots crunched softly over the leaf-strewn path, the beam of light clearly visible ahead. This part of the forest was relatively quiet compared to others. She kept her pace steady, her blood-red hair swaying with each step, with her senses sharp as ever.A red ribbon was tied to each of her wrists. She had a few tears on her clothes, which came as a result of fighting 3 C-rank beasts. It was more of a one-sided fight, but she didn’t come out unscathed. Or, rather, her clothes, as there wasn't a single bruise or blood stain on her skin.On her shoulder was the number '4' displayed. Being the daughter of the current family head immediately translates to superior genes and attribute affinity. So among her peers, she was a class above. Already able to easily handle C-rank beasts at just nineteen. She stared at the beam of light, only about five minutes away at her current pace.It seemed that this part of the test was already over for her, but then all of a sudden, she stopped

An arc of violet light tore through the air, intercepting the wind blade aimed at Sten’s head. The force dispersed into glowing particles, fluttering like ash. Miri's arm was still raised from the parry, her sharp gaze already tracking the assailant. The girl who ambushed them had hoped to injure one of them from the get-go, but both attempts failed."Sten, stay out of this no matter what. I'll be taking this one.""What? Wasn’t I the one just attacked?" Sten frowned, but seeing the excitement in his childhood friend's eyes, he just let out a long sigh and lowered his hand. "Make it quick. We don’t have much time."Leaves fluttered as a shadow dropped from above, silent as a falling feather. She landed lightly on the dirt road, rising into view. Slender, young, dressed in mostly black. She held no weapon, but the way the wind curled around her feet said enough.‘I’m going to need your ribbons,’ the girl said. Her eyes didn’t leave Miri’s.Before Sten could scoff or open his mouth, Mir

*Sigh*'I almost went overboard. I need to learn to control this better.' Art thought walking towards the beam of light with her following a meter behind him.Earlier, he only wanted to intimidate her a little as she was beginning to get cocky. But he released too much of the mask's power. So far, they had yet to encounter anybody, but they knew that it would only be a matter of time. The once relatively quiet forest now had many echoes and reverberations of sounds, probably being made by people crashing elsewhere. Her gaze kept drifting around from tree to tree anxiously. The silence between them made things even more tense for her.She mustered up the courage to talk to him again. This time, being very picky with her words."I'm sorry, I didn't get to introduce myself. My name is Rena. Do you have a name or anything I can call you by?"-Silence-"Are you from around here?"-Silence-'He's ignoring me.' She sighed internally. 'It's best if I remain quiet as well.'Just then, he sp

She just casually mentioned this to him, but she didn’t expect him to show this much interest in it.'Wait! This might be my chance.' She came to a realization."Yes, that’s it. That’s what he called it. I believe we have more of it back home." Although she felt bad, as she wasn’t sure of this herself, she had to convince him to help her.Art began walking once again—but this time, it was towards her. He stopped several inches away."You don’t mind if I get a more detailed look to be sure?" Art asked."Huh?!" she exclaimed, but with another look in his eyes, her expression changed. "O-Of course not, go ahead," she said, getting flustered.Art's gaze wandered across her clothes. She turned her eyes away as she wasn’t used to being stared at like this. But occasionally, she stole glances at him, curious about what he was thinking. The gown was truly crafted from a unique, high-grade material. Green and white hues wove together seamlessly, the colors shifting subtly with movement—like mi
