"Come on! Just a little closer, you overgrown rock-hided mutt!" Leon shouted.
"[Warning: Physical parameters of host are currently insufficient for direct confrontation with a Tier 2 entity. High probability of critical damage or death to the host,]" the Sin Eater System chimed.
"Shut up, System! I don't have a choice! If I run, it'll tear Jax to pieces!" Leon yelled back.
"Look out, Leon! It's leaping! Get out of the way!" Jax screamed.
"Get back, recruit! That's a Tier 2! You'll get yourself slaughtered in a single bite!" Captain Vargas roared, slamming his shield. "I'll hold this bastard off! Jax! Grab Leon and get up to the battlements right now! The green bastards are scaling the eastern wall, and the guards up there are dropping like flies!"
"On it, Captain! Come on, Leon, get up! Get your damn legs moving!" Jax shouted, pulling him upward.
"Damn it... my body... it's so sluggish," Leon muttered, stumbling. "Why won't my legs move faster? My mind knows exactly where to step, but my muscles feel like lead."
"We don't have time for you to complain about your muscles! Just run! Can't you hear the screaming from above?" Jax yelled. "If they take the wall, we're trapped!"
"Help! Someone help me! They're coming up! They're already at the top of the parapet!" Thomas shrieked from the battlements.
"That's Thomas! He's on watch up there! He's going to get eaten alive!" Jax cried out.
"Thomas! Hold your ground! We're coming!" Leon yelled.
"Leon! Jax! Thank god you're here!" Thomas sobbed, trembling. "The goblins... they're climbing the ladders! Look at them! There are too many of them!"
"Don't look down, Thomas! Just thrust your spear when they reach the top of the parapet! Don't let them step on the stone!" Leon commanded.
"I can't! My hands won't stop shaking! Look at their eyes, Leon! They're burning red! They want to tear us apart and eat our flesh! I shouldn't have signed up for this! I was just a farm boy last week! My mother told me to stay in the village!" Thomas whimpered.
"Get a grip, Thomas! If you retreat, they'll flank the captain downstairs, and everyone in this camp will die! Jax, take the left ladder! Thomas, stay behind me and watch my back!" Leon ordered.
"Are you crazy, Leon? There are at least three of them crawling up this center ladder right now! I can barely hold my own side!" Jax yelled, thrusting his spear. "How can you be so calm? You're acting like you've done this a hundred times!"
"Keep your center of gravity low, Jax! Goblins are short; they will try to slash at your hamstrings or slip under your guard! Keep your spear tip pointed at their throats, not their chests!" Leon advised.
"Since when did you become a veteran instructor, Leon? Just a few hours ago you were shivering in your cot!" Jax yelled back.
"I told you, it's survival instincts! Now shut up and hold that ladder!" Leon snapped.
"[Target Locked: Low-level Goblin. Host combat rating: F. Target combat rating: F-minus. Probability of success: 92%. Recommendation: Utilize precise anatomical strikes to conserve stamina,]" the system chimed.
"F-minus? Perfect. I can handle a weakling like that," Leon whispered.
"Keke! Shaaah!" A green head popped up.
"Die!" Leon yelled, thrusting his weapon.
Leon slipped.
"Leon! Your footing!" Jax screamed.
The goblin cackled.
"Watch out! It's going for your neck!" Thomas screamed.
"Argh! My shoulder!" Leon winced. "Damn it... my reaction time is too slow! This body is so weak!"
"Hold on, Leon! I'm coming to help!" Jax shouted.
"No, Jax! Keep holding your ladder! Don't you dare leave your post! If they get over, we all die!" Leon barked. "I told you, I've got this!"
"How do you have this?! You're bleeding, and that monster is laughing at you!" Thomas wailed.
"Just watch! Come on, you green piece of trash, try it again! I'm right here! Take another swing!" Leon provoked.
The goblin lunged.
"Too easy," Leon muttered. "Step left... and thrust!"
The spear pierced its throat.
"Gurrrg..."
"Did... did you actually kill it?" Thomas whispered.
"I told you I had it," Leon panted. "It's just a low-level beast. They rely on numbers, not strength."
"[Target eliminated. Initiating Sin Eater absorption protocol. Absorbing residual soul energy from Low-level Goblin. Status: Active,]" the system's cold voice echoed.
"Ngh! What... what is this?!" Leon gasped.
"Leon? What's wrong? Did it poison you with that rusty knife?" Jax asked in concern.
"[Acquiring Passive Trait: 'Goblin Reflexes'. Commencing muscular restructuring to align with acquired trait. Warning: Restructuring will cause brief, acute physical pain,]" the system declared.
"Ah! Aaagh!" Leon groaned. "It feels like... like my veins are on fire! My muscles... they're tearing!"
"Leon! Get up! This is no time to collapse! There's more coming!" Thomas panicked. "Look! Another one is climbing!"
"System! Can I delay the integration until after the battle?" Leon asked internally.
"[Negative. Active integration cannot be paused once initiated. Estimated completion time: Eight seconds. Please endure,]" the system replied.
"Eight seconds? Fine! Do whatever it takes! I'd rather take physical pain than let these green bastards slit my throat!" Leon gasped.
"You don't look fine! Your skin is flushing red, and your eyes... are they glowing?" Jax yelled.
"I said I'm fine!" Leon growled, standing. "In fact... I've never felt better. The fatigue is completely gone."
"Wait... how are you moving so fast? You were just limping a second ago!" Thomas asked, blinking.
"My body... it's so much lighter," Leon whispered. "The heaviness of this rookie body... it's vanished."
"Oh no. No, no, no! Look at that!" Thomas suddenly screamed. "Look at the size of that hand!"
"What is that... a wooden club? It's as big as a tree trunk!" Jax gasped.
A Hobgoblin appeared.
"GROOOOAAAR! Soft human meat! Crushing time!"
"A Hobgoblin..." Jax whispered. "That's at least a Tier 1 monster! We can't fight that with iron spears!"
"We have to retreat! Leon, Thomas, we have to fall back to the captain right now before it crushes us!" Jax yelled.
"No. If we run, they take the wall, and the captain gets flanked from above," Leon said. "We stand and fight."
"Are you insane, Leon?! That thing will crush your skull with one swing! Look at the size of that spiked club! We can't fight that!" Thomas cried out. "We're just recruits! We're not heroes!"
"Just stay back and keep the ladders clear," Leon said, stepping forward. "Leave this one to me."
"Leon, don't do this! You just got lucky with the first one!" Jax pleaded. "Don't throw your life away!"
"[Warning: Hobgoblin approaching. Host status: Upgraded with 'Goblin Reflexes'. Combat capability: Optimal for counterstrike. Target weak spot: Underneath the jaw,]" the system chimed.
"Let's see what these reflexes can do," Leon muttered, smirking. "Come on then, you ugly brute. Let's see if that thick skull of yours can actually feel pain."
The Hobgoblin swung its club.
"Leon!" Jax and Thomas screamed.
"Too slow," Leon whispered. "My turn."

The Shadow of the Hero
The courtyard of the garrison was a symphony of splintering wood and rhythmic, wet tearing. Leon moved like a specter of violence, his boots sliding through a slurry of mud and viscous black ichor. Beside him, Jax swung his shield with a frantic, uncoordinated desperation, his breath coming in sharp, serrated gasps."Leon! Behind you! Left!" Jax screamed, his voice cracking with the strain of holding his position.Leon pivoted without looking, his short-sword whistling through the air in a perfect horizontal arc. The blade carved through the neck of a lunging Rift Stalker before it could close the distance. "Don’t watch the ones in front, Jax! Watch the shadows! They move through the dark!""I can't see them! It’s too chaotic! How are you even spotting them?" Jax yelled, parrying a snap from another creature’s mandibles."Focus on the rhythm! Every time they strike, there's a hum in the air! Listen for it!" Leon barked, his eyes darting across the courtyard, his veins pulsing with the
Framing the Innocent
The heavy iron door of the barracks slammed shut, leaving Leon alone with the silence. The muffled cries of Thomas being dragged down the corridor toward the isolation chambers grew fainter, finally swallowed by the thick stone walls."He's screaming my name, System. Why is it so quiet in here?" Leon whispered, gripping his bed frame until his knuckles turned white."[Host, focus. The soul capacity expansion is initiating. Do not lose your grip on reality,]" the voice responded, indifferent to the suffering outside."Reality? My reality is being rewritten by a god-complex machine," Leon muttered, his teeth gritting together as the sensation of boiling lead poured into his veins. "Did I just trade a boy's life for a few more points in my status bar?""[You traded a variable for a constant. The power you are receiving is permanent. The boy was temporary.]""Cold. You really are just a piece of programming, aren't you?" Leon gasped, falling to his knees as a surge of violet lightning dan
The Price of Innocence
The clinic smelled of acrid herbs and stagnant blood. Leon sat on a wooden stool, his palms wrapped in rough, stained linen, watching the door. The air inside the garrison was suffocating; it was the heavy, static silence that preceded a lightning strike.Kael’s parting words echoed in the small, dim room. Every recruit is being questioned."Leon? You in here?"The voice was thin, reedy, and frantic. Thomas poked his head inside, his face pale and blotchy from crying. He hurried over, ignoring the healer who was busy with a row of wounded soldiers further down the hall."Thomas? What are you doing here? You should be in the barracks resting," Leon said, keeping his voice low."I can’t sleep, Leon. They’re everywhere. The MPs—they’re walking up and down the halls with lists. I heard them talking. They think it was an inside job by someone who knew the guard rotations for the inner keep," Thomas whispered, his hands trembling. "They’re checking everyone’s lockers. They searched Jax’s st
The Crimson Toll
The air in the clearing turned icy as the two-headed monstrosity let out a synchronized, earth-shaking roar. A nearby recruit, paralyzed by the sheer malice radiating from the beast, didn't even have time to scream before a massive, crimson-furred paw swept sideways.CRACK.The soldier was sent hurtling through the air, his body colliding with a pine tree with a sickening thud before sliding into the muck, lifeless."No! Stay focused, Leon! It’s too big!" Thomas wailed, his voice rising to a frantic, broken pitch."Don’t just stand there, Thomas! Get behind that ridge! If you stay in the open, it’ll swat you like a fly!" Leon shouted, his heart hammering against his ribs like a trapped bird."What about you? You can't fight that thing alone! It’s a Tier 3, Leon! You’re just a recruit!""Just move! Do you want to be meat on its plate?""I... I can't leave you, Leon! You're already hurt!""Move, or I’ll kill you myself before the bear gets the chance! Go!"Thomas scrambled backward, his
Shadows and Claws
"Get back, Thomas!" Leon screamed, his voice cracking against the damp, heavy fog."Leon! Above you! Look out!" Thomas shrieked, pointing upward with a shaking finger."I see him!" Leon yelled. He planted his back foot deep into the mud and thrust his iron spear upward with both hands. "Come on, you overgrown mutt!"The massive alpha Shadow Wolf slammed down. Its giant, yellow fangs clashed directly against the iron tip of Leon's spear.CRACK."Gah! Damn it!" Leon groaned, his knees buckling under the sheer, crushing weight of the beast. The impact sent a violent vibration rattling up his arms, turning his elbows to jelly."Leon! It's going to crush you!" Thomas screamed, frantically waving his sword but too terrified to step closer. "Push it off! Push it off!""I'm trying!" Leon grunted, his teeth grinding together as he stared into the wolf’s saliva-dripping jaws. "Get out of the way, Thomas!""[Warning: Structural integrity of standard iron spear has dropped to thirty percent. Shaf
Unlocking the Viod
"How much further, System?" Leon whispered, his voice barely a breath in the chill night air as his boots lightly touched the gravel below Kael's office window."Answering. Two hundred meters outside the western perimeter wall," the mechanical voice echoed directly in his mind. "The ambient magic density there is exceptionally low, minimizing the risk of detection during the limit break sequence.""Good," Leon muttered, pulling his hood over his face and pressing into the deep shadows of the armory wall. "My chest still feels like it's on fire from that shadow meld trick. I can't afford to get caught now.""Recommendation: Host must maintain a steady pace. The southern patrol route will be active in exactly seven minutes," the system chimed."I'm moving, I'm moving," Leon whispered, darting across the empty courtyard.Within minutes, he slipped through a gap in the wooden palisade, his movements unnaturally fluid thanks to his newly acquired goblin reflexes.
