"How much further, System?" Leon whispered, his voice barely a breath in the chill night air as his boots lightly touched the gravel below Kael's office window.

"Answering. Two hundred meters outside the western perimeter wall," the mechanical voice echoed directly in his mind. "The ambient magic density there is exceptionally low, minimizing the risk of detection during the limit break sequence."

"Good," Leon muttered, pulling his hood over his face and pressing into the deep shadows of the armory wall. "My chest still feels like it's on fire from that shadow meld trick. I can't afford to get caught now."

"Recommendation: Host must maintain a steady pace. The southern patrol route will be active in exactly seven minutes," the system chimed.

"I'm moving, I'm moving," Leon whispered, darting across the empty courtyard.

Within minutes, he slipped through a gap in the wooden palisade, his movements unnaturally fluid thanks to his newly acquired goblin reflexes. The thick, dark canopy of the southern forest quickly swallowed him, blocking out the faint moonlight.

"This should be far enough," Leon said, stopping in a small clearing surrounded by ancient, twisting pines. He reached into his linen tunic and pulled out the glowing amber sphere. "Look at this thing. It's beautiful. But keeping it is a death sentence."

"The Purified Stone of Light contains high-grade celestial energy," the system explained. "Crushing it will allow the Sin Eater to harvest and corrupt the mana, breaking your current F-rank physical limitations."

"And what about the camp? The barrier?" Leon asked, staring at his reflection in the crystal's surface. "Without this, the miasma will seep into the valley. People will die, System. Jax, Thomas, Captain Vargas... they'll all be exposed to the corruption."

"The survival of the host is the priority," the system replied coldly. "The Hero Ares will destroy this entire region in twenty years regardless. Sacrificing a few soldiers now is a logical necessity for your ultimate victory."

"You're a heartless bastard, you know that?" Leon muttered, his grip tightening around the warm stone. "But I didn't come back to the past to play the saint. I came back to win."

"Highly pragmatic," the system noted. "Please crush the core to initiate the sequence."

"Here goes nothing," Leon whispered. He squeezed his fist with all the strength his rookie body could muster.

Crack. Shatter.

"Agh!" Leon gasping, dropping to his knees as the glowing amber shards dissolved into a thick, swirling black mist that aggressively forced its way into his chest.

"Energy absorption initiated. Converting light energy to dark soul fuel," the system announced. "Reconstruction of physical vessel beginning now."

"Damn it! It burns!" Leon screamed, clawing at the dirt as his veins turned a deep, glowing violet. "My blood... it feels like boiling acid!"

"Endure, host," the system urged. "Your muscle fibers are being torn and rebuilt at a cellular level. Strength and agility parameters are currently skyrocketing."

"It hurts... worse than Ares's sword!" Leon gasped, his body convulsing on the damp forest floor. "Agh! Stop! I can't... I can't take this!"

"Structural integrity of the soul container is currently at eighty-five percent," the system reported. "Acquiring active capability: 'Shadow Beast - Swift Step'. Do not lose consciousness, or the energy will tear your vessel apart."

"I'm not... going to die here!" Leon roared, his eyes flashing with a dark, predatory light. "I survived... twenty years of war! I can survive... this!"

"Integration complete," the system's voice finally smoothed out. "Host vessel successfully upgraded. Physical level cap shattered. All attributes have been reallocated."

"Hah... hah... hah..." Leon collapsed onto the damp leaves, his breath coming in ragged, steaming gasps in the cold air. "Is... is that it?"

"Affirmative," the system replied. "Your agility and strength have been permanently enhanced. You are now capable of utilizing high-speed maneuvers."

"Good," Leon whispered, slowly pushing himself up, feeling an incredible, foreign power surging through his limbs. "Because I think... I'm going to throw up."

The next morning, the barracks door was kicked open with a thunderous, splintering crash.

"Get up! Every single one of you, on your feet now!" Captain Vargas screamed, his face flushed with rage, his sword drawn.

Thomas tumbled out of his bunk, clutching his blanket and shivering. "What? What's happening? Are we under attack again?"

"It's worse than an attack," Vargas barked, slamming his fist against the wooden support pillar. "The Purified Stone of Light has been stolen from the Commander's study. The protective barrier is already failing."

"Stolen?!" Jax gasped, sitting up quickly and looking over at Leon's empty cot before noticing Leon standing near the door. "But who could get past the guards? That's impossible!"

"Tell that to the empty pedestal!" Vargas spat, his eyes bulging. "The miasma is rolling into the southern valley as we speak. The beasts in the Blackwood Forest are losing their minds. We have an emergency on our hands."

Leon stepped forward, keeping his expression entirely blank and his voice steady. "What are our orders, Captain?"

"Commander Kael wants an emergency scouting party sent into the deep woods immediately," Vargas said, pointing a thick finger directly at Leon. "Leon, you're in charge. You showed you have a brain yesterday. Take Thomas and three other recruits and get out there."

"Me?!" Thomas shrieked, his face turning paper-white. "But Captain, I'm just a recruit! Why can't the veterans go? The Blackwood Forest is a death trap without the barrier!"

"Because the veterans are busy fortifying the inner walls, you idiot!" Vargas roared. "Do you want those monsters sliding over the walls while we sleep? No! Now grab your gear and get moving!"

"I'll lead them, Captain," Leon said, stepping forward to block Thomas from Vargas's wrath. "Thomas, grab your sword. Let's not keep the beasts waiting."

"Are you crazy, Leon?" Thomas whispered, his hands trembling violently as he buckled his scabbard. "We're going to die out there. We don't even know what's waiting for us in that fog."

"I know exactly what's waiting," Leon muttered quietly, his heart sinking with a heavy weight of guilt. "But we have to do our duty. Let's go."

The fog in the Blackwood Forest was thick and suffocating, wrapping around the trees like damp wool.

"I can't see a damn thing, Leon," Thomas whispered, his boots sinking deep into the wet mud. "Why is it so cold? It feels like the air itself is trying to choke us."

"It's the miasma," Leon replied, keeping his standard iron spear low and his eyes alert. "Without the stone's light, the forest belongs to the dark now."

"This is all because of whoever stole that stone," Thomas muttered, shivering and clutching his hilt. "If I ever find out who did it, I'll kill them myself. They've doomed us all."

Leon felt a sharp pang of guilt in his chest, but he forced his voice to remain flat. "Save your energy, Thomas. We need to stay focused."

"I can't focus!" Thomas hissed, looking around wildly. "Every shadow looks like a monster. Did you hear that rustling just now?"

"System, scan the perimeter," Leon commanded silently.

"Scanning," the system responded instantly. "Warning. High-speed entities detected. Multiple targets approaching in a flanking formation."

"What are they, System?" Leon asked internally.

"Target: Shadow Wolves. Tier 2 magical beasts. Total count: Sixteen. They are preparing a coordinated ambush."

"Thomas, get ready!" Leon shouted, his voice cutting through the damp silence. "Draw your blade!"

"What? Why? What do you see?" Thomas panicked, his sword rattling against his metal guard as he frantically pulled it free.

"Shadow Wolves," Leon said, stepping backward until his shoulder hit Thomas's. "They're circling us. Don't let them split us up."

"Shadow Wolves?! Those things are lightning-fast!" Thomas cried out, his eyes darting through the gray mist. "Oh god, look! There's one! In the fog!"

Two glowing red eyes appeared through the gray mist, followed by another pair, and another, until they were completely surrounded.

"Stay calm, Thomas. Keep your guard high," Leon instructed, his body tensing as the power of the shadow beast surged in his muscles.

"How can you be so calm?!" Thomas screamed. "They're going to eat us alive!"

"They won't," Leon said, a cold, confident smirk forming on his face. "System, activate Shadow-Step."

"Shadow-Step active," the system chimed. "Agility parameters maximized. Engaging tactical display."

The world around Leon slowed to a crawl. He could see the individual droplets of moisture hanging in the air.

"They're lunging!" Leon yelled.

A black wolf burst from the fog, its jaws snapping inches from Thomas's shoulder.

"Duck, Thomas!" Leon roared.

Thomas threw himself to the ground. Leon spun, his spear moving like a flash of silver light. He thrust the weapon forward, the iron tip piercing the wolf's throat with a wet squelch.

"Got one!" Leon shouted, pulling the spear back as the beast dissolved into black smoke.

"How did you do that?!" Thomas gasped from the muddy ground. "It was like a blur!"

"Get up!" Leon yelled, pulling Thomas to his feet. "More are coming!"

Two more wolves lunged from the shadows simultaneously, their claws extended.

"Right side, Thomas! Block!" Leon commanded, thrusting his spear to the left to impale another beast.

"I'm trying!" Thomas screamed, clashing his sword against a wolf's heavy claws. "Agh! It's too strong!"

"No, it's not! Use its momentum against it!" Leon shouted, stepping into a shadow and instantly appearing behind Thomas's attacker. With a swift, powerful slash, he cut the beast's hamstrings.

"Did you... did you just teleport?" Thomas stuttered, his eyes wide with disbelief.

"No time to explain! Watch your flank!" Leon yelled, parrying a snap from another wolf.

Suddenly, the remaining wolves halted their attack, slowly retreating back into the gray fog.

"Wait... they're backing off?" Thomas panted, wiping sweat and mud from his face. "Did we beat them?"

"No," Leon said, his eyes scanning the shaking tree canopy above. "They're clearing out for something bigger."

"Warning: Extreme threat descending from above!" the system's mechanical voice blared.

"Leon! Above you! Look out!" Thomas shrieked, pointing upward.

A massive silhouette, three times the size of the others, burst through the dense branches, its giant jaws wide open and dripping with black saliva, aiming straight for Leon's throat as the fog thickened to a suffocating blackness.
