Everything was painted the same shade of red. And that wasn't a mere view from the eye. It was deep and heavy, as if a storm waited for millennia to return, sad and angry and pained, almost like a storm in the sky.

Oliver was frozen. Blank and stoned by the light, which wasn't warm but cold and sharp. Not fire; living. It wanted to eat everything, thoughts, and memories too. More than light, it was that feeling wrapping around his bones and pulling into the pieces in him.

His body started to tr

The giant blue eye blinked. The black water spun into a massive, violent whirlpool."Hold on!" Sergeant Miller screamed. The boats did not fall into the giant mouth. The rushing water pulled them sideways. A massive wave picked up the heavy metal skiffs and threw them hard into the dark rock wall. But it was not a solid wall. It was a crack in the stone. The boats crashed into a tight, jagged tunnel. The water rushed through the narrow gap like a wild, angry river. The thick metal sides of the boats scraped against the sharp black rocks. SCREEECH! Bright orange sparks flew into the dark air."We are in The Narrows!" Billy cried. He grabbed the metal railing so he would not fall out. "The water is moving too fast! I cannot steer!"Commander Oliver stood at the front of the shaking boat. He did not fall. His heavy boots locked onto the metal floor. The dark magic in his black metal arm kept him perfectly balanced. He looked at the tight, rocky tunnel. The ceiling was only ten feet ab

  • Chapter 728

The heavy metal boats drifted on the pitch-black water. There was no light. There was no sound. The deep, flooded cavern was completely dead. Commander Oliver stood at the very front of the lead boat. His body was awake. The dark magic had rebooted his heart. The black alien metal now covered almost his entire face. Only his human gray eye remained. His other eye burned with a bright, evil red fire. He held the alien black coin in his metal hand. Billy had given it back to him. Only Oliver was strong enough to hold it. "The water is too deep," Billy whispered from the second boat. His hands shook as he held his cracked computer tablet. "My radar is blind. The magic in the water is blocking all our cameras.""Keep your guns raised," Oliver commanded softly. His voice was a cold, robotic hum in the dark. "I will be your eyes."Oliver closed his human eye. He turned on the sonar inside his helmet. A thin wave of green digital light swept across his dark visor. It bounced off the cave

Behind Oliver, Billy wiped sweat from his face. He tapped his cracked tablet. "Yes, boss. The mathematical paradox loop. It is ready. But I need a hardwired connection to upload it. I need to plug it directly into the Overlord’s nervous system.""I am the connection," Oliver said cleanly. Oliver turned his burning red Wraithborn eye toward the clone. "You think you control the board because you control the bomb," Oliver told the clone. "But you forgot that I am already part of your system."Oliver stepped forward. He did not run. He walked slowly toward the platform. The clone frowned. "Stop walking, Oliver. If you touch this platform, I will crush your soldiers.""You will not crush them," Oliver said. "Because you are going to be too busy doing math."Oliver reached the edge of the fleshy platform. He raised his black metal right hand. The glowing purple veins in his arm pulsed brightly. He slammed his dark metal hand directly into the thick, glowing purple cable that connected

  • Chapter 726

The massive green lines on Oliver’s sonar visor pulsed brightly. The walls around them were breathing. The floor beneath the thick purple ice was breathing. They were standing inside the throat of the Overlord. Sergeant Miller stepped forward on the ice. He looked around in the pitch blackness. "Commander. What do you see? Why did we stop?""Do not speak loudly," Oliver commanded. His metallic voice was a tiny, cold whisper. "The cavern walls are biological. We are inside the enemy."The human soldiers froze. Private Davis dropped his rifle slightly. His hands shook. "Inside him? We walked into his mouth? Boss, we have to go back!""We cannot go back," Oliver stated flatly. "The entrance is miles behind us. The ice will not hold forever. We must go forward.""Forward into its stomach?!" General Vega hissed. "The Overlord’s core intelligence must be housed centrally," Oliver explained cleanly. "If we are inside his physical form, we have a direct path to his brain. We will cut it ou

  • Chapter 725

Commander Oliver stood at the very front of the leading metal boat. It was a heavy, armored skiff. The boat drifted slowly across the deep, freezing water. They were entering a place called the Sunken Maw. It was a massive, flooded cave system miles beneath the surface of the planet. The darkness here was absolute. It was so thick it felt like a heavy black blanket wrapped around their heads. "Flashlights are useless," Sergeant Miller whispered. He stood behind Oliver, holding his heavy plasma machine gun tightly. Miller clicked the bright white light on the side of his gun. The beam hit the pitch-black water and simply stopped. The dark magic in the thick fog ate the light immediately. "Turn it off, Sergeant," Oliver commanded. His voice was smooth and perfectly cold. It echoed faintly across the black water. "Light makes us a target. We move in the dark."Miller quickly turned off his flashlight. There were three armored skiffs in the small fleet. They were tied together with t

  • Chapter 724

The perfect clone floated above the broken bone bridge. Red fire poured from its eyes. The Overlord controlled this stolen human face. It raised the black glass spear, ready to strike Commander Oliver. "I will erase you," the clone whispered. The dark voice shook the massive cavern. Oliver did not speak. He did not draw his gun. He did not run complex equations out loud. He simply watched the clone’s shoulders. He looked at the red mist swirling under the clone's boots. The mist was lifting the clone into the air. The mist was the power source. Oliver drew his sharp titanium combat knife. The clone lunged forward. The black glass spear stabbed straight at Oliver's heart. It moved incredibly fast. Oliver did not block the heavy spear. He stepped exactly three inches to the left. The deadly glass weapon passed right by his ear, slicing a tiny cut on his cheek. Oliver did not blink. He stepped smoothly inside the clone's guard, right into the red mist. With his black metal right ha
