Chapter 1: The Phobic Tamer
The acrid tang of decay and ozone was Victor Halim's unwelcome introduction to the world. He blinked, the harsh light searing his eyes, and pushed himself up from what felt like a bed of jagged rocks and pulverised concrete. Every muscle screamed in protest, a chorus of unfamiliar aches resounding through his body. This was not his bedroom. This was not his city.
He coughed, the dust-choked air scratching his throat. Before him lay a panorama of ruin: skeletal buildings clawed at a bruised-plum sky, their windows gaping like vacant eyes. The ground was a mosaic of shattered asphalt and tenacious weeds, whispering tales of a catastrophe he couldn’t comprehend. Dread, cold and sharp, pierced through his disorientation.
"Where… where am I?" Victor’s voice was a ragged whisper, thin and reedy in the overwhelming silence. He swayed, his legs feeling like jelly, as he staggered to his feet. He frantically searched his memory, but there was nothing. Just a void, then this. This desolate, alien landscape. His mind, usually sharp and logical, spun like a broken compass. It felt like a dream, a grotesque nightmare, yet the gritty reality beneath his fingertips, the stench in the air, were undeniable.
A rustle, sharp and sudden, cut through the oppressive quiet. Victor’s head snapped towards the sound, his breath catching in his throat. From behind a crumbling wall, something emerged. It was low to the ground, its body a mottled grey-green carapace that seemed to writhe and shift with an unnatural fluidity. Six spindly, jointed legs clicked against the loose stones as it moved. Two obsidian eyes, like polished beads, gleamed from its angular head, and a single, long mandible twitched, testing the air.
Terror, primal and absolute, seized Victor. His heart hammered against his ribs, a frantic, trapped bird. His lungs constricted, refusing to draw breath. Every instinct screamed at him: monster, danger, run! His knees buckled, threatening to send him crashing back to the ground. This wasn’t a video game; this was horrifyingly, viscerally real.
"Oh god, oh god, no!" he whimpered, a choked gasp escaping his lips. "What is that thing? Get away! Stay away from me!"
The creature paused, its black eyes locking onto Victor. It didn't advance, didn't retreat, simply watched, a silent, predatory assessment. The air thickened, suffocating him. A cold sweat erupted across his skin, and his vision narrowed to a tunnel, the monster filling his sight. He was utterly, helplessly frozen.
Just as the creature took a slow, deliberate step forward, a sudden, crystalline chime rang out within Victor’s skull, sharp enough to cut through his paralyzing fear.
[ SYSTEM ACTIVATION: EXTREME FEAR RESPONSE DETECTED. ]
[ MONSTER TAMING SYSTEM ONLINE. ]
[ EMERGENCY PROTOCOL: INITIAL TAMING SEQUENCE INITIATED. ]
Victor yelped, clutching his head. "What was that? Who's there? Am I going crazy?" he shrieked, his voice raw with panic. The multi-legged creature, startled by his outburst or perhaps the phantom chime, twitched, then scurried away with surprising speed, vanishing into the shadows.
Relief didn’t come. Instead, a new, cold terror gripped him. That thing was real. And this 'System'… it was real too.
[ HOST, MAINTAIN FOCUS. IMMEDIATE THREAT IMMINENT. ]
[ SCANNING ENVIRONMENT FOR WEAKEST, MOST MANAGEABLE MONSTER. ]
[ TARGET ACQUIRED: SLIME. DISTANCE: 12 METERS. ]
[ INITIATING GUIDANCE PROTOCOL. YOUR SURVIVAL DEPENDS ON FOLLOWING ALL INSTRUCTIONS PRECISELY. ]
"System? What are you talking about? I just saw that… bug thing! I'm not taming anything! I don't know how!" Victor protested, his voice escalating into a frantic whine. He tried to back away, but his legs felt like lead weights, refusing to obey. His mind screamed for escape, but his body remained stubbornly rooted.
[ HOST, REFUSAL IS NOT AN OPTION. SLIME APPROACHING. PREPARE FOR TAMING SEQUENCE. ]
A small, gelatinous blob jiggled into view from behind a twisted rebar skeleton. It was roughly the size of a human head, translucent and a pale, almost ethereal blue. Two rudimentary black ovoids, like simple eyes, seemed to observe its surroundings. It moved with a slow, rhythmic pulsation, leaving a faint, shimmering trail on the broken ground.
Victor’s stomach churned violently. It wasn't the grotesque horror of the first monster, but it was still… slimy. Gooey. Repugnant. He had always harbored a deep, visceral aversion to anything squishy, anything invertebrate. This was a direct assault on his sensibilities, a nightmare made manifest.
[ HOST, REMAIN CALM. THIS UNIT IS NON-HOSTILE. ]
[ DIRECTIVE 1: EXTEND YOUR HAND, PALM UP. SLOWLY. ]
"My hand? To that? Are you serious?! No way!" Victor yelled, his heart hammering against his ribs. His hand trembled, clenching into a white-knuckled fist. The slime jiggled closer, its black 'eyes' seemingly fixed on him, an unsettling curiosity emanating from the simple creature.
[ HOST, NON-COMPLIANCE WILL RESULT IN A TERMINAL FAILURE TO ACQUIRE A PRIMARY MONSTER. SURVIVAL RATE: 0.01%. ]
[ FORCING PRIMARY ATTEMPT. ]
Suddenly, an invisible force, cold and unyielding, gripped Victor’s arm. He gasped, struggling violently against the unseen restraint. "Hey! Stop that! I don't want to! Let go of me!" His muscles strained, but the force was absolute. His arm was slowly, inexorably, extended outwards, palm facing upwards, suspended awkwardly in the air.
The slime, as if sensing the involuntary invitation, picked up its pace slightly. It pulsed towards his outstretched palm, its shimmering trail growing more distinct. Victor watched, horrified, a profound sense of violation washing over him. His own body was betraying him.
[ DIRECTIVE 2: ALLOW THE SLIME TO MAKE CONTACT. DO NOT RETRACT. ]
"No! Please, no! Don't let it touch me!" Victor begged, tears pricking at his eyes. He squeezed them shut, bracing for the inevitable. He felt the slight vibration of its approach, then a cold, wet sensation against his skin. He gasped, his entire body stiffening, revulsion overriding all other senses. It felt exactly as terrible as he’d imagined: cold, jelly-like, and squishing against his palm. He wanted to shriek, to violently shake it off, but the invisible force held his arm steady, an immovable anchor.
[ CONTACT ESTABLISHED. ]
[ DIRECTIVE 3: FOCUS YOUR INTENT. VISUALIZE A CONNECTION. ]
"Intent? A connection? I just want it gone! Get it off me!" Victor whimpered, his voice muffled by his clenched teeth. He could feel the slime pulsating softly on his palm, an alien, rhythmic beat against his skin. It wasn't doing anything harmful, but the sheer disgust was overwhelming. He could almost feel its specific texture, the faint stickiness, the damp, squishy chill.
[ HOST, NON-COMPLIANCE WILL RESULT IN FAILED TAMING AND SEVERE REPERCUSSIONS. ]
[ AUTOMATIC INTENT VISUALIZATION INITIATED DUE TO HOST FEAR RESPONSE. ]
A strange warmth, not unpleasant but deeply unsettling, began to spread from his palm, radiating up his arm. He felt a gentle tug, a faint, ethereal mental thread reaching out from him towards the slime. It was a bizarre, almost spiritual sensation, connecting him to the repugnant blob. He forced his eyes open, staring at the slime, now a slightly deeper shade of blue, quivering gently on his hand.
[ TAMING PROGRESS: 20%... 50%... 80%... ]
"What's happening?" Victor whispered, mesmerized despite himself, a new flavor of terror mixed with utter bewilderment swirling within him. He watched, utterly powerless, as the numbers relentlessly climbed.
[ TAMING COMPLETE! ]
[ MONSTER REGISTERED: SLIME (WEAK). ]
[ CONGRATULATIONS, HOST! YOU HAVE TAMED YOUR FIRST MONSTER! ]
The system’s voice chimed with an almost cheerful, infuriating finality. The invisible force abruptly released his arm, and Victor stumbled backward, snatching his hand away from the slime as if burned. He tripped over a loose stone and collapsed onto the ground with a jarring thud. His body trembled uncontrollably, his breath coming in ragged, shallow gasps.
The slime, no longer on his hand, simply jiggled in the spot where he’d dropped it, then slowly, tentatively, began to move towards him again. It stopped a foot away, quivering, its small black eyes seeming to look up at him with a placid, harmless gaze.
Victor stared at it, his chest heaving. It was small. Benign, probably. But it was his. Bound to him. He could still feel that faint, unsettling connection, like a phantom limb, a cold and damp tether. The slime was real. The System was real. The monsters were real. He was in a different world, a terrifying, monster-infested world, and he, Victor Halim—a man who couldn’t even stand the sight of a housefly—was now a monster tamer.
"No," he whispered, a single tear tracing a path through the dust on his cheek. "No, this isn't happening. This can't be real."
He lay there, utterly spent, his heart pounding a frantic rhythm against the hard ground, staring at the slimy, harmless creature that was now 'his'. Disgust warred with a profound sense of terror and helplessness. His new reality had just landed with the cold, wet squish of a slime on his hand, and it was utterly, horrifyingly disgusting. And he had no idea what to do next.

The Monster Tamer Who Hates Monsters Chapter 10: Expanding the Roster
Victor lay panting on the ground, his gaze fixed on the obsidian-blue slime near his feet. The weight of the new survivors' wary eyes still pressed on him, even as their exhaustion began to claim them. Aris and his group, after their initial outburst, had settled into the temporary fort, their desperate need for safety overriding their primal fear of Victor's 'pet'. Lia, their injured medic, was already being attended to by Rina, the Bloodroot and Nightshade Lily making a visible difference in her pallor. Jaya, having found a relatively clear corner, was slumped against a reinforced wall, already half-asleep. Daniela, ever vigilant, stood near the main entrance, her crossbow at the ready, watching the pre-dawn gloom beyond the fortifications."Alright, everyone get some rest," Daniela murmured, her voice low. "Victor, you too. Your blob’s done enough for tonight."Victor nodded, too exhausted to argue. He didn’t try to sleep, though. His body ached, and his

The Monster Tamer Who Hates Monsters Chapter 9: The Community Gathers
Victor slumped against the newly sturdy wall, the rough texture of the slime-reinforced concrete a stark contrast to the shifting rubble he’d known hours before. He closed his eyes, a profound sense of exhaustion washing over him. The obsidian-blue slime, now almost black with fatigue, rested near his feet, occasionally sending out faint, almost imperceptible ripples, like a silent guardian. He felt the subtle thrum of their connection, the constant, low-level alert from the slime, extending his awareness into the hostile world outside their new walls. He still hated the slime, still recoiled at the thought of its touch, but it was undeniable: this creature, his deepest fear made manifest, was now their most vital asset. He wondered how long he could maintain this facade of grudging acceptance, how long before the revulsion consumed him, or before the terrifying implications of Daniela's words about 'more monsters' became his next, inescapable reality.Kian’s soft

The Monster Tamer Who Hates Monsters Chapter 8: The First Shelter
Victor felt a cold dread creep up his spine. "We need more of them, Victor. More monsters." Daniela’s words, sharp and direct, resonated in the quiet, newly fortified room, making the air crackle with a horrifying implication. He looked at the obsidian-blue slime, still exhausted and quiescent at his feet, then back at Daniela, his heart thumping a frantic rhythm against his ribs."More… monsters?" Victor whispered, his voice catching in his throat. "You mean… you want me to tame more of these things? Like that multi-legged bug from before? Or… or the aggressive monster?" His stomach churned just thinking about it, a profound revulsion battling with the chilling logic of her argument. The terror of his first encounter was still a raw wound.Daniela scoffed, though her gaze remained intense, unwavering. "Don't be an idiot, Victor. Not that bug thing. And certainly not that brute of a monster. Those are combat-oriented. And you? You'd

The Monster Tamer Who Hates Monsters Chapter 7: Growing Pains
Victor felt the weight of their gazes, the unspoken questions in their eyes. He looked at his slime, then back at the new survivors, their faces a mixture of fear and gratitude. He was still the reluctant tamer, still the scared civilian, but the monster he controlled had just proven its worth. And in this desolate world, that worth might just be the difference between life and death – not just for him, but for others too. He had no idea what to do with this new reality, or what it truly meant for his place among them. The blue slime by Victor’s foot continued to quiver faintly, its dark hue slowly lightening as the immediate crisis passed. Kian’s breathing was steadier now, the bleeding from his leg wound visibly stemmed by the Bloodroot paste Daniela had applied. Rina sat beside him, gently stroking his forehead, relief warring with exhaustion on her face. Jaya, still clutching his crude metal pipe, stood a few feet away, his eyes moving between Victor and
