Ryan stared at the nurse like she had just told him the walls were made of sugar. "From this room," he said. "I wasn't in this room. I was in an alley."

"I just relay what dispatch tells me," she said, already halfway out the door, the kind of tired that came from a twelve hour shift and zero patience left for mysteries. "Get some rest. Doctor will be in to check on you in an hour."

The door clicked shut, and the quiet that followed felt heavier than it should have.

Ryan lay there a long moment, running the timeline again in his head, the footsteps, the triangle of men, the alley, the dark, none of it added up to a call placed from a hospital room he hadn't been in yet. Unless something had placed it. Unless something had known where he would end up before he did.

He shut his eyes, half expecting nothing, and there it was, the faint blue shimmer at the edge of his vision sharpening the instant he focused on it, lines of text unfolding in the air like they had been waiting patiently for him to stop being distracted by nurses and start paying attention.

‘Liquidation system! Analyzing! Complete!’

"Okay," Ryan said out loud, to the empty room, because talking to thin air felt marginally less insane than thinking it silently. "So I'm either dying, dreaming, or losing it completely. Which one is this."

“None of the above”

"That's not actually an answer." Ryan Said.

“The call was made for you, consider it a welcome gift,” it said.

"A welcome gift," Ryan said. "From who."

“From me,” it replied.

Ryan let out a short laugh that turned into a wince when it pulled at his ribs. "Great. I'm being stalked by an app."

“I am not an app.”

"You sound a little defensive for something that isn't an app."

“I said I am a liquidation system and I have been bonded to you. I do not take offense, I simply correct inaccuracies.”

"Bonded to me," Ryan said slowly. "Like a parasite."

“Like an investment,” it said.

That word landed strange, deliberate, like it had been chosen specifically to get his attention. Ryan pushed himself up against the pillows, ignoring the protest from every bruised muscle in his body, suddenly more alert than he had been since waking up.

"Explain," Ryan said. "Plainly. No riddles."

“The liquidation system converts the losses of those who harm you into gain for you. When someone who has wronged you suffers a loss, money, status, power, reputation, a portion of that loss is converted and transferred to you.”

Ryan sat with that for a second. "So if Tyler loses money because of something I do."

“Correct, the more he loses, the more you gain.”

"And if I just hit him." Ryan said.

“Hitting him accomplished nothing for you, phys6injury is not loss in the way I measure it, you would merely be tired and arrested.”

"So revenge has to be smart."

“Yes, revenge has to be effective, smart. It is simply a requirement of effectiveness.”

Ryan almost smiled at that, the closest thing to relief he'd felt in longer than he wanted to admit. A system that punished stupidity instead of rewarding rage, that was new. That was something he could actually work with.

"Fine," Ryan said. "Let's say I believe you. Why me. Why now. I've had plenty of people screw me over before tonight."

“That is not a question I am authorized to answer yet.” it replied.

"Convenient."

“Necessary. Some answers are earned, not given.”

"You're a real charmer for a piece of software." Ryan said, doubting everything it said.

“I am not a software” it said protesting.

"Could've fooled me."

The system didn't respond right away, and for a second Ryan wondered if he'd actually managed to annoy it, which felt like an oddly satisfying thing to accomplish on the worst night of his life. Then new text bloomed in front of him, slower this time, almost deliberate.

“A notification has been generated.”

Ryan straightened. "What kind of notification?"

“Tyler Briggs has just lost a client contract worth four hundred thousand dollars”

Ryan's heart kicked up a notch. "I didn't do anything. I'm in a hospital bed."

“The loss was not caused by you . It was caused by its own negligence, discovered today by the client in question. However, because he wronged you tonight, and because this loss occurred between the qualification window, a portion was transferred to you regardless of your involvement.”

"So I get rewarded even when I'm not the one who screws him over."

“Correct, though your own action will not accelerate the price considerably.”

Ryan felt something shift inside his chest, not pain this time, something sharper and stranger, a kind of pulling sensation just beneath his ribs, like a held breath finally letting go. The hospital room blurred at the edges for half a second, and when his vision cleared, new text sat waiting, stark and simple.

“Reflect Tier 1 Unlocked.”

Ryan flexed his hand experimentally, and even through the haze of painkillers and bruised knuckles, something felt different, sharper, like the static between his thoughts and his body had cleared out a notch.

"That's it," Ryan said quietly. "That's actually it. This is real."

“This is real and Tyler Briggs is only the beginning.”

Ryan almost asked what that meant, almost asked who else the system already had its eye on, when the door to his room swung open hard enough to bang against the wall, and a man in a security uniform he did not recognize stepped inside, eyes scanning the room with the particular intensity of someone checking whether a target was still breathing.

"Mr. Ryan Cole," the man said, professional, wrong in a way Ryan couldn't immediately name. "I need you to come with me.”

Ryan called Danny back before the thought had fully finished forming, because three hours was not a lot of runway and Carter's people were not the kind of people who left a conversation neutral, they came in with a specific version of events already prepared and they were very good at making that version feel like the one that had always made the most sense.Danny picked up on the first ring this time, which meant he had been sitting with the earlier call rather than moving on from it, and that was either a good sign or a sign that Ryan had already made him nervous enough to stay close to his phone."That was fast," Danny said."Something came up," Ryan said. "Something you need to know before someone else gets to you first, and I need you to hear it from me because the version you are about to hear from them is going to be designed to make you put the phone down and walk away."There was a silence on Danny's end that felt careful rather than alarmed, the silence of a man who had spen

Ryan set the notebook down and picked up his phone, and scrolled to Danny's number, which was still in his contacts from the Lin Group years, and sat with his thumb over the call button for a brief moment.Starting the company felt different from the earlier moves against Tyler. Those had been reactive, a man defending himself by attacking sideways and in a way was something else. This was choosing, deliberately and with full awareness of what it cost, to become something that could be seen, something with a name and an address and a purpose that extended beyond survival into actual ambition. He thought about what the system had said in the hospital, that first real conversation when Ryan had still been half convinced he was dreaming the whole thing. With a deliberate movement, he pressed call.Danny picked up on the third ring, his voice came the same as Ryan remembered it , the voice of a man who had stopped being surprised by most things a long time ago."Danny Reeves," he said

Vince Carter knew it was him. That changed things, not catastrophically, but it changed the geometry of everything he had been building. A ghost that gets identified is no longer a ghost. It is just a person standing in the open, and the open was not where Ryan wanted to be, not at this stage, not with forty three dollars in his bank account and an eviction notice with twelve days left on it.He went upstairs, sat on the floor of his apartment because the chair was the only furniture left and he had been using it as a desk, and opened the notebook to a clean page."Talk me through it," Ryan said. "Carter knows it was me. What does he actually have?""Suspicion, not proof," the system said. "The Whitlow tip was clean. The Pete conversation left no trail. What Carter has is pattern recognition, someone dismantled Tyler's contracts in a specific order using methods that suggest insider knowledge of the security industry. That narrows the field considerably, but it does not give him a n

Vanessa blinked, clearly having prepared herself for something louder. "That's all you're going to say?""What would you like me to say," Ryan said."I don't know," she said, and for a moment she actually looked like herself, the version of her he had known before everything, uncertain and a little undone by her own choices. "Something real, maybe.""Something real," Ryan said. He thought about it for a moment, genuinely, standing on the corner of Marsh and Eleventh with the cold working its way through his jacket and his knee starting its usual late afternoon complaints. "Alright. Something real is that I spent a long time thinking the worst part of this year was losing the job. Standing here right now I think I had the order wrong."Vanessa said nothing. Her jaw moved slightly like she was searching for a response and coming up empty."Take care of yourself," Ryan said, and walked past her.He made it half a block before the system spoke."That was not nothing," the system said."Di

Ryan sat with Vince Carter's name for a long time after the system said it, turning it over the way a stone is turned knowing it has something unpleasant underneath.Vince Carter was not a name most people in the city would recognize. That was the whole point of him. He operated in the space between legitimate business and the kind of work that never made it into meeting minutes or annual reports, a fixer before fixing had a clean name, the sort of man companies called when they needed something handled without a paper trail leading back to the boardroom.Ryan had crossed paths with him twice during his Lin Group years, both times briefly, and times in rooms where Vince was present but never central, always slightly to the side of the main conversation, watching rather than participating, the way a man watches when he is already three moves ahead of everyone else in the building. He had thought nothing of it at the time. He thought plenty of it now."How long has Carter been connecte

“The three remaining contracts Tyler still held were not equal, and Ryan knew from nine years in the industry that you never hit all your targets at once unless you wanted to look like the aggressor. You picked the weakest point, applied the right pressure, and let the structure collapse from the inside out.”He spread the notebook open on the floor in front of him, cross legged, coffee going cold beside him because he kept forgetting to drink it, and wrote out what he knew about each contract from memory.“Hartwell Plaza, a mixed use commercial building downtown, standard perimeter security, Tyler had inherited the contract from a firm that folded, meaning the relationship was transactional rather than loyal. Beacon Medical Supplies, a mid sized pharmaceutical distributor with a loading dock problem Tyler had apparently never properly solved.
