Chapter 1
Ryan Cole heard the footsteps behind him before he saw anything, soft and deliberate on wet pavement, and his body went tense a full second before his mind caught up and told him why.He had taken this alley behind his apartment a hundred times without thinking twice about it. Tonight, three men peeled out of the shadow near the dumpster and spread into a loose triangle around him, the kind of formation that meant they had done this before and knew exactly how much space a person needed to feel trapped."Ryan Cole," the biggest one said, a slab of muscle with a buzz cut and knuckles that had clearly met a few faces before his. He said it warm, almost friendly, the way men say things right before they stop pretending to be friendly."Do I know you?" Ryan asked, though he already had a decent guess."Tyler sends his regards," the big one said. There it was. Ryan felt something cold settle in his chest, more like the quiet certainty of a man watching a bill finally come due."Tell Tyle
Chapter 2
The light came back slow, gray and watery, and for a second Ryan thought he was still in the alley. Then he realized he wasn't lying on concrete anymore. He was lying on something soft, a couch maybe, in a room that smelled like cologne instead of garbage, and the voice talking near him wasn't laughing the way the men in the alley had laughed."Mr. Lin, please, stay back from the windows until we clear the perimeter."That voice belonged to him. Younger him. A version of Ryan that still had two working knees and a job that meant something. He understood, somewhere underneath the confusion, that this wasn't real, not exactly:?, not the way the alley had been real. This was a memory, or something close enough to one that it didn't matter, pulling him backward through time like a hand dragging him by the collar.Three years ago. The day everything started.Marcus Lin had been twenty four then, soft around the edges in the way that money made a person soft, more interested in his phone th
Chapter 3
Ryan stared at the nurse like she had just told him the walls were made of sugar. "From this room," he said. "I wasn't in this room. I was in an alley.""I just relay what dispatch tells me," she said, already halfway out the door, the kind of tired that came from a twelve hour shift and zero patience left for mysteries. "Get some rest. Doctor will be in to check on you in an hour."The door clicked shut, and the quiet that followed felt heavier than it should have.Ryan lay there a long moment, running the timeline again in his head, the footsteps, the triangle of men, the alley, the dark, none of it added up to a call placed from a hospital room he hadn't been in yet. Unless something had placed it. Unless something had known where he would end up before he did.He shut his eyes, half expecting nothing, and there it was, the faint blue shimmer at the edge of his vision sharpening the instant he focused on it, lines of text unfolding in the air like they had been waiting patiently fo
Chapter 4
The man standing in the doorway didn't look like hospital security. Hospital security wore soft polos and apologetic expressions. This man wore a stiff black jacket with no hospital logo anywhere on it, and his eyes moved across the room like he was cataloguing exits, not checking on a patient."Mr. Cole," he said again. "I need you to come with me."“This is not hospital staff,” the system said quietly in his head, like it found the whole situation mildly interesting rather than alarming. “Heart rate elevated. Recommend caution.”"Funny," Ryan said out loud, easing himself upright despite every nerve in his body voting against it. "Didn't realize hospitals hired their security from wherever you're from."The man's jaw tightened. "I'm not asking twice.""You haven't actually asked once," Ryan said. "You've just said the same sentence at me. Try a question this time."Something flickered behind the man's eyes, irritation maybe, or recalculation, like he hadn't expected a half dead pa
Chapter 5
Ryan spent the first morning after his discharge sitting on the floor of his half-empty apartment, with his back against the wall, and his laptop balanced on his knees, and forty three dollars in his bank account staring back at him from the screen like a personal insult. The eviction notice gave him three weeks. Three weeks to find money he didn't have, in a city that had already decided he wasn't worth employing, and with a reputation that Tyler Briggs had spent six months carefully dismantling before Ryan even knew the demolition had started."Okay," Ryan said to the system and the general unfairness of everything. "Let's talk about strategy."“I was wondering when you would get around to that,” the system said. “You have been staring at your bank balance for eleven minutes.”"I was processing," Ryan said.“You were catastrophizing,” the system said. “There is a difference.”"Fine," Ryan said. "What do I actually have right now."“You have Reflex Tier 1, which is modest but real.
Chapter 6
“The three remaining contracts Tyler still held were not equal, and Ryan knew from nine years in the industry that you never hit all your targets at once unless you wanted to look like the aggressor. You picked the weakest point, applied the right pressure, and let the structure collapse from the inside out.”He spread the notebook open on the floor in front of him, cross legged, coffee going cold beside him because he kept forgetting to drink it, and wrote out what he knew about each contract from memory.“Hartwell Plaza, a mixed use commercial building downtown, standard perimeter security, Tyler had inherited the contract from a firm that folded, meaning the relationship was transactional rather than loyal. Beacon Medical Supplies, a mid sized pharmaceutical distributor with a loading dock problem Tyler had apparently never properly solved. And Creston Private Members Club, old money, reputation conscious, the kind of client that cared deeply about discretion and cared very little
Chapter 7
Ryan sat with Vince Carter's name for a long time after the system said it, turning it over the way a stone is turned knowing it has something unpleasant underneath.Vince Carter was not a name most people in the city would recognize. That was the whole point of him. He operated in the space between legitimate business and the kind of work that never made it into meeting minutes or annual reports, a fixer before fixing had a clean name, the sort of man companies called when they needed something handled without a paper trail leading back to the boardroom.Ryan had crossed paths with him twice during his Lin Group years, both times briefly, and times in rooms where Vince was present but never central, always slightly to the side of the main conversation, watching rather than participating, the way a man watches when he is already three moves ahead of everyone else in the building. He had thought nothing of it at the time. He thought plenty of it now."How long has Carter been connecte
Chapter 8
Vanessa blinked, clearly having prepared herself for something louder. "That's all you're going to say?""What would you like me to say," Ryan said."I don't know," she said, and for a moment she actually looked like herself, the version of her he had known before everything, uncertain and a little undone by her own choices. "Something real, maybe.""Something real," Ryan said. He thought about it for a moment, genuinely, standing on the corner of Marsh and Eleventh with the cold working its way through his jacket and his knee starting its usual late afternoon complaints. "Alright. Something real is that I spent a long time thinking the worst part of this year was losing the job. Standing here right now I think I had the order wrong."Vanessa said nothing. Her jaw moved slightly like she was searching for a response and coming up empty."Take care of yourself," Ryan said, and walked past her.He made it half a block before the system spoke."That was not nothing," the system said."Di
Chapter 9
Vince Carter knew it was him. That changed things, not catastrophically, but it changed the geometry of everything he had been building. A ghost that gets identified is no longer a ghost. It is just a person standing in the open, and the open was not where Ryan wanted to be, not at this stage, not with forty three dollars in his bank account and an eviction notice with twelve days left on it.He went upstairs, sat on the floor of his apartment because the chair was the only furniture left and he had been using it as a desk, and opened the notebook to a clean page."Talk me through it," Ryan said. "Carter knows it was me. What does he actually have?""Suspicion, not proof," the system said. "The Whitlow tip was clean. The Pete conversation left no trail. What Carter has is pattern recognition, someone dismantled Tyler's contracts in a specific order using methods that suggest insider knowledge of the security industry. That narrows the field considerably, but it does not give him a n
Chapter 10
Ryan set the notebook down and picked up his phone, and scrolled to Danny's number, which was still in his contacts from the Lin Group years, and sat with his thumb over the call button for a brief moment.Starting the company felt different from the earlier moves against Tyler. Those had been reactive, a man defending himself by attacking sideways and in a way was something else. This was choosing, deliberately and with full awareness of what it cost, to become something that could be seen, something with a name and an address and a purpose that extended beyond survival into actual ambition. He thought about what the system had said in the hospital, that first real conversation when Ryan had still been half convinced he was dreaming the whole thing. With a deliberate movement, he pressed call.Danny picked up on the third ring, his voice came the same as Ryan remembered it , the voice of a man who had stopped being surprised by most things a long time ago."Danny Reeves," he said
