The deafening roar of the collapsing temple was completely cut off. The terrible sound of grinding stone and falling rock vanished. The vault was perfectly insulated. It was built to withstand the end of the world.

The forty refugees lay on the smooth, polished black glass floor. They gasped for air. They were covered in thick gray dust and dirt. They looked around in absolute awe.

The room was colossal. It was pitch black near the high ceiling, but the center of the

The walls of the canyon were incredibly high. They went straight up into the pitch-black darkness. But the walls were not made of normal stone. They were made of massive, petrified black roots and giant, jagged white bones. It looked like they were walking through the ribcage of a dead, colossal snake mixed with a dead, ancient forest. The black roots twisted and turned in crazy directions. The sharp white bones stuck out of the ground like giant teeth. The floor of the canyon was very uneven. It was covered in sharp rocks, deep holes, and pools of dark, stagnant water. The air smelled like old dust and dry decay. It was perfectly, terrifyingly silent."Where are we?" Kael asked. He gripped his broken metal pipe tightly. He did not like the look of this place. It felt wrong. It felt evil."We are off the main path," Frank said. He looked at his glowing blue minimap in the corner of his vision. "The acid fl

The glowing blue wireframe map in Frank Williams’s vision showed the horrifying truth. Deep beneath the boiling, glowing surface of the golden sea, massive, serpentine shadows were twisting and gliding. They were Leviathans. They were ancient, colossal monsters the size of mountains, swimming silently in the toxic stomach acid of the Root. Frank stood on the dark stone shore. He leaned heavily on his crude wooden crutch. His human right hand trembled as he pointed out at the water. On the surface of the golden ocean, the forty refugees of Lyrendale were sitting tightly packed together on the ugly, hastily built raft of lashed bones. Elara was standing at the edge, holding her hand out to help Frank aboard. "Frank?" Elara called out. "What do you see?"Frank dropped his trembling hand. He looked at the flimsy raft. He saw the torn blue banners and the petrified vines holding the giant bones together. He saw how the white bones shifted and groaned with every small wave of the boiling

The roaring sound was completely deafening. It sounded like a massive, angry ocean crashing through the dark stone tunnel. But it was not water. It was a giant, boiling tidal wave of thick green acid, melted gold, and dark red raw meat. The Root had collapsed the Stomach cavern. The entire ceiling had fallen, pushing millions of tons of deadly liquid straight into the final hallway. Frank Williams stood in the dark. He stared at the glowing blue minimap in the corner of his vision. The bright red zone on the map was moving incredibly fast. It was eating up the green path. It was coming right for them. "We cannot outrun it!" Kael shouted. The broad-shouldered man grabbed his broken metal pipe. He looked into the pitch-black darkness of the tunnel. He could smell the sour, burning acid. The hot air pushed against his face. "It is moving too fast!""Frank!" Elara screamed. She pulled her chipped royal steel dagger. "What do we do?"Frank did not panic. His mind was perfectly calm. The

A rush of cold, stale air blew into the pristine vault. Beyond the doors was a dark, square tunnel made of smooth, ancient gray stone. The tunnel was wide enough for a wagon to drive through. It was perfectly straight, sloping gently downward into the pitch-black shadows. "Let's go," Frank said. He stepped over the threshold, walking out of the safe, quiet vault and into the dark tunnel. Elara followed right beside him, holding her chipped dagger. The forty refugees marched closely behind them, their boots echoing loudly against the smooth stone floor. As they walked down the dark tunnel, Frank kept his eyes on the minimap in his vision. The map showed their position as a small, glowing blue dot. The blue dot moved slowly along the bright green path, heading steadily toward the massive vertical tube of the Ascension Shaft. It was peaceful. It was quiet. The tunnel was completely empty. There were no bone-spiders on the ceiling. There were no stone golems waiting in the shadows.

The refugees cheered. It was a weak, tired cheer, but it was real. For the first time in days, they had a concrete, guaranteed escape plan. They did not have to fight their way back up through the monsters. They just had to walk down a short path to an elevator."How far is the shaft from this vault?" Kael asked, looking at the map.Frank looked at the green line."It is close," Frank said. "Very close. If we go through the back doors of this room, we only have to walk through three small tunnels. We can be at the elevator doors in twenty minutes.""Then let us not waste another second," old Silas said, grabbing his walking stick. He looked energized. The promise of seeing the sun again gave the old man new strength."Wait," Elara said softly. She turned to Frank. She looked at his glowing blue Phantom Limb. She looked at his human right arm. She looked at his legs."Frank," Elara whispered, stepping close to him.

The colors were perfect. There was no sickening gold. There was no aggressive red. Everything was a calm, cool, soothing blue."Hello, Frank," Luna’s voice chimed warmly in his mind. "It’s good to be home."Frank could not help it. Despite his torn, bloody clothes, despite the gray dust covering his skin, and despite the fact that the entire underground world was collapsing outside the doors, he grinned. It was a huge, genuine, ear-to-ear grin. For the first time since falling into the dark abyss, Frank wasn’t fighting a war inside his own head. He wasn't wrestling with an alien parasite trying to eat his brain. He wasn't burning his own memories to stay alive. He felt entirely focused. He felt incredibly sharp. He felt absolutely, perfectly protected."It's good to have you back, Luna," Frank whispered out loud.Elara walked over to him. She saw the huge grin on his face.
