With anger flashing across his face, Raymond snapped, “This is nonsense! What kind of nonsense is this? Copied? How? How is that even possible? Forged?”

His voice climbed with every word. “This was my idea mine! I sat down for three straight weeks working on that blueprint. I have everything with me every draft, every detail, every file and now they’re saying it was copied? That it was forged? How is that even possible? What the hell is going on?”

He began pacing the office, one hand gripping his forehead, the other clenched at his side. “This has to be a mistake,” he muttered sharply. “There’s a misunderstanding somewhere, and it needs to be cleared up immediately.”

Immediately the secretary nodded, her expression anxious.

“Yes, sir. It does sound like a mistake, but they… they sounded very serious on the phone. What are we going to do now?” Her voice trembled on the last few words.

Raymond stopped pacing and lifted his head.

“Then I’ll contact a lawyer,” he said decisively. “Or better yet, I’ll go to City Hall myself to clarify everything. I’ll take the blueprints with me. I was among the first ten people who submitted proposals on the City Hall website the first ten. I did this myself, so why should I be afraid of accusations of forgery or copying? That’s not even possible. I’ll go there myself.”

He moved toward the door, but then stopped. His thoughts were jumbled; everything around him seemed to tilt. For a second he stood still, trying to gather his breath, trying to make sense of it.

Then he turned back toward his secretary, his voice lower now, uncertain but edged with defiance. “Wait,” he said slowly. “If they’re saying we forged this and copied it from someone else… who did they say we copied it from? they must have made mention of a name.”

At that moment, when Raymond asked the question, his secretary hesitated. She stood still for a brief second, her fingers tightening around the file in her hands. Then, in a low and careful voice, she said, “City Hall is saying the idea was copied… that it was forged from someone named Simon Brown.”

The name didn’t strike Raymond immediately. Simon Brown. The words echoed in his mind, empty at first. Who is this Simon Brown? he wondered. I don’t even know anyone by that name.

Then everything clicked.

In an instant, memories came rushing in. Simon Brown. He was not a stranger at all. He was someone very close to his wife, Megan. No not just close. Raymond remembered now. They hadn’t simply been friends. They had once been engaged.

Simon Brown had traveled out of the country years ago, and only a month earlier, Raymond had found out that he had returned. That return had been one of the main reasons Megan’s parents had started putting heavy pressure on him again. It was also why Raymond had recently noticed a change in Megan the way her smiles didn’t last, the way she avoided certain conversations, the way she tried too hard to act normal, as if she were desperately covering up everything connected to Simon Brown.

She had tried to make it seem as though there was no tension, no pressure, no pull drawing her back toward Simon Brown. And Raymond, trusting his own determination, hadn’t read too much into it. He believed that if he worked hard, if he succeeded, everything would fall into place.

For over a month, he had pushed himself beyond his limits, spending sleepless nights on this contract, determined to make it work, determined to prove himself.

He had believed that once this deal was secured, he would finally silence everyone who had looked down on him.

And now this was happening.

That was when Raymond’s jaw tightened even more, the muscles locking hard as the truth settled in. His veins stood out, his hands clenched into fists, and his jaw began to tremble. Everything was clear now. This wasn’t a mistake. It was a betrayal and not from just anyone, but from his own wife.

Megan was the one who had stabbed him in the back.

She was the one who had driven a dagger straight into his heart when he never saw it coming. She was the one who had taken his idea and handed it to her ex‑lover. She knew the blueprint she knew how it was structured, every idea he had poured into it, every calculation, every detail. Word for word, line for line, she knew it all.

He had even given it to her to read through, trusting her, wanting her to understand how demanding and tedious a contract like this truly was.

He couldn’t believe Megan would do this to him. Not when he was this close to achieving greatness. Not when he was on the verge of making a name for himself. Not when he was finally becoming the man he had always dreamed of being.

Not when he was so close to proving everyone wrong to a future where no one would mock him again, no one would look down on him, no one would talk to him like he was nothing, like trash. No one would dismiss his ideas or belittle his efforts.

Not when he was so close.

And yet, the one who chose to betray him was his own wife the woman he had fought for, worked for, exhausted himself for, just to give her the best life possible. She didn’t respect his labor or his sacrifice. Instead, she took everything he was about building and gave it to her ex‑lover.

Raymond walked toward his car alone. Each step felt heavier than the last, as though the ground itself were resisting him, trying to pull him back into the wreckage he had just left behind. The noise from the building faded, the voices dissolved, and all that remained was the sound of his own breathing and his thoughts.“I never knew,” he murmured to himself, staring at the cracked pavement beneath his feet. “I really thought starting afresh would be better. I thought relying on my own potential earning everything genuinely would finally set me free.”He let out a slow, bitter laugh.“I thought walking away from the shadows of my past would bring relief. I thought finding true love would be enough. I thought keeping my past separate from my present would be a blessing.”At that moment he stopped beside his car, resting a hand on the door without opening it.“But I was wrong.”His eyes darkened.“The past doesn’t disappear. It waits. And no matter how far you run, it always finds a way

At that moment, something shifted in Megan. For years, she had told herself that everything she did was for Raymond. Every painful decision, every difficult compromise, every sleepless night had been justified in her mind by one belief that she was helping him climb. That she was shaping him into the man he was meant to become. But standing there now, absorbing the weight of his rage, his accusations, his refusal to bend it no longer felt that way.To her, it no longer looked like a man fighting for his dignity, It looked like ingratitude. And that realization cut deeply. She had expected resistance, yes. She had anticipated stubbornness. But she had never expected him to stand in front of her family in front of everyone and look at her as though she were his enemy. As though every sacrifice she had made was something to be ashamed of. As though she had spent years plotting against him rather than fighting for him.She couldn't condone it. She refused to.Her lips trembled. Her eyes f

However Raymond didn't let her finish. “Say no more.”The words came out sharp and final, cutting through everything like a blade through silence. His voice was low, but there was nothing quiet about it. It carried the weight of a man who had just watched the last thing he believed in crumble to dust. He looked at Megan really looked at her as though seeing her clearly for the very first time. “Since you don't see me as a person,” he began, his voice tight with barely contained fury, “since you never believed in what I was capable of, since you never trusted me enough to fight beside me when things got hard—”He stepped back, as though the distance between them was already inevitable. “You want me to hand everything over? To bow my head and surrender what I built with my own hands and give it all to him? You want me to strip myself of every ounce of dignity I have left and crawl into Simon's company like a defeated man?”His jaw tightened. “Never. I will never work for this

Almost immediately, without allowing Megan to say anything Megan’s father stepped in, his voice calm but heavy with authority, as though he were delivering a final judgment. “I honestly don’t understand why you’re making things so difficult for yourself,” he said, shaking his head. “Why you insist on turning your own life into a battlefield like this.” He studied Raymond coldly. “Have you even stopped to think about what you’re walking into? Instead of doing the sensible thing getting down on your knees, just as my wife advised, and begging Simon properly you’re choosing stubbornness. Pride. Trying to prove some point that, frankly, I don’t even understand.” He scoffed. “You think this is strength? This is self‑destruction.” Then his tone shifted, turning sharp. “Or have you forgotten something very important? Something City Hall will not forget.” He took a step forward. “You know very well they’re going to fine you for forgery. You won’t win that case. We submitted the co

Simon didn’t stop there. As if his words alone weren’t cruel enough, he slid his hand around Megan’s shoulder and pulled her a little closer to his side. The gesture was deliberate calculated, intimate, impossible to misunderstand. He made sure Raymond saw it. Every second of it. Then he looked up and smirked. “Tell me, Raymond,” he said, his voice laced with mockery, “if not for love, what would Megan be doing with a poor orphan like you? A man so lost he doesn’t even know his left from his right.” His smile widened. “You should be grateful. In fact, you should be thanking your stars that Megan has already divorced you.” For a moment, Raymond thought he had misheard him. The words rang in his ears, sharp and unreal, yet Simon’s face showed no trace of humor. He wasn’t joking. Not even a little. And that was what made it worse. Raymond stood frozen, staring at them as disbelief settled heavily in his chest. All this time, he had believed Megan loved him. Truly loved

At that moment, Megan’s brother suddenly cleared his throat, the sound sharp and deliberate, cutting through the tension in the room. His expression was hard, his eyes fixed on Raymond with open hostility. “I don’t even understand why everyone here is trying to convince him to accept compensation,” he said angrily. “Why should we compensate Raymond at all? He doesn’t deserve a single cent.” He took a step forward, his voice rising. “What about the three long years he’s wasted in this family? Three years of nothing. Three years where he achieved nothing meaningful for us. Three years of empty promises promises upon promises while this family became a laughingstock because of him.” He scoffed. “Those three years should be the compensation. This contract we’ve secured is us collecting what we’re owed for the time he stole from this family. Raymond deserves nothing. Absolutely nothing.” He gestured toward Simon. “Just listen to what Simon said. He’s already secured the city co
