The conference room on the forty-second floor smelled like old coffee and expensive, fake confidence. Morning light streamed through the floor-to-ceiling glass, but the atmosphere inside felt cold.

Evelyn sat at the head of the mahogany table. Her posture was straight, her hands resting flat against her tablet. She looked every bit the ice-queen CEO the media loved to write about. I knew better, though. I saw the faint tension in her jaw. I noticed the slight tremor in her fingers before she locked them together.

I stood two steps behind her left shoulder, wearing my standard dark suit. To everyone in this room, I was just a low-level guard hired by her grandfather. An extra body in the room. Nobody.

"Let us stop pretending, Evelyn," Director Vance—no relation to my family, fortunately—said, tossing a leather-bound folder onto the table. It slid across the polished wood, stopping inches from her hands. "The Hayes Group already owns thirty percent of our supply chain. If we do not accept Julian's buyout proposal by noon, they will cut our freight lines entirely. Sterling Enterprises will be bankrupt before the end of the quarter."

"Julian's proposal is not a partnership, Vance," Evelyn said, her voice smooth and measured. "It is a hostile takeover disguised as a rescue package. He wants fifty-one percent voting control."

"And what choice do we have?" another board member chimed in.

Vance leaned forward, resting his heavy forearms on the table. He was a bloated man in his late fifties with a thin hairline and an arrogant sneer. "We take the deal, or we all go down with your sinking ship. Frankly, your grandfather is too old to manage this company, and you are too soft. I am calling for an emergency board vote right now to strip your executive veto power."

Evelyn did not flinch, but I felt the shift in her energy. She was backed into a corner. The board members were terrified of Julian Hayes, or worse, bought off by him.

"You do not have the authority to call an emergency vote without forty-eight hours' notice," Evelyn said.

"Try me," Vance snapped, raising his hand to signal the board. "I have six proxy votes right here. I will remove you from this room myself if I have to."

He actually started to stand up, glaring at her like he wanted to physically intimidate her into backing down.

Anyway, I had heard enough.

I took a quiet step forward. My shoes did not make a sound on the carpet. I moved between Evelyn's chair and the table, placing myself directly in Vance's line of sight.

"Sit down, Director," I said softly.

Vance paused, looking at me like I was a stray dog that had wandered into a five-star restaurant. He chuckled, a deep, ugly sound. "What did you say to me, kid? Know your place. You are hired to help. Step back before I have security throw you out of the building."

I did not move. I did not raise my voice either. I simply looked into his eyes and let a tiny sliver of the aura I built in the Black Iron Fortress bleed through my eyes.

The temperature in the immediate space between us seemed to drop ten degrees. Vance's laugh cut short. The color began to drain from his face as he locked eyes with me. He froze mid-stand, his hands hovering over the table.

I leaned down slowly, bringing my mouth close to his ear so only he could hear me.

"If you raise your hand again, Ghost will release the offshore tax files from your Swiss accounts to the federal prosecutor before you reach the lobby," I whispered.

Vance went completely rigid. His eyes widened until the whites showed all around his irises. Sweat broke out instantly along his hairline. He swallowed hard, his throat making a loud, dry click. He knew about those accounts. Nobody was supposed to know about those accounts.

I stepped back, returning to my neutral position behind Evelyn. My expression was completely flat again, like I had just offered the man a cup of water.

Vance slowly sank back into his leather chair. His knees actually hit the underside of the table with a soft thud. He pulled a silk handkerchief from his pocket and wiped his brow, his hands shaking violently.

"Vance?" Evelyn asked, eyeing him with deep suspicion. "You were saying?"

"I... I..." Vance stuttered, unable to look in my direction. He stared at his trembling hands. "I think... Perhaps we should reconsider. We need more time to review the options. The vote can wait."

The rest of the board exchanged confused glances. A second ago, Vance was ready to start a mutiny. Now he looked like he had just seen a ghost. Evelyn glanced over her shoulder at me, her sharp blue eyes narrowing. I kept my face blank, staring straight ahead at the wall.

Before anyone else could speak, the sleek smartphone on the center of the table vibrated. The screen lit up with an unsaved number, but the caller ID crest was unmistakable.

It was the Hayes Group emblem.

Evelyn hesitated for a split second before pressing the speaker button. "Evelyn Sterling."

"Evelyn, my dear," Julian's arrogant voice echoed clearly through the silent conference room. He sounded relaxed, like a man playing chess against a child. "I assume Director Vance has explained the reality of your situation?"

Evelyn glanced at Vance, who was staring at the floor in silence. "We are in the middle of a board meeting, Julian."

"Not anymore," Julian smooth-talked, his tone dropping all pretense of warmth. "Listen to me carefully. I am done playing games with your little family legacy. You have exactly two hours to meet me at the Grand Riverdale Hotel. Sign the transfer papers, or by midnight, every single shipping container carrying Sterling tech across the border will be seized by the regional maritime authorities. You will lose everything."

The room went dead silent.

Julian added one last poison drop. "Oh, and bring your cheap ex-convict bodyguard with you. I want him to watch you sign away your empire."

The call disconnected with a sharp tone. Evelyn sat frozen, the blood draining from her lips as the board members began to panic.

I checked my watch.

Two hours. That was plenty of time for Julian Hayes to realize he was playing a game he had already lost.

The air in the basement garage smelled like burnt diesel and wet concrete. By the way, forty-eight stories above us, Evelyn was still sitting in a tense board meeting. She thought her chief technical strategist was simply taking a late coffee break. He was not taking a coffee break.I stood by the heavy steel exit door, watching Arthur Sterling, the senior executive who had been leaking company secrets for six months. He carried a leather briefcase stuffed with encrypted flash drives containing our newest patent designs. He walked fast. His polished designer shoes squeaked against the epoxy floor."Going somewhere, Vice President Arthur?" I asked.Arthur stopped cold. He turned around, his expensive silk tie slightly crooked. He looked at my cheap security guard jacket with total disdain."What are you doing down here, Vance?" he barked. His voice echoed off the concrete pillars. "Move out of my way. I have an urgent off-site client presentation.""An off-site presentation in the unde

Chaos broke out in the executive suite at eight in the morning.Evelyn slammed her tablet onto the glass desk, her jaw set tight. "The Hayes Group just filed a patent claim in the capital. It matches our new high-density battery design word for word."Her legal team stood in a neat line, heads bowed. Nobody wanted to meet her gaze. Three months of research went down the drain overnight. If Julian Hayes secured that patent, Sterling Enterprises lost its entire edge in the regional market."Who had access to the main schematic files?" Evelyn asked. Her voice carried a sharp edge."Only four senior directors," Vice President Marcus Vance said, stepping forward. He checked his gold watch. "Plus the internal server team. We are running an internal check right now, Miss Sterling. These things take time. It could take days to track the digital footprint."I stood behind Evelyn's leather chair, wearing my usual dark suit. My hands rested behind my back. I kept my expression blank."Days?" Eve

  • Chapter 18 Growing Suspicion

The quiet hum of the executive elevator felt heavy as we descended toward the underground parking garage. Evelyn stood beside me, her arms crossed tight against her chest, her sharp eyes fixed on the reflective steel doors. She had been silent since we left the executive suite. That was never a good sign.Usually, she barked orders or reviewed financial reports on her tablet. Today, she just stared."You handled those men back at the harbor very quickly," she said, breaking the silence without looking at me."They were sloppy," I replied, keeping my voice flat and casual. "Street thugs usually rely on noise rather than actual technique. A little pressure on the right joints goes a long way.""Right. Simple pressure." Her tone dripped with mild sarcasm. "And I suppose the city code inspector's sudden change of heart was just poor stress management on his part?"I offered a small, dismissive shrug. "Some people break under the weight of their own dirty laundry. Anyway, we should get you

  • Chapter 17 Shadow Execution

The subterranean garage beneath Sterling Tower smelled of damp concrete, old motor oil, and impending trouble. Overhead, a broken fluorescent tube flickered with a low buzzing sound, throwing twitchy shadows over rows of parked luxury sedans. It was past ten at night. The corporate offices upstairs were empty, but the underground bay felt far too crowded.Evelyn Sterling walked fast, her designer heels echoing sharp against the polished floor. She kept her leather handbag tucked tight under her arm."We need to move faster, Lucas," she said, her voice tight with stress. "The board meeting ran late, and Julian was far too quiet during the financial report. I do not like it when he stays quiet."I walked two paces behind her, keeping my jacket buttoned and my eyes scanning the dark corners. "I agree with you about the quiet part. By the way, stop right where you are."She froze mid-step, her hand hovering two inches above her car door handle. "What is it?""We have company," I said soft

  • Chapter 16 The Assassination Attempt

Rain pounded the concrete outside, but down in the sub-basement parking garage, the air tasted like stale oil and cold damp dust.I stood beside the rear door of Evelyn’s armored Mercedes sedan, holding it open as she slid onto the leather seat. She dropped her briefcase on the cushion next to her and pinched the bridge of her nose. Her face looked pale under the flickering fluorescent tubes overhead."Long meeting," she murmured, leaning her head back. "Julian's lawyers are getting desperate. They know the debt buyout is coming.""Let them sweat," I said, shutting her door with a solid thud.Anyway, desperate people make sloppy choices. I walked around to the driver's side and got behind the wheel.I put the key into the ignition and cranked engine. The V8 engine hummed softly in the cavernous space. I adjusted my rearview mirror, catching a glimpse of Evelyn closing her eyes. She thought the day's danger was over because the corporate suits had packed up their briefcases and left th

So, the Hundred Million Dollar cash bump in Evelyn's corporate account blew out Julian's forced takeover deal overnight. He didn't take it well.By noon, reports hit my earbud. Julian was pacing his penthouse, smashing glass tumblers against his high-end art collection. He knew someone was running interference. Someone big. Someone pulling global money strings to shield Sterling Enterprises.Naturally, his arrogant brain never pointed the finger at the guy wearing a thirty-dollar dark tie standing behind Evelyn's desk."He's panicking," Ghost whispered over the comms. I heard the soft click of his keyboard as he tracked the digital fallout. "The Hayes Group board is threatening to pull his chairman seat if he can't secure Evelyn's patents by Friday. He thinks an international hedge fund is backing her.""Let him guess," I replied quietly.I adjusted my cuff links while standing near the window of Evelyn's executive office. Down on the coastal streets, River City moved like a well-oile
