Chapter 6 — The Woman Behind the Mystery

Ethan drove back to the city with one thought running through his mind.

Evelyn Cross knows about the system.

That was impossible.

At least, it should have been.

The system had appeared only after the accident. Nobody had been there when it activated.

Nobody except...

Ethan suddenly remembered the black car.

The person watching him after the accident.

His hands tightened around the steering wheel.

Could Evelyn Cross have arranged the accident?

His phone suddenly vibrated.

[Danger Alert.]

[Host is being monitored.]

Ethan looked at the rearview mirror.

A black sedan was following him.

The same model as the car he had seen the night before.

“Of course.”

He didn't panic.

Instead, he took an unexpected turn.

The sedan followed.

Ethan turned again.

Still following.

He smiled.

“So they really are interested in me.”

The system appeared.

[Suggested action: Proceed to the nearest secure location.]

“Not yet.”

Ethan wasn't ready to run.

He wanted to know who was following him.

He drove toward a busy shopping district and parked outside a large building.

The moment he stepped out, the sedan stopped across the street.

Two men remained inside.

Ethan entered the building.

A few seconds later, one of the men followed.

Ethan walked through the crowd and disappeared around a corner.

The man hurried after him.

Then stopped.

Ethan was gone.

A voice came from behind him.

“Looking for someone?”

The man turned.

Ethan stood several feet away.

The man immediately reached into his jacket.

Ethan activated Physical Enhancement.

Before the man could react, Ethan grabbed his wrist.

“Who sent you?”

The man struggled.

“Let go.”

“Evelyn Cross?”

The man's expression changed.

That was enough.

Ethan released him.

The man ran.

Ethan didn't chase.

He had already learned what he needed.

Evelyn was definitely involved.

That afternoon, Ethan received an unexpected invitation.

Not a message.

A physical envelope.

It was delivered to his penthouse by a private courier.

Inside was a single card.

Mr. Ethan Vale,

You have been invited to a private dinner tonight.

Location: Hart Residence.

Time: 8:00 p.m.

There was no signature.

Ethan immediately thought of Amelia Hart.

The woman from the gala.

The woman whose father had known Daniel Vale.

He almost threw the invitation away.

Then the system appeared.

[Opportunity detected.]

[The Hart family possesses information related to Daniel Vale.]

[Recommendation: Accept invitation.]

Ethan smiled.

“Fine.”

At exactly eight o'clock, Ethan arrived at the Hart residence.

It wasn't as extravagant as the Cross mansion, but it was clearly owned by an extremely wealthy family.

A servant led Ethan into a private dining room.

Amelia was waiting.

She stood when he entered.

“You came.”

“You invited me.”

“I didn't.”

Ethan stopped.

“What?”

Amelia pointed toward the table.

“My father did.”

Ethan looked toward the other end of the room.

An elderly man sat there.

His hair was gray, and he used a walking stick.

But his eyes were sharp.

“Ethan Vale.”

Ethan sat down.

“Mr. Hart.”

The old man studied him.

“You look remarkably like your father.”

“You knew him well?”

“Better than most.”

“Then tell me what happened.”

Mr. Hart remained silent for a moment.

“Your father discovered something dangerous.”

“What?”

“A secret account.”

Ethan leaned forward.

“V-Prime Holdings?”

Mr. Hart's eyes narrowed.

“You already know about it.”

“Yes.”

“Then you are farther along than I expected.”

“What was the account used for?”

“Money wasn't the real purpose.”

Ethan frowned.

“What do you mean?”

“The money was being used to finance something.”

“What?”

Mr. Hart looked at Amelia.

She slowly nodded.

He continued.

“Three years ago, your father discovered that several powerful businessmen were secretly working together. They were using companies and financial institutions to control investments across the city.”

Ethan listened carefully.

“Who was involved?”

Mr. Hart named three people.

“Victor Cross.”

“Marcus Hale.”

“And Evelyn Cross.”

Ethan's expression hardened.

“Why would Evelyn betray her own family?”

Mr. Hart shook his head.

“You're assuming she betrayed them.”

Ethan went silent.

“What are you saying?”

“I believe Evelyn was investigating them.”

“Then why did she disappear?”

“Because she discovered something even bigger.”

“What?”

Mr. Hart leaned forward.

“She discovered where the money was really going.”

Ethan's heart raced.

“Where?”

Before Mr. Hart could answer, the lights went out.

Amelia stood immediately.

“Father?”

The room fell silent.

A loud crash came from somewhere downstairs.

Ethan stood.

“Stay here.”

He moved toward the door.

Amelia grabbed his arm.

“Ethan, don't.”

He looked at her.

“What?”

“My father has security everywhere. If something happened, they would already be here.”

Ethan realized she was right.

Then the system appeared.

[Threat detected.]

[Multiple intruders.]

[Estimated number: 5.]

Ethan looked toward the hallway.

Footsteps were approaching.

He activated Physical Enhancement.

The first intruder appeared.

Ethan moved quickly, knocking the man's weapon away and forcing him backward.

Two more entered.

Amelia pulled her father away from the door.

Ethan defended the room long enough for the household security team to arrive.

The intruders fled through the rear entrance.

Ethan followed them outside.

But by the time he reached the driveway, they were gone.

Something had been left behind.

A black envelope.

Ethan picked it up.

Inside was a photograph.

His father.

Ethan stared.

Daniel Vale was standing beside a young woman.

Evelyn Cross.

But that wasn't what shocked him.

Behind them stood another person.

Ethan recognized him immediately.

Adrian Cross.

The photograph had been taken three years ago.

Adrian had been there.

Ethan turned around.

Amelia had followed him outside.

“You know him,” Ethan said.

“Who?”

“Adrian.”

She looked at the photograph.

Her face changed.

“Yes.”

“What aren't you telling me?”

Amelia looked away.

“My father told me never to speak about that night.”

“Why?”

“Because Adrian wasn't supposed to be there.”

Ethan's eyes narrowed.

“What happened?”

“I don't know.”

“Truth Scan.”

The system activated.

[Amelia Hart.]

Truth probability: 67%.

Ethan stared at her.

“You know more.”

Amelia sighed.

“I know Adrian met your father that night.”

“Why?”

“I don't know.”

“You're lying.”

Her eyes filled with worry.

“I saw them arguing.”

“About what?”

“Your father's system.”

Ethan froze.

For several seconds, he couldn't speak.

“My... system?”

Amelia nodded slowly.

“Daniel told Adrian that someone had discovered it.”

Ethan's heart began pounding.

“Who?”

“I don't know.”

“Was my father talking about the Ultimate Wealth System?”

Amelia looked at him.

“Yes.”

The world seemed to go silent.

His father had known about the system.

Maybe he had possessed it.

Maybe that was why he disappeared.

The system suddenly appeared.

[Critical information discovered.]

[Previous System Host identified.]

Ethan stared at the screen.

[Previous Host: Daniel Vale.]

His breathing stopped.

His father had been the previous host.

Then another notification appeared.

[System memory fragment available.]

[Would the host like to unlock the first memory?]

Ethan's hand trembled.

“Yes.”

The screen flickered.

A distorted image appeared.

Daniel Vale stood in a dark room.

He looked directly toward the camera.

“Ethan, if you have activated the system, then I'm already gone.”

Ethan stared at his father's face.

Daniel continued.

“They will tell you I betrayed everyone.”

“Don't believe them.”

“The system chose you because you are the only person I trust.”

The image suddenly became distorted.

Daniel's final words were barely audible.

“Find the Golden Boy.”

The screen disappeared.

Ethan looked at Amelia.

“Adrian.”

She nodded.

“But why?”

Ethan didn't answer.

He looked toward the dark city.

His father had left him a mission.

Find the Golden Boy.

And for the first time, Ethan realized that Adrian Cross wasn't simply his enemy.

He might be the key to finding his father.

His phone vibrated.

A message appeared from an unknown number.

You finally found the first piece.

Then another message.

Come to the old Cross research facility alone.

Ethan stared at the screen.

The system immediately appeared.

[New Main Mission Activated.]

Objective: Enter the abandoned Cross Research Facility.

Reward: $10,000,000.

Warning: Previous System Host records may be located inside.

Ethan smiled coldly.

“Then that's where I'm going.”
