Chapter 14: The Gate of Betrayal
The man beneath the archway smiled.“Welcome to the Iron Wall, heir of Valerius.”Billy stood motionless. The royal insignia on the man’s armor glimmered beneath the torchlight. He carried a sword with a silver hilt, its blade pointed toward the ground.Behind him, the inner gate remained open. Beyond the gate, the night was silent.Faelan raised his bow.“Step away from the gate.”The man chuckled.“Still giving orders, Faelan? I thought you had abandoned the kingdom years ago.”“I abandoned its politics. Not its people.”“Then you should have stayed away.”The man lifted his sword.“My name is Lord Edric Veyr. Commander of the Iron Wall. And tonight, I welcome the return of a bloodline that should have remained buried.”Billy glanced at Rowan.“Is he the commander?”Rowan nodded grimly.“Lord Veyr. The man who commands the fortress.”Billy turned back to the man.“Why are you helping Malakor?”Veyr’s smile faded.“Helping? No, boy. I am correcting a mistake.”He stepped forward.“Yo
Chapter 13: The Traitor Behind The Iron Wall
The soldiers did not move aside. Their armor bore the crest of the Ashen Kingdom, but the black cloth tied around their arms told a different story. Three silver lines glimmered in the torchlight. Billy stood behind Faelan, his injured hand wrapped in a strip of cloth. Beneath it, the crown-shaped mark pulsed faintly.“Find the heir of Valerius,” the commander repeated. “Bring him alive.”Faelan’s fingers tightened around his bow.“Interesting,” he muttered. “I always thought Ashen’s soldiers were trained to recognize their own uniforms.”The commander’s helmet tilted.“Faelan of the Whisperwood. You have no authority here.”“Neither do you, apparently. Unless the fortress has started tying suspicious decorations to its soldiers.”A few men shifted uneasily. The commander raised his hand.“Take them.” The soldiers advanced.Faelan moved first. His arrow struck the torch beside the nearest soldier, sending sparks scattering across the ground. In the brief confusion, he seized Billy by
Chapter 12: The Dagger from the Darkness
The Fate Pen trembled inside Billy's pocket.“Son of Valerius…”The voice came again from beyond the mist.Billy couldn't see who had spoken. All he could make out was a colossal shadow moving among the extinguished torches.Faelan drew his bowstring tighter.“Don't answer it,” the elf whispered.Billy turned toward him. “Do you know who that is?”“I know we need to leave before he decides to come closer.”“He called my name.”“Not your name. Your family name.”“I don't even know if Valerius is really my family!”“Then you can look for answers once we're no longer surrounded by an Orc army.”An arrow shot from the cliff above. Faelan twisted aside. The arrow struck the rock beside his head.“Now!” he shouted.Billy ran. He didn't look back when the Orcs' cries echoed behind him. He didn't stop when the sound of approaching footsteps filled the gorge. Faelan followed, firing two arrows to force their pursuers into cover. But this time, Billy noticed something. The Orcs weren't shooting
Chapter 11: Ashes on the Wind
The wind carried the stench of death from the north. Billy noticed it before he saw the smoke hanging beyond the trees. He stopped. Faelan continued walking for three more steps before turning around.“What is it?”Billy lifted his head. “Something is burning.”“Good. That means your nose still works.”“It doesn’t smell like wood.”Faelan’s faint smile disappeared. For the first time since they had left Oakhaven, the elf made no sarcastic remark. He raised his bow.“Get down.”Billy immediately crouched. Faelan moved toward the ridge, light as a shadow. Billy followed with considerable difficulty. His wounds had not fully healed. Every long stride sent a dull ache through his side. When they reached the crest, the sight below made Billy freeze.A small village stood between two hills, or rather, what remained of one. The rooftops had collapsed. Wooden fences lay broken. Thin smoke rose from smoldering ruins. An overturned wagon blocked the main road, and the sun emblem on a wooden si
Chapter 10: Toward the Iron Wall of Ashen
Thin, copper-scented smoke rose from the small crater in the middle of Oakhaven's village road.Billy coughed, brushing away the limestone fragments covering his chest. In the distance, the corpse of the third Orc that had crushed him now lay rigid among the ruins of the collapsed grain warehouse. Parts of the giant monster's body were charred, as though it had just been struck by lightning at point-blank range.Billy raised his still-trembling right hand in front of his eyes."What the hell... is this?" Billy rasped. On his right palm, the torn wound he had suffered from punching the scaled weasel's snout several days ago had closed unnaturally. Over the newly healed skin, a reddish-gold tattoo glowed faintly, shaped like a three-pronged crown surrounded by twisting thorny vines. A warm pulse throbbed beneath his skin in rhythm with his heartbeat.Slow footsteps approached, then stopped at the edge of the cracked crater.Billy looked up.Faelan stood there, staring at Billy's hand wi
Chapter 9: The Bloodline Awakens
Faelan's grip on Billy's shoulder tightened like an iron vise."Don't move, idiot," Faelan whispered sharply. His silver eyes remained fixed on the three monsters in the village square. "Three trained Orc soldiers against one Ranger with limited arrows and one crippled human kid. That's not a fight. That's tactical suicide.""Let me go, Faelan!" Billy hissed through clenched teeth, his eyes locked on the village girl being dragged across the ground. "You see that? They're about to cut her throat! You just wanna stand there and watch, like when I was about to die in that ravine?!""That's the law of this world!" Faelan snapped coldly. "One girl's life isn't worth both of ours! We have to take this warning to the Ashen Kingdom!""Fuck the Ashen Kingdom!" Billy cut in, his voice strained beneath the surge of rage. "Back home, men in suits watched orphan kids die from overdoses and called it 'the cost of doing business.' And now you want me to stand here and watch someone's throat get cut
