Ava Bennet’s piercing stare lingered even after Jessica had forced a smile and murmured a polite greeting.

The air in the corridor grew tense as she repeated, facing Brandon.

"Speak! How did you get here?"

“Maybe the same way you ended up here. I've got nothing more to say. I’m leaving,” Brandon replied sharply.

But just then, Ava raised her voice.

“Stop right there. Did I say you could go?” Ava’s tone dripped venom with her chin tilted high as if she were addressing a servant.

Upon seeing this, Jessica’s stomach clenched.

The sheer arrogance in the older woman’s posture made her uneasy.

She was about to explain, but Brandon’s voice broke the tension first.

“I’ve already discussed the divorce with Sophia,” he said firmly.

“From now on, wherever I go, whatever I do, is none of your business.”

Ava was initially shocked to learn that Brandon had divorced Sophia. She couldn’t even pinpoint when it had happened.

But the surprise faded quickly.

In her mind, Brandon had always been nothing more than a useless live-in son-in-law, so what was so remarkable about their marriage finally ending?

Ava’s lips curled into a sneer.

“How dare you? So just because you’re divorced, you think you can do whatever you want? That you can disregard your elders?”

Her eyes gleamed with malice as she leaned closer with her voice rising.

“Look at you—you're just a useless stray. So shameless!

She stared at him with venom, then turned her cold gaze toward Jessica.

“So this is your mistress?” she asked mockingly. “You really aren’t picky, are you? You’ll take anything that throws itself at you.”

Jessica stiffened as heat rushed to her cheeks.

She never liked to be involved in arguments or misunderstandings.

Her throat tightened, but she forced herself not to speak. This wasn’t her fight.

Just then, she heard Brandon’s voice cut through the air.

“Has anyone ever told you that respect works both ways?”

The authority in his tone should have silenced the corridor.

But Ava reacted as if he’d just told the funniest joke in the world. She burst out laughing with her back bending with the force of her mockery.

“Respect?” she repeated with a sharp, mocking laugh.

“You? A leech who’s been living off my daughter’s hard work for years? Don’t make me laugh.”

Her words dripped with venom as her friends snickered, whispering among themselves, their gazes flicking between Brandon and Jessica.

Jessica’s pulse quickened and her hands clenched at her sides as anger and humiliation burned in her chest.

She couldn’t stand hearing Ava publicly insult Brandon anymore.

“Enough!” she burst out.

“You will not talk to him like that. Whether he’s your son-in-law or not, Brandon is a man who’s earned respect—and he deserves far better than your cruelty!”

The words tumbled out before she could stop herself.

Ava’s head snapped toward her, her smile twisting into fury.

“Shut up!”

The slap of the words stung more than any hand.

Jessica recoiled as Ava’s voice boomed through the hall.

“Who are you to butt in while I’m teaching a worthless fool a lesson?”

Ava hissed with her eyes ablaze. “Know your place!”

Jessica’s lips pressed together. She didn’t want to be involved in a quarrel.

But Brandon had saved her life, and from the look of things, Ava was getting out of hand.

Watching him slandered and humiliated like this, gnawed at her conscience.

She took a careful breath, trying to handle the matter calmly this time.

“Even though there’s some misunderstanding between you, Sophia, and Brandon. I don’t know the details, but—”

“Misunderstanding?” Ava cut her off, her laugh sharp and cutting.

“Oh, I see what this is now.”

“You’re just as much a fool as he is. Ever since you started sleeping with him—who knows for how long—you think like him!”

Her eyes narrowed and her lips curled into a mocking smile.

Jessica’s heart lurched, her face burning.

“And he’s given you money too, hasn’t he?” Ava pressed on, her voice loud enough to echo. “That’s what this is all about. A shameless slut clinging to scraps!”

Before Jessica could react, Ava shoved her hard.

Jessica stumbled back a step, catching herself against the cold wall.

“Hand it over,” Ava snarled, her voice dripping with contempt. “Whatever he’s given you—it’s all my family’s money! You think you can pocket it? Never!"

The shift didn’t announce itself. There was no alarm, no sudden collapse, no visible sign that anything had changed. But everything had.Dave saw it first. Not with certainty—but with instinct. He stood in front of the reconstructed model, eyes locked on the newest layer he had uncovered. It wasn’t part of the original framework he had been mapping. It wasn’t tied directly to Victor Hale either. It sat… beneath.Or perhaps above.A secondary structure that didn’t behave like the rest.Dave leaned closer, his voice low.“You’re not just part of it, are you…” he murmured. “You’re being managed.”The idea didn’t unsettle him.It intrigued him.Because if Brandon wasn’t at the top—and Victor Hale wasn’t the only axis—then the system had depth far beyond what anyone had assumed. And depth meant weakness.Every structure, no matter how well built, had pressure points.Dave just needed to find them.He picked up his phone and dialed immediately.“Reassemble the team,” he said as soon as the

The first crack didn’t stay small for long.Dave stood in front of the glowing screen for a long time after the room emptied out. The analysts had stepped back, giving him space, sensing that whatever he was looking at wasn’t just data anymore—it was direction. The map on the screen pulsed faintly, lines connecting unseen systems, financial pathways, and buried relationships that didn’t belong to any single company or family. It belonged to something larger. And at the center—still partially obscured—was Victor Hale.Dave narrowed his eyes.“This isn’t just influence,” he repeated under his breath. “It’s a network that predates all of them.”He stepped closer.“And Brandon is inside it… not outside it.”That realization changed the way everything he had assumed before now had to be recalculated.A few meters away, one of the analysts spoke carefully.“Sir… there’s something else.”Dave didn’t turn. “Say it.”“We found a trigger point,” the analyst said. “A node in the system that acti

Jessica stared at Brandon, her voice barely steady.“What truth?” she asked.Brandon didn’t answer immediately. He lowered his phone slowly, as if weighing whether speaking aloud would make it more real.“They accessed a sealed layer of records,” he said at last. “A list I didn’t expect them to reach this early.”Jessica’s chest tightened. “And what does it contain?”Brandon turned away from her slightly, gaze fixed on the distant city lights.“Names,” he said. “Connections. Roles people thought were erased.”A pause. Then, more quietly:“And my name wasn’t just on it… it was classified.”Jessica felt her throat dry.“Classified by who?” she asked.Brandon finally looked at her.“By Victor Hale.”The name landed heavier this time. Not as theory. Not as rumor. But as authority.Jessica took a step back. “So Dave is right—there really is something bigger behind all of this.”Brandon nodded once.“Yes.”“And you never thought this would come out?” she pressed.“I did,” he said calmly. “J

Jessica stood frozen, her eyes fixed on Brandon as his words settled between them like a quiet storm.“A past that changes everything?” she repeated slowly. “What does that even mean, Brandon?”Brandon didn’t answer immediately. He turned back to the window, his reflection staring at him as though it carried memories he had long kept buried. For a moment, it felt like time had paused—like the present had stepped aside to make room for something older.Something unresolved.“You deserve to know,” he finally said.Jessica took a step closer, her heart pounding. “Then tell me.”Brandon nodded once. And then he began.“I wasn’t always… this,” he said, gesturing vaguely to everything around him—the success, the control, the influence.Jessica stayed silent, listening.“There was a time,” Brandon continued, “when I had nothing. No connections, no opportunities. Just… survival.”His voice wasn’t bitter. It was factual.“I tried to build something the normal way,” he added. “I failed. Repeate

The name sat on the screen like a quiet threat.Dave didn’t blink.“Say it again,” he said. The analyst swallowed lightly. “We’re still verifying, but the pattern keeps repeating across hidden transactions, early-stage funding channels, and off-record approvals. The name is… Victor Hale.”Dave’s brows drew together.“Victor Hale?” he repeated slowly. “That name doesn’t ring anywhere in public records.”“That’s because it doesn’t exist in any official registry,” the analyst replied. “No corporate filings, no tax records, no verified identity. It’s like… a ghost.”Dave stared at the screen. Then smiled faintly.“A ghost that built an empire from the shadows,” he said. “Interesting.”He straightened.“Find everything,” he ordered. “I don’t care how deep it goes. If this Victor Hale is the foundation behind Brandon, then that’s where we break him.”At the same time, Brandon stood in a quiet, dimly lit room—far removed from the noise of the city.It wasn’t his office. It wasn’t his apartme

Across the city, Dave’s operation had intensified. In a dim, secure room, multiple screens flickered with data—old records, financial logs, archived documents, surveillance reports. A small team worked tirelessly, tracing every possible lead.“Anything new?” Dave asked, his voice low but firm. One of the analysts hesitated before responding.“We found something… unusual.”Dave stepped closer. “Explain.”“There are transactions linked to shell companies,” the analyst said, pointing to a cluster of data. “They don’t connect directly to Brandon—but the timing matches his early moves. Whoever set this up knew how to stay invisible.”Dave’s eyes narrowed.“So he didn’t build from nothing,” he said quietly. “He built from shadows.”The analyst nodded. “That’s what it looks like.”Dave leaned forward, studying the screen.“And the origin?” he asked. The analyst shook his head. “Still unclear. But there’s a pattern—whoever backed him… has done this before.”That changed everything.Dave strai
