Daniel's POV
************************************************ "Behind me," Daniel said, already in motion, already positioning himself between the window and his family before Rachel had even lowered the phone fully. The car door swung open. A figure crossed the street fast, hunched low, glancing over one shoulder every few strides, not the gait of someone approaching to attack. It was the movement of someone fleeing. Daniel had the door unlocked and open before the figure reached the building, some old instinct insisting the danger was not standing directly in front of him yet. It was a woman. Thirties, drenched from the rain, eyes wide with the specific kind of fear that never fakes convincingly. A button had torn loose from her coat somewhere along the way, and her hands shook badly enough that the envelope she carried rattled audibly against her knuckles. "You are Daniel Marsh, " she said "Marcus said you have been here. I'm Priya. Priya Anand. I used to work logistics for …" "Cole Industries," Daniel finished. "Bull mentioned you." "He did not tell you nearly enough, because I only just uncovered this myself." She shoved a torn manila envelope into his hands, glancing back toward the street as though the darkness itself might be listening. "He is not sending anyone tonight. He is coming personally. Whoever that has been orchestrating this, Cole is not who you need to fear anymore. There is someone above him, someone who had eyes on your family for …" Headlights swung hard around the corner, too fast, severing whatever she was about to reveal. Priya's whole body flinched toward the sound before her mind caught up with what it meant. "They found me," she said, voice cracking. "I thought I had shaken them three blocks back." "Get inside," Daniel said, already pulling her toward the door. He did not make it. Two men were out of the car before it had fully stopped, moving with the flat, efficient speed of people who had done this before. One seized Priya's arm; she screamed once before a hand clamped over her mouth, and then she was being dragged backward across wet pavement, the envelope still clutched in Daniel's fist, her eyes locked on his the entire time she was hauled away. Daniel lunged to follow and felt a hand close hard on his shoulder from behind. "Not like this." Bull's voice, low and urgent, emerged from the dark like he had been waiting for precisely this moment to surface. "Two against one, and your family's still standing in that doorway. You go, they are the ones left exposed." "They are taking her, Marcus." "I know." Bull's jaw had gone tight enough to crack. "And we are getting her back. Not by dying on a street corner while your wife and daughter watch it happen." Daniel forced his weight backward, every muscle screaming against the decision even as his mind, colder and faster than his fear, confirmed Bull was right. Two operatives, an idling vehicle, an extraction already half-completed before Daniel had even fully registered the threat. This was not improvised street violence. This was a rehearsed operation. The car peeled away with Priya inside, taillights swallowed by darkness within seconds. Daniel stood frozen, the envelope trembling in his grip, her single scream still echoing in his ears. "They knew she was coming here," Daniel said, once the street had gone quiet again. "This was not random, Marcus. They followed her, waited for contact, then grabbed her the instant she had handed off whatever she came to give me." "Which means they wanted you to have what is in that envelope," Bull said grimly. "Taking her after the handoff instead of before she tells you everything about their priorities. Not stopping the information from reaching you but punishing her for delivering it." Daniel's fist tightened around the torn manila envelope. "Then we do not waste what she risked everything for." "No," Bull agreed. "We will not. But not standing on your front step, because whoever just drove off knows exactly where you live now, assuming they did not already." Rachel appeared in the doorway then, Lily half-asleep against her shoulder, her face bloodless with fear that had nowhere left to retreat. "Daniel. What just happened. Who was that woman?" "Someone trying to help us," Daniel said, crossing to her fast, scanning the street once more before pulling the door shut behind them all. "Someone who just paid the price for it." "Is she going to be okay?" Daniel did not answer immediately, because no honest answer existed that would not terrify her further, and because some small, exhausted corner of his mind was not certain himself. He thought of the way Priya's eyes had held his the entire time she was dragged away, not pleading exactly, but insisting, “do not let this be for nothing” and that look settled into his chest like a stone he had be carrying for a long time. "We are going to get her back," he said instead, which was true, and would have to be enough for tonight. "But we can not do it standing here. Move fast. We are leaving." Lily stirred against Rachel's shoulder, blinking up with the groggy confusion of a child yanked too suddenly from sleep. "Mommy, why is everybody yelling?" "We are playing a quiet game, baby," Rachel said, her voice finding a steadiness Daniel had not expected, forcing itself into place for her daughter's benefit even as her hands trembled visibly. "The quietest, fastest game we have ever played." "Inside," Bull said. "Now. We move, or the next car pulling up is coming for you three." Daniel herded them back through the doorway, his mind already racing three steps ahead, the envelope, the storage unit Bull had mentioned in passing, the mounting certainty that whoever had just taken Priya has not finished collecting people who knew too much. He glanced down at the torn manila envelope still gripped in his fist, rain-soaked and heavier than paper had any right to feel, and understood, with a cold certainty settling deep in his chest, exactly what it had cost someone to deliver. "Grab what you need," he told Rachel quietly. "We are not coming back here tonight."Latest Chapter
CHAPTER 26: The Price on Daniel's Head
Rachel's POV************************************************Rachel heard the number through the phone's speaker and felt something inside her chest go entirely, permanently cold, a fear so specific and enormous it didn't even feel like fear anymore, just a kind of numb, terrible clarity settling over everything at once. Two million dollars. Not a threat, not intimidation, but an actual, standing offer, real money attached to her husband's life like a price tag on something already sold. She thought of every stranger they might pass on any ordinary street from now on, every neighbor, every delivery driver, every person who might glance twice at Daniel's face and do the math on what that recognition could be worth."Daniel," she said, voice barely steady, "that car outside. If there's actually a bounty""I know," Daniel said grimly, already ending
CHAPTER 25: Pratt's Confession
Daniel's POV************************************************"We don't have time to sit and wait for that car to make a decision," Bull said, already checking the loaded weapon in his hands, eyes never leaving the tree line. "We need to move, now, before whoever's in it decides we're worth the risk of approaching directly.""Give me five minutes," Daniel said, already dialing Tyrell back, adrenaline sharpening his focus into something cold and precise. "I need Pratt's number. Right now.""Daniel, we don't have five minutes""We make time." Daniel held up a hand, phone pressed to his ear, Tyrell picking up on the second ring, his voice already tight with fresh nerves. "I need Pratt's cell number," Daniel said, cutting off whatever Tyrell had been about to say. "Now, Tyrell. This matters more than you know."There was a pause, pap
CHAPTER 24: The Coworker Who Remembered
Daniel's POV************************************************Daniel's phone buzzed just after noon, an unfamiliar number flashing across the screen, and he answered it warily, old instinct keeping his voice flat and careful."It's Tyrell," the voice on the other end said, before Daniel could even speak. "From the warehouse. Don't hang up, man, I know this is weird, but I need you to hear me out."Daniel felt something loosen slightly in his chest, an old, ordinary connection to a life that felt impossibly distant now, the smell of diesel and cardboard, the ache in his shoulders after a full shift, problems that had once felt enormous and now seemed almost quaint compared to everything since. "How did you get this number, Tyrell?""Called around. Found somebody who knew somebody." Tyrell's voice carried a nervous energy Daniel didn't remember fro
CHAPTER 23: A Father-in-Law's New Loyalty
Harrison's POV************************************************Harrison had spent eight years believing loyalty was something purchased with resources, offered on his own terms and withdrawn the moment those terms stopped being met. Sitting in the corner of a borrowed fishing shack, listening to his eight-year-old granddaughter recite a single overheard name with more courage than most grown men Harrison had ever employed, he understood, with the particular clarity that only shame ever seemed to produce, exactly how wrong he'd been about that his entire life.He thought, unbidden, of every Sunday dinner he'd spent mocking Daniel across a table set for twenty, every casual cruelty he'd dressed up as concern for his daughter's welfare. He'd told himself for eight years that his coldness toward Daniel was protection, a father's instinct to t
CHAPTER 22: What Lily Doesn't Know Yet
Rachel's POV************************************************Rachel found Lily sitting alone on the shack's narrow back porch an hour later, knees pulled up to her chest, watching the sun climb properly over the tree line for the first time since this nightmare had started. She was still wearing the same rumpled clothes from two nights ago, her hair a tangled mess Rachel hadn't had a spare moment to help her fix, and something about the sight of her daughter looking so small and disheveled against the vast, indifferent morning broke something loose in Rachel's chest that three days of pure survival instinct hadn't managed to touch, a grief so sharp and sudden it nearly stole the breath from her lungs entirely. She stood in the doorway a moment before joining her, watching Lily's small shoulders rise and fall with each breath, memorizing the shape of
CHAPTER 21: Hiding Isn't Living
Daniel's POV************************************************Nobody spoke for a long moment after Bull lowered the phone, the shack's single overhead bulb buzzing faintly into a silence thick enough to feel physical. Daniel watched his oldest friend's face, watched the particular stillness settle over him that Daniel recognized from years of missions gone sideways, not panic, but the cold, careful shutdown of a man forcing himself to keep functioning through something that should have broken him completely. The rain had finally stopped outside, leaving behind only the steady drip of water off the eaves and the distant, indifferent call of birds beginning their morning as though nothing at all had happened in the world overnight."He said your name," Daniel said quietly. "All our names.""He said enough," Bull said, and set the phone down on the
