“Nora.” He mouthed, his voice barely audible.

“Yeah.”

“The patriarch may have left you there. The other members of the Bedford family may have used you as a shield but I need you to remember that I am Nicholas Belford. I am not the patriarch and I am not any of the other members of the Belford family. I will not leave you to die. I will not let you get hurt. By the way, what’s the use of a bodyguard when they are dead.”

“By the way, who is going to keep me in check and give me a pretty hot tosh to look at when you are gone.”

Nora punched his side. He groaned, chuckling. She smiled. ‘Tsk,’ he was being ridiculous right now. Trying to make her not to worry and all. It was stupid but no matter how she looked at it, it was also pretty good.

The burner phone started to ring. The two looked down at Nicholas’ jacket pocket immediately.

“We haven’t called anyone. So who is calling?” Nora looked at Nicholas.

“Pick it up. This is a Stellar-grade burner phone. Even if it’s the greatest tech geek

There were many things that Nicholas had to take in at once.Harold knew that they was there. And he wanted them to join him at his table. And this girl had called him her uncle. It was a lot of unpack. He looked up at the girl, searching for some proof of deceit, but the genuineness in her expression wasn't faked. Whatever Harold was planning, it didn't involve this girl. She probably thought she was inviting her uncle's friends over or something.Nora glanced at Nicholas, silently asking what they should do. Nicholas shrugged and stood up."That's nice of your uncle. Let's go, Nora," he said. The girl beamed."He's right over there," she said, leading the way. They got to the table, and Harold had the nerve to smile at them. As if they were all old friends or something. Nicholas was tempted to tell him how creepy a cheerful expression looked on him."It's good to see you," Harold said. "Nicholas. Nora."Beside him, Nicholas felt Nora shift uncomfortably. How come Harold knew her nam

  • CHAPTER 131

Nicholas seemed to have decided that he trusted her again, and Nora didn't know what to do with that. Did that mean that she'd passed the test? Could it really be that simple? She tried not to let him notice her wary gaze as their private jet approached its destination. He didn't look bothered enough for someone who was going to confront the most powerful founding father in the Belford family. In fact, from what she could see, he was texting Natalie. She was about to blow a fuse over here, yet he was so relaxed. It was unsettling."Are you sure about this?" she asked. Just to put an end to this weird atmosphere."I wouldn't be going if I wasn't," he replied."But there could be traps," she said. "This is Harold we're talking about.""You think I'm not prepared for that possibility?" he retorted. "Besides, you said it yourself. Harold doesn't reveal the location of these meetings to anyone, not even his own cohorts. Who would be lying in wait to implement such a trap?"Nora had to admi

  • CHAPTER 130

"What do you know about Harold?" Nicholas asked.Nora glanced at him, surprised. It was shocking enough that he had summoned her after keeping her away from his business for so long. Now he was actually asking for her help with something?"Not much," she replied. "A lot of Harold's power relies on the fact that no one really knows anything about him. He's mysterious and unpredictable. That's what makes him more dangerous than any of the other founding fathers.""Well, I'm going to need you to find out everything you can about him," Nicholas said. "You can do that, can't you?"'What a tone,' Nora thought. But she saw this interaction for what it was: a test. Nicholas was testing her loyalty with this task. For a moment, Nora wanted to laugh.Nicholas was very clever for coming up with this. She couldn't deny that. Months of working for him had made it easy for her to predict his thought pattern. Since he suspected that she was affiliated with High Mother's orphanage, he probably also s

  • CHAPTER 129

"She's dead," Kabuto said, looking up from High Mother's body."So that woman actually killed herself," Nicholas muttered. All because she didn't want to be defeated by him."So, what are you going to do now?" Kabuto asked. "Getting information from her was unfortunately unsuccessful.""Not entirely," Nicholas replied. "She mentioned someone, didn't she?""Yes," Kabuto said. "Jerome.""Any idea who he is?" Nicholas asked."Nope. Not ringing any bells. But he was her accomplice, from the sound of it," he said."Or her superior," Nicholas mused. There was something about the way she had said it.'You think I'm your enemy? You don't know anything. If you knew what Jerome has in store for you, you'd be freaking terrified!'She had implied that this Jerome was somehow worse than her."Great. Another mystery," Nicholas muttered."By the way, how do you think she found out about your no-killing rule?" Kabuto asked. "Do you think she was spying on you?""Probably," Nicholas replied. He saw th

  • CHAPTER 128

High Mother had been certain that she would be prepared, if Nicholas ever got it into his head to attack her. Despite what she had said to Jerome, she wasn't actually so indifferent about the prospect of Nicholas coming to take revenge on her. She had doubled her security, increased the surveillance, and sent out shoot on sight orders to every soul in her house. In the end, it still wasn't enough. If it was, she wouldn't be standing in her room right now, listening to her two closest guards tell her that she had to escape."He has almost taken over the entire mansion," one of them was saying. "He'll be here soon. You have to leave, High Mother. You're not safe here."High Mother gritted her teeth. The last thing she wanted to do was run away from her own house just because of that brat, but she knew she had no choice."Fine," she said. "But I will make him pay for embarrassing me like this."There was a trapdoor hidden at the back of her walk-in closet, which had been designed specifi

  • CHAPTER 127

Nicholas's silence had gone on for quite a while, so Kabuto decided to speak."Are you going to do something about it, or what?" he said. "She could be dead before dusk. You just have to say the word.""Why is everything always murder with you?" Nicholas replied, exasperated. "You do know there are other ways to handle a situation, right?""Oh, come on," Kabuto said. "I get that you want to be a good person or whatever, but this woman killed your father. And if you let her get away with it, she'll kill you too. I'm pretty sure she's fair game at this point.""I am not killing anyone, and neither are you," Nicholas snapped.Keeping his cool was hard enough without this man saying such unhelpful things.Clearly, Kabuto couldn't take a hint, because he continued to run his mouth."What, you're not even going to try to avenge your father?" he said. "The patriarch would be very disappointed, you know. If the roles had been reversed, he would have done everything to make her pay for—""Get
