The receptionist froze on the spot. Blood drained from her face.

The hotel owner?

She itched to turn in Nicolas direction and give him one last look, but she couldn't. She wouldn't even be able to look him in the eye.

She had completely forgotten about the black card. During their orientation, they had gotten long explanations for the holders of gold, silver and bronze cards. The orientation for the black card had been a whole topic on its own. There was just one black card.

In her entire year working there, all card colors have been used except for the black one. It was easy for her to just tuck it at the back of her mind such that when it finally came, she couldn't remember that it was the revered black card that they had always looked out for.

But…

Nicolas hadn't looked like someone who could own such a distinguished card.

She turned to Nicolas’ direction, her head bowed down in shame as she pleaded. She couldn't mess up her job. “I'm sorry, sir. I didn't mean to treat you the way I did. It was just a precaution to protect the hotel. I didn't want riffraffs occupying the space. I deeply apologize for how I treated you.”

“So you mean I look like a riffraff,” Nicolas pointed out.

“Not at all, sir," she shook her head rigorously. "I didn't mean…"

Nicolas knew she meant it. They always did.. But hers was a bit understandable. He had been in the same clothes since the day began and it hadn't been a normal day. It had been filled with vomits and him waking up in a bush and a fight. He must still treat everyone you meet with utmost respect, every human deserves it unless they prove otherwise with their behaviour.

“Please, forgive me, sir. This will never repeat itself.”

Nicolas shook his head. “Look, just give me the card to a suite. She needs to rest.”

Ofcourse, sir.

The bank manager scrambled to his feet and rushed behind the counter to prepare a suite for Nicolas.

He arranged for him to stay in the most luxurious suite. “This suite is never available for public booking and is exclusively reserved for the black cardholder,” he explained to Nicolas.

Nicolas' merely nodded, uninterested. He took the card from him. A room is a room. As long as Natalie could get adequate rest in it, it was okay.

“I could send you an escort,” the manager suggested.

Nicolas shook his head, ignoring the vomit on Natalie's body as he carried her bridal style and headed toward the luxurious suite that the manager had described for him.

The room did not disappoint. In fact, it looked much more luxurious than the word luxurious. It was a beautiful room but Nicolas didn't have the time to admire the suite.

Natalie had just let out a painful moan and murmured that her head hurt.

When Nicolas stepped into the room with the clean white beddings, he knew he couldn't just dump Natalie in it. She was covered in filth.

He had no choice but to head to the bathroom where he undressed her and gave her a quick bath to clean her up.

After cleaning her up, he managed to tie one of the oversized robes around her and took her to the bedroom where he placed her on the bed.

He got cold water, soaked a towel in it and placed it on her forehead.

Nicolas left her to sleep and went to clean up the little mess he had been unable to avoid. From the murky footprints to the splash in the bathroom to his own body. When he was done, he was beyond exhausted. He went to change the towel on Natalie's forehead.

That where he fell asleep rested by the bedside.

Nicolas, having fell asleep had lost track of time. He awoke to a loud shriek.

He glanced up from where he'd fallen asleep on the floor. Natalie was staring around her in panic.

“Are you okay?” He asked.

Natalie finally turned in his direction. Almost immediately, her widened eyes returned to their normal sizes. Her shoulders slumped as she pressed a palm to her chest and released a sigh of relief.

“I knew my brother-in-law would come to my rescue,” were her first words.

Nicolas, reclined against the bed, shook his head. “I no longer go by that title. I'm divorcing your sister,” he said. He intentionally omitted the why or that Sarah and her lover, Alex had plotted to kill him. After the hellish night she had, the last thing he wanted was for her to worry about him or what her sister could be up to.

To his surprise, Natalie was not disappointed or saddened for her sister as he'd expected. Instead, she appeared even happier.

Nicolas was caught off guard when she hugged him tight.

She grinned. “No matter what, I’d always see you as my best friend.”

Sitting stiffly, Nicolas felt like she was consoling him and he wondered why it was him instead of her sister.

Natalie's smile dimmed when she noticed how still Nicolas was. Usually, he'd hug her back and share a joke.

It was only then she noticed the effort Nicolas was putting in to keep his gaze on her face. She looked down and her eyes widened, her mouth let out a loud scream as she pulled away from him.

She had an oversized robe on but the rope had loosened and it had fallen off her shoulders. She realized that under the robe that was barely on her body, she was stark naked.

“Your clothes got ruined by your own vomit,” Nicolas babbled.

After Natalie tied the robe tighter around her, she looked up at Nicolas' embarrassed expression and she couldn't help herself. She burst into a fit of laughter.

Nicolas looked, surprised. Natalie will never cease to marvel at him.

She wiggled her brows, “Were you the one that changed my clothes last night?”

After destroying his family and taking full control of everything they owned, the male lead’s life changed completely. He became the head of a vast business empire. The Belford family that once looked down on him, was gone now and so every company, estate, and asset they once controlled was now under his name. He rebuilt their empire with his own principles replacing corruption and deceit. His public image boomed overnight. The media called him a “self-made heir,” but few understood the blood and loss that came with that title. Investors sought his attention. He led board meetings commanding absolute obedience. Employees respected him. He continued to live in the family’s main mansion, though it was no longer recognizable. The halls were transformed to suite his taste. Expensive art replaced family portraits, modern furniture stood where old relics once gathered dust, and wide glass windows replaced the heavy curtains. This was his way of reclaiming not just a house, but his peace.Fin

  • CHAPTER 136

They weren't able to save Nora. Even though Nicholas had rushed her to the nearest hospital the instant he was out of his handcuffs, it still wasn't enough to save her. In the end, he could only arrange for her to get a funeral befitting a person as great as her. She might have betrayed him due to allegiances she held long before they met, but in her final moments, she had saved him. He would be a fool not to respect that.Afterwards, he returned to Benedict's place first. He had something to tell the man, anyway, so he figured that he might as well return the borrowed goons in person. What he didn't expect was to be surrounded by armed men as soon as he stepped into the house. Benedict descended the stairs to meet him, his expression filled with icy rage."So," he said. "You managed to survive.""Let me guess," Nicholas replied. "You were hoping otherwise?""I thought you would have the good sense to meet your death there. You have no place in the Belford family, and you certainly do

  • CHAPTER 135

Natalie's life was in Jerome's hands, which was the only reason Nicholas allowed himself and Kabuto to be handcuffed and taken to a room upstairs. He and Kabuto were forced to kneel while Jerome sprawled on a chair like it was his throne, looking pleased with himself. Behind him stood Nora. This time, she was the one pressing the gun to Natalie's temple. Natalie's hands and feet were bound, her mouth gagged. She blinked furiously, trying to hold back tears. She couldn't let herself cry. She had to be strong, for Nicholas."So," Jerome said, "I don't believe we've been properly introduced, Nicholas Belford.""Cut the act, 'Belling de Nor'," Nicholas snarled. "What the hell do you want?"Jerome chuckled."So you figured it out," he said. "And here I thought my disguise was perfect. Oh, well. It's not like knowing that is going to help you now.""You must love the sound of your own voice," Nicholas said. "Seeing as you said everything but the answer to my question."Jerome rolled his eye

  • CHAPTER 134

"How do you win a game you don't know the rules of?" Nicholas mumbled.Harold's eyebrows lifted. "Pardon?"Nicholas looked up, startled. He hadn't meant to say that out loud. He returned his gaze to the chessboard sitting on the table between them. It was his move, but he had been so occupied with his thoughts that he barely noticed."Jerome," he clarified. "Trying to beat him is like playing a game. Except that he knows the rules, and sees the whole board. And I don't.""You don't know his identity," Harold agreed. "But he knows yours. His spy has been by your side all this time, but you don't even know what he's thinking. Indeed, you are at a disadvantage.""So how do I win?" Nicholas asked."By paying attention to the board," Harold replied. "And keeping your eyes on the players. Take Jerome, for example. What do you know about him?""That he leads the second faction," Nicholas said. "And he was controlling the proprietress, before she died.""So he was raised in the orphanage," Ha

  • CHAPTER 133

"There are two factions that call the shots at Familia," Harold began. "I'm sure that by now you've figured out that Familia isn't just an orphanage. It's an organization. One more of the many run by the Belford family.""I'm aware of that," Nicholas confirmed. "It seems farfetched, though, that there would be factions tussling over an orphanage. Organization or not.""The orphanage was one of the patriarch's greatest gold mines," Harold said. "It's one thing to hire goons. It's an entirely different thing to raise them. Nurture them. What's going on in that place isn't just training. It's architecture. Those children are being constructed into weapons. You've met them, haven't you? What was your impression?"Nicholas thought of them. Of those teenagers slinging guns like war veterans, their eyes devoid of any emotion."If they are raised to adulthood like that," he said, "they would be an unstoppable army.""Exactly," Harold replied. "And who wouldn't want control over that unstoppab

  • CHAPTER 132

There were many things that Nicholas had to take in at once.Harold knew that they was there. And he wanted them to join him at his table. And this girl had called him her uncle. It was a lot of unpack. He looked up at the girl, searching for some proof of deceit, but the genuineness in her expression wasn't faked. Whatever Harold was planning, it didn't involve this girl. She probably thought she was inviting her uncle's friends over or something.Nora glanced at Nicholas, silently asking what they should do. Nicholas shrugged and stood up."That's nice of your uncle. Let's go, Nora," he said. The girl beamed."He's right over there," she said, leading the way. They got to the table, and Harold had the nerve to smile at them. As if they were all old friends or something. Nicholas was tempted to tell him how creepy a cheerful expression looked on him."It's good to see you," Harold said. "Nicholas. Nora."Beside him, Nicholas felt Nora shift uncomfortably. How come Harold knew her nam
