Chapter One

"Three years in this damn place. I'm finally going home to my wife and sister." Marcus's lips curled into a faint smile. "I could imagine how happy they'll be to see me."

For three long years, he had been locked inside this prison. Greenville County Jail was one of the worst prisons in the area, filled with dangerous criminals and men with serious criminal records.

Marcus had spent every single one of those three years behind these cold prison walls. Now, after all that time, he was finally going home..

Walking out of those prison gates and stepping into the warm sunlight again, Marcus felt a strange sense of freedom, he was finally breathing fresh air again.

Before he could take another step, a brand-new 2025 Ferrari pulled up right in front of him. Marcus stopped and stared at the expensive car, wondering who could possibly be waiting for him.

The passenger door suddenly opened, and the woman who stepped out was none other than his wife, Genevieve.

The moment Marcus saw her, his face immediately beamed with happiness. After three years of imprisonment, seeing the woman he loved standing there to welcome him home meant more to him than anything else. He had spent countless nights thinking about this moment, imagining her beautiful smile and the way she would run into his arms the second she saw him.

His fingers unconsciously touched the simple ring on his finger, and a faint smile appeared on his face. During those three years, he had encountered someone extraordinary inside those prison walls, an old man who had taken him under his wing and taught him things he never thought possible. Marcus had been looking forward to returning home and surprising Genevieve with everything he had gained during those years.

For a brief moment, Marcus felt like the three years of suffering had been worth it.

But then the man sitting in the driver's seat stepped out, it was Donald Lionel..

Marcus's smile slowly disappeared.

He stared at him in disbelief as he walked around the Ferrari and headed straight toward Genevieve.

she didn't step away. Instead, she willingly moved closer and allowed him to wrap his arm around her waist. She remained comfortably in his embrace, her expression completely calm, as though Marcus wasn't standing there at all..

Marcus stood completely frozen.

He couldn't understand what he was seeing.

This was the same person he had beaten up three years ago after catching him harassing Genevieve. That night, the man had grabbed Genevieve and tried to drag her away while she screamed desperately for Marcus to save her. He arrogantly told Marcus that she would eventually belong to him, leaving Marcus with no choice but to step in and defend his wife. He had lost control and beaten him badly.

That incident was the reason Marcus had spent the last three years behind prison walls.

And now, the same man was standing in front of him, holding his wife like they were lovers. Why were they embracing like this?

Marcus stared at them in disbelief. He looked at Genevieve, then at the man holding her tightly. "Genevieve, what's going on?" His voice was low as he stared at the man. "Is he forcing you to do this?"

Marcus want to believe she was been forced to do this, because the Lionel family could go lower because they didn't waste any minute to throw him behind those walls, and with everything he's ready to defend her..

Genevieve didn't answer. Instead, she remained comfortably in the man's arms, her beautiful face completely calm.

The man smirked and held her even closer. "Still as stupid as ever," he sneered.

"When did you get close?" Marcus added, "If you're been forced I'm here to protect you"

“Are you that dumb”Genevieve stared at him with pure disdain before throwing a brown A4 envelope at his chest. Marcus caught it, still stunned by his wife's reaction to the question he had asked. She had not even bothered to answer him.

"What's this?" he asked.

Genevieve only smirked.

"Are you really that slow? Do I have to tell you what it contains when you can simply open it and see for yourself?" she replied, her tone cold and filled with disgust.

Without saying another word, he opened the envelope and froze when he saw what was inside. There was an A4 white paper already printed with something, along with a pen placed neatly beside it.

The moment Marcus's eyes caught the first line, his hand began to tremble slightly. He quickly tightened his grip and forced himself to remain calm, but his eyes remained fixed on the words in disbelief.

"Divorce papers..." he muttered before slowly raising his head to look at her.

"Exactly what you see there," Genevieve replied as though it meant absolutely nothing.

"You're serving me divorce papers right outside the prison?" Marcus asked, still struggling to hide his disbelief. If someone had told him this was how his first moment outside those prison walls would go, he would never have believed them. For three years, Marcus had held onto one thing. The belief that no matter what happened, his wife still loved him.

"And do you think you're special?" Genevieve scoffed. "Sign those papers and stop making a big deal out of nothing."

Marcus clenched his fists tightly.

"Out of nothing?" he repeated, his voice dropping.

"Yes. I'm asking for a divorce because I found someone else. Someone who loves me and actually deserves me." Genevieve glanced at Donald before continuing coldly. "I'm not going to waste the rest of my life being stuck with an ex-convict like you."

Marcus's face turned red, but he fought desperately to keep his anger under control.

"Baby, you forgot to add one thing," Donald suddenly said with a mocking smile as he moved closer and wrapped an arm around Genevieve. "He's not just an ex-convict. He's a poor and wretched dog."

Genevieve did not even bother correcting him. "Marcus, you're an ex-convict, and I've found a better future for myself. We don't belong in the same world anymore. Do the math and sign those papers," she thundered.

Marcus bit his lower lip as he stared at the woman standing before him.

"I ended up behind those walls because of you. Because of this same man you're standing with right now." His voice trembled with restrained anger. "Even if you wanted to move on, you couldn't find someone else? You had to choose the very man who harassed you and sent your husband to prison?"

Genevieve's expression remained completely indifferent. "There was nothing stopping me from choosing him," she said coldly. "You went to prison because of your own stupidity. I never asked you to fight for me, did I?"

Marcus went completely silent.

Those words hurt more than anything she had said before.

He had spent three years believing he had sacrificed everything for the woman he loved.

Now, standing outside the prison gates, he finally realized that she had never considered his sacrifice worth anything at all.
