The rain had thickened into a steady drumming by the time Ethan reached Skyline One.
He did not go upstairs. He stood in the underground garage next to the black car with his phone in his hand and the photograph still glowing on the screen. Daniel stood two steps away with his face drawn and pale. Neither of them spoke for a long time. "They took her from her apartment," Daniel said finally. "Two hours ago. The doorman saw four men in a gray van. He thought they were movers." "She was working late on the ledgers," Ethan said. His voice was very flat. "She told me she would take them home tonight and check the old payments against the Pillars' names." "It is my fault, sir. I should have put a guard on her door." "It is mine." Ethan closed the phone. "I told her to dig. I did not ask how much danger she was in." A soft blue light opened in the air above the hood of the car. [Mission: Rescue Grace Tan.] [Time limit: Eleven hours, forty-two minutes.] [Reward: Intelligence Network, level two.] [Failure: Death of Grace Tan.] He looked at the words with grim calm. Then he picked up the black disk that Daniel had taken from under the car and left in the glove compartment. The tiny red light blinked on and off. "They are listening," he said quietly. Daniel nodded. Ethan lifted the disk to his lips and spoke in an even voice. "I will bring the ring and the pendant to Pier Fourteen at dawn, as instructed. I will come alone. I understand that if I bring anyone, Mrs. Tan will die. Please do not harm her." He lowered the disk. Daniel stared at him in horror. "Mr. Cross, you cannot go alone." "I am not going alone." Ethan set the disk back in the glove box. "But they must believe I am. Daniel, call Victor Whitmore. Tell him I need every guard he can borrow from the Whitmore security team. Quiet men. No uniforms. Ask him to meet us at the pier at three in the morning, two hours before the exchange." "Victor?" Daniel blinked. "Mr. Cross, he is a Whitmore." "He is a man who wants to make something right." Ethan opened the car door. "He will come." "And the ring? The pendant?" "The pendant stays on me. It always does." Ethan took the bronze ring from his pocket and turned it over in his fingers. It was warm. He slid it onto his right forefinger. It fit perfectly, as if it had been made for him. "The ring, too." The System chimed. [Seal resonance: 41 percent.] [Alert: Host strength rising.] Ethan closed his hand and felt a slow, powerful warmth run through his fingers and up his arm. It was like a second heartbeat. He had not noticed until now how the ring changed him. His senses were sharper. His body felt lighter. His eyes saw more detail in the dim garage than they had an hour ago. "What is it, Mr. Cross?" Daniel whispered. "The ring is not only a key," Ethan said slowly. "It is a weapon." He got into the car and shut the door. Daniel started the engine but did not pull out. He sat gripping the wheel with both hands, staring through the windshield at the wet concrete wall. "Mr. Cross, I have the list you asked for. Of the people who touched the car." "Tell me." "Three names. A garage attendant called Peter, who has worked at Skyline One for six years. A driver from the Cross Holdings pool named Marcus, who joined us the day after the Black Tiger affair. And a woman from the building management office who handed me the keys on the first morning." He swallowed. "I have known none of them well. I cannot say which one it is. Maybe none of them." "Maybe all of them are innocent," Ethan said. "Maybe the tracker was put on at Harbor Nine, while the car waited in the parking lot." "Then how will we know?" "We will not. Not yet." Ethan looked out the window. "That is why I am telling the tracker the wrong story. If the Pillars act on it, we will learn something. If they do not, we will learn something else." Daniel nodded slowly. Then, quietly, he said, "Mr. Cross. Whatever happens tonight. Thank you for trusting me." Ethan looked at him for a long moment. The young man's jaw was tight and his eyes were fixed straight ahead. "I trust few people," Ethan said. "You are one of them. Drive." Daniel's shoulders relaxed. He put the car in gear and rolled out of the garage into the pouring night. At two forty in the morning, Pier Fourteen lay dark and silent beneath the heavy rain. It was an old shipyard on the far south of the harbor. Rusted cranes stood against the sky like the bones of great animals. Rows of broken containers formed long alleys of black metal. A single yellow light burned on a pole at the end of the main dock. The black water slapped against the pilings with a low, hungry sound. Ethan stood beside a stack of containers with his collar turned up against the rain. Victor stood next to him, pale and wet, with an old black raincoat over his suit. Behind them, in the shadows between two containers, eight men in dark clothes waited motionless. Whitmore security. Quiet and calm, and very afraid. "I did not think I would ever do this," Victor whispered. "Stand in the dark with a gun for a man I hated." "Do you still hate me?" Victor was quiet for several seconds. "I do not know what I feel." "That is honest." "It is the only thing I have left." Victor swallowed. "What is the plan?" "You and the guards stay here, hidden. Wait for my signal. When I raise my right hand, go to the north side of the pier and cut off the road. No one leaves. If I do not raise my hand in twenty minutes, take Mrs. Tan's body and go home." Victor flinched. "Do not say that." "I am saying it so that you will be ready." Victor looked at him. His jaw trembled. Then he nodded once and pulled his coat tighter around his shoulders. Ethan slipped out from behind the containers. He walked slowly down the central dock toward the yellow light, his hands open at his sides, the rain beating on his shoulders. The old planks creaked under his feet. Far out on the black water, a foghorn moaned once and went silent. At the end of the pier, an old warehouse squatted against the sky. A single door stood half open with a faint light inside. He heard no sound. He pushed the door open and stepped through. The warehouse was huge and empty. Rusted machinery lined the walls. A pale light fell from a high broken skylight onto a cleared space in the middle of the floor. Mrs. Tan sat in a wooden chair in the center of the light, bound and gagged exactly as the photograph had shown her. Her eyes found him at once. They were red with tears and wide with fear, but she did not look away. Ethan took one step forward. "That is far enough," a voice said from the shadows. A man stepped out of the dark and stood beside the chair. He was tall and lean, wearing a long black coat soaked with rain. His face was pale, his hair short and gray at the temples. A thin scar ran down one side of his jaw. He carried no weapon in his hands. He did not need to. The System flashed red in Ethan's vision. [Target: Ghost. Captain of the Shadow Guard.] [Combat rating: Extreme.] [Warning: Equal to host at full War God power.] "Mr. Cross," Ghost said. His voice was soft and quiet, the voice of a man who had rarely needed to raise it. "You came. I am glad. I do not like to see people die for no reason." "Let her go." "In a moment. First, the ring. The pendant." "I will give them to you when she is safe." "I think not." A thin smile touched the corner of Ghost's mouth. "You have brought men with you. Eight, hiding behind the containers on the south side. They are Whitmore, I think. They carry pistols and fear." He tilted his head. "Do not worry. My men will not hurt them if they stay where they are." Ethan's face did not change. But his heart gave a slow hard beat. Ghost had known. Of course he had known. "You are better than I expected," Ethan said. "I am better than anyone you have ever met." Ghost stepped away from the chair. He moved slowly, without hurry. His boots made no sound on the concrete. "Which is why I am going to ask you one more time. Give me the ring and the pendant and walk away. You have lived a short, strange week. It would be a pity to end it here." "No." Ghost sighed gently, like a man who had expected the answer. "Then I am sorry," he said. He moved.Latest Chapter

The thirty-first of October dawned gray and quiet.Ethan woke early in the white bedroom on the sixtieth floor of Skyline One. The city lay hushed beneath a low sky. A thin mist clung to the glass towers like breath. He lay on his back for a few minutes without moving, listening to the silence. His ribs no longer hurt. The System had healed him during the night, as it always did. He felt strong, rested, and calm.Today was the day.He rose and showered and dressed slowly. For a long time he stood in front of the closet and looked at the garment bag hanging at the far end. The old gray one from Marquis & Daughters. He unzipped it and lifted out the midnight suit. The cloth was soft and heavy against his hands. Each button was polished bone. He put on the white shirt first, then the trousers, then the long jacket. He fastened the buttons one by one. When he looked into the mirror, a tall man stood there in a suit that fit him as if it had been made for him. His shoulders were broad. His

Ghost came across the floor like a thrown knife. There was no warning. He was ten steps away, and then he was not. Ethan barely had time to throw up his forearm. The blow struck it like a hammer, and a shock of pain ran through his bones. He stumbled backward. A second strike came at his ribs. A third at his throat. Each one was perfectly aimed, perfectly timed.[War God Template: Full power. Duration: Ten minutes.]The world slowed down.Ethan caught the third strike on his palm and turned it aside. Ghost's fist slid past his cheek. Ethan drove his own fist toward the other man's stomach. Ghost twisted and let it pass, so close that the cloth of his coat tore. His elbow rose in a quick sharp arc toward Ethan's jaw. Ethan ducked. Their bodies spun apart. For a single breath they stood facing each other across three steps of wet concrete. Rain fell through the broken skylight between them."Impressive," Ghost said. A small bead of blood ran from the corner of his lip where Ethan's knuc

The roof of the Hawthorne Hotel was cold and windy.Ethan stepped out through the service door into the dark. The party was still going on far below, and the sound of music drifted up like an echo from another world. A thin rain had begun. He did not mind. Water ran down the back of his collar and made him feel awake.Isabella Hawthorne stood at the edge of the roof with her arms wrapped around herself. The green gown clung wet to her shoulders. Her black hair had come loose from its pins. She turned when she heard his footsteps, and for a moment her cool, controlled face looked almost fragile."You came," she said."You left a note in my coat pocket.""I was afraid you would not read it.""I read everything." He stopped about five steps away from her. "You asked me to meet you alone. I did. Now tell me what you want."She looked at him for a long moment. The wind pulled at her hair. "I want to stop being my father's daughter."Ethan said nothing."My family has served the Dragon Cour

The auctioneer was a small man with a very loud voice. He stood at the podium under the golden light and tapped his gavel twice. "Ladies and gentlemen, the proceeds of tonight's sale will support the Hawthorne Children's Foundation. Please be generous. Lot One, a Tang dynasty jade horse, starting at fifty thousand dollars."The bidding began. Paddles rose and fell like white birds. A woman in silver bought the jade horse for two hundred thousand. A bronze mirror went to a banker for three hundred. A silk screen of cranes sold for half a million. Applause followed each sale in polite waves. Waiters passed through the rows with trays of champagne.Ethan sat in the third row near the aisle with his hands resting on his knees. Daniel sat behind him. Across the room, on the far side of the stage, Julian Sterling lounged in a velvet chair with one leg crossed over the other. He sipped from his glass and smiled gently at nothing in particular. Every few minutes his eyes drifted toward Ethan,

The Hawthorne Hotel glittered like a jewel box.Ethan stepped out of the black car in front of the great glass doors and paused to straighten his cuffs. A long red carpet ran across the front steps. Photographers lined both sides, their cameras clicking in rapid bursts. Men in tuxedos and women in long gowns passed in and out of the golden light. Valets hurried between the cars. Somewhere behind the doors, a string quartet played something slow and elegant. He wore the black suit with a white shirt and no tie. The jade pendant hung hidden under his collar. In his inner pocket, the iron key and the black notebook pressed softly against his ribs.Daniel followed half a step behind. "Mr. Cross, I still think this is a trap.""Yes," Ethan said. "It is.""Then why...""Because the best way to see how a spider builds its web is to walk into it." He stepped onto the carpet. The flashbulbs exploded. A dozen reporters shouted at once. "Mr. Cross! Mr. Cross! Are the rumors true about the river
