The lawyer's office smelled of old paper and strong coffee.
Ethan sat on one side of the long wooden table. The chair was hard. The room was quiet except for the soft sound of the air conditioner. A clock on the wall ticked slowly. Vanessa sat on the other side with her arms crossed. Between them lay a thick stack of divorce papers ready for signatures. A black pen rested on top of the papers.
The lawyer, a thin man with thick glasses, cleared his throat. He looked uncomfortable. "Both parties are present today. We can begin the final signing process. Everything is prepared."
Vanessa's face was still pale from the morning meeting. She had changed into a dark gray dress. Her hair was pulled back. Her hands rested on the table with fingers tight and white. She did not look at Ethan at first. When she did, her eyes were cold.
"I want nothing from him," she said in a hard voice. "No money. No property. No shares. Just his signature and he is out of my life forever. That is all I need."
Ethan looked at her across the table. His face showed nothing. "You still think I want something from you?"
"Do not play games with me," Vanessa snapped. Her voice rose a little. "Sign the papers and disappear from my world. I do not want to see your face again. I do not want to hear your name. Just sign and leave."
The lawyer shifted in his seat. He looked down at his notes.
Ethan did not reach for the pen. Instead, he opened a thin black folder and pushed it across the table toward her. The folder stopped near her hands.
"Read this first."
Vanessa frowned deep. She looked at the folder like it might bite her. Then she opened it with angry hands. Her eyes moved down the pages line by line. At first her face stayed hard. Then it began to change. Her eyes grew wider. Her lips pressed together. Her hands started to shake a little.
"What is this supposed to be?" she asked. Her voice was smaller now.
"Proof," Ethan said in a calm voice. "Damien Kane's company is already bankrupt. He has secret debts of over eighty million dollars. The banks will take everything he owns in less than a week. His partners are already looking for ways to leave him."
Vanessa's hands shook harder. She turned another page. Numbers filled the paper. Bank letters. Debt notices. Partner emails. All of it real.
"You are lying," she said. "This is fake. Damien is rich. His family is powerful. He would never let this happen."
"Check the numbers yourself," Ethan said. "Call the banks. Call his business partners. Call anyone you trust. They will all confirm every word on those pages. I did not invent this. I only bought what was already there."
The lawyer looked uncomfortable in his chair. He took off his glasses and wiped them. "Miss Whitmore, if these documents are real, then the situation is very serious. I would advise you to verify them before making any further decisions."
Vanessa stood up so fast her chair fell backward and hit the floor with a loud sound. The lawyer jumped. "Damien is rich! His family is powerful! This has to be fake! You planned this! You somehow ruined him on purpose!"
Ethan stayed seated and calm. He did not raise his voice. "Three days ago, Damien looked strong and untouchable. Today he is finished. You chose the wrong man to stand beside. That is not my fault. That is yours."
Vanessa's eyes filled with a mix of anger and fear. Her breath came fast. "You planned this from the start. You somehow ruined him! You made him fall so you could laugh at me!"
"I only showed the truth that was already there," Ethan said. "The debts were already real. The partners were already leaving. I simply bought the loans. Now the banks answer to me. Damien has until five o'clock today to pay eighty million dollars. He will not find the money."
Silence filled the office like a heavy blanket. The clock on the wall kept ticking. Vanessa stood with her hands closed into fists. Her eyes moved from the papers to Ethan's face and back again.
She looked at the divorce papers on the table. Her voice became quiet and broken. "If I sign this... what happens to me?"
"You become free," Ethan said. "And alone."
She stared at him for a long time. Her eyes searched his face for any sign of the man she used to know. The quiet son-in-law who cleaned floors and took insults. The man who used to look at her with hope. She found nothing of that man. Only cold eyes and a steady face.
Then she picked up the pen. Her hand shook as she signed her name with hard, angry strokes. The pen pressed deep into the paper.
Ethan signed his name below hers without hesitation. His hand was steady.
The lawyer stamped the papers with a loud sound. He checked the signatures twice. "The divorce is final and legal as of this moment. Both parties are free. Copies will be sent to both of you."
Vanessa grabbed her bag from the floor. She stood near the door for a second. At the last moment she turned back. Her eyes were wet, but her voice stayed cold.
"You think you won today. You think this is the end. One day you will fall harder than anyone has ever fallen. I will make sure of it."
Ethan watched her leave without standing up. The door closed behind her. The sound of her heels faded down the hallway.
He looked at the empty doorway and spoke in a low voice. "You chose him. Now watch him fall."
The system screen appeared in the quiet office.
[Divorce completed.]
[Emotional chain broken.]
[New path unlocked.]
Ethan stood and buttoned his jacket with calm hands. He picked up his copy of the divorce papers and folded them once. He put them in his pocket next to the black card.
The lawyer watched him with careful eyes. "Mr. Cross, if you need any further legal help..."
"Not today," Ethan said.
He walked out of the office into the afternoon light. The city moved around him as if nothing had changed. Cars passed. People walked. The sun sat high in the sky.
But everything had changed.
Outside the office, the city waited for him.
And so did Damien Kane.

Chapter 26
The thirty-first of October dawned gray and quiet.Ethan woke early in the white bedroom on the sixtieth floor of Skyline One. The city lay hushed beneath a low sky. A thin mist clung to the glass towers like breath. He lay on his back for a few minutes without moving, listening to the silence. His ribs no longer hurt. The System had healed him during the night, as it always did. He felt strong, rested, and calm.Today was the day.He rose and showered and dressed slowly. For a long time he stood in front of the closet and looked at the garment bag hanging at the far end. The old gray one from Marquis & Daughters. He unzipped it and lifted out the midnight suit. The cloth was soft and heavy against his hands. Each button was polished bone. He put on the white shirt first, then the trousers, then the long jacket. He fastened the buttons one by one. When he looked into the mirror, a tall man stood there in a suit that fit him as if it had been made for him. His shoulders were broad. His

Ghost came across the floor like a thrown knife. There was no warning. He was ten steps away, and then he was not. Ethan barely had time to throw up his forearm. The blow struck it like a hammer, and a shock of pain ran through his bones. He stumbled backward. A second strike came at his ribs. A third at his throat. Each one was perfectly aimed, perfectly timed.[War God Template: Full power. Duration: Ten minutes.]The world slowed down.Ethan caught the third strike on his palm and turned it aside. Ghost's fist slid past his cheek. Ethan drove his own fist toward the other man's stomach. Ghost twisted and let it pass, so close that the cloth of his coat tore. His elbow rose in a quick sharp arc toward Ethan's jaw. Ethan ducked. Their bodies spun apart. For a single breath they stood facing each other across three steps of wet concrete. Rain fell through the broken skylight between them."Impressive," Ghost said. A small bead of blood ran from the corner of his lip where Ethan's knuc
Chapter 24
The rain had thickened into a steady drumming by the time Ethan reached Skyline One.He did not go upstairs. He stood in the underground garage next to the black car with his phone in his hand and the photograph still glowing on the screen. Daniel stood two steps away with his face drawn and pale. Neither of them spoke for a long time."They took her from her apartment," Daniel said finally. "Two hours ago. The doorman saw four men in a gray van. He thought they were movers.""She was working late on the ledgers," Ethan said. His voice was very flat. "She told me she would take them home tonight and check the old payments against the Pillars' names.""It is my fault, sir. I should have put a guard on her door.""It is mine." Ethan closed the phone. "I told her to dig. I did not ask how much danger she was in."A soft blue light opened in the air above the hood of the car.[Mission: Rescue Grace Tan.][Time limit: Eleven hours, forty-two minutes.][Reward: Intelligence Network, level t
Chapter 23
The roof of the Hawthorne Hotel was cold and windy.Ethan stepped out through the service door into the dark. The party was still going on far below, and the sound of music drifted up like an echo from another world. A thin rain had begun. He did not mind. Water ran down the back of his collar and made him feel awake.Isabella Hawthorne stood at the edge of the roof with her arms wrapped around herself. The green gown clung wet to her shoulders. Her black hair had come loose from its pins. She turned when she heard his footsteps, and for a moment her cool, controlled face looked almost fragile."You came," she said."You left a note in my coat pocket.""I was afraid you would not read it.""I read everything." He stopped about five steps away from her. "You asked me to meet you alone. I did. Now tell me what you want."She looked at him for a long moment. The wind pulled at her hair. "I want to stop being my father's daughter."Ethan said nothing."My family has served the Dragon Cour
Chapter 22
The auctioneer was a small man with a very loud voice. He stood at the podium under the golden light and tapped his gavel twice. "Ladies and gentlemen, the proceeds of tonight's sale will support the Hawthorne Children's Foundation. Please be generous. Lot One, a Tang dynasty jade horse, starting at fifty thousand dollars."The bidding began. Paddles rose and fell like white birds. A woman in silver bought the jade horse for two hundred thousand. A bronze mirror went to a banker for three hundred. A silk screen of cranes sold for half a million. Applause followed each sale in polite waves. Waiters passed through the rows with trays of champagne.Ethan sat in the third row near the aisle with his hands resting on his knees. Daniel sat behind him. Across the room, on the far side of the stage, Julian Sterling lounged in a velvet chair with one leg crossed over the other. He sipped from his glass and smiled gently at nothing in particular. Every few minutes his eyes drifted toward Ethan,
Chapter 21
The Hawthorne Hotel glittered like a jewel box.Ethan stepped out of the black car in front of the great glass doors and paused to straighten his cuffs. A long red carpet ran across the front steps. Photographers lined both sides, their cameras clicking in rapid bursts. Men in tuxedos and women in long gowns passed in and out of the golden light. Valets hurried between the cars. Somewhere behind the doors, a string quartet played something slow and elegant. He wore the black suit with a white shirt and no tie. The jade pendant hung hidden under his collar. In his inner pocket, the iron key and the black notebook pressed softly against his ribs.Daniel followed half a step behind. "Mr. Cross, I still think this is a trap.""Yes," Ethan said. "It is.""Then why...""Because the best way to see how a spider builds its web is to walk into it." He stepped onto the carpet. The flashbulbs exploded. A dozen reporters shouted at once. "Mr. Cross! Mr. Cross! Are the rumors true about the river
