The morning briefing room smelled of fresh coffee and dry-cleaned suits. Twenty department heads sat around the long glass table, tablets open, pens ready. Sunlight poured through the floor-to-ceiling windows and painted bright squares on the pale gray carpet.
Vivian sat at the head of the table in a cream-colored blazer, her lipstick fresh, her hair pulled back into a low bun. Lucas sat directly to her right, exactly where Alex used to sit for the past three years.
Alex walked in at eight thirty on the dot, wearing the same black suit from the banquet, his tie perfectly straight. He carried a slim leather folder under his arm.
"Ah, look who decided to grace us with his presence," Vivian said, not bothering to hide her smile. "You're two minutes late, Alex. I hope you're not still sulking about last night."
A few polite laughs rippled around the table. Lucas smirked into his coffee.
"Good morning, Vivian." Alex's voice was flat and even.
He walked past the empty chair on Vivian's left and stopped directly in front of her. The room went quiet as he set the leather folder down on the table and slid it toward her with two fingers.
"Sign here." Alex tapped the folder once. "Let's make a clean break."
Vivian tilted her head, one eyebrow arching in that way she used when she thought she was being charming.
"Alex, what is this? A performance? Are we doing theater now?"
She flipped the folder open with a lazy flick of her nails.
The room stayed silent. Somebody at the far end of the table quietly closed their laptop.
Vivian's eyes moved across the first page. Her smile flickered for a heartbeat, then returned, wider than before.
"A resignation letter?" She laughed, the sound sharp and light. "Oh, sweetheart. You really are throwing a tantrum."
She flipped to the second document. Her smile stayed frozen for a moment longer than it should have.
"And divorce papers." Her tone dropped into something amused and pitying, the way a mother speaks to a child who has spilled juice on the carpet. "Alex, honey, this is embarrassing. In front of the whole department? Really?"
"Sign them, Vivian." Alex kept his hands folded behind his back, his shoulders relaxed, his expression completely blank.
Vivian let out a long sigh and leaned back in her leather chair. She looked at him the way a bored cat looks at a mouse that has stopped moving.
"Do you hear yourself right now?" Her voice was silk over broken glass. "Do you have any idea what you sound like? A grown man walking into a boardroom with a paper tantrum because his wife didn't give him a candy bar last night."
Rebecca in marketing lowered her eyes. Two junior managers pretended to check their phones.
"You are a leech, Alex." Vivian tapped the folder with one manicured finger. "A house rat that got fat off my grain. And now you want to bite the hand that fed you?"
Alex said nothing. His face remained smooth, unreadable, patient.
"Where do you think you're going to go?" Vivian's laugh came again, but this time it had teeth. "You want to walk out that door and do what? Deliver food? Drive a taxi? You've been drinking my wine and sleeping in my bed for three years. Without me, you're a stray dog looking for scraps."
Lucas snickered behind his hand.
"Sign, Vivian." Alex's voice never changed pitch.
"I will not sign anything." She pushed the folder away with the back of her hand, the way one might push away a plate of spoiled food. "Come back when you've cooled off. Wash your face. Take a walk. And when you're ready to apologize like an adult, I might consider forgetting this little episode ever happened."
She turned to Lucas and waved the folder toward him without looking.
"Lucas, deal with this. File it somewhere. Or shred it. I don't care."
Lucas caught the folder mid-air with an eager grin. "Of course, ma'am. I'll take care of it right away."
His eyes flicked to Alex, and something ugly gleamed in them. Alex saw it. He noted it the way a man notes the position of a wasp in a room, calmly, without alarm.
He's going to hide the divorce papers, Alex thought. He wants Vivian to keep believing I'm still her husband. Fine. Let him bury it.
"Meeting's over for you, Alex." Vivian waved a dismissive hand toward the door without looking at him. "Go home. Take a nap. And for God's sake, take that pathetic face somewhere I don't have to look at it."
Alex bowed his head slightly, the gesture almost graceful.
"Goodbye, Vivian."
He turned on his heel and walked out of the room without another word. The click of the glass door behind him was the loudest sound in the building.
The elevator ride down was silent. Alex watched the floor numbers drop, one by one, from twenty-two to the ground level. His reflection stared back at him from the polished steel doors, and for the first time in three years, the man in the reflection looked awake.
Rat. Leech. Stray dog.
He rolled the words around in his mind, turning them over like coins. They didn't sting anymore. They didn't even bruise. They only sharpened his focus.
The lobby doors slid open, and the cool morning air of the city hit his face. Alex stepped onto the sidewalk and stopped.
A long black sedan waited at the curb. Not a company car. Not a taxi. This one had the kind of polished elegance that whispered old money in every curve of its body.
A tall man in a charcoal three-piece suit stood beside the rear door, his silver hair combed back, his gloved hands folded in front of him. His face was calm and lined with years of quiet discipline.
"Young Master Alex." The man's voice was low and warm, tinted with the faintest touch of an old accent. "It has been a long time."
Alex looked at him for a long moment before speaking.
"Ansel."
"Yes, sir."
"You waited."
"Eight years, three months, and eleven days, sir." Ansel bowed slightly at the waist. "Your grandfather's instructions were very clear. I was to remain in position until you made the choice yourself."
Alex glanced back once at the Vivian Fashion building rising behind him, its glass facade reflecting the morning sun. Then he turned toward Ansel and gave a small nod.
"Let's go somewhere quiet."
Ansel opened the rear door, and Alex slid into the leather seat. The interior smelled of cedar and old paper. A single manila envelope rested on the center console.
The sedan pulled smoothly into traffic. Ansel sat in the front passenger seat and half-turned so he could speak clearly.
"Sir, before I go further, I must lay out the terms of your inheritance."
"Go ahead."
"The Morgan family estate will not pass to you directly." Ansel's voice remained calm and precise. "Your grandfather designed a trial. You are to begin with one million dollars in seed capital and full ownership of the top floor of Crown Center, free and clear. Within twelve months, you must build a company from nothing and reach a valuation of ten million dollars."
Alex looked out the tinted window at the passing streets. "And if I fail?"
"Then the estate remains locked in trust, and you will continue as an ordinary man. Milestones will unlock further assets progressively. Luxury vehicles first, then residences, and eventually control of subsidiary companies."
Alex was quiet for a moment.
"Two conditions, Ansel."
"Sir."
"Complete anonymity. Nobody outside the family circle learns my true identity."
"Understood."
"And no advisory team. I want to build this alone. No consultants, no handlers, no whisper networks feeding me answers. If I win, I win with my own hands."
Ansel's eyes crinkled faintly at the corners. If Alex hadn't known him for twenty years, he might have missed the flicker of pride.
"Your grandfather would have approved, sir."
Alex reached for the manila envelope on the console and pulled out a single document. A property deed, thick as a business card, printed on cream-colored paper with an embossed seal in the corner.
The name on the deed was his own.
Ansel adjusted his gloves and spoke with quiet formality.
"Tomorrow at ten in the morning, sir, please inspect your penthouse. That floor is registered under your name."

The next morning, the penthouse was so empty that every footstep came back as an echo.Alex stood in the middle of the pale oak floor with his hands in his pockets. There was no desk, no chair, no staff, and no client list. There was only the wide glass wall and the city waiting behind it.The elevator chimed softly. Ansel stepped out in his charcoal suit, carrying a small black envelope in both hands, as though it held something fragile."Good morning, Young Master." Ansel gave a slight bow. "I hope the penthouse suits you.""It suits me fine, Ansel. It just has nothing in it yet.""That is the point of a trial, sir." Ansel's mouth moved in the smallest smile. "Your grandfather believed a man learns the most when he starts with an empty room."He held out the envelope. Alex took it and slid out a thick card of cream paper with a gold border. The words on it were printed in neat, formal letters.Stage One: Reach one million dollars in gross merchandise value within the first month."O
Chapter 6: Crushing Presence
The elevator to the top floor restaurant rose so smoothly that Kris felt nothing except the quiet weight in her chest.Thomas stood beside her, straightening his silver watch for the third time. He had followed her all the way from the second floor, talking the entire time, and she had stopped listening somewhere around the lobby."I'm only saying, you should be more grateful," he told her, smiling at his own reflection in the brass doors. "Do you know how many tenants beg Mr. Dunn for a single day? And I got you three, just by walking in.""Thomas, I never asked you to come to this dinner," Kris answered, her voice thin and tired."A woman like you should not walk into a place like this alone." He gave her a soft, patient look, the kind people use on children. "Besides, I want to meet this friend of yours. I want to make sure he is not wasting your time."Kris did not reply. Her fingers held the white business card so tightly that the corner had turned soft and damp. The doors opened
Chapter 5: Begging for Favors
Thomas walked through the Crown Center lobby with his chest pushed out like a rooster on a fence post.Kris followed half a step behind him, holding a thin folder of lease papers against her stomach. The lobby was louder than usual. Workers stood in small groups, whispering and glancing toward the private elevator at the far end."Did you see that?" Thomas leaned toward her, his voice full of pride. "Something big is going on today. Good thing I know the supervisor. When the right person asks, doors open.""Thomas, I only need a few days," Kris answered, her voice low and tired. "Seven days to move my stock. That is all.""Seven days is nothing for a man like Mr. Dunn." Thomas gave her a grin that was a little too bright. "Leave the talking to me. Just stand there and look sad."Kris pressed her lips together. She did not feel sad. She felt like a person standing at the edge of a cliff, being told to admire the view. The supervisor's office was on the second floor, behind a frosted gl
Chapter 4: The Untouchable Crown Center
The lobby of Crown Center was so bright and so clean that even the air seemed to be charging rent.Alex stood near the security desk at ten o'clock sharp, holding the cream colored deed in one hand. Behind him, a group of tenants waited for the elevators, talking loudly about the one thing every person in the building loved to talk about."You know the rule, right?" a man in a pinstripe suit told his coworker. "Crown Center is lease only. Never for sale. Not a floor, not a room, not even a parking spot.""Everyone knows that," the coworker answered with a proud little laugh. "Billionaires have tried to buy the top floor for ten years. The owners won't even answer their emails.""That's why we pay what we pay," the man went on, straightening his tie. "This place is untouchable."Alex listened without a word, his face calm and blank. He felt a quiet, dry amusement rising in his chest, the kind a person feels when he hears strangers argue about a house he already owns.A young receptioni
Chapter 3: The Secondhand Truck & Kris's Struggle
The man who owned a one billion dollar family fortune was being told to leave a used car lot because he looked too poor to breathe the air."Sir, the pickups are on the far side, behind the fence," the dealer told him, looking at Alex's plain gray jacket and old shoes. "The cars up front are for customers who can actually pay."His name tag read Dale. He had gelled hair, a loud tie, and the smile of a man who had already decided how much money was in your pocket.Alex looked at the rows of trucks near the back. "I'm here to buy one of those. The blue one with the long bed.""That one is eighteen thousand." Dale laughed through his nose. "Eighteen thousand real dollars, not the kind you get from sweeping floors."His face crinkled with open pity. His eyes moved over Alex's jacket again, slowly, as if he were checking a stray dog for fleas."I'm serious," Alex told him, his voice calm and even."I'm sure you are." Dale stepped closer and lowered his voice, as if he were doing Alex a fav
