Chapter 3

Adrian looked at the signed divorce papers one more time and slammed them onto the bed.

Tears escaped his eyes, not the kind born from the pain of losing the woman he loved, but tears of realization. Tears of being used. Tears of being looked down on.

Ten years ago, he had saved a girl from her abusive fiancé. The man had been forcing her into marriage, even after she had broken up with him a thousand times.

He constantly sent her threatening messages. He was rushing for a surgery in the hospital he was working at when he, saw her being beaten in public and without hesitation, he stepped in and saved her making him lose his job.

She had appreciated him with marriage. What she didn’t know was that Adrian had been watching her for a while. Marrying her felt like a dream come true.

But it was all a facade.

He had married a pretender.

That woman was none other than Ariel Eugene, the third daughter of the Eugene family, one of the most influential families in San Francisco.

He had done everything for her. He had sacrificed his total self for her. And how did she repay him? With betrayal.

Her family never accepted him. They hated him and called him useless.

Now, staring at the divorce papers, a chilling smirk appeared on his face. He was finally free from the shackles of that marriage.

It was time to move on and prove them wrong in every possible way.

He walked out of the hospital room and stepped into the hallway.

He didn’t have any destination in mind. Ten years ago, he had no friends. And even now, he still didn’t have any.

All he had were people trying to kill him for reasons he still didn’t understand.

He staggered along the hallway, passing by doctors and patients. They all stared at him in surprise, not because they knew who he was, but because of his appearance.

He looked like a madman.

Unaware of how he looked, he caught his reflection in a mirror hanging on the hallway wall and he froze.

His hair was overgrown, and his beard was tangled. Ariel had never truly taken care of him. To her, he was just an asset, a tool she could squeeze money from at will just like she had always done ten years back.

The loud cry of a woman interrupted his thoughts and drew his attention.

She was rolling on the floor, screaming in agony.

“No! Doctor, please save my daughter!”

Adrian wanted to ignore her. But something, some kind of force held him back. He couldn’t shake it off.

He was a doctor. He had seen people die. He had seen loved ones cry. But this was different. And he didn’t know why.

Curiosity, mixed with awkward hesitation, led him into the hospital room.

There, on the bed, lay a patient completely covered in a white hospital sheet. A sign of death.

But no, he could hear something. A heartbeat. Faint, but present.

He glanced at the monitor. Everything read zero. According to the machine, she was gone.

But he knew she wasn’t. This wasn’t instinct, it was that new, strange ability. The one he’d discovered after waking up. Still unfamiliar. Still abnormal. But real.

He listened closely.

The sheet covered her completely, yet he could see through it into her flesh, her organs. Her heart was still beating. Barely. She was in critical condition.

Then he saw it, traces of a toxic substance in her bloodstream.

She had been poisoned.

He turned to the nearest doctor. “She’s not dead. Her heartbeat is just too faint for the monitor to read.”

The room went silent. Even the crying mother stopped, wiping her tears and staring at the disheveled stranger.

He didn’t blame them. He looked unkept at the moment.

“And who the hell are you?” the head doctor snapped.

“That doesn’t matter,” Adrian replied calmly. “She was poisoned with toxic lead acid. It’s already in her bloodstream. If it reaches her heart, she’s gone. We have to act now.”

The doctor scanned him from head to toe, eyes filled with disdain. “Are you saying we don’t know what we’re doing?”

“I’m saying you haven’t looked closely enough. We don’t have time for arguments. She can still be saved. Get the defibrillator now.”

Adrian reached for a pair of gloves, moving with precision. Every action showed he knew what he was doing.

“And why should we listen to you?” the doctor scoffed.

“Because you have nothing to lose,” Adrian said firmly. “You’ve already declared her dead. If I’m wrong, you’re still in the clear. But if I’m right imagine the headlines and promotion that awaits you.”

That made the doctor pause.

A nurse reluctantly wheeled in the defibrillator and stood beside the bed.

Adrian removed the sheet and was met with a pale but beautiful face.

He adjusted the frequency to its highest setting.

“What?! That’s dangerous to the human body!” the doctor exclaimed.

“It’s strong enough to awaken her heart,” Adrian replied.

“Please... do whatever it takes to save my daughter,” the woman whispered, her voice thick with tears.

Adrian inhaled deeply. He still didn’t fully trust this new ability. But he couldn’t walk away.

He placed the paddles on the patient’s chest. Her body jolted violently.

But nothing happened

Whispers filled the room. Disappointment. Doubt.

“Please… don’t fail me,” he whispered to himself.

He placed the paddles again.

Another shock. Another jolt.

Still nothing.

The head doctor stormed toward him. “Stop this nonsense right now! Do you even know whose daughter this is? Do you realize who you just offended by mocking the dead with your insane instinct?!”

Adrian opened his mouth to reply, but a sudden beeping sound cut him off.

The monitor.

It was picking up her vitals again.

The room froze.

The doctors stared at the monitor in disbelief. Adrian exhaled in relief.

He turned to the furious doctor. “What were you saying again?”

A smirk appeared on his face. Was this strange gift truly a blessing? Or something with a deeper cost?

The doctors rushed to the patient, quickly inserting a cannula and stabilizing her.

Her mother ran up to Adrian and dropped to her knees. “Who are you?”

“I’m nobody,” he replied softly. “It doesn’t matter.”

Her tear-streaked face lit up with a grateful smile. “What do you want, Mr. Nobody?” she asked, a hint of humor in her voice.

“Nothing, ma’am. I just did what felt right.”

“Well... at least take this,” she said, handing him a sleek business card and a platinum hotel card. “My hotel is the biggest in America.”

Adrian hesitated but accepted it politely.

“That card in your hand,” she said with a firm yet elegant voice, “is worth over a billion dollars. Only two people in the world own one and now, you're the third.”

Adrian blinked, stunned. Slowly, he turned his attention to the business card.

And what he saw nearly made him drop it.

"Madam Graciela Vaughn!"

His eyes widened.

He had heard of her. Everyone in the upper world had.

Graciela Vaughn is the richest woman in America. The godmother of business. The queenmaker. Under her, titans of industries were raised. Billionaires bowed at her feet. Men of substance were said to come from her very shadow. She didn’t just have influence she built empires and can destroy them with a whisper.

And the girl he just saved?

Her only daughter.

Adrian’s fingers tightened slightly around the platinum card. He had walked into that room a nobody, dirty, forgotten, mocked.

Now, with one choice, one act of instinct and courage...

He had just saved the most powerful woman’s world.

And in return, she had given him a key that he could use as a stepping stone to his change

He looked back at Madam Graciela. Her eyes held a spark of interest. Not just gratitude—but something else.

Recognition.

Respect.

And realization

A smirk curled on Adrian’s lips, not cold, not proud but curious.

Was this fate?

Or the beginning of something far greater than he could imagine?
