Chapter 5: The Wrath of the Guilds

The meteor strike of cyan lightning and silver feathers slammed into the arena dirt with the force of a artillery shell.

BOOM!

A blinding flash of arc electricity illuminated the entire stadium, followed by a concussive shockwave that sent a cloud of pulverized earth forty feet into the air. The heavy bulletproof glass surrounding the VIP boxes rattled violently in its steel frames.

When the dust settled, the wind died down to a gentle breeze.

Soren Drake’s twin Emerald Vipers lay motionless in a crater four feet deep, their scales scorched black and smoking softly. Ian stood triumphantly atop the wall of the crater, silver wings outstretched, a crown of crackling lightning dancing across its crest.

Soren was on his hands and knees at the edge of the pit, coughing hysterically, his face pale with terror.

The referee stared into the smoking crater, his clipboard trembling, before raising his flag toward me.

"WINNER OF QUARTER FINAL MATCH 3- kin cancel!"

The crowd went wild. Tens of thousands of fans stood up, chanting my name in a deafening unison that shook the arena foundation. An independent, unsponsored tamer with an evolved shelter dragon had just crushed two seeded guild favorites back to back in less than ten seconds combined.

Up in the elite VIP box, Director Drake slammed his fists against the glass balcony, shattering the crystal glass in his hand.

"Useless trash!" Drake growled, his face twisted in rage as he glared down at his defeated son being helped off the field by medics. "An F-Rank rat making a mockery of my guild's legacy on live television?"

Beside him sat Elder Vance, a senior executive of the corporate Guild Council and uncle to Gideon Vance. Elder Vance leaned back in his leather armchair, swirling a glass of wine, his eyes narrowed as he watched kin walk off the dirt ring.

"That bird’s speed and energy output exceed standard C-Rank limits," Elder Vance said coldly. "The boy didn't just evolve an E-Rank falcon. He unlocked an ancient, unregistered lineage. If he wins this tournament and registers as an independent tamer, he won't belong to any guild. Worse, he’ll inspire other independents to defy us."

Director Drake turned, his eyes flashing with lethal intent. "The Semi Finals are next. My nephew Gideon is scheduled to face him in the Finals if they both win. But I want this boy stopped now."

Elder Vance took a slow sip of wine. "Gideon’s B-Rank Shadow Panther is already infused with shadow paralysis runes. But just to ensure there are no 'accidents'... make sure the arena environment for the Semi Finals is set to Zone 4- Underground Caverns."

Drake’s lips curled into a sinister smile. "No room to fly. No wind currents. In a dark, enclosed cavern, a shadow predator will butcher a flying dragon in seconds."

Down in the underground waiting bay, I sat on a metal bench, wiping a light bead of sweat from my forehead.

Ian perched on his knee, happily pecking at a high-grade mana core I had purchased using my latest prize winnings. As Ian devoured the core, a soft blue light wrapped around both of them.

I clenched my fist, feeling the air compress inside my palm. The feedback from Ian’s growth was transforming my physical body into a weapon. My reflexes were now fast enough to dodge point blank gunfire, and my physical strength rivaled that of iron tier martial fighters.

BEEP.

The wall screen chimed, broadcasting the Semi-Final match setup.

SEMI-FINAL MATCH 1

Kin cancel (INDEPENDENT) VS. MARCUS "THE TANK" RHODES FLAME-TIGER GUILD.

SELECTED TERRAIN: STAGE 4 UNDERGROUND ROCK CAVERN

my eyes narrowed as I read the screen.

"Underground Rock Cavern?" I muttered, my voice dropping an octave.

Stage 4 was an artificial indoor dungeon ring with a low stone ceiling, heavy stalactites, and zero natural light, a terrain design specifically engineered to choke aerial beasts and favor heavy ground combatants.

"They're rigging the stage," a deep voice called out from the hallway.

I turned my head. Standing in the doorway was an older man wearing a faded, scuffed leather coat, a thick scar running down his left eye. He carried a heavy flask and wore the faded crest of an old, defunct Tamer Academy.

"Name's Captain Thorne," the veteran said, taking a swig from his flask. "Used to scout for the city guard before corporate guilds bought out the arena council. They don't like wildcards, kid. They saw your dragon’s air mobility, so they picked a stage with a twenty foot ceiling to clip your wings."

I stood up, Ian hopping smoothly onto my shoulder. "They can change the stage all they want. It won't save them." I replied.

Thorne chuckled softly, though his scarred face remained serious. "Marcus’s beast is an A-Rank Potential Obsidian Bear. In an enclosed cave, its earth shaking roars and rock armor make it nearly unkillable. If your dragon can't fly high, how do you plan to cut through three inches of solid obsidian?"

I looked down at Ian, whose silver scales flickered with a dark, concentrated cyan glare.

"Who said we need to fly high to break rock?" I said softly.

Ten minutes later, the iron gates of Arena 1 slammed shut behind me.

The bright sunlight of the stadium was completely blocked out. Heavy artificial rock walls had risen from the floor, joining together to form a massive, dim subterranean cave. Artificial stalactites hung from the jagged ceiling, casting long, eerie shadows across the damp stone ground.

The crowd’s cheers sounded muffled through the thick rock barriers, replaced by the heavy echoing footsteps of my opponent.

Stepping out of the darkness was Marcus Rhodes, a giant of a young man standing nearly six foot five, clad in heavy spiked steel plate armor. Beside him lumbered a massive, eight-foot tall Obsidian Bear, its body encased in jet black stone scales that absorbed the dim light of the cave.

"Hahaha!" Marcus’s booming laugh echoed off the cave walls. "Unlucky drawing, shelter boy! In this cave, there’s no sky for your little dragon to hide in!"

The Obsidian Bear let out a guttural roar, smashing its massive stone paws against its chest. The shockwave rattled the stalactites overhead, sending loose gravel raining down on the dirt floor.

The referee’s voice rang through the cavern speakers- "SEMI-FINAL MATCH 1... BEGIN!"

"Marcus moves first!" Marcus bellowed, slamming his fist into his palm. "Earthquake Stomp! Trap him!"

The Obsidian Bear reared back on its hind legs and slammed its heavy paws down onto the cavern floor with terrifying force.

BOOM!

The entire stone ground cracked open! Sharp spikes of jagged rock erupted from the earth in a straight line, racing straight toward me at breakneck speed, locking off my footpaths and filling the air with lethal stone shrapnel!

With the low ceiling preventing Ian from ascending, Marcus’s trap seemed absolute.

"You're done!" Marcus yelled.

I didn't panic. Through my perception, the incoming rock spikes looked almost stationary.

"Ian," I commanded, my voice cold and steady. "We don't need the sky. Use the walls. Sonic Drift- Flash Step."

Ian let out a sharp whistle.Instead of flying up, Ian shot sideways, converting its immense wind power into horizontal velocity! It bounced off the cavern wall like a lightning bolt, leaving a scorched crater where its feet touched the stone, and vanished into a blur of silver light!

ZIP! ZIP! ZIP!

Ian bounced off three cavern walls in less than half a second, the speed so intense that the air inside the closed cave began to swirl into a compressed wind tunnel!

Marcus’s eyes widened in horror as his bear looked around wildly, unable to track the silver blur zipping across the cave walls. "Where is it?!"

"Right behind you," my voice echoed from the shadows.

Ian reemerged directly above the Obsidian Bear’s head, using the momentum of three wall rebounds to concentrate its cyan lightning into a single point on its right talon.

New Skill Unlocked- Point Impact Drill

"Break it,"I ordered in a low voice

Ian descended like a diamond-tipped missile, driving its talon straight into the center of the bear’s obsidian head!

CRACK-BOOM!

The sound of shattering stone echoed through the cave like a cannon shot. The dense obsidian armor erupted into millions of black glass fragments as the bear let out a pained roar, its massive body crashing hard into the cavern floor, out cold.

The heavy wind pressure generated inside the cave blasted outward, blowing Marcus off his feet and cracking his heavy armor against the rear stone wall.

Silence returned to the cavern.

SOUL SLOT 2 UNLOCKED.

I walked through the settling dust, stopping beside the fallen bear. As the system chime echoed in my head, a glowing golden seal appeared on the back of my right hand, the mark of a second contract slot.

In the dim light of the cave, I looked up toward the VIP viewing glass, my eyes burning with an undeniable dominant light.

The guilds had rigged the arena, shortened the sky, and brought an invincible wall of stone.

And I had shattered it all.
