CHAPTER 8: THE SHADOWS OF FROSTPEAK

The golden crown rested lightly on Samson’s brow, but its physical presence felt heavier than any steel plate or reinforced cuirass he had worn back when he was merely an apprentice at Castle Oakhaven.

Three days had passed since the dramatic liberation of Valen. Already, the great capital had begun the arduous process of rebuilding itself from the ashes—moldering timber was systematically cleared from the avenues, broken masonry was reset by squads of earth-mages, and the wounded were tended by rows of high clerics chanting soothing restoration spells.

Yet, despite the warm sun shining brightly over the Great Plaza, an ominous, unnatural chill drifted steadily down from the northern horizon. It was a cold that smelled faintly of old frost and dried grave-dirt, a reminder that the victory in the capital was only the opening battle of a much larger war.

Inside the High War Room, high up in the citadel's secure eastern tower, a massive table crafted from dense, polished white oak held a sprawling, incredibly detailed magical map of the continent of Aethelgard. Surrounding the glowing holographic map were Princess Aurelia, Commander Raymond, and two critical envoys who had slipped past the border checkpoints under the cover of night.

To the left stood Lady Sylvanas, a High Elf ranger emissary from the distant Moonlit Canopy. Her silver armor was exquisitely adorned with intricate leaf motifs, and her sharp, emerald eyes were as cold and sharp as flint. To the right stood Thane Borin, a stout, thick-bearded Dwarf Lord of Ironhold, wearing heavy steel plate armor etched with glowing, deep-red rune-craft that pulsed with inner heat.

"The Frostpeak Pass has fallen," Thane Borin grunted without preamble, slamming a heavy, iron-clad gauntlet onto the map right over the jagged mountain range that bordered the northern human territories. "The Lich King's vanguard didn't just march through the gates—they raised every fallen dwarf in the lower mining levels. My kin are trapped deep in the subterranean halls, fighting a desperate war on two fronts against our own ancestors."

Lady Sylvanas stepped forward smoothly, her voice musical yet cool, sounding like wind rustling through dry autumn leaves.

"The corrupted black frost is spreading south through the ancient woods," she warned, pointing to the trembling green lines on the map. "The Great Tree of the Moonlit Canopy is weeping dark, toxic sap. If the Ley-Lines beneath Frostpeak are fully severed by necrotic magic, the forest will rot from the inside out, and the arcane barrier shielding our ancestral lands will collapse entirely."

Samson stood quietly at the head of the long table, his hand resting calmly on the hilt of the Holy Light Sword. His steady golden eyes swept over the map, tracking the aggressive, creeping black ink lines that marked the unchecked advance of the undead legion.

"The Lich King doesn't just want territory," Samson said, his voice deep and resonant, cutting through the rising tension in the room. "He seeks the Primordial Nexus buried deep beneath Frostpeak. Malakor's attack on Valen was merely meant to distract us while their main strike force secured the subterranean veins. If the Lich King drains the Nexus, he won't just control the north—he will possess enough raw, ancient energy to freeze the entire continent into a permanent, lifeless tomb."

Commander Raymond leaned heavily over the table, his face drawn and weary from lack of sleep. "We do not have the manpower or the supplies to launch a conventional, full-scale assault on Frostpeak head-on. Our garrisons are heavily depleted from the siege, and the provincial lords are still struggling to regroup their levies."

"We don't need a massive, lumbering army," Samson replied, his gaze meeting Raymond's with absolute conviction. "We need a swift, lethal vanguard fast enough to strike before their ritual can be completed."

Samson turned his attention to the two foreign envoys, mapping out the strategy in his mind.

"Lady Sylvanas, bring your swift, elite arcana archers to secure the treacherous mountain flanks and intercept their flying scouts," Samson ordered. "Thane Borin, lead my heavy infantry through the deep, secret mining tunnels your kin forged beneath the stone years ago. Bypass their main gate entirely."

Samson placed both hands on the edge of the table, leaning forward. "Ignis and I will strike from the sky, breaking their aerial defense lines directly."

For a second, the room was dead silent. Then, Thane Borin let out a booming, chest-deep laugh that rattled the goblets on the sideboard, clapping his massive gauntlets together with a metallic ring.

"Now that is a battle plan fit for a true king!" Borin roared with approval. "The hammers of Ironhold are at your back, Dragon Emperor! We’ll cave in their skulls!"

Lady Sylvanas offered a slow, deeply graceful bow, a faint hint of respect touching her usually austere expression. "The bows of the Moonlit Canopy shall clear your path through the mists, Lord Samson."

With the strategy locked in place, Samson walked away from the war table toward the wide stone balcony overlooking the bustling palace courtyard below.

In the center of the yard, Ignis raised his massive, horned head at the sound of his rider's approach. The dragon let out a soft, low rumble that vibrated through the stones, his immense wings fanning the crisp air as he instinctively sensed his rider's intent.

The grand alliance of man, elf, and dwarf had finally been forged. But as Samson looked past the courtyard and far to the north, where the dark, jagged peaks of Frostpeak loomed menacingly against the horizon, he felt the cold breath of the Lich King whispering across the sky—a silent, creeping promise of an ancient, terminal winter that sought to consume every living soul on the continent.

Standing on the stone ramparts of the port city, Thane Borin adjusted his gauntlets, watching as black-iron mortars hurled globes of violet fire into the harbor walls."Hold the line, ye sea-dogs!" Borin roared, slamming his warhammer against the battlements. Beside him, thousands of dwarven ballistas and elven arbalests rained enchanted steel into the oncoming landing craft, but for every dark vessel destroyed, two more surged through the black waves.Suddenly, the sky above the clouds flared with a brilliant, blinding golden light.A sound like tearing thunder shattered the dark sky as the sky-fleet arrived. The ocean below had long since lost its natural luster, turned instead to the bruised, unholy color of dark iron and curdled oil.As Ignis soared eastward over the usually vibrant expanse of the Sapphire Gulf, the calm, crystalline blue waters violently gave way to black, churning swells. Thick, tar-like Abyssal residue floated upon the surface of the waves, choking the once-abundant marine life and sending endless schools of silver fish floating belly-up in its wake. The very breath of the ocean felt heavy, choked by the necrotic poison leaking from the newly torn spatial wound miles to the south.Ahead, piercing through the dense, salt-heavy fog of the horizon, rose the jagged volcanic peaks of the Dragon’s Roost—a treacherous archipelago of stark basalt pillars surrounded by boiling, subterranean sea-trenches. For three thousand long years, ever since the catastrophic fall of the First Empire, no human boot had ever touched these forbidden shores. The ancient, proud dragons who roo

On the high summit platform of Frostpeak, the shattered remains of the Lich King’s glacier armor lay hollow and completely silent, already rapidly dissolving into mist under the high noon sun.Down in the gorge, the unified horns of the alliance echoed off the sheer granite cliffs—a triumphant, thunderous chorus of heavy dwarven iron-horns, delicate elven silver-flutes, and sharp human bugles announcing a new dawn.Thane Borin was the first to reach the summit, taking the steep, icy stone steps three at a time despite his heavy plate armor. His thick beard was singed black with soot, but his weathered face carried a wide, gap-toothed grin as he hoisted his blood-stained warhammer onto his broad shoulder."By the ancestors' stone!" Borin bellowed, stopping to gasp for air as he gazed down at the purified Nexus. "The dark rot is gone

He brought the Holy Light Sword up in a lightning-fast, sharp diagonal parry.CLANG!The impact rang out like a dying, hollow bell across the high mountain summit. It was a heavy, biting atmosphere that clung to the throat and froze the lungs with every inhalation.Snow fell across the jagged landscape not in soft, gentle flakes, but in hard, needle-thin shards driven violently sideways by a howling, unrelenting northern gale. Beneath the dense, gray canopy of towering pine trees, a strange, historic, and awe-inspiring army was assembling in the deep shadows of the crags.Human knights of the Royal Guard, their polished armor now dulled by travel and grime, stood shoulder-to-shoulder with elite High Elf archers wrapped in shimmering silver-green cloaks that blended seamlessly into the frost-bitten woods.
