Victor stared at Adrian.

“Their debt?”

Adrian nodded.

“Every private account you can identify.”

Victor leaned back in his seat.

“You bought Cole Meridian’s debt without telling me?”

“I didn't think you'd approve.”

“That isn't funny.”

“I wasn't joking.”

Victor rubbed his forehead.

“Do you have any idea what happens if Marcus discovers who owns it?”

“He'll panic.”

“He'll fight.”

“Same thing.”

Victor looked at him for a long moment.

“You've changed.”

Adrian glanced toward the window.

“Eight years can do that.”

The sedan turned onto a quieter road.

Victor opened his laptop.

“There's something you need to understand. Apex Meridian isn't some small company you built in a rented office.”

“I know.”

“You've acquired businesses in six countries.”

“Seven.”

Victor looked up.

Adrian continued watching the city.

“You forgot the logistics company in Singapore.”

Victor shook his head.

“Right. Seven.”

He turned the laptop toward Adrian.

A corporate profile appeared on the screen.

Apex Meridian Holdings.

Assets spread across technology, logistics, energy, property and private investments.

At the bottom was one name.

**Chairman: Adrian Vale.**

Victor tapped the screen.

“That's the name you've been using publicly.”

“Not publicly.”

“Your companies know you.”

“Senior executives do.”

“Most of the market has never seen your face.”

“That was intentional.”

Victor closed the laptop.

“Then explain something to me.”

“What?”

“Why come back personally?”

Adrian was quiet.

The question had followed him for years.

He could have investigated Richard Cole's death from another country.

He could have destroyed Marcus financially without ever stepping into Cole Meridian.

But there were things documents couldn't tell him.

People lied differently when they thought they were safe.

“I want to see their faces,” Adrian said.

Victor didn't respond.

Adrian looked down at his phone.

The anonymous messages were still there.

Someone inside Cole Meridian knew he had returned.

Someone knew he was investigating.

And someone was afraid of what he might discover.

His phone rang.

This time, it was Elena Cross.

Adrian answered.

“Tell me.”

Elena didn't waste time with greetings.

“Your acquisition went through.”

“I know.”

“There is a problem.”

“There always is.”

“Cole Meridian has another creditor.”

Adrian sat upright.

“Name.”

“Blackstone Capital Partners.”

Victor's expression changed when he heard the name.

Adrian noticed.

“You know them?”

Victor nodded slowly.

“They don't normally buy distressed corporate debt.”

“Who runs it?”

“Elijah Grant.”

Adrian frowned.

The name meant nothing to him.

Elena continued.

“And that's not the worst part.”

“Go on.”

“Grant bought his position less than forty-eight hours ago.”

Adrian looked at Victor.

“After I returned?”

“Three hours after your arrival in the city.”

The car became quiet.

Adrian leaned back.

“Find out who contacted him.”

“I'll try.”

“Don't try.”

Elena paused.

“Understood.”

The call ended.

Victor looked at him.

“You think this is connected?”

“I think someone knew I was coming before I arrived.”

“That would mean—”

“Someone has been watching me.”

Victor's phone suddenly rang.

He answered.

“Hello?”

His expression changed.

“Say that again.”

Adrian watched him.

Victor listened for several seconds before ending the call.

“What happened?”

“Cole Meridian just called an emergency board meeting.”

“When?”

“Tomorrow morning.”

Adrian smiled faintly.

“That was quick.”

“They're trying to stop the debt transfer.”

“They can't.”

“Maybe not.”

Victor hesitated.

“They're also accusing Apex Meridian of using an illegal shell company to acquire the debt.”

Adrian looked at him.

“They don't know who owns Apex.”

“Not officially.”

“Good.”

Victor frowned.

“Why?”

“Because I want them to keep guessing.”

---

The next morning, Cole Meridian's boardroom was packed.

Marcus stood at the head of the table.

Around him sat eleven directors.

Some looked nervous.

Others were angry.

A large screen displayed financial figures from the previous quarter.

Marcus tapped the table.

“Someone has purchased a significant portion of our outstanding debt.”

A director frowned.

“Who?”

“We don't know.”

“That is unacceptable.”

“I agree.”

Another director spoke.

“How much?”

Marcus hesitated.

“Thirty-one percent.”

The room erupted.

“Thirty-one?”

“When did this happen?”

“Which institution sold it?”

Marcus raised his hand.

“Everyone, calm down.”

The noise faded.

“The buyer used a private investment structure. We've requested the records.”

“And?”

“They refused.”

A director leaned forward.

“Who refuses a board request?”

Marcus looked at him.

“Someone who doesn't fear us.”

Silence.

Marcus hated that sentence.

Because it was true.

He looked toward the empty chair at the far end of the table.

That seat had belonged to Richard Cole.

It had remained empty for eight years.

Marcus had never allowed anyone to use it.

Today, he wished he had.

His assistant entered the room.

“Mr. Cole.”

Marcus turned.

“What?”

“There is someone here to see you.”

“Who?”

The assistant swallowed.

“Adrian Cole.”

Several directors exchanged looks.

Marcus's face tightened.

“Tell him I'm busy.”

“He said you would say that.”

Marcus stared at her.

“And?”

“He said he would wait.”

A director gave a nervous laugh.

“Perhaps we should hear him out.”

Marcus shot him a look.

“You don't know what you're talking about.”

The boardroom doors opened.

Adrian walked in.

He wasn't wearing anything extravagant.

Dark suit.

White shirt.

No tie.

He carried a thin folder under one arm.

The room became silent.

Adrian looked around.

Eight years ago, he had stood in this same room while people called him a thief.

Now they were staring at him as if they weren't sure who had invited whom.

Marcus stood.

“You were told not to come here.”

Adrian pulled out a chair.

“I wasn't told.”

He sat.

Marcus's jaw tightened.

“This is a private board meeting.”

“I know.”

“Then leave.”

Adrian opened the folder.

“I own thirty-one percent of your debt.”

The room went silent.

One director stood abruptly.

“What?”

Marcus stared at Adrian.

“You?”

Adrian looked up.

“I didn't say I owned it personally.”

Marcus's eyes narrowed.

“Then who does?”

Adrian smiled slightly.

“That's the question, isn't it?”

A director slammed his hand on the table.

“This is manipulation.”

“No.”

Adrian placed a document on the table.

“It's business.”

Marcus picked it up.

His eyes moved across the page.

The transfer agreement.

The debt portfolio.

The acquisition date.

Everything was legal.

Marcus looked up.

“Who authorized this?”

Adrian leaned back.

“You're asking the wrong person.”

“Then give me the right one.”

“I don't think you're ready.”

Marcus stepped closer.

“You think you can walk back into this company after eight years and threaten us?”

Adrian looked at him.

“No.”

He closed the folder.

“I'm not threatening anyone.”

He stood.

“You're already in trouble.”

The boardroom doors opened again.

Elena Cross entered.

Every head turned.

She placed a document in front of the board secretary.

“Good morning.”

Marcus stared at her.

“Who are you?”

“Elena Cross.”

“I know your name.”

“Then you know why I'm here.”

Marcus didn't answer.

Elena looked toward Adrian.

“The acquisition agreement has been finalized.”

Marcus's face changed.

Adrian walked toward the door.

Marcus called after him.

“Adrian.”

Adrian stopped.

Marcus's voice was lower now.

“If you think this gives you control over Cole Meridian, you're mistaken.”

Adrian looked back.

“I don't need control.”

He paused.

“I only need enough pressure to make the right people talk.”

Then he left.

Marcus stood frozen.

The directors looked at one another.

And for the first time since Adrian had returned, Marcus understood something.

His nephew hadn't come back for his inheritance.

He had come back with a company powerful enough to take it.
