Chapter 15: An Unexpected Ally

The afternoon light painted Brandon's face golden as we sat in my grandfather's penthouse office. He'd been quiet since returning from Lily's school, something heavy weighing on his shoulders. I watched him fidget with his coffee cup, unusual for someone normally so confident. Finally, he set the cup down and looked me straight in the eye.

"I need to tell you something," Brandon said, his voice steady but soft. "About the Pierce family. About what I've seen over the years."

I leaned back in my chair, giving him space to speak. The city hummed below us, thirty floors down, but up here it felt like we were in a different world. Brandon stood and walked to the window, his reflection ghostlike in the glass.

"I've worked for the Pierce family since I was eighteen," he began. "My father got me the job, said it would teach me about business. First day, Victoria had me organize files in her home office. That's when I saw how she talked about you." He turned to face me, pain clear in his eyes. "She called you 'the charity case' in her notes. Had a whole file labeled 'Ethan Problem' with strategies to keep you dependent and weak."

My chest tightened, but I stayed silent. Brandon needed to get this out.

"I watched her poison Emma against you, drop little comments every day. 'Ethan's grades are slipping again.' 'Did you see those awful shoes he wore today?' 'You deserve someone with ambition, darling.'" Brandon's hands clenched into fists. "She turned her own daughter into a weapon against you. And I just... stood there. Took my paycheck and said nothing."

"You were young," I said, though the words tasted bitter. "We all were."

Brandon shook his head violently. "That's an excuse. I saw evil happening and chose comfort over courage. When they had those dinner parties where Victoria would make you serve guests like a servant, I should have said something. When she 'accidentally' spilled wine on your only good shirt before that school dance, I should have spoken up." His voice cracked. "I was a coward, and I'm sorry."

The apology hung between us like a bridge waiting to be crossed. I stood and walked over to him, seeing not the bully who'd tormented me, but a young man carrying guilt that had finally become too heavy.

"You're here now," I said simply. "That matters more than what you didn't do then."

Brandon pulled an envelope from his jacket pocket and handed it to me. Inside was a resignation letter, addressed to Victoria Pierce, dated today. "I quit this morning. Sent copies to Victoria, Marcus, and their HR department. I'm done taking their money."

I read the letter, noting its professional tone that still managed to convey disgust. "This must have been hard. Your family has ties to the Pierces going back generations."

"My father's furious," Brandon admitted with a hollow laugh. "Said I'm throwing away my future. But what future is worth having if it's built on hurting innocent people?" He met my eyes again. "I watched them destroy you for years. I won't watch them destroy Lily too."

The mention of Lily sent ice through my veins. The threatening photo from this morning felt like it had happened days ago, not hours. "Speaking of which, I need someone I can trust protecting her. The position of head of personal security is open. It pays triple what the Pierces were giving you."

Brandon's eyes widened. "You want me as your security head? After everything?"

"You know their tactics, their connections, their weaknesses," I explained, returning to my desk. "You've been inside their organization for years. Plus, you've already proven you'll stand between Lily and danger. That's worth more than any résumé."

"I accept," Brandon said without hesitation. Then, quieter, "There's something else you should know. Victoria has secret meetings every Thursday at the Riverside Hotel. Room 1247. She thinks nobody knows, but I saw the recurring charge on the company credit card she doesn't know I had access to."

I grabbed a pen and wrote down the information. "Who does she meet?"

"Different people. But last week, I saw her going in with a man carrying medical files. Thick ones, like patient records." Brandon pulled out his phone and showed me a blurry photo taken from across the street. "I couldn't get close enough to see his face clearly, but he drove a car registered to Peaceful Gardens Nursing Facility."

My pulse quickened. That was the same facility Maxwell had mentioned, where the fifty-thousand-dollar monthly payments went. The pieces were connecting, forming a picture I didn't fully understand yet.

My phone rang. Maxwell's name appeared on the screen.

"We need to talk about Lily's inheritance," Maxwell said immediately. "Can Brandon hear this?"

I put the phone on speaker. "He's my security head now. He can hear everything."

"Good, you'll need someone you trust for this." Papers rustled on Maxwell's end. "I've been reviewing the inheritance documents for Lily's parents' estate. According to their will, if both parents died, everything would go to Lily when she turns eighteen. But there's a clause—if Lily were to die before reaching legal age, the entire estate transfers to the next of kin."

"Who's the next of kin?" I asked, already dreading the answer.

"Victoria Pierce. She's Marcus's wife, and Marcus is Lily's uncle through his deceased brother." Maxwell's voice turned grim. "The estate is worth twelve million dollars. That's a lot of motive for murder."

Brandon slammed his hand on the desk. "She killed them for money? Her own family?"

"We don't have proof of murder yet," Maxwell cautioned. "But the timing is suspicious. They died three years ago, just when Victoria's embezzlement started escalating. She needed money to cover her tracks, and suddenly her husband's brother dies in a convenient accident."

I thought about little Lily, drawing pictures of rabbit families, not knowing someone in her own family might have murdered her parents. "What about the medical files Brandon saw? Could one of them still be alive?"

The second man was younger, nervous. His leg bounced constantly, and sweat beaded on his forehead despite the cool room. He looked like someone who'd made bad choices and knew more were coming. When they asked about Victoria, his eye twitched—just for a second—but he said nothing.I studied them both, these men who'd tried to steal Lily's innocence again. They were tools, weapons aimed by someone else's hand. But tools could sometimes be turned against their users.Brandon stood beside me, his anger radiating like heat. "Give me five minutes alone with them," he muttered."No," I said, though part of me wanted the same thing. "We do this legally. Every step by the book. Victoria's the real enemy, not these hired thugs."Back in the counselor's office, Lily had fallen asleep in the chair, exhausted by trauma and tears. Looking at her peaceful face, I made a decision. The penthouse wasn't safe enough anymore. The security was good, but Victoria had resources we hadn't discovered yet. Sh

The call came at 11:47 in the morning. I was in my office reviewing contracts when my phone lit up with the school's emergency number. My hand froze over the papers I'd been signing, and I knew before answering that something was wrong. The principal's voice was controlled but urgent, each word carefully measured to prevent panic."Mr. Blackwell, we need you here immediately. We're in lockdown. Your ward is safe, but there's been an incident."I was already moving before she finished speaking, grabbing my jacket and racing toward the elevator. My fingers found Brandon's number without looking, and he answered on the first ring."There's trouble at Lily's school," I said, not bothering with greetings. "They're in lockdown.""I'm already in the car," Brandon replied, and I could hear tires squealing in the background. "Got an alert from my team three minutes ago. Two men in a black van have been circling the school since morning. My guys are following them."The elevator moved too slowl

Victoria laughed, but it sounded forced. "You think you've already won. But you don't know what I'm capable of. You don't know the connections I have, the power I can still wield.""Your connections are abandoning you," I informed her. "Marcus is with the district attorney right now. Daniel is in a cell. You're alone, Victoria.""I'm never alone," she said cryptically. "And neither are you. Watch your back, Ethan. Watch everyone you care about. This isn't over."The line went dead.Thomas immediately saved the recording to three different drives. "That's assault, threatening a minor, admission of embezzlement, and conspiracy. This alone could put her away for years.""Send copies to the district attorney and the FBI," I instructed. "But keep one for our records."Margaret was already on her phone with our night editor. "Run the story. Front page, digital edition goes live in one hour." She looked at me. "Are you sure you want to escalate this fast?""She just threatened Lily," I said,

The conference room at Blackwell Media Holdings felt like a war room at midnight. My jaw still throbbed from Daniel's punch, but I ignored the pain as I sat at the head of the polished table. Around me, five of the sharpest media executives my grandfather's money had assembled waited for orders. The city lights sparkled through floor-to-ceiling windows, unaware that we were about to shake their foundations with truth.Margaret Chen, my chief editor, spread newspapers across the table like playing cards. Each headline from the past week showed the Pierce family's growing troubles, but we hadn't released the real story yet. She adjusted her glasses and looked at me with the intensity of someone who'd exposed corruption for thirty years."The video of Daniel attacking you has eight million views already," she said, tapping her tablet. "Public sentiment is completely on your side. This is the perfect time to strike."David Kim, head of digital strategy, pulled up his laptop. "I've had our

The university library stood like a fortress of knowledge against the evening sky. I had come here after visiting Lily, needing a quiet place to review the documents before tonight's meeting with Marcus Pierce. The campus was mostly empty at seven o'clock, just a few students hurrying between buildings. I should have noticed the footsteps following me from the parking lot, but my mind was on Victoria's crimes and the parent she'd hidden in that nursing facility. The first punch came from behind, catching me just below my left ear. The world tilted sideways, and my papers scattered across the concrete like white birds trying to fly. I stumbled forward, my vision blurring, and turned to see Daniel Pierce standing there with his fists raised. His face was twisted with rage, nothing like the smirking bully I'd known for years. This was someone whose world was crumbling, and he'd decided I was to blame."You destroyed everything!" Daniel screamed, spit flying from his mouth. His expensive

"That's what I'm trying to confirm," Maxwell said. "My contact at the nursing facility is checking their records tonight. If someone's being hidden there under Victoria's payment, we'll know by morning.""Morning might be too late," I said, checking my watch. It was already four in the afternoon. "Victoria's divorce hearing is tomorrow. She's trying to grab everything and run.""Then we need to move tonight," Maxwell agreed. "I'll have everything ready by eight o'clock. Every document, every transaction, every crime she's committed laid out in perfect order."After Maxwell hung up, Brandon and I sat in silence for a moment. The weight of what we were uncovering pressed down on both of us. This wasn't just about money anymore. This was about murder, conspiracy, and a child whose entire world was built on lies."I need to ask you something," Brandon said suddenly. "That necklace you wear—your mother's necklace. Victoria tried to buy it from you once, didn't she?"I touched the chain aro
