Julian's first call
I didn't go to bed after we put the ledger back. I sat by the window and watched the sky turn from black to gray, with the copied pages folded small inside my shoe, and I kept seeing that line in the margin. Locate and confirm. Three years ago, a man had signed his name to a plan to find me, and then he had hugged me at his father's table. The phone Ines had given me buzzed on the nightstand a little after seven. Unknown number. I almost let it ring out, but something told me to answer, and when I did I heard breathing, fast and wet, like a man who had been running."Eli, it's me."I knew the voice at once. I hadn't heard it since I walked out of his glass office, and it still made my jaw tighten, because the last time I had heard it before that, it was coming out of a car window outside the loading dock. No hard feelings, buddy. How did you get this number?"Ines gave it to me. Listen, I can't talk long, I'm in a stairwell." He was whispering, and I could hear his shoes scuffing on c
The ledger
The house went quiet slowly, the way a tide goes out. First the kitchen staff, then the guards on the lower floors, then the last of the cousins whose voices carried up the stairwell until a door shut on them. I sat on the edge of my bed in the dark with my shoes already on and listened to the old building settle around me. At half past one there were three soft taps on my door.Ines wore black from collar to boots, and she carried nothing but a small flashlight with a strip of tape over the lens so it threw only a thin line of light. She didn't speak. She jerked her chin toward the hall, and I followed her.We kept to the edges of the corridors where the carpet muffled everything. Twice she stopped me with a hand on my chest, and twice a guard passed below us, his footsteps unhurried and his radio muttering. I could hear my pulse in my ears. I had spent a week in this house learning that nobody here ever slept as deeply as they pretended, and every shadow felt like it had a pair of e
Absent friends
I found Ines in the kitchen at first light, standing alone at the long steel counter with a cup of black coffee she wasn't drinking. The cooks hadn't arrived yet. The room was cold and quiet, the pots hanging silent on their hooks, and she looked up when I came in with the expression of someone who had been expecting me for hours."You didn't sleep," she said."Neither did you." I pulled out a stool and sat across from her. The iron key was still in my pocket, and I could feel its weight against my leg like a second heartbeat. "Viktor told me he watched us the whole time. My mother, me, all of it. He knew, Ines."Her cup stopped halfway to her mouth. Then she set it down very carefully. "He told you that himself?"You didn't know?"I suspected. I never had proof." She stared into the coffee. "I spent twenty-five years believing I had hidden you from him. It turns out he just let me think so."I let the silence sit. I wasn't ready to talk about it, and neither was she, so we both looke
The summons
The knock came after midnight. I was still in my suit, sitting on the floor with my back against the bed, staring at the wall and trying to remember the sound of Mara crying so I could feel something about it. It was one of Viktor's guards at the door, a heavy man with a flat voice, and he said my father was asking for me. Alone. I followed him down the dark hallway. The house was quiet in a way I had learned to distrust, every door shut and every light low, as if the walls themselves were listening. At the tall double doors he stopped, opened them, and stepped aside without meeting my eyes. The room had changed since the first night. There were more machines now, and a nurse in the corner who rose when I came in and left without being told. Viktor lay propped against his pillows, smaller than before, the silk hanging off his shoulders. The lamp beside him threw his shadow huge across the wall, and it was the only part of him that still looked like a man who ran a city. "Close the d
The choice
They moved Marcus's body before sunrise, and by morning the carpet had been scrubbed so thoroughly you would never have guessed anyone died there. That frightened me almost as much as the death itself. In this house a man could be wiped out of a room in a few hours, and everyone would go on eating breakfast.I didn't sleep. I sat on the edge of the bed in the white room with my hands between my knees, looking at the sink where I had scrubbed them twice. Marcus had said my mother sounded like a woman worth knowing. He was the first person in this house to say her name with any kindness, and he had died with my wine in his throat.Ines came in at dawn without knocking. She looked older than she had the day before, her coat creased and her eyes ringed with gray. She shut the door and leaned against it."Dario talked," she said. "Not willingly, and not for long. He wasn't working for himself. He's been on a rival's payroll for three years, one of the families that has wanted this empire s

Dessert arrived with a toast. Servants moved down the table with silver trays and set a fresh glass of dark red wine at every place, and the room settled into the careful quiet I had come to recognize. Mine was placed in front of me by a young man with a stiff neck and sweating hands. He didn't nod the way the others had. He set the glass down and stepped back too quickly, and I noticed only because I was noticing everything that night.Marcus, the old accountant who had taken the empty seat beside me halfway through dinner, leaned over with a wheezing laugh. He was the only person at that table who had spoken to me like a person. He had asked about my mother, and when I told him how she hummed over the dishes, he smiled into his napkin and said she sounded like a woman worth knowing. For ten minutes I had forgotten where I was."You haven't touched your glass," he said. They'll notice, boy. In this house a full glass is an insult.I don't drink much."Then wet your lips and look grat
