The colossal lizard unfurled its forked tongue once more, striking with the speed of lightning to seize another of the frozen goat-demons. The creatures did not stand their ground by choice—escape was impossible. Behind them, the beast’s massive body stretched across the entire clearing, its tail extending for dozens of paces, coiled like a great stone serpent among the trees. Even if they fled, death would find them just the same. In a desperate bid for survival, two of the remaining demons turned and leaped into the lake’s turquoise depths.
