PRESSURE
The training ground was a small clearing in the woods behind the Windsor main house. The grasses were overgrown and wild, but flat enough for practice. Axel had been at it for hours, his palms glowing with blue flame, sweat dripping down his face.He tried to shape the flame into a ball but all he got was a little flickering and then it ended up dead. He tried to extend it into a stream. It sputtered and vanished. He tried to hold it steady for more than thirty seconds. It burned bright for a moment, then collapsed like a dying breath."Again," Mariette said from across the clearing. Her voice was flat, impatient."I can't," Axel said, gasping. "I've been at this all day, I need a break.""You don't have time for a break. The families are closing in the same goes for Harrison too. You need to be ready.""I know I need to be ready!" He spun to face her, his hands dropping to his sides. "You keep telling me that but pushing me harder isn't making it better. It's making it worse."Mariet
DAMIAN'S GAMBIT
The ruins of the Hawthorne estate rose from the mist like a skeleton of a forgotten empire. Blackened stone walls, collapsed roofs, and the skeletal remains of what had once been grand towers. The fire had taken everything, the wood, the fabric, the memories. Damian Falcone stood at the edge of the property, his hands clasped behind his back, his red Aevum flickering faintly beneath his skin. He had been standing there for ten minutes, just watching and waiting. "Sir?" One of his enforcers stepped forward, a young man with nervous eyes. "The perimeter is secure. No sign of anyone."Damian didn't respond, he just kept staring at the ruins. He had been to this place once before. Years ago. When the fires were still smoldering, the smell of ash still hung in the air like a funeral shroud. He had walked through the ruins then, searching for answers but had found nothing. Just bodies, bones and the hollow shells of a family that had been erased from existence. But he had always suspected
THE WINDSOR LEDGER
Mariette's eyes fluttered open, they looked blue, normal and confused."Axel?" Her voice was weak, barely above a whisper. "What happened?"Axel knelt beside her, his hands still trembling. He didn't know how to answer or how could he tell her that she had attacked him? That the corruption inside her had taken over, even for a moment?"You don't remember?" he asked carefully. She shook her head, wincing as she tried to sit up. "I remember... feeling something, like a pulling. Like someone was reaching inside me." She pressed her hand to her temple. "And then nothing."Axel helped her sit up. Her face was pale, her eyes hollow. She looked like she had aged ten years in the span of a few minutes."We need to keep moving," she said finally. "The eastern exit is close. We can rest at the main house.""Are you sure you're okay to walk?"She managed a weak smile. "I've been worse, much worse."The eastern exit led to a crumbling stone staircase that wound upward into darkness. Axel climbed
ECHOES
The tunnel stretched on forever as they both continued walking. Axel walked in silence, his hand pressed against the damp stone wall, his eyes fixed on the faint blue glow emanating from his palm. The light was steady now, controlled, intentional. He had learned to summon it without thinking or fear. But the echoes in his head were getting louder. It started as a whisper in the back of his mind. A voice that wasn't his own, speaking words he didn't understand. Then came the flashes like images that flickered behind his eyes like heat lightning. A field of blue fire. A figure standing in the center, tall and still, watching. A city he didn't recognize, crumbling into ash.He shook his head, trying to clear the images but they kept coming."You're not ready yet."The voice was soft, ancient, familiar. It wasn't Harrison's nor was it Mariette's. It was something else. Something that felt like it had been waiting inside him his whole life."Axel?" Mariette's voice cut through the fog. "A
THE DEAL WITH MARLOWE
Harrison was too weak to go with Vince and Leo so he sent them to go get his son. He sat in the wooden chair at the center of the room, his hands gripping the armrests so tightly his knuckles had gone white. His breathing was shallow, his skin was pale, slick with sweat. The black rot on his stomach had spread further, creeping up toward his ribs, down toward his hip, pulsing with a sickly yellow light that flickered beneath his skin.He had been sitting there for hours, staring at the wall, trying to ignore the pain but it was getting harder. Every breath felt like fire. Every heartbeat sent a fresh wave of agony through his body.He was dying. He knew that now.The cloaked figure's words echoed in his mind. "The clock is ticking, Harrison."He had refused the deal twice but the clock was still ticking. And the rot was still spreading.Harrison closed his eyes. He thought about Axel, about Mariette, about the life he could have had if he had made different choices. Then he opened his
YOU DEFINE IT
The tunnel was dark and cold. Water dripped from somewhere above, echoing through the narrow passage like a slow, steady heartbeat. Axel followed his mother through the darkness, his hand pressed against the damp stone wall for balance. His other hand glowed faintly blue, casting just enough light to see a few feet ahead. They had been walking for what felt like hours. The tunnel twisted and turned, branching off into passages that seemed to lead nowhere. Mariette moved with purpose, never hesitating, never looking back. She knew these tunnels. She had grown up in them.Axel's legs ached. His lungs burned. But he didn't complain. He couldn't stop thinking about what had happened in the city. The enforcers. The purple Aevum. The way his flames had exploded out of him like something alive. He had hurt someone, burned them and seen the fear in their eyes. And a part of him had liked it."Stop," Mariette said suddenly.Axel almost collided with her. She had stopped in front of a rusted i
