Chapter 5 — The Divorce Papers
last update2026-08-14 03:43:41

The courthouse was already crowded when Daniel arrived. People moved through the large entrance in every direction. Lawyers carried folders under their arms. Couples sat together on wooden benches, waiting for their names to be called. Officers stood near the doors, watching everyone who entered.

Daniel stood outside for a moment before walking in. He had been here before. Seven years ago, he had stood in a courtroom surrounded by strangers while his life was being taken away from him.

Today, he was here for something different. His divorce.

He looked down at the folder in his hand. There were only a few papers inside. Yet somehow, those papers felt heavier than anything he had carried out of prison.

Daniel walked inside. A clerk checked his name and directed him to a waiting area. He sat alone. His eyes moved around the room. A young couple sat several seats away from him. The woman held her husband's hand tightly.

Daniel looked away. He didn't envy them. Once, he had sat exactly like that with Claire. Once, he had believed their marriage would last forever. He had been wrong.

His phone vibrated. A message from Emma.

Are you okay?

Daniel stared at it. He typed a reply.

I'm fine. I'll be home soon.

He put the phone away. He didn't want his sister worrying about him.

"Daniel Carter?"

He looked up. A court clerk stood near the door.

"Yes."

"Your case is ready."

Daniel stood. He walked into the courtroom. Claire was already there. She sat beside her lawyer. Richard was standing behind her.

Daniel's eyes briefly met Claire's. She looked away. She was dressed elegantly in a cream-colored suit. Her hair was carefully styled, and a small diamond necklace rested around her neck. She looked nothing like the woman who used to live with him in their tiny apartment.

Richard stood beside her wearing an expensive black suit. Daniel remembered what Emma had told him. Claire had already taken everything that once belonged to him. His home. His savings. His belongings. Even the life they had built together.

Daniel didn't feel angry. Not anymore. He simply walked to his seat.

The judge entered. Everyone stood. The proceedings began.

Daniel listened quietly as the lawyers went through the details. The marriage. The separation. The assets. The agreement. There were several things listed under their shared property. Daniel knew most of them had already been taken. He didn't fight. He had no desire to spend years fighting over furniture, money, or property. He wanted his freedom.

The judge looked at him. "Mr. Carter, do you understand the terms of the agreement?"

"Yes."

"Are you willing to proceed with the divorce?"

Daniel looked at Claire. She was staring at him.

"Yes."

The judge turned to Claire. "Mrs. Carter?"

Claire took a breath. "Yes."

Daniel heard the words. Mrs. Carter. For the last time.

The judge signed the document. The marriage was officially over. Just like that. Seven years of memories ended with a signature.

The clerk handed Daniel the papers. He looked down at them. There was no sadness. No anger. Just an emptiness he couldn't explain. He placed the papers inside his folder.

The hearing was over. People began leaving the courtroom. Daniel stood.

Claire walked toward him. "Daniel."

He stopped. She stood in front of him. Richard was waiting a short distance away.

"You didn't even look upset," Claire said.

Daniel looked at her. "Should I be?"

"I thought this would be difficult for you."

"It was."

She frowned. "When?"

Daniel looked toward the courthouse doors. "Seven years ago."

Claire became quiet. Daniel wasn't trying to hurt her. He was simply telling the truth.

She folded her arms. "I know you probably think I abandoned you."

"You did."

Her expression tightened. "I had to move on."

"I understand."

"You don't?"

"I said I understand."

She looked at him carefully. "You really don't hate me?"

Daniel gave a faint smile. "I don't have the energy."

Claire seemed uncomfortable with his answer. Perhaps she had expected anger. Maybe she wanted him to shout. Maybe she wanted him to beg. Instead, Daniel was calm. That seemed to bother her more.

Richard walked over. "Everything finished?"

Claire nodded. "Yes."

Richard looked at Daniel. "So, it's official."

Daniel looked at him. "Apparently."

Richard smiled. "I hope you understand that Claire has a different life now."

"I do."

"She lives in a beautiful house."

"I hope she's happy."

"She drives a new car."

"Good for her."

"She has everything she needs."

Daniel nodded. "I hope so."

Richard's smile slowly disappeared. He had clearly expected jealousy. He didn't get it.

Claire looked at Daniel. "Don't you want to know what happened to everything we owned?"

"No."

She looked surprised. "Why not?"

"Because it's yours now."

"You aren't going to fight for anything?"

Daniel shook his head. "No."

Claire stared at him. "You've changed."

Daniel looked at her. "Prison changed me."

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Richard cleared his throat. "We should go."

Claire nodded. She turned to leave. Then she stopped.

"Daniel."

He looked at her.

"If you need anything..."

She didn't finish the sentence. Daniel waited. She finally said, "You can call me."

Daniel almost smiled. "Why would I?"

Claire didn't answer. Daniel walked past her.

---

Outside the courthouse, the sun was bright. Daniel stepped onto the pavement and took a deep breath. He looked up at the sky.

He was divorced. Free from prison. Free from his marriage. But he was still carrying the weight of everything else. His family's debt. His father's illness. His mother's death. The broken company. The unanswered questions. And the seven years he could never get back.

His phone rang. It was Emma.

"Hello?"

"Are you done?"

"Yes."

"How do you feel?"

Daniel looked at the courthouse behind him. "Strangely calm."

"Did she make trouble?"

"No."

"Did she sign?"

"Yes."

Emma sighed with relief. "Good."

Daniel started walking down the street. "I'm coming home."

"Daniel?"

"Yes?"

"I found something in Dad's old cabinet."

Daniel stopped. "What?"

"I don't know. It looks like an old box."

"Don't touch it."

Emma went quiet. "Why?"

"I'll look at it when I get home."

"Okay."

The call ended. Daniel put the phone in his pocket. He began walking again.

He didn't notice the black car parked across the road. He didn't notice the man sitting inside it. The man was watching him. A camera was resting in his hand. He raised it. Click. Daniel kept walking. Click. Another photograph.

The man lowered the camera. He looked at the photographs on the screen. Daniel leaving the courthouse. Daniel standing alone. Daniel talking on the phone.

Then the man selected one photograph and sent it. A message appeared underneath it.

He's out.

A reply came almost immediately.

Are you sure it's him?

The man looked at the screen again. He zoomed in on Daniel's face. Then he typed:

Yes. It's definitely him.

Another message appeared.

Does he know?

The man looked toward Daniel. He was already disappearing into the crowd.

Not yet.

The reply came quickly.

Good. Keep watching him.

The man frowned. Then another message appeared.

Do not approach him.

He stared at the words. Then his phone vibrated again.

If he discovers who you work for, everything changes.

The man put the phone away. He watched Daniel disappear around the corner.

Daniel reached the bus stop and sat down. He looked at the divorce papers inside his folder. He had thought signing them would bring some kind of relief. It didn't. Instead, he felt like he had closed a door behind him. There was no going back now. Claire had chosen her life. He had to choose his.

Daniel looked at his reflection in the dark screen of his phone. He looked older than his age. Seven years had taken something from him. But they had also taught him something. He could survive without people who didn't value him. He could start again.

Maybe he had nothing today. But he still had his name. His family. And a chance.

The bus arrived. Daniel stood and stepped toward it. Behind him, a black car slowly pulled away from the opposite side of the road. Daniel didn't notice. He climbed onto the bus.

As it disappeared into traffic, the man inside the black car made another call. The person on the other end answered.

"Well?"

The man looked at the disappearing bus. "He's on his way home."

"Good."

"What should we do now?"

There was a long silence. Then the voice replied, "Nothing."

The man frowned. "Nothing?"

"Not yet."

"Why?"

The voice became colder. "Because I want to know what he remembers."

The call ended. The man looked at the photograph on his phone one more time. Daniel's face filled the screen. He stared at it for several seconds before whispering, "Let's see how much seven years really erased."

Then he started the car and drove away.
