CHAPTER 1

On Alex Carter's third wedding anniversary, Alex's mother-in-law called him trash. Again.

“Move faster, you useless dog!" Diane William's shrill voice rose above the chatter in the grand hall. "The guests didn't come here to watch you act like a cripple!”

Alex tightened his grip on the silver tray balanced in his hands, wine glasses shaking slightly as he served the guest. He was wearing his delivery uniform. The only clothes he owned that weren't torn. Everyone else wore designer suits and diamond necklaces.

Three years. God, had it really been three years?

Fifty guests filled the Williams ballroom all celebrating Emma as if Alex didn't exist.

He spotted her across the room looking beautiful In a red gown that cost more than he made in six months. She was laughing at something Ryan Fletcher had whispered in her ear, her hand resting casually on his arm.

Ryan. Her ex-boyfriend. The "successful entrepreneur" who'd been invited to every Williams family event for the past year. The man Diane wouldn't shut up about.

"At least Ryan knows how to dress himself," Diane had said last week, loud enough for the entire dinner table to hear. "Unlike some people who show up looking like they dug their clothes out of a dumpster."

Alex had said nothing. He never did anymore.

"Excuse me." A woman in pearls held up her empty glass without looking at him. Her nose wrinkled as if his proximity offended her. "More champagne. And try not to spill it this time."

I didn't spill it last time, Alex wanted to say. Your friend knocked my elbow deliberately. But he simply nodded, refilled her glass, and moved on.

His phone buzzed in his pocket and he checked it, another overdue payment notice. The electricity bill. His mother's old medical debts. The credit card he'd maxed out buying Emma an engagement ring she'd thrown back at him during their first anniversary fight.

"You really thought this cheap thing was appropriate?" she'd looked at the ring like it was an insult. "Ryan would've gotten me something from Tiffany's."

Then maybe you should have married Ryan.

"Watch it!"

Alex turned toward the voice just as someone's foot shot out. He tried to pivot, but the tray was already tipping, wine glasses sliding down, the crash echoed through the ballroom.

Champagne and glass everywhere. All over the floor he'd spent five hours scrubbing that morning.

Conversation died and fifty pairs of eyes turned toward him.

Alex looked up and met the familiar disappointment in Emma's gaze across the room.

“Stand up,” she mouthed, her lips barely moving behind her forced smile. “You're embarrassing me.”

This wasn't the Emma he'd married. The college girlfriend who used to laugh at his jokes even when they weren't funny. Who'd held his hand at his mother's funeral and whispered. 'We'll be okay. We don't need money.'

When did she stop believing that?

"Pathetic," someone muttered.

"I heard he can't even afford his own apartment."

"Emma must be a saint to put up with him."

Alex bent down to gather the broken glass, his hands shaking with the effort it took him not to scream.

"Leave it," Diane snapped, appearing beside him with her eyebrows drawn together sharply. "The actual staff will clean up your mess. Get your ass to the kitchen and bring out the champagne tower, and if you dare break anything else tonight, you'll be sleeping in the garage again."

"Yes, Mrs. Williams," Alex said quietly.

He walked toward the kitchen, feeling their stares. Behind him, the party resumed.

In the kitchen, Alex gripped the counter. Ten seconds. Just give me ten fucking seconds.

Just get through tonight, he told himself.

Tomorrow you can—

Could what? Leave? Where would he go? He had $127 in his bank account. No family. No friends. Emma had slowly isolated him from anyone who might have supported him. The delivery company paid minimum wage and treated him like a disposable part.

His hand went to his shirt pocket, fingers brushing the small box hidden there.

A silver necklace with a small pendant shaped like a phoenix. It had cost him $45—nearly two days' wages. He'd saved for three months to afford it.

He'd wanted to give Emma something beautiful. The phoenix was supposed to symbolize their relationship.

Now, touching the box, he felt foolish. What would a $45 necklace mean to a woman who wore diamonds without thinking about their cost?

"Get the champagne, Alex!" Diane's voice screeched from the ballroom. "Are you deaf and useless?”

Alex grabbed the champagne tower bottles and pushed through the kitchen door.

The ballroom had transformed. Someone had dimmed the lights. Grandmother Williams, the family matriarch, stood on the small stage at the far end, her walking stick tapping against the floor for attention.

"Family and honored guests," the old woman announced, her voice surprisingly strong for someone in her eighties. "We are gathered here to celebrate a blessed union and to honor tradition."

Alex paused near the back wall, champagne bottles still in his arms. This wasn't how Emma's previous anniversaries had gone.

"As is tradition in the Williams family," Grandmother continued, "the matriarch must give her blessing to the marriage on each anniversary."

She extended her hand toward the crowd.

Something like hope stirred in Alex's heart. Maybe, despite everything tonight, they would still acknowledge him. Maybe Emma would remember that they were supposed to be partners.

He took a step forward.

"Emma, darling," Grandmother said. "Come forward, child."

Emma walked toward the stage, her red gown flowing behind her.

Grandmother extended her hand.

"And the gentleman."

Alex moved forward—

Ryan stepped forward from the opposite side and took Grandmother Williams's hand.

The champagne bottles slipped from Alex's fingers and exploded against the floor.

This time, nobody even looked.

All eyes were on the stage.

Ryan led Emma forward, taking her hand.

They stood before Grandmother Williams, heads bowed and hands joined.

The old woman placed her weathered hands over theirs.

"May this union be blessed with prosperity, health, and many children."

*Union.* The word echoed in Alex's head. *This union. Not his marriage to Emma. Ryan and Emma's... what? Affair? Relationship?*

When did this happen? How long has this been going on?

Ryan pulled Emma close and kissed her. Deep and possessive, like a man claiming what belonged to him.

The room erupted in applause.

Alex stood frozen. Champagne soaked through his shoes.

He couldn't process what he was seeing.

On stage, Grandmother Williams took the microphone.

"Before we celebrate with gifts," she announced, "I have one more piece of wonderful news."

Her eyes found Alex across the room, and she looked away from him.

"News that will bring joy to everyone here... everyone except one.
