Broken

Lizzy heart drops. She imagines how she has rehearsed her script, her speeches, how applause will rain when she gives it.

How her friends become red with envy when she finally signs with Verizon. But now, all that seems like a distant dream. What is she going to do now?

She glances at Mr Theo and remembers how he has sent her an email even after months of dismissal, and her curiosity piques.

“Hey, are you even listening to—”

“Wait, Mr Theodore… why did you send me that email again after you had vehemently declined my proposal?” She asks, unable to hold her curiosity.

Lizzy watches as Mr Theo frowns, before his lips parts open for an explanation.

More than ever now, Lizzy is broken. Now she has more questions when she comes than answers.

“So what should I do? This…this is really important to me. The supplemental agreement. Maybe you could do something? Anything! I'll…I'll do anything you ask of me.” She says, as desperation latches in her voice.

Mr Theodore shakes his head. “You don't understand. How can I do something when I don't even know this…this mysterious owner? Like, I wish I could. But there's nothing I can do to help you.”

Theodore sees how broken Lizzy is, so he adds, “You can rest up here for a while before you head back home.”

And just like that, he turns his back on her and carries on with the files in the tablet he is holding.

Lizzy stands up and starts to walk to her can with trembling legs and mind that is as confused and blank as a sheet of paper. She doesn't know what to do.

As she drives back home, her head repeats what Mr Theo has said. “I only emailed you back because I got a call from someone.”

“Someone…” Lizzy grits, clenching the steering wheel hard, her nails digging into her palm.

She is almost at the very pigue of her happiness, and yet…and yet…

She hits the steering wheel as a bolt of frustration slams into her like a thunderstorm.

‘could it be Burke?’ she thinks. ‘but if it was him, wouldn't his father mention it? And if it's not him, then did he lie to her before? And who could that person have been?’

“Damn it! Damn it!” She hits the steering again, making a mental note to ask Burke when he comes to visit again.

“But then, wouldn't that hurt his pride?” Lizzy thinks further. She was almost running mad. She exhales and shakes her head.

She arrives home and drives into their garage. She parks her car and walks inside, dejection stuantering along her very steps. It is like the whole universe is mocking her, pointing and ruthlessly laughing at her.

She flings her bag on the couch the moment she walks into the massive sitting room, slouching down on the leather chair.

Her mother, Liliana, walks into the sitting room as she sits down. She is smiling, not knowing the turbulence that stirs her daughter's soul.

“You're back,” she says, smiling broadening even more. “I know you had that potential when you signed that agreement! Quickly, hurry up and show me the agreement!”

When Lizzy didn't respond, her smile slowly reduces, as she notes the room I told it finally vanishes. “Lizzy dear, what's wrong with you? You don't look happy.”

She lowers herself into the seat next to Lizzy, taking her hands into hers. “Tell mommy. You know she is here to help right?”

“I know, but mom, I don't think you'll be able to help out with this one.” She says wearily, earning a frown from Liliana's face.

“What do you mean by that?”

“It means that this is above us.”

“How can you say that? Have you forgotten how I've helped you in the past?” Liliana smiles at her daughter. “Looks like you underestimated your mother. Don't forget that I still have connections. Just hold on and you'll see what I can do.”

Lizzy nods. At this point she has no choice than to trust her mother. Maybe her mother can pull this off after all. Maybe she does have the power to call someone who can change everything.

Lizzy sits straighter, a flicker of hope sparkling in her chest as she watches her mother snap her fingers with an efficiently practiced grace.

“Phone,” Liliana says, her voice cold and commanding, the kind that permits no refusal.

The maid doesn't even hesitate, she runs towards them, bowing slightly before she scurries off like a frightened mouse.

Moments later, she returns with the phone held on a velvet tray as if it were a crown jewel.

Liliana takes it slowly, eyes on Lizzy, smiling just enough to show she's still in control.

“You forget too easily,” she says softly, running her manicured fingers down the edge of her phone. “Your mother may have retired from the Matriarchal battlefield, darling, but she still owns some of the weapons.”

She is hinting that she is still in control of some powers as a McCall.

She scrolls through her contacts, her expression unreadable. Then, with a slow inhale, she taps the screen and presses the phone to her ear.

The phone rings.

Once.

Twice.

And then, three times, making a subtle frown appear on her slightly wrinkled face.

On the fourth ring, a male, nervous voice finally answers, “H-hello?”

Liliana's eyes narrows, her smile sharpening like a knife. “Well, well… Wilton,” she drawls, “Four rings? Really? I almost forgot how full of yourself you could be.”

There's a nervous laugh from the other end. “Madame McCalls… forgive me, I didn't realize it was you.”

“Of course you didn't.” She leans back against the chair, voice silk laced with steel. “Back in the day, your family would have answered by the first half-ring. I suppose loyalty isn't what it used to be.” She reminds subtly.

Wilton Edner coughs lightly, clearly uncomfortable. “H-how may I help you?” He stutters.

He knows that Madame McCalls calls don't come for tete-a-tete. It comes with a command and favor.

Liliana gets to the point. “The supplemental agreement. My daughter needs it signed and delivered, and I'm told you're still at Verizon. So I want you to make it happen.”

  • Beneath The Silence

Rain still tapped the windows along with the tick of the clock but Andrew stood frozen, his jaw clenched so tightly it ached. His mind was rattled, this was definitely something and the empty spot where the car had been was a clue.He stared at the empty spot where the car had been minutes ago, its absence leaving a deep pain in his heart.“I can't believe all of this." He ran his hands over his face in disbelief as a surge of fury exploded in his chest as he turned and punched the nearest wall, the sharp pain grounding him just enough.“Goddammit,” he muttered, punching out a number on his smart military watch and dialing Mason's number. It rang once. Twice.“Mason here,” came the familiar voice.“I need you. Now. At Verizon. I think we’ve had a breach.”Silence for a second.“Breach?” He stalled for a minute. " What kind of breach?”“The kind I can't explain yet. But someone was here. I saw the shadow on the hallway feed. And now… nothing. They’re gone. I need you to lock down eve

  • Shadow And Truth

The air inside the Verizon building had shifted and it all started the moment Andrew had spotted the car. For some reason he couldn't just get it off his mind.“Something seems off…” He muttered, taking a step backward. For what felt like a minute of eternity he listened evenly. If he could hear anything with his years in the military, he would be able to pick any slight sound. Sighing he shrugged his shoulders, there was nothing afterall…There was nothing but solace and quietness that filled the room. There was no music playing, no soft hum of janitors working through their routine. Just the dull throb of the emergency lights and the faint creak of something far away. As he moved slowly towards the sounds, Andrew slowed his steps as he reached the fifth-floor landing, every muscle in his body tense at the anticipation for what was to comeSomething was off. He could feel it in the way the building was quiet, too quiet. And he couldn't let it go.He paused again near the fire exit d

  • Into Verizon

It had been tiring for Lizzy at this point, she was out of options…She had to carry out her most pending plan regardless of what it felt like, risk or not.Looking out of the window of the cafe lost for a while, she took a quick look at her watch.Burke was running late as usual. She kissed her teeth in disapproval before getting lost again in the other world.Outside the sky hung heavy with dark clouds that promised a threat of rain. The Streetlights cast it shimmering light right to where she took every breath and turned at every footstep. She sat at the far end of a dimly lit cafe, enough to be hidden from everyone else but him, her eyes kept flickering between the entrance and the half-empty cup in her hand. So far the place was quiet with just a few sounds from her fingers that tapped against the ceramic mug rhythmically.“What the hell, why is he taking eternity!" She grumbles. She picks up her phone and dials his cell. "Hello, what is taking you too long? Just tell me if…”S

  • Echoes In The Dark

It had been hours since the team began working, and the energy inside the room was tense, but focused. As they worked tirelessly, only one thing was at the back of their individual mind and that was finding that bit of the missing puzzle:Who was this anonymous man?The question imprinted a deep worry on Andrew who sat at the far end of the room, quietly observing everyone move from screen to screen, map to map, piecing fragments together. The silence in his mind, however, was deceptive. As deep in it, was something else… Something very disturbing that he didn't know how to pin at that moment, was this another plot from Lizzy?Every possibility spun inside his head like a carousel he couldn’t get off questions, half-formed answers, that was racing through the depth of his mind. The thought that someone might be out there wearing his face, using his name, walking in his shadow, disturbed him more than he admitted aloud…Mason walked over, and placed a cup of coffee in front of him.

  • Return And Revelation

Soon, they left the detention facility behind as the car surged forward. Andrew barely noticed the passing scenery, or Mason's conversation with someone over the phone. Thoughts of what had just happened wouldn't leave his head. After a while, Mason turned slightly to face him and said, "Are you okay, Master? You seem... distracted.""Of course I am," Andrew snapped, and went on to tell him about the person Carl said was posing as him. Mason's eyes grew wider as he listened. "The impostor somehow knew, and then used my security codes before vanishing without a trace," Andrew finished in a low growl. "Without a trace," Mason repeated slowly. "Forgive me but I find that hard to believe. This misidentification thing is just an excuse if you ask me."Andrew nodded. Mason had just spoken his mind. "Yes... I think so too," he agreed. *******Baron was standing outside the building when Andrew and Mason arrived."Finally!" he exclaimed upon seeing Andrew. He heaved a sigh of relief a

He grimaced. He ran his fingers through his already ruffled hair as he could feel a rush of adrenaline through his blood stream that brought his heart beat almost to a halt.“Well, Commander…I must say you are the last person that I was expecting to see here.” Carl turned to the man close to where he was and whispered something inaudibly. The man gave a nod and walked away leaving the two men alone.Carl clears his throat. "I just asked that he reconfirm if we have the right person, there was no way I could have missed your name …” he sighs. " Though I never checked to see who we were going after, you know how it is for a bounty hunter like myself.” Andrew clenches his fist in anger or malice but a sense of understanding at how frustrating the situation was turning out to be.“It is fine, I
