Chapter 66

The car carrying Andrew and William passed by a pile of corpses of the guards who had been shot by Marcel and two other bodyguards. They stood at the gate, replacing the guards who had become lifeless bodies.

Seeing Marcel with a gun in his hand somehow reminded Andrew of Roger. Instantly, Andrew realized that until this day he hadn't met or had a chance to speak to Roger. The painful question regarding Roger's betrayal of Orlando's father remained unanswered.

"Okay, clearly I am not your father. Since when did I have a child? I'm not even married. There's a reason why Felix said that. In the past, I did help a poor widow who had a young son, but after a few months, she ran away and disappeared without a trace. I don't know why she ran away; I treated her well. You can ask my staff at home about that. I can say that I started to care for her son, and when they were around, Felix would often visit our house.

When they left, there was a slight change in me, and since then, Felix believe

William and John's footsteps synchronized as they entered a luxurious room in one of the offices in the small town they were visiting. A wide smile appeared on William's face as the door opened and a stout middle-aged man with graying hair looked at them in surprise."John, and who is this you've brought?" the man asked. The room, guarded by five bodyguards, immediately went on high alert. Each of the guards positioned their hands near their weapons. William looked at the guards with a satisfied gaze. In his eyes, this was promising."Um...""Let me introduce myself." William interrupted John, who was about to speak. "I'm William, the leader of the strongest group, a respected businessman, and the most feared person on the continent. I'm here as the new owner of the gold mining company that you recently took from my late friend, Felix."Instantly, the expression on the man's face changed drastically. He pushed his desk and said, "Don't play games with me! What do you mean?""My words

"Great job, Andrew. Your payment this month will be much larger."William patted Andrew on the shoulder with pride, his smile widening as he left the deputy governor's office. How could he not be satisfied? His desire to enter and take control of this city had become a reality.Andrew's success in saving the deputy governor's mistress was immediately taken into account by the deputy governor himself, and the documents certifying William as a member of the deputy governor's team had already been issued. From morning until night, waiting in the office and discussing plans in a meticulous manner was not a waste of time. Even John immediately became subservient and respectful towards Andrew. Initially, he had wanted to defeat both Andrew and William."Mr. William, if possible, after this, I request that you not involve me in any more killings. I will focus on healing you or going on business trips to Orlando's father's company. I don't want to dirty my hands by taking lives anymore, Mr. W

As planned, Andrew and Marcel returned home first. They arrived at William's residence when the sun was high in the blue sky."So, Mr. Andrew, are you going to leave for your vacation today? Or will you start your journey tomorrow?"Andrew raised an eyebrow. "I haven't even decided where I'm going yet. All I have in mind right now is sleep. My body is tired. You know, Mr. William asked me to give him some strength so he can last for three days there without worrying about dropping.""Alright, but my suggestion is to use your time to explore a bit. Getting out of this house, the outside world is much more beautiful, isn't it?""Okay, you seem to be forcing me. What's up, Marcel? Are you getting tired of seeing me? Or are you annoyed because you were asked to come back and accompany me?""Of course not, Mr. Andrew. You misunderstand. I want to ask you to explore a bit because I want to come along too. Mr. William assigned me to take care of you, so wherever you go, I'll definitely be th

"What's this?"Erica was seen holding the guidebook that Andrew had shown her."I found it in this house. When I arrived, the book was already in this room. What do you think?""A guidebook? Are you saying that all of this is because of Mr. William? Is that it? I don't understand, Andrew. Don't make me guess and play these riddles. Just tell me clearly, don't be vague like this.""Okay, as I mentioned earlier, I came to this house because William wanted me to heal him. When I arrived in this room, the guidebook was already there." Andrew pointed to the small table in the room. "I asked William about it, but he didn't admit to having the book. When I opened it, it contained information about the necklace I'm wearing. When you mentioned earlier that Mom once talked about another necklace, it reminded me of all these events. Yes, I feel like all of this was intentional."Erica opened the guidebook, her eyes following every word written in it. Occasionally, she seemed astonished and took

Three men in black and white uniforms were seen running towards William's car, which was carrying Andrew, Marcel, and Erica.Everyone seemed to bow down to Marcel, William's personal assistant, who had made a name for himself. It could be said that people were just as intimidated as they were when facing William."Come on, Mr. Andrew, Miss Erica. Enjoy this beautiful resort. It's rare to have guests pampered here. You two are the most special people who have been given these facilities by Mr. William.""I'm very glad to hear that, Marcel! I won't forget all of William's kindness. It would be so sad if I remembered how this journey happened in my old age."Erica's words stopped Marcel in his tracks. "I'm touched by your words, Miss Erica. I won't forget you either. You're the sweetest girl I've ever known. You're very kind.""Okay, enough small talk. We should explore the resort now. I want to know what's here." Andrew shifted his gaze to Erica. "Okay, Miranda, I don't want people here to think something bad is happening to us. Come here."The three men arrived in front of Andrew. One of them, the most prominent one, a handsome man wearing a floral patterned shirt and cream-colored shorts."No! Stop bothering me! I don't want to be with you again!"The disheveled-haired man tried to grab the woman named Miranda's hand, but Andrew immediately intercepted him."Don't touch her." Andrew stretched out his arms to protect Miranda. "Miranda, go, find a safe place."Miranda followed Andrew's words, but the two men behind the man also moved quickly to chase her."Where are you going?"However, Andrew swiftly halted the two men, using his foot to make them fall."You bastard!" Miranda's ex-boyfriend shouted at Andrew, but then he moved to chase Miranda.Andrew clearly made a mistake; he was caught off guard. The two men he had taken down managed to get up and restrain Andrew, who was momentarily defenseless."How dare you disturb us!

The punch was about to land on Andrew's face when Marcel suddenly entered and stopped them."Stop!"Marcel's steps halted, and his expression completely changed as his gaze fell upon Miranda's ex-boyfriend, who was staring back at him."Marcel, is that you?" Miranda's ex-boyfriend was equally surprised to see Marcel.Of course, this raised a big question in Andrew's mind. 'How do these two know each other?'"What has happened, Mr. Adam? Why did you want to punch Mr. Andrew?""What? Mr. Andrew? You know this man?" Adam pointed towards Andrew, then squinted his eyes and spat suddenly at Andrew's face.Instantly, this fueled Andrew's anger to its peak. He had refrained from retaliating earlier, trying to neutralize the pain caused by Adam's attack."You bastard!" Andrew shouted loudly and quickly delivered a punch to Adam's head. The punch sounded loud, and Adam's head felt empty, the sound echoing as Andrew's hand hit it.Adam fell heavily, unconscious, just like what had happened to hi

Two cocktail glasses were served in front of Andrew and Miranda. They raised their glasses and clinked them together before taking a sip from the tall-legged glasses."This is the tastiest cocktail I've ever had," Miranda smiled as she gazed at her glass."Is that so? I'm glad to be the one who gives you an unforgettable experience. Right, you'll always remember the night you had the tastiest cocktail, won't you?" Andrew was skilled with his words, somehow managing to learn the art of charming women, making Miranda chuckle and blush."Well, it seems you're right. So, before I tell my story, what brought you to this resort? I mean, are you on a business trip or just here to relax?""Do you see me as a pathetic man chasing after a woman? Or as a useless and weak man?"Miranda shook her head, placing her glass on the bar table. "Of course not, why would you say that?""No, I just have trust issues with everyone who meets me. I'm always seen as a weak and helpless man. But I can't blame t

The first thing Jerome felt was pain.A deep, throbbing ache pulsing through his ribs, jaw, and neck. His entire body screamed like he’d been hit by a truck, then thrown into another. His eyes opened slowly, vision swimming, light stinging. He wasn’t on the ground anymore. He was lying on a couch. A small, warm apartment — pale green walls, faint vanilla scent in the air, and a dim lamp glowing near a stack of books. Not his house. Not his room. And most importantly… not alone.“Hey.”Margareth’s voice cut through the haze. She was sitting in a worn armchair across the room, legs tucked beneath her, eyes red and tired, but focused entirely on him.Jerome tried to sit up, but pain flared in his side.“Easy,” she said, standing quickly. “You hit your head. Or something hit it for you.”He winced as she helped him lean back against the cushions.“What... happened?” he asked, voice raspy.“I found you. In the alley behind those apartments near 8th Street. You were unconscious. Bleeding. A

The sun set early that evening, swallowed quickly by the thick layer of gray clouds hanging low over the city. Wind whipped through the narrow streets of Jerome’s neighborhood, making the street signs rattle and the trees moan in warning. It wasn’t the kind of night you wanted to be outside in.And yet, Jerome was walking straight into it.He hadn’t meant to. Originally, he was just going to clear his head with a short walk — five blocks, tops — but something pulled at him. A weight in his chest that refused to be shaken unless he moved his legs, put some distance between himself and that suffocating house. He passed shuttered shops, puddles reflecting broken neon, and a row of parked cars lined like teeth. And the further he walked, the more certain he became. He wasn’t alone. At first, it was just a feeling. A flicker at the edge of his vision. The sound of an extra footstep when his own had stopped. But then he heard it.Soft. Steady. Calculated.A second set of footsteps.Jerome k

Tampa’s rain had stopped, but the clouds refused to leave.Jerome walked along the edge of the campus field, his hands shoved into the pockets of a black windbreaker that barely shielded him from the breeze. There was an eerie kind of silence in the air, the kind that made him glance over his shoulder every few steps — not because he was paranoid, but because something told him he had every reason to be.The necklace had been dormant all day.He hadn’t worn it. He’d left it in his backpack, zipped in the inner pouch, wrapped in an old T-shirt like a makeshift sarcophagus. But even in there, it pulsed. It was like hiding a heartbeat — faint but impossible to ignore.Jerome sat at the edge of the bleachers and looked toward the tall iron fence that separated the campus from the back alley. That’s when he saw him.A man. Dressed in all black. Standing completely still on the other side of the fence. He wasn’t doing anything — just watching.Jerome’s first instinct was to pretend he hadn’

The morning after felt like a hangover. Not the kind brought on by alcohol, but the raw, nauseating fog of a night spent screaming at voices only he could hear.Jerome stared at the ceiling. He hadn’t moved in over an hour. The necklace was still under his bed, where he’d tossed it the night before, and for the first time since receiving it, he refused to wear it.The calm in the house was deceptive. His mother was humming in the kitchen — a soft, nostalgic tune, something old-fashioned that she used to sing when he was younger, when things still made sense. Back when their world, however small and crumbling, had some rhythm to it.Now, it was chaos wrapped in glass smiles.Jerome finally stood and trudged to the bathroom. His reflection looked worse than he expected. His face was pale, his eyes hollow, and there was a faint redness around his pupils. He splashed cold water on his face and stared at himself again. No change. It wasn’t just exhaustion. It was... residue. The kind left

Later that night, the rain returned.Tampa streets shimmered under the yellow streetlights, coated in a thin sheen of water. Jerome walked alone down the cracked sidewalk, hands deep in his hoodie pockets, head bowed against the wind.He didn’t even remember how he left campus—only that Margareth had let him go after promising to “talk again tomorrow.” Whatever that meant. His thoughts had been looping all afternoon: the way his hand moved on its own, the blank, terrified look on Ryan’s face, and most of all—the voice. That voice. He stopped walking and leaned against a telephone pole, letting the cold seep into his back. His chest felt tight again, but not from asthma.“Why me?” he murmured. The necklace didn’t answer. But it pulsed. Softly. Once. That was worse.Jerome arrived at the tiny, peeling house he called home and stood in front of the door for a long moment, staring. He hated walking into that place now. His gaze was dull, and his eyes looked like they hadn’t seen sleep in days.Which was true. The necklace around his neck now felt like metal fused to his bones. Not painful, but... intrusive. As if the thing refused to be forgotten, even for a second.Margareth had glanced at him several times throughout the morning. They were in the same class for modern literature. Her seat was just one row away, and every few minutes she turned her head, trying to read the expression usually hidden behind his glasses.“Jerome,” she called softly after class ended. He turned to her. His face remained blank.“Are you okay? You look like... like you’ve been holding your brea

Jerome woke up gasping for air. Sweat drenched his face and body, causing the worn-out T-shirt clinging to his skin to feel like a second, suffocating layer. His eyes darted wildly around the room, struggling to anchor himself—was he still in the real world, or had the nightmare that ensnared him dragged him somewhere far worse? In the darkness of his room, one thing stood out: a faint gleam—the blue pendant hanging around his neck. It shimmered softly, almost as if it were breathing with him, pulsing with a life of its own.Jerome lifted a trembling hand and touched the pendant carefully. It was warm against his fingertips, beating gently like a slow, steady heart. As his skin brushed the stone, a whisper rose... or perhaps it was just the exhausted echo of his own mind."You chose me..."Jerome froze. The deep, resonant voice hadn't come from the room. It had cut straight through his thoughts, slicing into his mind with a terrifying calmness.Swallowing hard, Jerome shook off the da

Sweat, which had been absent, now surged all over his body, but the tension eased slightly when he heard his mother's voice."Jerome, are you home?" Meghan, his mother, called out.Jerome quickly hid the necklace he was wearing under his shirt and hurried to open the door for Meghan. His eyes narrowed as he glanced out the window, seeing a man kissing Meghan's neck affectionately."My son! Where have you been, sleeping?" Meghan asked with a broad smile."Who is this?"
