Elena was still ranting about the invitation list when the front door burst open with such force that it slammed against the wall. Derek Manning rushed into the house, his face flushed with excitement and superiority.

"Mrs. Fletcher!" Derek called out breathlessly. "Have you seen the names that the mayor released?"

Elena turned toward him with desperate hope. "Derek! Please tell me you have good news."

"Well," Derek said with obvious satisfaction, "my family's name is on the list. The Manning family has been invited to the mayor's exclusive ceremony."

The room fell silent as his words sank in.

"But unfortunately," Derek continued, shaking his head with mock sympathy, "the Fletcher family name is nowhere to be found."

Elena's face crumpled with disappointment and rage.

"It's because of the useless son-in-law you have," Derek said, casting a disdainful look in my direction. "If Sarah had married me instead of this worthless peasant, your family name would definitely be on that list."
