The gunshot echoed through the tunnel.

Jonathan's hand slipped.

Benedict caught his wrist before he fell.

“Hold on!”

Damian was still gripping Benedict's other arm.

Daniel had one hand against the broken edge of the dock.

Water rushed beneath them.

Another shot struck the concrete.

“Get up!” Benedict shouted.

Daniel pulled himself onto the remaining platform.

Then he reached for Damian.

Together, they dragged Benedict upward.

Jonathan collapsed beside them.

Blood spread across his shoulder.

Damian looked at him.

“You've been shot.”

Jonathan gritted his teeth.

“I'm aware.”

Benedict looked toward the darkness.

Magnus was gone.

“Where did he go?”

Daniel pointed toward the far end of the tunnel.

“He won't stay.”

“Then we move.”

Jonathan struggled to stand.

Damian helped him.

“You can't walk.”

“I can.”

“You're bleeding.”

“I've been worse.”

Benedict looked at Daniel.

“You said there's another entrance.”

Daniel nodded.

“Under the water.”

Damian stared at him.

“You want us to swim through that?”

“Unless you'd rather wait for Magnus.”

Damian looked toward the darkness.

“Lead the way.”

Daniel moved to the edge.

Before jumping, he looked at Benedict.

“You trust me?”

Benedict didn't hesitate.

“You're my brother.”

Daniel's expression shifted.

For a moment, the anger disappeared.

Then he jumped.

Benedict followed.

Damian went next.

Jonathan hesitated.

“You coming?”

Jonathan looked at the blood on his hand.

“Apparently.”

He jumped.

The tunnel beneath the river was colder than Benedict expected.

Daniel moved ahead, following a narrow passage beneath the water.

Benedict kept him in sight.

For the first time, the two brothers were moving together.

Not as strangers.

Not as names in an old document.

As family.

They surfaced inside a maintenance chamber.

Daniel pulled himself onto the concrete floor.

Benedict followed.

Damian climbed out next.

Jonathan emerged last, breathing heavily.

Daniel looked around.

“We're safe.”

Damian laughed bitterly.

“That's becoming a dangerous word.”

Benedict examined Jonathan's shoulder.

“The bullet is still inside.”

Jonathan nodded.

“I know.”

“We need a doctor.”

“No hospitals.”

Damian frowned.

“Why?”

“Magnus has people everywhere.”

Benedict looked at Daniel.

“You've been hiding for years.”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

Daniel looked away.

“Different places.”

“Who protected you?”

Daniel hesitated.

“A woman.”

“The woman Jonathan mentioned?”

Daniel nodded.

“She called herself Mara.”

Benedict's eyes narrowed.

“Is she the woman who trained the second Architect?”

“I don't know.”

“You must know something.”

Daniel looked at him.

“She knew our mother.”

Benedict went still.

“How?”

“She was there the night we were separated.”

Damian stepped closer.

“You remember her?”

Daniel nodded.

“She carried me out of the manor.”

Benedict stared at him.

“She saved you?”

“Yes.”

“Then why didn't she save me?”

Daniel looked at him.

“Because you were already gone.”

Silence.

Benedict looked down.

A memory returned.

Rain.

A carriage.

Evelyn's hand.

A door closing.

Then another voice.

A man's voice.

Take the other child.

Benedict's head snapped up.

“Who?”

Daniel frowned.

“What?”

“The man who took me.”

“I don't know.”

Benedict closed his eyes.

The memory was disappearing again.

But one thing remained.

A ring.

A dark stone set into silver.

He had seen it before.

On his grandfather's hand.

Benedict opened his eyes.

“My grandfather was there.”

Daniel nodded slowly.

“Yes.”

Damian looked between them.

“Then he knew exactly what happened.”

“He knew,” Benedict said.

“And he allowed it.”

“Yes.”

Jonathan leaned against the wall.

“There's something you need to understand.”

Everyone turned.

Jonathan took a painful breath.

“Magnus isn't trying to recover the old succession.”

Benedict frowned.

“What is he trying to do?”

“Destroy it.”

Damian stared.

“Why would he destroy something he could control?”

“Because he can't control the original structure.”

Benedict's eyes narrowed.

“Who can?”

Jonathan looked at him.

“The Architect.”

Silence.

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

Jonathan looked at him.

“You know I'm right.”

Daniel's expression hardened.

“Mara said the Architect was dead.”

“Maybe she lied.”

“No.”

Daniel stood.

“Mara never lied to me.”

Benedict looked at him.

“Then why did she disappear?”

Daniel didn't answer.

Jonathan did.

“Because Magnus found her.”

Daniel's face changed.

“You're lying.”

“I wish I were.”

Daniel stepped toward him.

“What happened?”

Jonathan met his eyes.

“She was taken.”

“Alive?”

Jonathan hesitated.

“I don't know.”

Daniel's fists tightened.

Benedict stepped between them.

“Enough.”

Daniel looked at him.

Benedict's voice was firm.

“We don't know who is telling the truth yet.”

Jonathan looked at Benedict.

“Then we need to find the records.”

“What records?”

“The original Architect records.”

Damian frowned.

“We already found the vault.”

“The vault contained copies.”

Benedict's eyes narrowed.

“Where are the originals?”

Jonathan looked at Daniel.

Daniel answered.

“Mara knew.”

Benedict understood.

“So we find Mara.”

Jonathan nodded.

“If she's alive.”

Damian looked at his phone.

No signal.

Then suddenly it vibrated.

Everyone froze.

A message appeared.

From an unknown number.

YOU FOUND YOUR BROTHER.

Benedict stared.

Another message appeared.

NOW FIND THE WOMAN WHO SAVED HIM.

Then a third.

SHE HAS THE NAME YOU WERE NEVER SUPPOSED TO KNOW.

Daniel took the phone from Damian.

His face went pale.

“What name?”

Benedict looked at him.

Daniel slowly turned the screen toward him.

The final message appeared.

THE NAME OF THE FIRST ARCHITECT.

Benedict stared at the words.

Then another message arrived.

This one contained an address.

Aurelia City's old botanical district.

Daniel whispered,

“Mara's house.”

Benedict looked at Jonathan.

“Can you get us there?”

Jonathan nodded.

“Yes.”

Damian looked at Benedict.

“What if it's a trap?”

Benedict looked toward the tunnel behind them.

“Everything we've found has been a trap.”

He turned toward the exit.

“But this time, the trap might lead us to the truth.”

Daniel followed.

For the first time in twenty-five years, the two brothers walked side by side.

Neither noticed the small camera hidden above the maintenance door.

Its red light blinked once.

Then disappeared.

Far away, Magnus watched the feed.

He smiled.

“Good.”

A man standing behind him asked,

“Should we stop them?”

Magnus shook his head.

“No.”

“Why?”

Magnus looked at the screen.

“Because they're going exactly where I need them to go.”

The old botanical district was nearly empty by the time they arrived.

Damian stopped the car two streets away from Mara's address.

“No farther.”

Jonathan looked at him.

“Why?”

“If Magnus is watching, he'll expect a direct approach.”

Benedict nodded.

“Then we walk.”

Daniel opened the door.

Benedict stopped him.

“Stay close.”

Daniel gave him a faint smile.

“You've been saying that since the tunnel.”

“And you're still alive.”

“Fair enough.”

They moved through the narrow street.

Mara's house stood at the end of a dead road.

It was small.

Old.

Nothing about it suggested that someone connected to the Ashcroft succession had ever lived there.

Daniel stopped at the gate.

“She used to keep the light on.”

Benedict looked at the dark windows.

“Maybe she knew we were coming.”

Damian noticed the front door.

It wasn't locked.

He drew back.

“That's not a good sign.”

Benedict entered first.

The house was silent.

No furniture had been disturbed.

No broken windows.

No obvious struggle.

But everything looked abandoned.

Daniel whispered,

“She left in a hurry.”

Benedict noticed a photograph on the wall.

Two women stood beside a younger Evelyn.

One was Mara.

The other was unfamiliar.

He removed the photograph.

“Who is she?”

Daniel shook his head.

“I've never seen her.”

Jonathan stepped closer.

Then stopped.

“I have.”

Everyone turned.

“Who?”

Jonathan pointed to the woman.

“She was one of the people who worked for your grandfather.”

Damian frowned.

“Her name?”

“Clara Vale.”

Benedict's expression tightened.

“Where is she now?”

Jonathan shook his head.

“Dead.”

Daniel looked at him.

“When?”

“Twenty-five years ago.”

Benedict looked back at the photograph.

Another piece of the past.

Another person who had disappeared at the same time.

Then Damian noticed something beneath the frame.

A small envelope.

He picked it up.

It had Benedict's name on it.

Benedict opened it.

Inside was a single sentence.

If you are reading this, Mara failed to keep you away.

Daniel stepped closer.

“What else?”

Benedict turned the page.

There was a second line.

Do not trust anyone who tells you the Architect was one person.

Damian frowned.

“So the Architect really was a position.”

Benedict nodded.

“That's what we've been told.”

Daniel pointed at the bottom of the page.

“There.”

A symbol had been drawn beneath the message.

The same symbol from the vault.

But beside it was another mark.

A second circle.

Benedict stared.

“What is that?”

Daniel shook his head.

“Mara never showed me that.”

Jonathan suddenly looked uneasy.

“I know it.”

Damian turned.

“How?”

Jonathan didn't answer.

Benedict stepped toward him.

“Jonathan.”

He finally spoke.

“It belonged to the first succession.”

Damian's eyes narrowed.

“What does it mean?”

Jonathan looked at Benedict.

“It means the Architect wasn't the person who controlled the inheritance.”

“Then who did?”

Jonathan hesitated.

“The Witness.”

Silence.

Benedict frowned.

“What Witness?”

“The person who witnessed the original succession and had authority to verify it.”

Damian stared at the symbol.

“So there were three positions.”

“Architect.”

“Witness.”

“And heir,” Benedict finished.

Jonathan nodded.

Daniel looked at Benedict.

“Then we haven't been searching for one person.”

“No.”

Benedict folded the letter.

“We've been searching for a system.”

A sound came from upstairs.

Everyone froze.

Damian whispered,

“Someone's here.”

Benedict motioned for them to stay back.

He climbed the stairs.

The bedroom door stood open.

Inside was a desk.

A chair.

And an old tape recorder.

Benedict approached it.

A red light was blinking.

He pressed play.

Static filled the room.

Then a woman's voice.

Mara.

“If you're hearing this, Benedict, I failed.”

Daniel's face tightened.

Her voice continued.

“Your mother believed the succession could protect both children.”

A pause.

“She was wrong.”

Benedict stared at the recorder.

“The system was never designed to protect the children from the family.”

Another pause.

“It was designed to protect the family from the children.”

Damian looked at Benedict.

Mara continued.

“Your grandfather feared what would happen if both bloodlines were united.”

Benedict's expression hardened.

“So he separated them.”

“Yes.”

“He changed their identities.”

“Yes.”

“And he destroyed the original succession.”

“No.”

Mara's voice became quieter.

“He hid it.”

The recording clicked.

Then her final words came.

“Find the Witness.”

The tape stopped.

Daniel stared at the recorder.

“That's it?”

Benedict looked at him.

“No.”

He turned the recorder over.

Something had been taped beneath it.

A small key.

And attached to the key was a handwritten label.

ASHCROFT MANOR — EAST WING.

Damian's expression changed.

“We were just there.”

Benedict nodded.

“But we never searched the east wing.”

Jonathan stepped back.

“We shouldn't go there.”

Benedict looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because Magnus knows we're looking.”

“That doesn't mean we stop.”

Jonathan's face tightened.

“You don't understand.”

“Then explain.”

Jonathan hesitated.

“The east wing is where your grandfather kept people who knew too much.”

Daniel stared at him.

“People?”

Jonathan nodded.

“Witnesses.”

Silence.

Benedict looked at the key.

Then toward the window.

“We're going back.”

Damian nodded.

“But this time, we don't tell anyone.”

Daniel looked at Benedict.

“Not even Eleanor?”

“Not yet.”

Jonathan frowned.

“Why?”

Benedict's expression hardened.

“Because someone inside the family has been giving Magnus information.”

Damian looked at him.

“You think it's my mother?”

“No.”

“Then who?”

Benedict looked toward Jonathan.

“I don't know.”

Jonathan went still.

Benedict continued,

“And until we know, nobody gets the whole truth.”

They left Mara's house through the rear entrance.

None of them noticed the figure watching from across the street.

The figure lifted a phone.

“They found the key.”

A voice answered.

“Good.”

“What should I do?”

“Nothing.”

“Nothing?”

“Let them return to the manor.”

A pause.

Then the voice added,

“The Witness has been waiting twenty-five years.”

The call ended.

Benedict stopped at the end of the street.

He looked back at Mara's dark house.

For the first time, he understood something.

The truth wasn't buried.

It had been guarded.

And someone had been waiting for him to come looking.
