Benedict woke before sunrise.

For several seconds, he stared at the unfamiliar ceiling above him.

Then reality returned.

The hotel room.

The single suitcase.

The life outside Ashcroft Manor.

He sat on the edge of the bed and looked toward the small table beside the window.

The photograph from Room 17 was still there.

A young woman.

A little boy.

And one word written on the back.

Ben.

Benedict picked it up.

The moment his fingers touched the photograph, a faint ache returned behind his eyes.

A woman's voice.

A birthday song.

A child's laughter.

Then darkness.

He closed his eyes.

"Who were you?"

He wasn't sure whether he was asking about the woman...

Or the boy.

His phone rang.

Damian.

Benedict answered.

"Are you all right?"

"I'm fine."

"You disappeared after we left Room 17."

"I needed time to think."

Damian hesitated.

"I found something else."

Benedict straightened.

"What?"

"The index of the room's contents is missing."

Benedict's expression hardened.

"Are you sure?"

"I checked twice."

"Who else knew about the room?"

"No one."

Benedict looked at the photograph.

"Don't tell Father."

"Why?"

"Because we don't know who else is watching."

Damian was silent for a moment.

"All right."

"And Damian?"

"Yes?"

"Be careful."

"I will."

The call ended.

Benedict remained still.

Someone had entered Room 17.

Someone had removed the index.

And someone had already begun leaving warnings for him.

He had spent years protecting the Ashcrofts.

Now...

He needed to understand what he was protecting them from.

By eight o'clock, Benedict was sitting across from Adrian Cole.

The folder between them carried one name.

Vandross Capital.

Adrian watched him carefully.

"You've changed your mind."

"I'm not accepting their offer."

"Then why are you here?"

"I want to understand why they want me."

Adrian opened the folder.

"Three years ago, Vandross began acquiring companies connected to Ashcroft Group."

Benedict studied the documents.

"How many?"

"Seven."

"That's too deliberate."

"I thought so too."

Adrian handed him another page.

A handwritten instruction.

Offer Benedict a position.

Benedict stared at it.

"When did you receive this?"

"Two weeks ago."

"Before I left Ashcroft."

"Yes."

Benedict slowly looked up.

"Then someone expected me to leave."

Adrian didn't answer.

Benedict turned another page.

A photograph showed a group of executives at a private meeting.

One man wore a silver ring.

A small circle crossed by a single line.

Benedict's expression changed.

"Where was this taken?"

"Vandross headquarters."

"When?"

"Last month."

"Who is the man?"

"We're still trying to identify him."

Benedict studied the photograph.

Something was unsettling about the man's face.

Not because he recognized him.

Because he felt as though he should.

"Can you find him?"

Adrian nodded.

"I'll try."

Benedict closed the folder.

"Don't contact him."

"Why?"

"Because if he's connected to whoever is watching me, he'll know we're investigating."

Adrian smiled faintly.

"You're already thinking like an investigator."

"No."

Benedict stood.

"I'm thinking like someone who doesn't want to become a target."

At Ashcroft Group...

Damian sat in Benedict's former office.

A contract lay before him.

He had reviewed it three times.

The western division wanted to terminate its relationship with Ashcroft Group.

The reason was simple.

They trusted Benedict.

Damian looked toward the empty chair opposite his desk.

He finally understood something he had never fully appreciated.

Benedict hadn't simply worked for the family.

He had built relationships that the company had taken for granted.

The door opened.

The Chief Financial Officer entered.

"They've given us forty-eight hours."

"To replace the contract?"

"To convince them to stay."

Damian nodded.

"Then I'll handle it."

The CFO hesitated.

"Mr. Ashcroft..."

"What?"

"They specifically asked whether Benedict could return as a consultant."

Damian's expression tightened.

"He's not coming back."

The CFO nodded and left.

Damian leaned back.

He wanted to believe those words.

But he wasn't certain anymore.

At Ashcroft Manor...

Eleanor sat alone in the library.

The old letters lay across the table.

She had spent the morning comparing them with Victor's genuine handwriting.

The answer was becoming impossible to ignore.

They were fake.

Someone had copied Victor's handwriting and used it to destroy what they had once shared.

Eleanor picked up one of the oldest letters.

A memory surfaced.

She and Victor were young.

They had believed they were in love.

Then the letters had arrived.

Cruel words.

Accusations.

Promises they had never made.

She had believed them.

So had Victor.

And whatever love had existed between them had slowly turned into resentment.

Eleanor's eyes filled with tears.

"Who did this to us?"

A quiet voice answered from the doorway.

"Perhaps some things are better left in the past."

Eleanor looked up.

Clara stood there.

For years, Eleanor had trusted her completely.

Now...

Something about those words made her uneasy.

"Perhaps," Eleanor replied.

She carefully gathered the letters.

"But I'm beginning to think the past is the one thing we should never stop questioning."

Clara's expression remained calm.

"Of course, Madam."

She left.

Eleanor watched the door close.

Then looked down at the letters.

For the first time...

She wondered whether the person who had destroyed her relationship with Victor had also been involved in something far more dangerous.

That evening...

Benedict returned to his hotel.

He unlocked the door.

Then stopped.

His suitcase was open.

He was certain he had closed it.

Nothing appeared missing.

But something had been placed on top of his clothes.

A photograph.

Ashcroft Manor.

The image had been taken from outside the gates.

Benedict recognized himself.

He was standing there with his suitcase on the day he left.

His face tightened.

Someone had been watching him.

He turned the photograph over.

Five words were written across the back.

You should have stayed.

Benedict stared at the message.

Then his phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

"Who is this?"

A man's voice replied.

"You've started asking questions."

Benedict's expression hardened.

"That's my business."

A quiet laugh.

"No."

The voice became colder.

"That's exactly what makes it dangerous."

The call ended.

Benedict slowly lowered the phone.

He looked at the photograph again.

Then toward the window.

The city stretched beneath him.

For the first time since leaving Ashcroft Manor...

He understood something.

He hadn't escaped the past.

He had simply walked far enough away for it to finally find him.

Benedict remained beside the window.

The city lights flickered below him.

He looked at the photograph again.

You should have stayed.

Whoever had taken it had been close enough to watch him leave Ashcroft Manor.

Close enough to know about his suitcase.

And close enough to find him afterward.

Benedict placed the photograph beside the documents from Room 17.

He refused to panic.

Fear made people careless.

He had learned that lesson years ago.

His phone rang again.

This time...

It was Eleanor.

"Mother."

Her voice was unusually quiet.

"Are you safe?"

Benedict looked at the photograph.

"Yes."

"Are you certain?"

He hesitated.

"Why are you asking?"

Eleanor took a breath.

"Someone came to the manor looking for you."

Benedict's expression hardened.

"Who?"

"I don't know. They asked about your old room."

"Did you tell them anything?"

"No."

"Good."

Silence followed.

Then Eleanor whispered,

"Please be careful."

"I will."

"Benedict..."

"Yes?"

"I don't think your leaving was as simple as we thought."

His eyes narrowed.

"What do you mean?"

"I don't know yet."

She paused.

"But I'm going to find out."

The call ended.

Benedict stared at the phone.

For the first time...

Eleanor was asking questions too.

The following morning, Benedict returned to Cole Strategic Advisory.

Adrian was waiting.

"I assume you changed your mind."

"I'm investigating Vandross."

Adrian raised an eyebrow.

"You're certain?"

"Yes."

He placed the photograph on the desk.

"Someone is watching me."

Adrian studied it.

"Then this has become more serious."

"It already was."

Adrian nodded.

"I know someone who can help."

A woman entered the office.

She carried a tablet and several files.

"Mara Bennett."

Benedict stood.

"Benedict."

Mara sat across from him.

"I specialize in corporate forensic research."

"Then tell me what you found."

She opened her tablet.

"Three shell companies connected to Vandross."

Benedict studied the information.

"Who owns them?"

"Different directors. Different addresses."

"And the money?"

"That is where they connect."

She showed him the transactions.

The same financial institution appeared repeatedly.

Benedict recognized it.

"Ashcroft's banking network."

Mara nodded.

"Exactly."

Benedict leaned back.

"How far back?"

"Almost fifteen years."

His expression changed.

Fifteen years.

Long before his recent problems.

Long before Damian's promotion.

Long before anyone had decided Benedict was no longer needed.

Someone had been preparing something for a very long time.

"Can you trace the original account?"

"I'm trying."

"Keep trying."

Mara studied him.

"You really want to know what this is about."

Benedict looked at the photograph.

"I've spent my life protecting people who never told me the truth."

He folded the photograph.

"I'm done accepting unanswered questions."

That afternoon...

Damian stood alone in Benedict's former office.

He opened the top drawer.

Inside was a handwritten note Benedict had once left for him.

Never decide because you're afraid of disappointing someone. Make it because you believe it's right.

Damian read it twice.

Then smiled sadly.

A knock sounded.

The Chief Financial Officer entered.

"The western client has made a decision."

Damian looked up.

"What did they say?"

"They're giving us another forty-eight hours."

"Why?"

"They want Benedict to return."

Damian lowered his eyes.

"They won't get him."

The CFO nodded.

After he left...

Damian looked at Benedict's empty chair.

"You'd better be doing something important," he whispered.

That night...

Benedict returned to his hotel.

He opened the door.

Nothing appeared unusual.

He entered.

Then stopped.

The envelope from Room 17 was lying on his bed.

He had left it locked inside his suitcase.

He approached slowly.

The symbol was still visible.

His pulse quickened.

He opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

A young woman stood beside a little boy.

Benedict stared at the image.

Something inside him shifted.

A warm room.

A birthday cake.

A woman's arms around him.

Then her voice.

"Ben..."

Benedict dropped the photograph.

He pressed his fingers against his temple.

Another fragment surfaced.

A door.

Someone shouting.

A man's voice.

"Take him away."

Benedict opened his eyes.

His breathing was heavy.

The memory vanished.

But the feeling remained.

Fear.

Confusion.

And the certainty that the little boy in the photograph mattered.

His phone vibrated.

A message appeared.

Stop searching.

Another followed.

Some memories were buried for your protection.

Benedict stared at the screen.

Then looked at the photograph.

Perhaps someone believed the truth would destroy him.

Perhaps they were right.

But after a lifetime of being told only what others wanted him to know...

Benedict had made his decision.

He picked up the photograph.

"I'll find the truth."

Outside the hotel...

A black sedan waited beneath the streetlight.

Inside, a man lowered his phone.

"He found the photograph."

A voice answered.

"Then it's begun."

"Should we stop him?"

"No."

A pause.

"Let him search."

The man's expression changed.

"Why?"

"Because every answer he finds..."

The voice became colder.

"...will lead him closer to us."

The call ended.

Benedict stood alone inside his room, unaware that his first step toward the truth had already been noticed.

And somewhere in the city...

Someone was waiting for him to take the second.
