"Let Chloe Pierce inherit my family's billions? Haha, no need. She is not worthy!" Ethan said as he hung up the phone. He looked up at the high-end VIP suite on the top floor, shaking his head. He was still in absolute disbelief not wanting to believe the horrifying truth.

His wife hadn't married him out of some secret, rebellious love but had chosen him... a penniless, statusless man... simply because his blood type and health profile made him the perfect, disposable bio-container to harvest a kidney for her secret billionaire lover.

For three years, he had been living a lie, thinking his devotion mattered.

'Chloe Pierce... Julian Montgomery... you truly are a pair of vicious beasts!' Ethan thought, his jaw clenching as he walked away from the medical resort.

At eight o'clock that evening, Ethan returned to the modest residential apartment he shared with Chloe. He didn't want to cause a scene in public yet; he needed to gather his personal belongings and make a clean break.

The moment he pushed the door open, he saw Chloe sitting on the sofa. Surprisingly, she had ordered a table full of expensive takeout food from a high-end restaurant. In the past three years, Ethan had cooked every single meal. Chloe never even touched a spatula.

Chloe looked up, her expression completely recovered from the afternoon's shock. She crossed her legs and said indifferently, "You're finally back? Wash your hands and come eat. I ordered your favorite seafood. Consider it a reward."

Ethan didn't change into his slippers. He walked straight toward his small, separate bedroom. "No need. I’m just back to pack my things and leave this monstrous household."

Chloe’s expression turned aggressive. She leaped up, locking her elbows onto her waistline. "What is this ridiculous performance, Ethan? Are you seriously throwing a childish tantrum over a completely minor situation?"

Ethan halted, throwing a freezing glare back at her. "Minor? You fabricated medical files, conned me into believing your father was on his deathbed, and had me carved open on an operating table just to hand my internal organ to your wealthy boy toy. You call that minor?!"

Chloe completely abandoned any pretense of shame. Realizing Ethan already knew the full story, she let out an arrogant, dismissive scoff.

"So what if that happened? Are you expecting a formal apology? Let's face the facts, Ethan. You've been a freeloading nobody bleeding my family dry for thirty-six months. Even if I used a piece of your body to advance the interests of an actual high-society man, your only job is to swallow your pride and deal with it!"

Ethan slammed his luggage lid shut, securing the latches with immense force.

"Deal with it? I have tolerated your toxic household for three miserable years! I catered to your every whim like a mindless servant, yet I couldn't even hold your hand because you claimed your traditional values were sacred. Meanwhile, you're lounging in luxury robes and hand-feeding fruit to Julian Montgomery!"

Ethan's voice was filled with rage as he let out years of suppressed rage. "Your mother, Victoria, treated me like a stray animal and subjected me to non-stop public degradation, yet I stayed quiet. Your cousin wrecked my delivery vehicle through his own stupidity, and your family forced me to take the blame. I literally cracked my ribs doing heavy construction labor for your father's business, and I had to fund my own recovery using my delivery wages! I am completely done playing this game. Chloe, our marriage is over. Let's file the papers."

Chloe froze momentarily at the word 'divorce,' but her shock instantly turned into a mocking laugh.

"A divorce? Did the anesthesia completely wipe out your remaining brain cells? Let me make reality very clear to you. The second you walk out that door, your access to a high-end apartment and the car my family paid for vanishes. You’ll be begging for change on the sidewalks, sleeping in cardboard boxes, and eating scraps out of dumpsters!"

Ethan looked at her with disgust. "A tiny apartment and a cheap, second-hand car? Keep your garbage. I'll see you at the legal office first thing tomorrow morning."

"Tomorrow is completely out of the question," Chloe barked back defensively. "Tomorrow morning at ten o'clock is the Pierce Group's Annual Corporate Gala Event. The entire family tree, our major shareholders, and international venture capitalists are coming together at the headquarters to authorize a massive funding merger. Also, a divorce needs approval from my family board."

"Fine," Ethan replied as he lifted his suitcase. "Bring it up with your money-hungry relatives immediately. I'll be waiting for the notification."

As Ethan crossed the threshold into the night, He heard Chloe yell from the room. "Whatever. Run away then, you pathetic, ungrateful parasite! Just remember my words! Within seventy-two hours, the brutal reality of starvation will have you crawling back on your knees, sobbing and begging me for a second chance!"

Ethan didn't bother turning his head. A multi-trillionaire heir kneeling to a family of low-level local millionaires? The woman was completely delusional.

"I have heard so much about you lately. Your name is everywhere."In reality, Thomas was no old man, he was in his middle middle age. "Is it?""Everywhere, your name is in the newspapers, business circles. They say you have been busy, and I can see that too."Ethan chuckled. "Just a little.""A little?" Thomas said. "Ethan, I know you. I don't believe that. That is what worries me." “Thomas's voice grew gentle. "You have only just finished your three-year family test. You have barely had time to rest, and now you are running Vanguard Apex, one of the biggest companies in the world.""It is a lot," Ethan admitted."It is too much. I do not want you to push yourself too hard.""I am not.""You are, my boy. I can hear it in your voice." Thomas sighed. "You are tired, I think you should let the local manag

  • CHAPTER 36 : Played.

Ethan couldn't believe his ears, this was done so smartly. He didn't need a soothsayer to know that this was not done by the Pierce family, of course they were not smart enough to pull something like this off.And also, they stood to gain nothing from this, if they were the ones behind it, they would have never refunded the three hundred million dollars, not at a time where they could do a lot with such an amount of money. "And now the money has been returned.""Yes."Ethan's eyes narrowed. "Who returned it?""That's what I'm trying to establish."He walked back to his desk and picked up the acquisition agreement. The contract contained the expected clauses covering payment, delivery, ownership, and the transfer of the relevant documents. On paper, the deal looked legitimate. The corporate entities involved had been registered, the payment had passed through the appropriate channels, and the documents had appeared valid.Someone had taken considerable care to make the transaction lo

Something to avoid.""Even small firms?""Even small firms."Chloe stared at the floor. She had known it, she had felt it every time a door closed in her face. But hearing her mother say it out loud made it worse. They were not just poor, they were untouchable, the whole business world had turned its back on them."Your grandmother is not giving up," Victoria said. "But I can see it wearing on her. She does not sleep, she hardly eats. The sound of phone ringing could be heard in the dark. Chloe groaned. She rolled over in bed and reached for it with a heavy hand. Her eyes were swollen, her head ached. She had barely slept properly in days. She picked up the phone without looking at the screen."Hello?""Chloe," a voice came, "It's me. I am outside your door."Chloe frowned. She sat up slowly and checked the screen."Mom? What time is it?""I am sorry. I know it is late. Please open the door."Chloe let out a tired breath. She pushed the blanket aside and stood up. The floor was cold, she walked across the small bedroom, through the narrow living room, and unlocked the front door. She had left her old flashy house. The one where she and Ethan once lived and rented this one as she was no longer able to pay the rent which unfortunately was due a few days back. Victoria stood on the step. Her hair was messy, she wore a plain coat over a faded dress, her face was pale, for a moment, Chloe barely recognized her mother
