Water dripped from the moldering rafters of the subterranean hideout, each heavy splash echoing through the dark like a slow, rhythmic countdown. The air in the cellar tasted of rot, damp plaster, and the sharp, metallic tang of blood. On a thin, grease-stained mattress in the corner, Nara Velika gasped for breath, her fingers clawing at the collar of her frayed tunic.

Beside her, the pale blue holographic projection of her Free System—the bare-minimum utility suite provided to all registered commoners—sputtered violently. Its light, usually a reassuring sky-blue, flickered like a dying candle, turning a sickly, ash-gray.

"Reza..." Nara choked out, her voice barely a whisper. "I can't... I can't feel it anymore. The system is... it's going dark."

"Hey, look at me. Stay with me, okay?" Reza Arvand lunged forward, catching his sister as her chest convulsed. Her eyes rolled back, showing only the whites, and her small frame went terrifyingly rigid.

Reza’s heart hammered against his ribs like a trapped bird. He pressed his palm against her forehead; it was burning hot, yet her skin was clammy and pale. The gray holographic screen of her Free System fractured, shattering into a dozen useless, glittering pixels before dissolving into the damp air. Her vital signs had plummeted below the threshold of the system’s basic medical buffer. The Free System had abandoned her.

"No, no, no! Don't do this to me!" Reza yelled, frantically shaking her shoulders. "Nara! Wake up!"

In the silence that followed her fading pulse, a sudden, violent heat bloomed in the center of the cellar. The air grew heavy, smelling of ozone and scorched copper.

Before Reza’s eyes, a jagged, blood-red holographic window burst into existence. It didn't possess the soft, synthesized hum of the Free System. Instead, it tore through the dim light with a high-pitched screech, like metal scraping against stone. The borders of the UI pulsed with a predatory, aggressive crimson light.

[CRIMSON USURY SYSTEM: ACTIVATED.]

Reza stared at the glowing red text. His skin crawled. Everyone in the borderlands knew about the Usury System. It was a forbidden, parasitic entity that preaded on the desperate, offering miraculous solutions in exchange for extortionate, ruinous prices. To touch it was to invite slow, agonizing ruin.

But Nara was slipping away. Her pulse under his fingers was nothing more than a faint, erratic flutter.

"I need a stabilization pack. A high-tier one," Reza spat, his voice trembling but filled with a sudden, desperate resolve. "Right now. What's it going to cost?"

A soft, mocking chime echoed from the red interface. A stylized, winking smiley face flickered on the screen before transforming into a list of options.

"Whoa, buddy, slow down," a voice chimed from the system. It was smooth, dripping with a sassy, casual amusement that felt horribly out of place in the damp cellar. "We don't just hand out top-shelf miracles for free. You're in a real tight spot, and quality costs. Let's see what you've got to offer."

"I don't have time for this!" Reza slammed his fist on the dirt floor. "Just tell me what you want! Money? Core stones? I'll find them!"

"Money? Oh, sweetie, please," the AI drawled, the text scrolling rapidly. "We deal in the good stuff. Physical assets. Personal concepts. You know, things that make you, you. Let's look at the menu for a Level 5 Vitality Restoration Cure."

Three options materialized in glowing, bloody font:

[Option 1: 70% permanent reduction in right-hand motor coordination.]

[Option 2: 15 years of your remaining natural lifespan.]

[Option 3: Immediate sacrifice of your left eyebrow's physical existence & complete inability to tell a lie for the next twenty-four hours.]

Reza’s mind raced, fueled by pure adrenaline. He had to think, and he had to think fast.

If I take Option One, his thoughts screamed, my right hand is ruined. I won't be able to hold a sword. If we get attacked, we're both dead anyway. If I take Option Two, fifteen years... I might drop dead in a year if my lifespan is already short from the mana poisoning. But Option Three...

He stared at the words. Sacrifice of your left eyebrow's physical existence. It was ridiculous. It was utterly absurd. And the inability to lie? It was a massive pain in the ass, especially in a world where secrets kept you alive. But it didn't physically cripple him. It didn't shorten his life. It was a humiliating, bizarre tax, but it left his fighting capabilities intact.

"Tick-tock, big brother," the AI chimed, a digital countdown timer appearing on the screen. 5... 4...

"Three! I choose Option Three!" Reza roared. "Just take it and fix her!"

"A custom deal! I love a man who can make a quick decision. Processing transaction..."

Instantly, a white-hot agony seared the left side of Reza’s face. It felt as though a branding iron had been pressed directly onto his brow, vaporizing the hair, the roots, and the very concept of hair follicles on that patch of skin. He screamed, clutching his face as a strange, numb sensation settled over his left eye. At the same moment, a cold, heavy weight slammed into his chest, wrapping around his vocal cords like an invisible, suffocating collar. He tried to curse, but his throat locked up, refusing to let the deceptive thought form into words.

Simultaneously, a brilliant, gold-flecked crimson light erupted from the red UI, bathing the entire cellar in a blinding glow. The light converged on Nara’s chest, sinking into her skin.

Almost immediately, her ragged breathing stopped. She gasped, her chest rising in one deep, clean breath. The gray, deathly pallor of her skin receded, replaced by a warm, healthy flush. Her eyes fluttered open, bright and clear.

"Reza...?" she murmured, sitting up slowly. She looked down at her hands, then up at her brother. Her jaw dropped. "What... what is that smell? And what the hell happened to your face?"

Reza let out a shaky breath, his hand still covering the left side of his forehead. "I had to save you. The Free System broke down."

"Yeah, but..." Nara pointed a trembling finger at his face. "Reza, half your face looks like a boiled egg. Did you shave your eyebrow off?"

Reza tried to say something cool, something reassuring like 'No, it’s just a scratch,' but his throat seized violently, choking him. The curse of the Usury System clamped down on his tongue. He gasped, forced to speak the absolute, unvarnished truth.

"No, I traded the physical existence of my left eyebrow and my ability to lie for the next twenty-four hours to a sketchy red loan shark system to buy you a miracle cure," Reza blurted out, his voice loud and entirely devoid of filter.

Nara blinked, her expression deadpan. "Are you serious?"

"Yes, I am completely serious and I feel incredibly stupid right now," Reza said, his face burning with embarrassment. "I can't stop myself from saying exactly what I'm thinking."

"Oh my god," Nara muttered, though a small, relieved smile tugged at the corner of her lips. "You really are an idiot."

But the moment of relief was violently short-lived.

The crimson UI didn't just fade away; it imploded with a high-frequency, glass-shattering shriek. The energy signature released by the transaction was massive, a localized spike of high-tier spiritual power that rippled outward through the damp earth, shattering the silence of the wasteland above.

Reza’s hair stood on end. The air pressure in the cellar dropped instantly.

"Oh, no," Reza whispered, his eyes widening. "The energy flare. It's too strong."

"Reza, what is that sound?" Nara asked, her voice tight with sudden fear.

High above them, the earth began to tremble. A low, rumbling vibration shook the stone walls of the cellar, sending cascades of dirt and pebbles raining down onto their heads. The sound of a distant, high-velocity whistling grew louder by the fraction of a second.

"Get down!" Reza screamed.

He lunged across the mattress, tackling Nara to the floor and shielding her body with his own just as the world erupted in fire and noise.

BOOM!

A deafening explosion shattered the ceiling of the cellar. The force of the blast tore through the subterranean chamber, a shockwave of heat, dust, and pulverized stone that sent Reza slamming into the far wall. His ears rang with a high-pitched, agonizing drone. The air became thick with gray smoke, choking and hot.

Reza coughed violently, his vision swimming with dark spots. Through the haze, he could see Nara coughing beside him, bruised but alive, protected by his body and the wreckage of the wooden support beams that had fallen at an angle.

The dust began to settle, illuminated by a shaft of bright, harsh daylight cutting down from the newly created crater in the ceiling.

Reza struggled to his knees, his muscles screaming in protest. He reached for his sword, his fingers wrapping around the hilt. His heart pounded in his ears. The high-tier energy signature of the Usury System had acted like a lighthouse in the dark, and the predators of the borderlands had lost no time in answering the call.

Through the gaping hole in the ceiling, the thick gray smoke parted.

First came the sound. A heavy, rhythmic, metallic clank.

Clank. Clank. Clank.

It was the unmistakable sound of enchanted steel-shod boots stepping onto the shattered rubble.

Reza held his breath, his eyes straining through the dust. A tall silhouette materialized in the opening. The figure wore the polished, dark-iron armor of the Eastern Kingdom’s elite scouting unit, a crimson cloak draped over one shoulder, singed but still bearing the crest of the dragon-hawk. A massive, heavy greatsword rested casually against the hunter's shoulder, its blade etched with glowing blue runes that hummed with cold, lethal energy.

The hunter stood at the edg

e of the crater, looking down into the ruined cellar. His eyes, cold and calculating, locked onto Reza and Nara.

The echo of the sliding blast door’s final seal still vibrated in Reza’s teeth. It was a suffocating, heavy dark that pressed against his chest like wet wool. For a few seconds, there was only the sound of three pairs of lungs desperate for clean, cool air, and the sharp, irregular crackle-fizz of the red static eating away at Nara’s skin."Is everyone... still in one piece?" Reza’s voice rasped in the dark, his throat dry and tight."I think my ribs are bruised, and my dress is entirely ruined," Elara’s voice came from somewhere to his left, followed by a dry, hacking cough. "But yes. Still breathing.""Nara?" Reza shifted, his arms tightening around her shivering frame."Still here," she whispered, her voice dangerously thin and trembling. "But it feels like... like someone’s draining my battery with a rusty needle."Reza tried to call up the system UI to illuminate the area, but his interface was sluggish, crippled by the interference of the deep vault. The massive stone doors of the ancient vault had barely ground open, casting a narrow sliver of pale light into the dark, when the shadows behind them erupted. The heavy, metallic clank of Raven’s boots suddenly stopped. For a fraction of a second, the only sound in the damp stone chamber was the rapid, shallow breathing of Nara as she lay shivering in Reza's arms, the red static of her debt-load crackling across her pale skin. Then, the darkness split.A blinding arc of cold, blue runic energy cleaved through the air. The physical pressure of the strike was immense, a localized shockwave that blew the dust off the stone floor in a violent, expanding ring."Get in!" Reza roared, throwing himself forward. He shoved Elara and Nara through the opening of the massive stone doors just as Raven’s greatsword slammed into the threshold.Sparks exploded in a brilliant, chaotic shower of white and blue. The stone archway cracked, throwing jagged fragments of rock into the air. Reza scrambled ba

  • Chapter 5: A Visit from the Boss

The air inside the stone shaft was cold, smelling of ancient dust and damp earth. The frantic, explosive chaos of the forest above faded into a muffled, distant echo, the screams of the mercenaries and the screech of rubber-chicken fireballs finally cutting off as they descended deeper into the earth. Reza let out a long, shuddering breath, his shoulders dropping an inch. The ringing in his ears was slowly being replaced by the steady, rhythmic hum of the glowing stone steps beneath their boots. He looked down at his hands. They were still slightly sticky from the lavender-scented soap foam, but the manic energy of the battle was finally draining from his veins, leaving behind a dull, heavy ache."Well," Elara muttered, brushing dirt and dried leaves from her tattered silk sleeve with an air of practiced dignity. "That was... historically embarrassing. If anyone from the capital saw me cheering for explosive yellow poultry, I would have to abdicate the throne out of pure shame.""You'

The forest floor was a jagged mosaic of shattered oak branches and obsidian shrapnel. Reza landed in a crouch, his shortsword vibrating with the force of his impact, his eyes locked on the gray-cloaked figures emerging from the mist. The lead hunter, a man with a jagged scar running down his cheek, leveled his heavy crossbow. Its barrel glowed with a sickening, void-black hum."Get behind the wreckage, Nara!" Reza shouted, his voice cracking with the lingering, forced-honesty curse. "I have absolutely no tactical plan other than being a meat shield and hoping for the best!"Nara didn't argue. She grabbed Elara by the silk-clad arm, dragging the princess toward the mangled remains of the carriage. Elara, usually a vision of regal composure, looked at the charging hunters and then at Reza with wide, unblinking eyes."You are going to fight them with... what exactly?" Elara hissed, ducking behind a heavy wooden wheel. "You don't even have a mana capacitor on your person!"Reza slammed hi

The ghostly auditor flickered, its spectral pen scratching against the clipboard with a sound like a serrated blade across a chalkboard. Reza stared at it, his throat still tight with the lingering, forced-honesty curse of the Usury System."I am currently looking at a manifestation of my own ruin and I really, really wish I hadn't taken that deal," Reza blurted out, his eyes darting toward the phantom. The ghost didn't blink. It simply pointed a translucent finger toward the tree line. Before the digit could even settle, the air was torn apart by the rhythmic, thundering gallop of horses armored in matte-black steel. The forest, once silent and ominous, was suddenly flooded with the harsh, predatory glow of high-tier Royal Guard lanterns."Don't move, scavs!" a voice boomed, cutting through the damp chill. The ghost vanished into thin air, leaving behind a cold, lingering sense of dread. The dust from the crater hung in the air like suspended grit, catching the harsh, unfiltered light of the surface sun. Raven Daryn didn’t rush. He didn’t need to. He stood at the precipice of the crater, the iron-shod boots of his uniform grinding against the debris with the casual lethality of a predator checking a trap. The blue runes on his greatsword pulsed in time with his slow, deliberate heartbeat, casting long, flickering shadows that seemed to dance across Reza’s trembling frame.Reza’s hand was slick with sweat as he gripped his rusted shortsword. Beside him, Nara was still shaking off the vertigo of the blast."Target confirmed," Raven muttered, his voice cold, devoid of any warmth. His gaze flicked from Reza’s face—notably missing a left eyebrow—to the glowing, phantom remains of the red UI that still hovered in the air. "Illegal System usage detected. High-tier energy signature. You're a long way from home, scav, and you’re carrying a contagion."Reza scrambled to his fee
