The dust from the crater hung in the air like suspended grit, catching the harsh, unfiltered light of the surface sun. Raven Daryn didn’t rush. He didn’t need to. He stood at the precipice of the crater, the iron-shod boots of his uniform grinding against the debris with the casual lethality of a predator checking a trap. The blue runes on his greatsword pulsed in time with his slow, deliberate heartbeat, casting long, flickering shadows that seemed to dance across Reza’s trembling frame.
Reza’s hand was slick with sweat as he gripped his rusted shortsword. Beside him, Nara was still shaking off the vertigo of the blast.
"Target confirmed," Raven muttered, his voice cold, devoid of any warmth. His gaze flicked from Reza’s face—notably missing a left eyebrow—to the glowing, phantom remains of the red UI that still hovered in the air. "Illegal System usage detected. High-tier energy signature. You're a long way from home, scav, and you’re carrying a contagion."
Reza scrambled to his feet, pulling Nara up with him. His brain screamed at him to come up with a tactical lie—something about being a simple traveler, a mistake, a misunderstanding. He opened his mouth to spin a web of deceit, but the Usury System’s magic, heavy and restrictive as a lead blanket, coiled around his throat.
"We are totally defenseless and planning to run toward the ventilation shaft behind that collapsed pillar," Reza blurted out, his voice cracking with the indignity of total honesty. He slapped his hand over his mouth, eyes wide with horror.
Raven blinked, his brow furrowing as he tilted his head. "The ventilation shaft? That’s sealed with two tons of reinforced concrete, idiot."
Reza’s feet moved of their own accord, sprinting toward the pillar even as his mouth betrayed him. "I know it’s sealed, but I’m hoping to find an explosive charge in my brother’s hidden cache behind the loose brick, though there’s a fifty-fifty chance I’m just going to get us crushed!"
Raven didn’t even bother to draw his sword fully; he simply swung it in a wide, sweeping arc. The blade didn't just cut through the air; it emitted a dampening pulse, a blue shockwave of "null-energy" that turned the very ground beneath Reza’s feet into unstable, flickering static.
Reza dove, rolling across the uneven floor. He felt the heat of the blade pass inches above his spine, shearing off a chunk of his tunic. He scrambled up, pulling Nara under his arm like a sack of grain.
"Why are you telling me your plans?" Raven asked, genuinely confused, his sword rising again for a downward execution strike.
"Because I sold my ability to lie for twenty-four hours to a red-tinted piece of garbage, and I currently hate every second of my existence!" Reza screamed, lunging to the side as the greatsword slammed into the dirt, cratering the floor where he had stood a second before.
Nara, surprisingly, let out a high-pitched, excited whistle as they narrowly dodged a second swing. "Go, Reza! Left! No, right! Watch the toes!"
Reza felt a vein in his forehead pulse. "Don't cheer for me, Nara, this is humiliating!"
Raven swiped again, his movements fluid and trained. He was a professional, an inquisitor of the Eastern Kingdom, and he was clearly not used to his prey narrating their own escape strategy. "You’re an odd one," Raven growled, his eyes narrowing. "Most people cry for mercy. You just provide a step-by-step itinerary of your failures."
The hunter lunged, closing the distance. The dampening field from his blade began to wrap around Reza, making his limbs feel heavy, as if he were wading through waist-deep mud. He was cornered against the back wall. The rubble was piling up; there was nowhere left to go.
"System!" Reza roared, his mind flashing to the interface. "I need an escape skill! Anything! Give me something that gets me out of this cellar before he chops my head off!"
The crimson UI flickered into existence, the sassy, smooth-talking AI manifesting in the corner of his vision. “Oh, look at you, struggling like a trapped rat! For you, my favorite honest customer, I’ve got a real clearance-bin special. It’s a bit… sticky. You sure?”
"I don't care if it's pink and smells like flowers, give it to me!" Reza shouted.
“Deal! Initiating: [Skill: Slippery Soap Dodge (Tier 1)]. Cost: 10% reduction in future physical stamina regeneration. Enjoy the bubbles!”
Suddenly, the skin of Reza’s boots and the floor beneath him erupted in a frothy, shimmering lather. The friction coefficient of the entire room effectively dropped to zero.
"What in the blazes—?" Raven stumbled as his own boots hit the slick, lavender-scented foam. His balance shifted, and he windmilled his arms, his massive sword clattering against the wall.
Reza didn’t just move; he launched. The moment his feet touched the soap, he became a projectile. He skidded across the uneven stone at impossible, frictionless speeds. He slammed into the corner, but instead of stopping, he hit the wall at a sharp angle and ricocheted off it, sliding up the inclined debris toward the hole in the ceiling.
"Wheee!" Nara shrieked, clutching onto Reza as they careened through the air, trailing a long, sparkling wake of violet bubbles that smelled overwhelmingly of a spring meadow.
Raven tried to regain his footing, but he slipped violently, his armored backside hitting the dirt with a bone-jarring thud. He glared up at the ceiling, his face flushed with uncharacteristic fury. "Get back here, you lunatic!"
"I really don't want to come back because you are a terrifying man who is trying to kill us, and your armor is much too heavy for this kind of terrain!" Reza shouted at the top of his lungs, his voice echoing through the chamber as he slid at supersonic speed out of the cellar and into the jagged, gray light of the wasteland.
He didn't stop. He couldn't. The friction-negation effect of the soap kept them moving, a blur of motion and lavender-scented chaos tearing through the rocky outskirts of the sector. They bounced off boulders, skimmed over thorn bushes, and slid down the sides of sand dunes, leaving a trail of bubbles that glinted in the sunlight.
The forest line approached—a wall of black, gnarled trees that marked the transition to the outer, lawless zones. With one final, uncontrolled skid, Reza slammed into the trunk of a massive oak, the momentum finally dying as the skill’s duration flickered out.
He collapsed into the leaf litter, gasping for air, his chest heaving. Nara slid off his back, shaking bubbles from her hair. She looked at him, her eyes wide with a mix of awe and annoyance.
"That," she panted, "was the most terrifying thing that has ever happened to me. Also, I smell like a bathtub."
Reza didn't answer. He was staring at his shoulder.
The air around him didn't just go cold; it froze. A localized patch of reality seemed to warp and fray. Out of the thin, freezing mist, a figure began to coalesce—not a human, but a translucent, glowing blue phantom. It had no face, only a pair of hovering, spectral glasses, and it held a glowing, ethereal clipboard that hummed with a sound like grinding teeth.
It tapped the clipboard with a spectral pen.
"You’re late, debtor," the ghost whispered, its voice echoing directly inside Reza’s skull. The ghost’s presence felt like a freezing void, a reminder of something far worse than Rav
en’s greatsword. "And your account is officially under audit."

The echo of the sliding blast door’s final seal still vibrated in Reza’s teeth. It was a suffocating, heavy dark that pressed against his chest like wet wool. For a few seconds, there was only the sound of three pairs of lungs desperate for clean, cool air, and the sharp, irregular crackle-fizz of the red static eating away at Nara’s skin."Is everyone... still in one piece?" Reza’s voice rasped in the dark, his throat dry and tight."I think my ribs are bruised, and my dress is entirely ruined," Elara’s voice came from somewhere to his left, followed by a dry, hacking cough. "But yes. Still breathing.""Nara?" Reza shifted, his arms tightening around her shivering frame."Still here," she whispered, her voice dangerously thin and trembling. "But it feels like... like someone’s draining my battery with a rusty needle."Reza tried to call up the system UI to illuminate the area, but his interface was sluggish, crippled by the interference of the deep vault. He forced a small spark of h
Chapter 6: The Debt Breaker's Toll
The massive stone doors of the ancient vault had barely ground open, casting a narrow sliver of pale light into the dark, when the shadows behind them erupted. The heavy, metallic clank of Raven’s boots suddenly stopped. For a fraction of a second, the only sound in the damp stone chamber was the rapid, shallow breathing of Nara as she lay shivering in Reza's arms, the red static of her debt-load crackling across her pale skin. Then, the darkness split.A blinding arc of cold, blue runic energy cleaved through the air. The physical pressure of the strike was immense, a localized shockwave that blew the dust off the stone floor in a violent, expanding ring."Get in!" Reza roared, throwing himself forward. He shoved Elara and Nara through the opening of the massive stone doors just as Raven’s greatsword slammed into the threshold.Sparks exploded in a brilliant, chaotic shower of white and blue. The stone archway cracked, throwing jagged fragments of rock into the air. Reza scrambled ba
Chapter 5: A Visit from the Boss
The air inside the stone shaft was cold, smelling of ancient dust and damp earth. The frantic, explosive chaos of the forest above faded into a muffled, distant echo, the screams of the mercenaries and the screech of rubber-chicken fireballs finally cutting off as they descended deeper into the earth. Reza let out a long, shuddering breath, his shoulders dropping an inch. The ringing in his ears was slowly being replaced by the steady, rhythmic hum of the glowing stone steps beneath their boots. He looked down at his hands. They were still slightly sticky from the lavender-scented soap foam, but the manic energy of the battle was finally draining from his veins, leaving behind a dull, heavy ache."Well," Elara muttered, brushing dirt and dried leaves from her tattered silk sleeve with an air of practiced dignity. "That was... historically embarrassing. If anyone from the capital saw me cheering for explosive yellow poultry, I would have to abdicate the throne out of pure shame.""You'
Chapter 4: Exploding Chickens and Compound Interest
The forest floor was a jagged mosaic of shattered oak branches and obsidian shrapnel. Reza landed in a crouch, his shortsword vibrating with the force of his impact, his eyes locked on the gray-cloaked figures emerging from the mist. The lead hunter, a man with a jagged scar running down his cheek, leveled his heavy crossbow. Its barrel glowed with a sickening, void-black hum."Get behind the wreckage, Nara!" Reza shouted, his voice cracking with the lingering, forced-honesty curse. "I have absolutely no tactical plan other than being a meat shield and hoping for the best!"Nara didn't argue. She grabbed Elara by the silk-clad arm, dragging the princess toward the mangled remains of the carriage. Elara, usually a vision of regal composure, looked at the charging hunters and then at Reza with wide, unblinking eyes."You are going to fight them with... what exactly?" Elara hissed, ducking behind a heavy wooden wheel. "You don't even have a mana capacitor on your person!"Reza slammed hi

The ghostly auditor flickered, its spectral pen scratching against the clipboard with a sound like a serrated blade across a chalkboard. It simply pointed a translucent finger toward the tree line. Before the digit could even settle, the air was torn apart by the rhythmic, thundering gallop of horses armored in matte-black steel. The forest, once silent and ominous, was suddenly flooded with the harsh, predatory glow of high-tier Royal Guard lanterns."Don't move, scavs!" a voice boomed, cutting through the damp chill. The ghost vanished into thin air, leaving behind a cold, lingering sense of dread. Within seconds, a dozen armored lances tipped with suppression-runes were leveled at Reza’s chest
