"My head is going to pop," Reza grunted, his boots skidding on the polished obsidian floor.

The ceiling of the Great Revenue Tower was groaning, descending with the slow, terrifying inevitability of a hydraulic press. Brass gears the size of houses ground against the walls, showering them in sparks and metal shavings.

"The ceiling is at ten feet!" Nara yelled, ducking her head. "Reza, we’re going to be turned into commemorative coin pressings!"

"Kairon, hold this!" Reza shoved his rusted, half-

The rubber chicken squawked, a pathetic plastic sound that defied the cosmic weight of the approaching fleet. Reza’s white hair, now completely stark, framed a face etched with exhaustion. His ink-black eyes, however, burned with a defiant fire. The red deletion grid on the forest floor was shrinking, eating the trees, pixel by pixel.“Well, Mr. Arvand,” the Supreme Auditor said, his golden mask fixed on Reza, twin red monocles whirring. “Are you going to collect… or are you going to default?”Reza stared at the glowing badge hovering in the air. Senior Tax Collector. His debt was now Eternity’s. His choice: become the monster, or watch his world unravel. He didn’t want either.“There has to be another way,” Reza growled, his voice rough. He gripped the rubber chicken tighter. “I’m not a tax collector. I’m a big brother. I fix problems, I don’t create them.”“This *is* the fix,” the Auditor replied, his voice a harmonious chorus of perfectly synchronized typing machines. “The current

A Visit from the BossThe rubber chicken in Reza’s hand squawked, a pathetic plastic sound that defied the cosmic weight of the approaching fleet. The woman in the white suit, standing at the prow of the lead merchant vessel, didn’t flinch. Her face, sharp as a tax form, narrowed. The gavel in her hand pulsed with a cold, blue light.“You mock the Universal Credit Union, Arvand,” her voice boomed, amplified across the suddenly silent forest. “This is not a game. This is a foreclosure on an entire reality. Your reality.”“Is it?” Reza grinned, stepping forward. His white hair framed a face etched with the exhaustion of a hundred lifetimes, but his eyes burned with a defiant, ink-black fire. “Last I checked, a reality foreclosure requires a certified lien, an active audit, and a proper Form 1099-C. Where’s your paperwork, ma’am?”She raised an elegant eyebrow. “I am the Executor of the High Court. My authority is the law itself.”“Then you’re working for a bankrupt system,” Reza shot ba

Reza gripped the hilt, his white hair whipping in the static wind of the Sinking Fund. The silver skeleton of the Chief Liquidator towered over them, its fountain-pen claws dripping with lethal administrative energy."Nara," Reza hissed, his voice vibrating with the resonance of the Master Contract. "If you can’t see the variables, look for the exceptions."Nara’s golden eyes flickered, her pupils dilating as she stared into the heart of the giant. "It’s not a code, Reza. It’s an append. The First Debtor didn't program the system; he attached a parasite to it.""A parasite?" Raven Daryn bellowed, parrying a sweeping pen-nib that cleaved the air where his head had been. "I don't care if it’s a tapeworm, kill it!""The credit line isn't inside the giant," Nara yelled, dodging a spray of liquid mercury. "It’s the giant! The whole thing is a container for the overflow debt!"Reza didn't wait. He launched himself off the brass platform, the rusted blade in his hand glowing with the pitch-b

"We are leaking," Reza muttered, staring at his palm. The skin wasn't just pale; it was flickering. A grid of faint, cyan light bled through his veins where blood should have been."It’s not a leak," Nara whispered, clutching his arm. Her golden eyes were frantic, scanning the brass architecture. "It’s a sync-error. The system is trying to finalize our deletion, but your Void-signature is holding the file open.""Can we close the file?" Reza hissed, his boots clattering against the descending brass ceiling."If we close it, we're archived," Kairon Vessel replied, floating effortlessly upside down. He didn't look bothered, but his bowtie was currently cycling through colors that didn't exist in the visible spectrum. "Which is just a professional term for 'erased from the causal loop'.""I’m not interested in being a footnote," Raven growled. He was pressing his shoulder against a brass column, his strength failing. "Arvand, the ceiling is at five feet. If that machine comes down anothe

  • Chapter 27: Bear-ly Legal Maneuvers

Reza felt the cold bite of the soul-mercury seep through his leather vest, turning his blood into lead. He clutched the rusted hilt of his blade, his white hair whipping in the static wind of the Sinking Fund."Arvand," Raven Daryn growled, his voice a hoarse rasp from his position on a floating brass slab. "The giant is turning into a void-hole. If you have a plan, now is the time to invoice the gods.""I’m working on it," Reza muttered, his heart ticking a frantic, irregular rhythm behind his ribs."The entity is formatting the sector, Mr. Arvand," Kairon Vessel’s voice echoed, frantic and thin. The ghost was flickering, his tuxedo cycling through a dozen different historical eras as the local reality succumbed to the data-wipe. "If you do not close the ledger, we will be permanently archived."Nara was staring at the towering, silver-skeletal remains of the Chief Liquidator, her golden eyes wide and unblinking. "Reza... the core. It’s not just an error. It’s an exit. Silas was righ

"What in the gods' name..." Raven Daryn whispered, his voice cracking beneath the weight of his own disbelief. "Is that a bear, Arvand?""Keep it angry, metalhead!" Reza yelled, his knuckles white as he tightened his chokehold on the three-hundred-pound Terror-Claw Grizzly. "It’s a B-tier financial hedge! If this beast stops thrashing, the interest rate kicks back in!""Hedge?" Raven took a cautious step back, his greatsword humming with neutralizing light. "You are literally drowning in mud and fur, and you’re talking about accounting?""He's not insane, he's just incredibly cheap!" Nara cheered from the sidelines, clutching the glowing spectral clipboard to her chest. "Keep holding, Reza! The system just registered this as 'Active Combat'! The interest rate is frozen at zero!""Zero?" Raven’s visor tilted, his confusion deepening. "You are fighting a forest predator to avoid a surcharge?""It’s three billion credits a minute, you glorified tin can!" Reza gasped, his muscles screamin
