"Hold your blades!" the High Priest screamed, scrambling to his feet while clutching his bruised hip. "Do not strike him! Do not let that filthy, corrupt blood spill upon the sacred floor!"
The fifty wardens halted mid-step, their heavy boots scraping against the marble as their silver swords glinted in the dim, shadowed light.
Julian lowered his blade half an inch, his shoulders rigid, his eyes wide as he stared at the thin black veins branching across Felix’s throat. "What do we do with him then, Your Grace? He broke the Pact Orb. He ruined the ritual!"
"Throw him to the Maw," Sarah said, stepping forward. Her voice was flat, devoid of its earlier sweetness, her pale hands clenched into tight fists inside her sleeves. "The pit takes all trash. Let the beasts inside clean up the mess."
"Yes," the Priest gasped, pointing a trembling finger at Felix. "Open the central grate! Cast the void-crawling filth into the dark where he belongs!"
Felix spat a dark gob of blood onto the white stone floor. "You tried to bury me in the mud, Sarah. You think a hole in the ground is going to hold me?"
"You are nothing, Felix," Sarah said coldly, not meeting his eyes. "You are just a broken vessel."
Four heavily armored wardens rushed forward, slamming the heavy wooden butts of their spears into Felix’s stomach and ribs. Pain exploded across his midsection, knocking the air straight out of his lungs. He crumpled to his knees, but before he could push himself back up, two guards grabbed his arms, dragging his boots across the slick marble toward the massive iron ring at the center of the arena floor.
Julian stepped into his path, leaning down close with a cruel smile. "Give my regards to the bottom, brother."
"I will see you again, Julian," Felix wheezed, his jaw locked. "I promise you that."
Julian kicked Felix’s legs out from under him. The wardens dragged him to the edge of the pit where a massive, rust-covered iron grate was already grinding open. A foul, humid stench of ancient decay, damp moss, and old rot surged up from the black void below.
"Drop him!" the High Priest commanded.
The wardens let go.
Felix fell backward into the dark.
The daylight vanished instantly as the heavy iron grate slammed shut above his head, reducing the world to a tiny square of fading silver light. The air rushed past his ears, cold and heavy. Felix twisted in midair, reaching blindly for the jagged pit walls, but his fingernails only scraped uselessly against slick, wet granite.
He struck a sloping stone ledge thirty feet down. The impact snapped his collarbone with a sickening crack, sending him tumbling head over heels down a steep, slippery chute of jagged rock and calcified bone. He rolled violently, slamming into granite outcroppings until he crashed onto a soft, filthy pile of animal remains at the very bottom.
Silence settled over the deep.
Felix lay flat on his back in the absolute blackness, his chest rising and falling in shallow, agonizing gasps. Every breath felt like a hot iron poker thrust into his side.
"Still breathing?" the voice rasped, echoing softly inside his skull. "Your bones break so easily, little rat."
"Shut up," Felix groaned, coughing up a mouthful of iron-tasting blood onto the crushed ribs beneath him. "Help me up."
"I am not your walking stick," the entity hissed, its tone dripping with dark amusement. "Fix your own spine. Or let the local wildlife gnaw on your soft bits."
In the pitch-black silence of the cavern, a dry, clicking sound echoed from the far wall.
Click. Click. Click.
Felix froze. He forced his eyes wide, but the dark was absolute. There was no light, no torch, no glowing moss. Only the wet, heavy smell of stagnant blood and old rot.
Something heavy scraped against the stone floor, moving slowly toward the bone pile. Then came a low, wet hiss that vibrated straight through the cold ground beneath Felix's back.
"What is that?" Felix whispered into the dark, his fingers digging into the crushed ribcage beneath his left hand.
"A predator," the Void Sovereign whispered back, sounding delighted. "It smells your broken ribs. It smells your panic. It thinks you are dinner."
The clicking grew faster, louder, moving in a sweeping semicircle around his body. A second pair of scraping claws sounded to his left, followed by a wet, snapping jaw to his right.
"There is more than one," Felix muttered, trying to pull his legs under him. His left knee buckled instantly, sending a blinding bolt of pain up his spine. "I can't stand."
"Then crawl," the entity mocked. "Or better yet, let them tear your skin off. Perhaps I will enjoy the next body more."
"No," Felix growled through gritted teeth, dragging his body an inch across the bone pile. "I am not dying in a hole while Julian drinks my wine."
A sudden, fierce gust of wind blew across his face, carrying the rank, sickening stench of raw meat.
A massive, armored creature lunged out of the lightless void straight toward his throat. Felix could hear the sharp, sickle-like claws cutting through the heavy air, the snapping of bone-crushing mandibles inches from his nose.
Give it to me! Felix roared in his own mind.
"Finally," the Void Sovereign laughed.
Felix’s mouth forced itself wide open against his will. A sound escaped his throat that was not human—a deep, booming, unnatural screech that shattered the nearby stalactites and sent stone dust raining down into the dark.
Thick, writhing black tendrils exploded outward from the mark on Felix’s chest, tearing through his ruined shirt like living whips. They lashed into the darkness, catching the jumping beast straight in midair.
The creature shrieked as six shadowy spears impaled its hard outer shell, locking it suspended in the air right above Felix's face.
"Now," the entity echoed through Felix’s jaw, forcing his eyes to flare with a dark, lightl

THE OUTER HORIZON
The deep, metallic note of the distant horn vibrated through the stones of the palace, causing the shattered glass on the marble floor to dance and ring like tiny bells.Sarah pulled her father from his broken crystal container, wrapping her damp cloak around his shivering shoulders. The old lord coughed weakly, his eyes cloudy as he blinked against the gray light pouring through the ruined roof."Sarah?" he whispered, his voice as thin and brittle as dry paper. "Where... where is the King? Where are the guards?""The King is dead, Father," Sarah said softly, helping him lean comfortably against the base of the broken dais. She looked over her shoulder at Felix, who was standing quietly before the empty throne, his purple eyes fixed intently on the dark clouds above. "Felix saved us. He broke the ritual."Felix ran his left hand over the silver Vane signet ring resting on his pinky. "I saved myself. The architect's message was clear. The Sovereign is a shield, not a weapon. If the roya
THE ARCHITECT 'S BLOOD
The three jet-black stone pillars rose fifty feet into the air, their surfaces carved with glowing purple glyphs that hummed with absolute, unyielding authority. The wild, roaring tear in reality instantly quieted, its jagged purple flames smoothing out into a flat, glass-like pool suspended directly behind the throne.King Aldous backed away, his heavy boots tripping over the gold-embroidered hem of his wet velvet robe. He raised his cracked scepter with trembling hands, his chest heaving violently as he stared in unadulterated terror at the glowing, lightless crown hovering above Felix's head."Impossible," the King babbled, his dry voice high, cracking, and frantic. "The Vane family were common miners! A line of mountain dogs! My ancestors raised them from the dirt and gave them purpose!""Your ancestors were petty thieves who stole my master's blueprints while he slept," the Void Sovereign spoke through Felix's mouth. The double-toned voice shook the loose dust from the high ceilin
THE RIFT IN THE THRONE
The fifty-foot iron gates of the royal palace groaned, crumpled like parchment, and disintegrated into a shower of white-hot shrapnel. Purple void flames roared through the breach, spilling across the courtyard and melting the wet marble flags into glass. The remaining royal guards dropped their weapons, screaming as they scrambled over the fallen pillars to escape the heat.Felix walked through the ruined gateway, his heavy boots crushing the glowing embers. The black void-steel scales covering his right arm and chest throbbed in time with the deep, sickening pulse coming from inside the hall. The grand throne room was stripped of its former glory. The high stained-glass windows were completely shattered, letting the cold storm rain pour onto the carpeted dais. In the center of the hall, behind the golden throne, hung a massive tear in the fabric of reality. The rift burned with lightless purple fire, spider-webbing across the stone walls and sucking the ambient light out of the air.
THE SHADOW ON THE SPIRE
Felix landed on the sloped slate roof of a noble manor, his boots skidding across the rain-slicked tiles before he caught his balance. Forty feet below, the wide marble streets of the upper district were completely deserted, save for patrols of heavy cavalry sweeping past empty fountains. With every leap across the rooftops, the stolen gold magic from Julian pulsed in Felix's bloodstream, binding with the void energy. The black scales on his arm shifted, expanding across his right shoulder and locking around his ribs in flexible, interlocking plates."The magic feels different now," Felix muttered, crouching near a stone gargoyle as rain lashed his hood. "It does not just burn. It flows.""You filled the hollow vessel with noble blood," the Void Sovereign rasped, its voice resonating inside his jaw. "The scales are shifting from raw hide to true void-steel. The arch-mages will not cut through us so easily now."Felix looked up. At the end of the high avenue sat the royal palace, its m
BLOOD AND GOLD
Julian’s frantic sobs echoed off the damp granite walls of the vault as the black tendrils pulled him tighter against the stone."Felix, please!" Julian choked out, his eyes wide with wild, unadulterated terror as the razor-sharp claws on Felix’s scaled hand hovered inches from his eyes. "Take the gold! Take the estate! Just let me live!""You left me to rot in the ravine, Julian," Felix said, his voice dropping into a hollow, reverberating register. "You watched them throw me into the abyss. Blood meant nothing to you then.""It was Sarah!" Julian shrieked, his legs kicking uselessly in midair. "She planned it all! She wanted your core out of the way!""I do not care whose idea it was," Felix said.He pressed his scaled palm flat against Julian’s chest. The black mark beneath Felix’s shirt flared with blinding dark heat. The tendrils holding Julian pulsed, turning a deep, lightless violet as they began to siphon the golden magic straight out of Julian’s body.Julian let out a sharp,
VAULT OF THE VANES
Frost exploded across the forge floor in a blinding wave of blue light, instantly coating the iron racks and coal piles in thick, crackling ice. Captain Gerald stepped through the ruined doorframe, his rapier dripping with frost, his cold eyes sweeping over the room."Find the defect!" Gerald barked to the four guards surging in behind him. "Check the cellar! Leave the old smith for the flames!"A thick cloud of white steam and coal smoke billowed off the furnace as icy air hit the open coals. From the heavy shadows behind the chimney, Felix did not hesitate. He melted seamlessly into the smoke, his shadow-step carrying him behind Gerald in a fraction of a second.Felix’s scaled right hand shot out from his cloak, clamping around the captain's wrist with the crushing force of an iron vice."Looking for me, Captain?" Felix whispered into Gerald's ear.Gerald gasped, his eyes widening in shock as he tried to channel his ice magic. But the void scales on Felix's arm drank the blue energy
