“Odrik, hit the manual override on the left, now! Don’t just stand there looking at my mustache!” Ravelk screamed, his voice echoing against the titanium shutters.

Odrik Veyl didn’t move. His pistol was still aimed square at Ravelk’s chest. “You’re Morthan. The kid who’s been breaking the city all day. Why shouldn’t I just let the security system take you out?”

“Because if I die, this whole wing goes up in smoke and you’ll be the guy who lost the Heart of the Void because of a grudge!” Ravelk lunged toward the control console, ignoring the red laser dot dancing on his forehead. “System, tell me I have enough points to not get shot right now!”

[ Alert: Host has 2,300 Misfortune Points. ]

[ Suggestion: Spend 400 Points to trigger ‘Magnetic Interference’. ]

“Do it! Just do it!”

A sudden, sharp hum filled the air. Odrik’s high-end tactical pistol jerked in his hand, the metal barrel twisting toward the floor as if pulled by an invisible giant.

“What the hell? My gun!” Odrik barked, struggling to keep his grip.

“Mavrek, help him!” Ravelk shouted, his fingers blurring over the keypad. “Unless you want your family name to be associated with the biggest crater in the Diamond District!”

Mavrek Sorn was currently hiding behind a marble pillar, his face the color of sour milk. “I’m not a technician, you lunatic! I’m an investor!”

“Then invest in some manual labor and kick that emergency lever!” Ravelk pointed to a red bar near the floor. “Now!”

Mavrek scrambled forward, his expensive shoes sliding on the polished floor. He slammed his foot onto the lever just as a deep, rhythmic thrumming vibrated through the soles of their feet.

CLACK-WHIRRRRR.

The vault door didn’t open, but the overhead vents groaned, reversing their flow. The green gas began to thin, sucked back into the filtration system.

“Did we get it?” Mavrek panted, leaning against the wall.

“The self-destruct is paused, not cancelled,” Ravelk wheezed, his head spinning. “But the roof access is open. Odrik, tell your guards to stand down, or I’ll let the System finish what it started.”

“You’re a freak, Morthan,” Odrik spat, but he touched his earpiece. “All units, hold fire. Target is moving to the roof. Do not—I repeat, do not—engage until I’ve cleared the vault.”

“Smart move,” Ravelk said, already sprinting toward the service stairs. “See you at the next disaster!”

“You’re not getting away that easily!” Odrik’s voice followed him up the stairwell. “I’m going to have your head for this!”

Ravelk burst through the roof access door, the cool night air hitting his face like a physical relief. The city skyline stretched out before him, a sea of neon and glass.

“Okay, System. Escape plan. I need a miracle, and I need it cheap.”

[ Note: A miracle costs 5,000 points. You are currently at a deficit. ]

[ Warning: Misfortune Balance is spiking due to ‘Unfinished Business’ with the Bureau. ]

“Great. Just great. What are my options?”

[ Option A: Jump. ]

[ Option B: Get arrested. ]

“I hate Option B,” Ravelk muttered, looking at the edge of the roof.

Behind him, the door flew open. Four of Odrik’s elite guards stepped out, their rifles leveled.

“Hands up, Morthan! Nowhere to run!” the lead guard shouted.

“You’d be surprised,” Ravelk said, offering a weak, terrifyingly manic grin. “Hey, guys? Ever seen a man fly out of pure spite?”

“Don’t move!”

Ravelk didn't wait. He turned and sprinted toward the ledge.

“He’s jumping! Stop him!”

Ravelk launched himself into the void. The sensation of weightlessness lasted for a heartbeat before gravity reclaimed its debt.

“AAAHHHHH! SYSTEM! DO SOMETHING!”

[ Calculating... ]

[ Triggering ‘The Aerodynamic Overcoat’ protocol. ]

[ Cost: 600 Misfortune Points. ]

The oversized trench coat Ravelk was wearing suddenly stiffened, the fabric catching the updrafts between the skyscrapers. He wasn't flying; he was falling with style or at least, falling slightly slower than a brick.

“Whoa! Whoa! Left! Go left!”

He soared over a dark alley, his boots narrowly missing a satellite dish. Ahead of him, the skeletal frame of a massive construction project loomed the New Dawn Skyscraper.

“Not the steel! Anything but the steel!” Ravelk screamed.

[ Alert: Imminent collision. Bracing for impact. ]

CRANG.

Ravelk didn't hit a floor; he hit a suspended crane cable. His arms wrapped around it instinctively, the friction burning through his sleeves.

“Gah! My hands! Everything hurts!”

He swung like a pendulum, his body slamming into a stack of rebar on the twentieth floor. He rolled, gasping for air, the metallic taste of blood filling his mouth.

“I’m alive. I’m actually.. oh, you’ve got to be kidding me.”

High above, a massive steel beam, suspended by a frayed cable, groaned. The 'Magnetic Interference' from earlier seemed to have left a lingering residue.

“System? Is that beam moving?”

[ Correct. The ‘Compensatory Calamity’ for your successful escape is currently 50 tons of reinforced steel. ]

“Move! Move, move, move!” Ravelk scrambled to his feet, his leg screaming in protest.

SNAP.

The cable gave way. The beam fell, slicing through the air with a terrifying whistle. Ravelk dove through an open window frame, the steel beam smashing into the floor behind him with a sound that shook the entire structure.

“Is that it? Are we done?” Ravelk panted, laying flat on the concrete.

[ Negative. Structural integrity of the construction site has been compromised. ]

The floor beneath him tilted.

“No. No, no, no! I just got here!”

The entire section of the unfinished floor began to slide outward, collapsing under the weight of the fallen beam. Ravelk slid with it, his fingers clawing at the smooth concrete.

“I’m gonna die! I’m actually gonna die this time!”

He went over the edge again. This time, there was no coat to save him. He was a stone dropped from the heavens.

“SYSTEM! SPEND EVERYTHING! GIVE ME A LANDING! ANY LANDING!”

[ Transaction Confirmed: All remaining Misfortune Points spent. ]

[ Calamity-Adjusted Landing Sequence Initiated. ]

Ravelk closed his eyes, bracing for the final crunch of bone against asphalt. He felt the wind whipping past him, the roar of the city fading into a terrifying whistle.

SPLUTCH.

It wasn't hard. It was soft. It was very, very soft. And warm. And it smelled like the absolute worst nightmare of a dairy farmer.

Ravelk sank into the muck, his entire body submerged in a thick, semi-liquid substance. He flailed, his head popping above the surface as he coughed and sputtered.

“Pah! Ugh! What… what is this?”

He wiped his eyes, looking around. He was in the back of a massive, open-topped industrial truck. On the side of the truck, in big, friendly letters, was the logo for ‘Green-Grow Organic Fertilizers’.

“Manure,” Ravelk whispered, his voice cracking. “It’s a truck full of manure.”

[ Notification: Survival achieved. ]

[ Note: The ‘Soft Landing’ protocol selected the only available high-density organic cushion within a 50-meter radius. ]

“I’m covered in it, System! I’m literally covered in crap!”

[ At least you aren't a pancake on the sidewalk. Would you like a breakdown of the nutrients currently soaking into your skin? ]

“Shut up! Just shut up!” Ravelk grabbed the side of the truck, pulling himself up.

The truck was stopped at a red light. On the sidewalk, a man in a rumpled suit was staring at the truck with his mouth hanging open. He was holding a tablet, a digital camera drone hovering over his shoulder.

“Ravelk Morthan?” the man asked, his voice a mix of horror and fascination.

Ravelk froze, a clump of fertilizer sliding off his shoulder. “Tavren Malk? The informant?”

“I’ve been tracking the ‘Chaos Path’ all night,” Tavren said, stepping closer, his drone zooming in on Ravelk’s face. “The building collapse, the lottery, the club, the auction… and now you fall out of the sky into a pile of dung.”

“It’s been a long day, Tavren,” Ravelk said, trying to maintain some shred of dignity while smelling like a compost heap. “Can you just help me out of here?”

Tavren didn't move. He just watched as the drone took a dozen high-resolution photos.

“You know, I’ve seen some things in this city, Morthan. I’ve seen corporate wars, I’ve seen supernatural anomalies, and I’ve seen the Bureau burn down half a district to catch a spy.”

“Is there a point to this?” Ravelk snapped.

“The point is,” Tavren said, a slow, dark smile spreading across his face, “you’re not just lucky. You’re a localized natural disaster. You’re the most chaotic element this city has seen in a hundred years.”

“I’m just trying to survive,” Ravelk grumbled, sliding down the side of the truck and hitting the pavement with a wet thwack.

“Survive?” Tavren laughed, shaking his head. “My friend, you aren't surviving. You’re rewriting the rules. And I think I want a front-row seat for the next chapter.”

The truck's engine roared as the light turned green. Ravelk stood in the middle of the street, dripping, exhausted, and smelling like a farm.

“Front-row seat?” Ravelk muttered to himself. “Fine. But you’re bringing the towels.”

[ Alert: New Misfortune Points accumulating... ]

[ Reason: Public Humiliation (Extreme). ]

“Oh, go to hell, System,” Ravelk groaned, starting his long, smelly walk home.

Ravelk hit the cool night air, his neck stinging and his heart racing. He had escaped the law, but he had a feeling he had just walked into a much tighter trap. “Ravelk Morthan! This is the Investigation Bureau! Stand down and keep your hands where we can see them!”The voice through the megaphone felt like a physical weight, pinning Ravelk against the cold brick of the alleyway. Within seconds, a wall of thick, acrid grey smoke billowed upward, swallowing the headlights and the shouting agents.“What the—? Gas! Get the masks on!”“Move, move! The smell of antiseptic and cheap hospital coffee still clung to Ravelk’s clothes as he stood before the towering glass facade of the Kain Corporate Plaza. His left leg was stiff, the "stabilization" from the System having fused the bone back together, but leaving a lingering, ghostly ache that reminded him of the fruit cart’s impact. He checked his watch. He was exactly three minutes early.“System,” he muttered under his breath, adjusting his collar to hide the bruising on his neck. “Status.”[ Current Balance: 1,000 Misfortune Points. ][ Note: Physical recovery is currently at 85%. • 1. The Fruit Cart Incident

The humid air of a mid-July afternoon clung to Ravelk Morthan’s skin, thick with the smell of scorched asphalt and cheap street food. He stood on the corner of 5th and Main, his fingers trembling as they brushed the worn fabric of a jacket he hadn’t owned in a decade. The cacophony of the city, the rhythmic thrum of engines, the distant siren, the chatter of a thousand lives swirled around him like a fever dream.“Hey, watch it, buddy! You’re blocking the flow!”Ravelk blinked, turning to see a man in a rumpled suit glaring at him. “Sorry. My bad. Just… lost my head for a second.”“Yeah, well, lose it somewhere else. People got places to be,” the man grumbled, pushing past him.Ravelk looked down at his hands. They were smooth, devoid of the jagged scars he’d earned in the Wastes. His reflection in a nearby shop window confirmed the impossible: he was twenty-two again.“Is it really today?” Ravelk whispered to himself. “July 14th?”“Hey! Ravelk! You alright, man?”A familiar voice mad
