An hour later, Mei was fully dressed in her finest clothes and jewelry.
She had also gone through the trouble of doing her makeup. Tonight was very crucial. If she missed this opportunity, she might never get another. Satisfied with her make-up, she walked back to the living room where Zeke was sprawled on the couch, motionlessly. Earlier, she had dragged him all the way from the kitchen to the living room. By morning, he'll ask a lot of questions but if all went well tonight, it wouldn't really matter. Just then, a car horn honked outside. It was Craig's chauffeur. He had arrived to pick her up. Mei took one last glance at Zeke and muttered under her breath. "I'm sorry, Zeke.... I'll be back soon." Then she stepped out of the house, slipping into the backseat of Craig's Rolls-Royce phantom. The chauffeur closed the door after her, and rode the car away from the Zhao family's estate. * * * * Inside the chill quiet living room, Zeke's motionless body remained still on the couch. Suddenly, his eyes snapped open. He filled his lungs with air and sat up in one fluid motion. At that moment, he pulled down the collar of his shirt and checked his left shoulder. A birthmark resembling a crane glowed faintly on his shoulder. The crane mark only awakens when his body senses danger to his body system. Centuries ago, a young farmer rescued a divine crane bird from being hunted down by a tyrant emperor of that period who sought its power for himself. In gratitude, the crane blessed the farmer and his bloodline with divine health. The farmer's descendants were immune to disease, poison, and drugs. Due to the Crane's blessings, the Rockechilds possessed the ability to heal rapidly and aged slowly. Neither poison nor drugs had any effect on them. Zeke wore back his clothes, his heart filled with bitterness. He overheard Mei when she made that phone call to Craig. He had also heard when Craig's Rolls-Royce phantom pulled up outside to pick her up. "She betrayed me..." He said gravely, his hands clenched into fists. "How could she lie to my face and then drug me just to be with Craig?" Without wasting a second, Zeke pulled out his phone and dialed a number. Zeke's head of agents, Flynn, answered on the first ring. "Good evening, young master. What are your orders?" "There's a black Rolls-Royce Phantom belonging to Craig. I want it followed. Do not lose it no matter what. My wife is in that car." "Understood," Flynn replied. "I'll deploy all my men right away, sir." "Keep me posted on her location," Zeke hung up the call and strode out of the house. He walked into the garage, sliding behind the wheel of Mei's Lexus IS300. Switching on the GPS tracker on his phone, Zeke roared the car to life and tore out of the estate. "They couldn't have gone far," Zeke said to himself, his knuckles turning white on the steering wheel. "When I find her, I'll make her regret betraying me for a cheap rat like Craig." * * * * Mei arrived at Craig's private villa where she was warmly ushered in by the servants into a vast dinning hall. A long table stretched down the center of the room which was filled with silverware and bottles of expensive wines. Guests in tuxedos and designer dresses sat around the table, mingling over champagne, laughing and clicking glasses. "Welcome to my home, Mei," Craig materialized from the shadows of the hall. "I'm so glad you could make it." Mei forced a polite smile, extending her hand. "The pleasure is mine. Thank you for having me, Craig." Craig ignored the handshake and instead, slide his arm around her waist as he steered her toward the dinning table. "You're in for a treat Mei," Craig muttered. "After tonight, you won't go home empty handed." Mei forced herself to allow him the liberty for the time being. For the sake of Zhao Dynasty's future, she had to endure Craig's flirtatious attitude. "Ladies and gentlemen, meet Mei Zhao, daughter of Zhao Long," Craig announced to his associates. "Some of you may know her. She's Zhao Dynasty CIO. The brains behind it's success." Some of the guests acknowledged Mei as she sat down. She recognized several faces. These men and women were tycoons and industrialists whose signatures were worth hundreds of millions of dollars. They literally trade favours for currency. If she could convince one of them to pick up interest at investing in Zhao Dynasty, her family's company would revive back. "Mei," Craig sat down beside her, his smile lazy. "The stock crash wrecked everyone in the republic. But there are a few businessmen who kept their money safe. They have the kind of capital that you need." "I can see that," Mei replied, accepting a flute glass from a passing waiter. "I recognize several of them." "I can get you the connection you need to bounce back from your loss, Mei," Craig went on smoothly. "These people have deep pockets. All you need is my introduction and Zhao Dynasty would have investors clamouring to pool money into the business." Mei's face lit up with hope. "You'd do that, for me? I don't know what to say, Craig. You're truly amazing." Craig's eyes narrowed and his voice dropped. "But I want something in return, Mei." Mei blinked. "And what would that be?" Craig's eyes lingered on her with yearning as he placed his hand over hers, leaning in closer. "It's very simple, Mei," he muttered. "Leave your husband. Divorce him and marry me instead." Mei froze, her eyes widening in shock. The words slammed her like a train. For a long moment, she didn't say anything. She swallowed and fidgeted with her drink. "Divorce, Zeke?" Mei asked in disbelief. "You're asking me to leave my husband to be with you, and in exchange, you'll help me?" Craig smiled. "It's a good offer, Mei. Tell me, what good does Zeke do for you? He's poor and broke. I can offer you so much more." Mei hesitated, her mind racing. She knew Craig wasn't wrong about Zeke. Zeke was completely useless to her. He had no money, no influence, nothing that could save Zhao Dynasty. She didn't come all this way to miss out on an opportunity like this. An opportunity to redeem herself from her failure. All it would cost was her marriage. This was her only lifeline to erase her failure and save Zhao Dynasty. It was the perfect choice. Mei turned away and shut her eyes. The air thickened between them as she thought a little more over it. Then she opened her mouth and uttered in a steady firm voice, "Craig... I'm sorry. But I can't marry you."Latest Chapter
The powerless hostess
Zeke looked genuinely puzzled as Raymond barked at him.“I didn’t do anything,” he said calmly. “Why are you shouting at me for?”Raymond’s face reddened with rage.“Don’t bullshit me,” he snapped. “I know you had something to do with this. Things like this don’t just happen.”Before Zeke could respond, Mei stepped forward. Her eyes flashed with anger.]“And what exactly is wrong with us getting the best room on the ship?” she demanded coldly. “Have you even seen the room you arranged for us?”She pointed back down the corridor.“It was awful. Cramped, filthy, and insulting. Even my father’s servants have better rooms than that.”Marilyn stepped forward as well.“How dare you!” she fired back. “If you’re not happy, then you can get lost! It’s my money. I rented this ship. I decide how my guests are treated!”Zeke didn’t raise his voice. He didn’t even look offended.“Unfortunately,” he said evenly, “it’s getting late. We drove four hours to get here, and I don’t feel like checking int
New orders
Zeke pushed the door open and stepped back into the room.Mei was standing by the small table, arms crossed tightly over her chest, her expression still simmering with anger. The moment she saw him, she turned sharply.“Well?” she asked. “Did you speak with Marilyn?”Zeke smiled faintly, completely at ease. “No,” he said. “I didn’t waste my efforts on her.”Mei blinked. “Then what did you do?”“I went straight to the captain,” Zeke replied calmly. “Filed a formal complaint. Told him the accommodation didn’t match the standards promised to guests of our status.”He glanced around the room once, unimpressed. “A better room should be arranged shortly.”Mei frowned, clearly unconvinced.“Zeke, this is Marilyn’s event,” she said. “Do you really think the captain would dare go against her—”Before she could finish, there was a sudden knock. The door swung open almost immediately.Three uniformed crew members rushed in, followed by a sharply dressed officer with gold trim on his sleeves. “
The shabby room
Margie stopped in front of a narrow door near the far end of the corridor. This section of the ship was noticeably quieter with just plain carpeting and dull walls. She slid the key card and pushed the door open. “This is your room.”Zeke stepped in first. The space was bleak and the air smelled faintly of cheap detergent.A single deck-style bed was bolted against the wall, narrow enough that even one person would have to sleep carefully to avoid rolling off. The mattress looked thin and stiff. Beside it sat a small square table with one chair. There were no couch, no vanity, no minibar. It looked less like a guest suite and more like a room reserved for temporary staff.Mei froze at the doorway. Her eyes slowly swept across the room, anger rising in her chest. “You’ve got to be kidding me.”She walked in then spun around to face Margie.“What is this?” Mei demanded, her voice tight. “Is this supposed to be our room?”Margie stood by the door, her expression flat. “Yes. This is you
The cruise ship
The weekend getaway turned out to be far more extravagant than Zeke expected. The “venue” Marilyn had chosen was a mid-sized luxury cruise ship—large enough to host a wedding, but small enough for an exclusive weekend getaway. The ship wasn't setting sail into the open sea. It was a short voyage where the ship would drift a few feet from the shore, circling the coastline, then returning by sundown each day. Mei tightened her fingers around Zeke’s arm as they stepped aboard the ship. At the entrance stood Marilyn, the hostess herself—draped in a sparkling rose-gold dress that screamed ‘I must outshine everyone here.’ Beside her was her daughter, Margie, who wore a pale expression. Like someone who was forced to be there. As Zeke and Mei approached, Marilyn’s face lit up with a fake smile. “Oh, Zeke! You made it. And I see you brought Mei with you.” Mei stepped forward. “It's a pleasure to meet you,” she said warmly, opening her arms to offer a polite greeting hug. But Marilyn
The getaway
Later That Afternoon, Zeke and Anna escorted the Bakers to a Private Airstrip.Jessica Baker stood beside her father's silver private jet, her suitcase already loaded, her father seated inside waiting for her.Zeke and Mei stood with her near the boarding steps. Jessica turned to Mei first, pulling her into a tight hug.“Thank you, Mei,” she whispered against her shoulder. “For everything. For forgiving me. I don’t deserve you.”Mei smiled softly, rubbing Jessica’s back. “You do. You’re my friend now. And friends take care of each other.”Jessica pulled away slightly, sniffing. “Let’s hang out soon, okay? We have so much catching up to do.”Mei chuckled. “I’ll make out time. But for now, I’ll be buried in work. Especially now that Rockechild Group has secured the oil reserves.”Jessica rolled her eyes with a weak smile. “Same here. I have a mountain of workload to climb now that Dad has lost the license rights. This is my mess. It's only fair I clean it up.”Mei reached and squeezed h
Forgiveness
The room fell into a heavy, breathless silence. Jessica’s confession lingered in the air like smoke—raw and painful. No one dared to move. No one dared to speak.Russell Baker stared at his daughter as though he was seeing her for the first time. He had never seen this side of her before. “Jessica…” he whispered under his breath. But before he could say more, something unexpected happened.Mei stepped forward, matching right up to Jessica.Jessica squeezed her eyes shut, bracing herself for a slap across the face. Her breath trembled. But instead, she felt warm arms wrap around her in an embrace.Jessica’s eyes snapped open in shock.Everyone gasped.Even Zhao Long, who stood stony-faced moments ago, blinked as if he couldn’t believe what he was seeing.Russell froze with his mouth slightly open.Jessica stood stiff in Mei’s arms.“M-Mei?” she whispered.Mei tightened the embrace.“You know the thing I hated the most about you?” she murmured, her voice gentle. “You always bottle up y
