The ruins gave way to a subterranean sprawl, a labyrinth of rusted pipes and flickering neon lights that pulsed like a dying heart. The Exchange was not a building; it was an infection in the city’s concrete foundations, a massive, fortified bunker where the desperate and the predatory bartered their remaining seconds.

Henrique pulled his jacket collar up, the heat from the brand on his shoulder radiating through his thin shirt like a fever. He kept his left arm tucked tight, the crimson display of his cuff masked by the heavy fabric of his sleeve.

"Stay close," Julieta whispered, her eyes darting across the crowd of scavengers, tech-runners, and grey-skinned addicts. "If anyone touches that arm, the game is over. You aren’t a person here, Henrique. You’re a high-value battery."

"I get it," Henrique muttered, his voice barely audible over the hum of a massive atmospheric generator nearby. "I’m a target. I’m a glitch. I’m a walking payday."

"Good. Don't forget it," she replied, her tone sharp. "And for the love of everything, don't look at their wrists. It’s an invitation for them to look at yours."

They wove through the crush of bodies. The air inside the bunker smelled of recycled oxygen and fear. Traders stood behind reinforced glass partitions, swapping vials of glowing, condensed liquid time for water, pills, or illegal weapon components.

"Look at them," Henrique said, gesturing toward a man huddled in a corner, his skin as gray as a tombstone. "They’re just waiting for the clock to hit zero."

"We all are," Julieta replied, leading him toward a booth marked with a jagged, neon-lit skull. "That’s why we’re here. We need a way to move through the transit corridors without the Enforcers pinging your signature. I need a ghost-pass."

"A ghost-pass? Is that real?"

"Everything is real if you have enough time to pay for it," she said.

They reached the stall. A man with a face scarred by chemical burns sat behind the glass, his fingers tapping rhythmically on a keypad.

"We need a Level Four bypass," Julieta said, leaning in. Her voice was steady, projecting the confidence of someone who had walked these tunnels a hundred times.

The dealer looked up, his eyes milky with cataracts. "Level Four? That’s for the transit hubs near the upper spires. You’re slum-trash. You don’t have the clearance."

"We don't need clearance, we need anonymity," she countered, sliding a small, data-chipped drive across the counter. "We’ve got the hours to cover the cost."

"I don't deal in hours," the man wheezed, his voice sounding like gravel in a grinder. "I deal in capacity. The grid is locked down tight after what happened in the plaza today. Everyone is buzzing about the 'drainer' that wiped two scouts clean."

Henrique’s heart slammed against his ribs. He felt the violet symbols on his wrist pulse, a subtle, cold vibration that echoed the brand on his shoulder.

"We’re just passing through," Henrique spoke up, his voice steady despite the adrenaline spiking in his veins. "We don't know anything about a drainer."

The dealer leaned forward, his gaze drifting from Julieta to Henrique. "You’ve got a nervous twitch, boy. And you’re holding that left arm like it’s made of glass. You sure you aren't the one they’re looking for?"

"Does it matter?" Julieta interrupted, her hand drifting toward the hilt of the blade at her hip. "Either you sell us the pass, or we find someone who is less interested in gossip."

"Bold," the dealer chuckled, a wet, rattling sound. "But you aren't the only ones watching the doors."

"What’s that supposed to mean?" Julieta asked, her body tensing.

"It means the Syndicate is running a sweep," the man said, pointing toward the heavy blast doors at the far end of the hall. "They’re not looking for traders anymore. They’re looking for a signature. And yours, girl... I remember your signature."

Julieta froze. The color drained from her face, leaving her features sharp and pale. "You’re mistaken."

"Am I?" The man stood up, his hand hovering over a silent alarm button. "Julieta Anjani. You were the best field-tech they ever trained until you decided to vanish with a cache of unlinked time. The bounty on your head is enough to buy a decade of breathing room."

"Henrique, run," Julieta hissed, not looking at him.

"What?"

"I said run!" She kicked the counter, sending the heavy, reinforced glass panel swinging into the dealer's face.

The room erupted in chaos. A siren began to wail, a deep, mournful sound that reverberated off the bunker walls.

"Get to the service vent!" Julieta shouted, drawing her blade. She moved with a speed that felt inhuman, slicing through the cables that held the security gate open.

"I’m not leaving you!" Henrique yelled, stumbling over a crate of scrap electronics.

"You have to! Your wrist is glowing, you idiot! You’re painting a target on my back!"

A group of Enforcers—men in heavy, matte-black armor with glowing visors—pushed through the crowd. They were moving in a disciplined formation, their weapons trained on the center of the room.

"There," one of them commanded, his voice amplified by a vocoder. "Target identified. Initiate containment."

"They’re not here for me," Henrique realized, watching as the Enforcers bypassed the general crowd to focus entirely on Julieta. "They’re here for you."

"I told you I wasn't a hero," Julieta grit out, blocking a strike from an Enforcer’s baton. The force of the blow rattled the floorboards. "Go, Henrique! Find the Spire! If you make it, you might actually be able to burn this whole city down!"

"No!" Henrique surged forward. He didn't think about the risk, didn't think about the brand or the weight of the stolen life. He just felt the hunger of the cuff.

He reached out, his left hand bare, the neon-red numbers blazing like a furnace. He didn't try to aim; he just let the vacuum take hold.

"Hey!" he screamed, his voice raw.

The Enforcers turned. Their visors flickered.

"Target B-One neutralized," the lead Enforcer said, his voice glitching.

"I’m not B-One!" Henrique roared. He lunged, slamming his palm against the lead Enforcer’s chest plate.

The result was violent. The air in the room warped, the sound of the siren drowning under the high-pitched whine of energy being siphoned. The Enforcer’s armor frosted over with a layer of instant ice, and then, with a sound like shattering glass, the man inside collapsed into a heap of rusted, dry-rotted metal and gray, lifeless powder.

The entire bunker went deathly silent. Every person in the room stopped, watching as the dust settled on the concrete.

"That," a voice boomed from the overhead speakers, "is a Level Five containment breach."

The massive blast doors began to slide shut, the heavy steel grinding against the floor.

Julieta stared at Henrique, her eyes wide with shock. "You... you shouldn't have done that."

"I wasn't going to let them take you," Henrique panted, his chest heaving. He looked at his wrist. The numbers were spinning out of control. 50:00:00... 60:00:00... The violet symbols were screaming now, burning into his skin.

"It doesn't matter now," Julieta said, looking up at the ceiling. A series of red lights began to rotate, bathing the entire room in the color of a fresh wound.

"Lockdown," she whispered, her voice devoid of hope. "They’ve sealed the bunker. Nobody gets out, and they’re going to purge the entire sector."

Henrique stood amidst the silence, his cuff pulsing with a light that seemed to devour the shadows of the bunker. He looked at the sealed door, then at the Enforcers who were closing in from every side.

"Let them come," he whispered, his voice sounding older, colder. "I think I’m finally starting to understand the arithmetic."

A handful of figures materialized from the shadows, ragged people armed with jagged rebar and archaic pulse-pistols. They looked tired, their eyes hollowed out by the same scarcity that defined every soul in this city."Who goes there?" a man shouted, leveling a weapon at them. He was scarred, his neck adorned with a faded bandage that likely hid a fading, low-charge cuff."We’re not with the Enforcers," Julieta said, her hands raised, though her stance remained ready to strike. "But there’s a strike team breathing down our necks. We’re in this together, or we’re both dead.""Together?" The man scoffed, stepping into the dim l

The tunnel ahead was a throat of rusted steel, dripping with condensation that hissed against the hot piping. Henrique clutched the data-pad to his chest, his knuckles white. The revelation—Prototype-0—echoed in his head like a death knell."Prototype-0," he muttered, his voice barely audible over the distant, rhythmic thrumming of the city's underbelly. "Does that mean I was never even a person, Julieta? Just a project?"Julieta stopped, her eyes fixed on the darkness ahead. She turned, her expression uncharacteristically grim. "Forget the labels, Henrique. If you think about who you were, you’ll lose focus on what you need to be. Right now, you’re the only thing standing between us and an eternal blackout.""I just feel like I'm breaking down, piece by piece," he said, his hand hovering over his cuff. "Every time I drain someone, it feels like I'm losing a memory. Like the space they used to occupy in the world is overwriting mine.""We’ll fix your head once we reach the Spire," she

The lab’s heavy steel doors didn’t just open; they groaned, buckled, and then slammed inward with a shriek of tortured metal. Henrique spun around, his hand instinctively flying to his wrist, the violet light of his cuff flaring into a blinding, hungry radiance."They found us!" Julieta snapped, her blade already in her hand, the steel catching the dim emergency light. "How did they track us through the lead-lined sub-level?""I don't know," Henrique shouted, his voice tight. "Maybe the Spire isn't just sending data—maybe it’s tracking me like a beacon!""Doesn't matter now. Get behind the server racks!" Julieta ordered, shoving him toward the back of the lab. "If they get within ten feet of you, don't hold back. Use the drain!""It's too much, Julieta!" Henrique yelled, sliding behind a row of monolithic, dust-covered processors. "If I go full out, I might fry the whole system. What if I lose control?""Better to lose control than to lose your head!" she shot back. "Look at them. The

His lungs burned. The air here was different—stale, metallic, and devoid of the choking soot from the surface. Julieta shoved him hard, her tactical boots skidding on the slick concrete. "If those blast doors lock completely, we’re finished. Do you hear me? Finished!"Henrique staggered, his eyes wild as he stared at the encroaching wall of black-armored Enforcers at the far end of the hall. "I can’t just walk through that wall of bullets, Julieta! They’re looking right at us!""Then give them something else to look at!" she yelled, ducking behind an overturned shipping crate as a volley of kinetic rounds hissed through the air, sparking against the steel beams above their heads.
