Chapter 15: The Awakened
Ryan was fully out of patience with Jake at this point."Jake. Have you actually thought this through?""Can you actually take care of her?""If it comes down to a life-or-death moment, are you willing to throw yourself in front of danger for her, the way her mother just did?""If the answer's yes genuinely, I'll respect that. That's a rare thing.""But if it's not, then she's not just losing her mom today. She's setting herself up to get abandoned twice."Jake's face fell, clearly rattled."I wasn't thinking that far ahead, man. I just figured it was the right call in the moment.""If you think it's the right thing to do, then you do it. Why'd you bring her to me? This some kind of guilt trip?""That's not what this is.""Ryan, I watched you get out of that mess with the infected earlier and thought man, this guy's the real deal.""Didn't expect you to have zero sense of responsibility, though.""I've never claimed to be some saint, Jake, and I'm sure as hell not going to let you gui
Chapter 14: Killing One to Warn the Rest
Lieutenant Lewis made the call fast abandon the first line of defense entirely.Every soldier fell back toward the second ring of armored vehicles, hastily forming a new perimeter. But a smaller perimeter meant fewer people inside it. As the infected closed in, waves of civilians surged toward the soldiers, desperate for cover.Lewis's jaw tightened. Something cold settled behind his eyes.He knew, without question, that letting this crowd break through the second line meant catastrophe for everyone — soldiers included. He climbed onto an armored vehicle, raised his rifle, and opened fire aiming low, at the crowd's feet.Warning shots, technically. Except some of them ran too fast, closed the gap too quickly, and paid for it with their lives.Still, the crowd kept coming. Panic had stripped half of them of anything resembling judgment they moved like animals with no sense of what was actually happening around them.Lewis grabbed a bullhorn."All units free fire, full range, no restric
Chapter 13: The Infected Attack
Once the hot porridge settled into their stomachs, the six of them started opening up a little. The mother and daughter were from a neighboring city regular people, nothing extraordinary. The young couple, meanwhile, had apparently been on their honeymoon when everything fell apart; most of the meal, they stayed wrapped up in their own bubble, quietly reassuring each other.Jake had joined the army's convoy earliest out of everyone at the table, and he was easily the most talkative of the group. Right now, he had the floor, and everyone else was content to listen.Ryan listened carefully Jake's rambling was packed with useful intel. Apparently the unit had set out from Boston, sweeping up survivors along the way. Early on, they'd resupplied weapons and ammo at locations Jake clearly still found unbelievable.Once cell service went dark entirely, resupply runs had slowed to a crawl. These days, encountering the infected wasn't strategy it was just bad luck, bumping into them at random.
Chapter 12: The Secret of Doomsday Evolution
The research team had clearly already turned Mr. Morrison's question over themselves."Mr. Morrison, we don't have any data on that specific angle yet. Can't draw a solid conclusion.""All we can say is that benign integration might just need more time, or a specific trigger, before any visible changes show up.""That said based on anomalies we've tracked across individual infected specimens""We've got three working theories on how evolution might branch.""The first is raw physical enhancement.""This type would see exponential gains in strength, speed, recovery the whole package.""The second is heightened perception.""Superhuman vision, hearing, maybe even something resembling a sixth sense.""The third is still purely speculative, but we're leaning toward elemental manipulation.""This type might gain some level of control over natural energy itself.""So basically what you're describing is warriors, assassins, and mages. Like something out of a video game.""Mr. Morrison... do
Chapter 11: The Vault Beneath the Estate
A cluster of people climbed down from the heavily guarded armored trucks parked in the convoy's center.Every one of them wore the same carefully blank expression the kind that said don't talk to me without a single word.Lieutenant Lewis, the same officer who'd spoken with Ryan the day before, was personally escorting them toward the Morrison estate.Ryan wasn't thrilled, watching that. The world had ended. Class hierarchy should've ended with it.As the group disappeared inside, a thought struck him he remembered spotting a listing for a miniature surveillance device back in the Exchange catalog. He pulled up the app.Remote Micro-Monitor Transmits audio and video in real time. Runs 10 hours per charge, recharges automatically while stored. 4 points.Ryan gritted his teeth and bought it.His balance dropped to 79. A small pang of regret hit him. That faded the second the thing materialized in his palm. The device was smaller than a grain of rice practically invisible once activated.
Chapter 10: War of Monsters
Compared to the strange calm settling over Clearwater Cove, the rest of North America was still a nightmare in motion.Mutated creatures tore into each other constantly, locked in an endless cycle of hunting and devouring. The thing that had chased Ryan through the streets wasn't rare, and it certainly wasn't the worst of what was out there.Somewhere out past the harbor, in the shadow of a great copper statue holding its torch aloft, two monsters were locked in battle. One stood over ten feet tall, humanoid, its entire body studded with pulsing tumors. Every swing of its arms sent gouts of green fluid splattering from the growths a corrosive slurry that hissed and smoked wherever it struck the ground. Its opponent looked like something dragged out of old mythology a massive three-headed hound, its fur pure white, each of its three mouths exhaling a constant plume of pale mist.Where the green acid met the white mist, the air itself sizzled, both substances seeming to eat away at each
