The shutters didn't fall open.

They slammed shut.

Monarch-grade steel, older than Cole, older than the Board - sealing the Sanctuary bunker with 312 kids, 610 Void eggs, and Mama K's newly evolved Ash Phoenix inside. Safe. For now.

On the wrong side of them were me, Zara, Marcus, Evelyn, Reyes, Jorm, Gale, and a half-melted membrane door.

And on the other side of that - the Board Army.

"Seal it!" Vale was shouting at the Rift Seal truck driver. "Seal the Deep Rift! Bury the source!"

The truck's dish - a black thing that looked like an inverted appraisal machine - swung toward the void tunnel Grim was holding open from the other side. Where my parents were.

If that dish fired, it would collapse the Deep Rift permanently. My parents, thirty survivors, 300 eggs, and Grim holding an ocean would be cut off forever. Buried alive in hunger.

Zara saw it before I did. "Liam, that's a Federal Deep Seal. It was used to close the first Rift fifteen years ago. It kills Monarch energy."

Marcus grabbed my arm. "Grim can't hold both the ocean and a seal blast."

He was right. Through the bond I felt Grim straining. Little Monarch... too heavy...

Codex whispered, Mom's voice, calm in crisis. You have 3120 points from the mass bond, Host. You are Level 20. You have 5 soul slots. You have only used two. Use the third.

I had never bonded a third beast without an egg. But I had the Void ocean itself in my hand - Grim's crown shard, still mirroring appraisal beams.

I slammed the shard into the ground in front of the Rift Seal truck.

"Gale! Fuse!"

Gale - Storm Talon, 2-Star, 5% Phoenix - shrieked and dove into the shard. Not into me. Into the Void.

[Temporary Fusion: Gale + Void Shard = Void Talon Phoenix - 3-Star Monarch Variant - Duration: 60 Seconds]

[New Skill Unlocked: Void Sever]

Gale exploded out, bigger, black wings with storm and starlight, a phoenix made of void wind. He screeched and slashed at the Seal truck's dish.

Void Sever - a skill that cuts contracts. The dish sparked, its seal beam flickering.

It bought us ten seconds.

I used them.

I ran straight at Director Vale - not his beasts, him. Street rule number one from being a courier in Old Tamer District: you don't fight the beast, you fight the handler who thinks he's safe behind it.

Vale laughed and his last Storm Giant swung at me.

Jorm intercepted. Winter Sovereign Dragon vs. Storm Giant, Mythic vs. SSS, but Jorm was fresh, bonded by choice, not collar. He froze the Giant's legs and threw him into the other two melted appraisal trucks.

Zara was right beside him, S-Rank heiress who chose trash tier, her hand bleeding from backlash but grinning, sharp-tongued even while fighting.

"Tell my father his brand is defective!" she shouted at Vale.

I reached Vale.

He was old, but A-Rank. He tried to punch me. I caught it - Level 20, soul slots expanded, Monarch Pressure active.

"Your Board told my parents trash can't be Mythic," I said, quiet, dominant when challenged, so only he could hear over Jorm roaring. "Look behind you."

Behind him, the shutters of the Sanctuary - the ones he'd tried to burn - opened from inside.

Not forced. Opened.

312 kids walked out. F-Rank kids. Couriers, noodle stand kids, rat catchers. Each holding a Void slime. Behind them, Mama K, holding an Ash Phoenix that used to be Soot.

And behind them, the void tunnel Grim was holding stabilized and widened, and out of it walked my parents, and thirty Monarch tamers in faded crests, carrying 300 more eggs.

My Dad, bad leg and all, looked at Vale and said, "We told you fifteen years ago. You can't seal potential."

The Board Army's own S-Rank tamers stared. Their own appraisal collars - the ones Cole put on heirs - were glitching from Gale's Void Sever. Showing their true potential. 8-Star. 9-Star.

One by one, they lowered their beasts.

CEO Cole was the first to kneel. Not to me. To Zara and Jorm.

"Zara... your dragon..."

"He's not yours to appraise anymore, Dad," Zara said.

Vale was alone.

Reyes stepped forward, Federal badge up. "Director Vale, under original Tamer Accords, Article 1, Monarch Sanctuary is Federal sovereign. You ordered a Deep Seal without Council vote. You are under arrest for attempted genocide of a Tamer class."

Board white coats tried to run. Bureau riot units - who'd been watching their own kids get true appraisals - blocked them.

Vale looked at me, at Grim who was now walking out of the Deep Rift, ocean calm behind him, crown restored, holding the hands of two baby slimes.

"You think this changes anything?" Vale hissed. "The national machines still say F. The Board still owns the market."

I held up my B-Rank license. MONARCH GUILD. Still wet. And flipped it over. On the back, Evelyn had printed something while we were in the Deep Rift.

A QR code. Linked to the Sanctuary console. Linked to true appraisal for any beast, free, no contract.

"Then we give them a new machine," I said.

I tossed the license into the air. Gale - back to normal Storm Talon, exhausted - caught it and flew, high over Old Tamer District, dropping paper copies. 312 kids did the same with their slimes. Leaflets that said: BRING YOUR TRASH BEAST. WE'LL SHOW YOU WHAT IT REALLY IS. OLD SUBWAY, MIDNIGHT.

The district that had been told it was worthless for a decade erupted. Not in riot. In evolution light. Puddle Slimes becoming Tide Sovereigns. Rust Rats becoming Steel Emperors.

Mama K's Ash Phoenix sang.

Vale was cuffed.

As they took him away, he laughed. "You have 48 hours. Board meets nationally. Five corporations. They will bring an SSS-Rank army. You have a subway bunker."

My Mom put her hand on my shoulder. "We had a bunker too, fifteen years ago. Then we had a city."

Grim, now Abyss Sovereign Slime King, stood behind me, six feet tall, crown bright, holding his two baby slimes, looking at the 312 new Monarch tamers who were looking at me.

Waiting for an order. From their vice-lead.

I felt it then - not Level, not rank. Charisma. The dominant calm that made people follow when everything says run.

"Guild rule number three," I said, voice carrying across the flooded lot, across the district that was evolving. "No one gets told they're trash ever again."

Above us, every appraisal billboard in Old Tamer District - Cole-owned, Board-owned - glitched, and for the first time in thirty years, showed true potential.

And far above that, on the Federal network, a notification pinged on every Tamer's phone in New Haven.

[New Guild Registered: MONARCH GUILD - Leader: Liam Shaw - Rank: A - Specialty: Infinite Evolution]

[Guild Hall: Old Tamer District - Open Recruitment: F-Rank Welcome]

The Board's 48 hours had just started.

Behind me, Grim whispered, Little Monarch, the Deep Rift is stable, but something woke up down there when we opened it. Something older than eggs.

Deep in the void tunnel, which should have been closed, a single eye opened.

Vale's voice coming down a collapsing void tunnel shouldn't be possible. • CHAPTER 13: Deep Rift

Stepping into Grim's Void Maw wasn't falling. It was being remembered. The void didn't have color. It had memory. For a second I was five again, burning with Rift Fever, Mom's hand on my forehead, Dad saying "hold on, little Monarch." Then I was ten, getting stamped F-Rank while Grim, hidden in my backpack as a trash slime, pulsed against my back saying not trash. Then I landed. Not on ground. On water. Black water that held me up. An ocean of slime - Void ocean - stretching forever under a sky that was the inside of a rift, stars made of appraisal errors. And in the middle of it, an island. Made of stasis pods. And tents. And a kitchen table with two mugs.People looked up. Twenty, maybe thirty. All older, all in old Monarch crests, faded. Tamers who were supposed to be executed fifteen years ago.In front of them, two people who I only knew from a holo.Mom didn't look fifteen years older. She looked tired. Dad had a beard now, and a Void Slime - not Grim, bigger, scarred - on his s

  • CHAPTER 12: Board

Three Storm Giants dropped into the Sanctuary.6-Star each. SSS-Rank Board beasts. Ten feet tall, bodies made of living hurricane, eyes like pressure gauges. The kind of beast they use to put down rogue A-Rank tamers. The kind my parents faced fifteen years ago.Behind them, Director Vale. Not in Cole black. In Board white - five corporations stitched into one coat. Old, bald, scarred throat from a beast backlash. The man who signed my parents' execution order."Commander Reyes, you are interfering with corporate recovery of stolen Monarch property," Vale said, voice like gravel. "That slime king, those eggs, that dragon with a broken contract - all Cole intellectual property."Reyes stood at the ripped membrane door, her own beast - an A-Rank Iron Falcon - screaming above her, but she was outranked. "This is a Federal Sanctuary under the original Tamer Accords. You need a warrant from all five families to -""I am the warrant," Vale said, and his Storm Giants stepped forward.Zara di

  • CHAPTER 11: Sanctuary

The door wasn't a door. It was a membrane. The concrete of the subway tunnel rippled like slime - like Grim's skin - and parted when I got close. No handle. No scanner. It recognized Monarch blood.Behind it wasn't a room. It was a bunker the size of Warehouse 4, buried under Old Tamer District since before the city was built.Lights came on automatically. Cold, white, Federal-grade, but old. Fifteen years old.Rows. Hundreds of rows of stasis pods, floor to ceiling, each one holding a slime egg. Not Shadow Slimes. These were black, void-black, with starlight inside, just like Grim's core. Monarch eggs.Evelyn made a noise that was half gasp, half sob. "This is... this is the Monarch Sanctuary. The Bureau said it was a myth. That the Monarch team destroyed their research before execution."Zara's hand went to Jorm's neck. Even Jorm went quiet. Dragons know when they're in a graveyard.Marcus whispered, "Liam, look."In the center of the bunker was a table. Not a lab table. A kitchen t

  • CHAPTER 10: King

Grim had never spoken out loud. For fifteen years he'd been a trash slime. Mute. Kicked. Appraised as F. Even after evolving to Battle Slime, he only spoke through the bond, one word at a time. Now he had a mouth. Wobbly, made of void-black slime, but a mouth."I remember you, little Monarch. Do you remember me now?"The memory hit me harder than soul burn. Not a System screen. A real memory. I was five. Burning up with Rift Fever - the disease kids get when they live too close to the first Echo Rifts. My parents - Mom in a Tamer lab coat, Dad with a Monarch crest on his shoulder - crying over me. No healer could fix it.Dad held an egg. Not a beast egg. A Monarch egg. Black, pulsing with void light. Stolen from Cole's vault."If we bond it to him, it will eat the fever," Mom whispered. "But Cole will kill us for stealing a Mythic.""Let them," Dad said, and put the egg on my chest. The egg cracked and poured into me - not as a beast, as a shadow that sealed itself over my heart.
