Chapter 1

Today is my fifth anniversary with Isabella Milton—the girlfriend I’ve been dating since our first year of university. To celebrate five years together, I planned to gift her a $500 necklace.

I held the small box tightly as I approached her room when a sudden sound stopped me cold:

“Oh… my God! baby. Just like that! Please continue"

My feet froze. My fingers clenched around the necklace box.

“Baby, why don’t you break up with that good-for-nothing boyfriend of yours and marry me? He can’t even satisfy you the way I do!”

Let’s forget about that Xavier! He’s so irrelevant!” the voice was filled with so much pleasure. “Ouch!”

I recognized that voice instantly.

No. No. Isabella would never cheat on me. She loved me. She wouldn’t do this—

My knuckles whitened as I gripped the doorknob. Without knocking, I shoved the door open.

BOOM.

My eyes went wide.

There, on our bed, my girlfriend Isabella lay with her legs spread wide while another man thrust in and out of her. The necklace box slipped from my numb fingers and hit the floor.

“Isa… Isabella?!”

The young man jerked off her body and hastily put on his clothes.

Isabella scrambled to cover her body with the bedspread. “Xavier, what are you doing here? And why didn’t you knock before stepping inside?”

For five years I had been completely loyal. I had never cheated. I had never even complimented another woman. The anger boiling in my chest made my voice tremble.

“After everything I did for you, you’re cheating on me with another—”

STRUCK!

Isabella rose from the bed and delivered a vicious slap across my face, cutting my words short.

“One more word against me or Carl, and I will deal with you in a way you will never understand.”

My gaze shifted to the young man standing beside her, casually stroking her hair.

Carl Wilson— The Dean’s son.

A rumor had circulated in our first year that Isabella and Carl were dating, but she had sworn those rumors were lies. She had told me I was the only man in her life.

Now I knew better. Those rumors had been true all along.

Carl’s hand slid lower her body, “Hold on, babe. Isn’t this your good-for-nothing boyfriend?”

Isabella crossed her arms, a smug smile curling her lips. “Yeah, he’s the one. Xavier—my curse in the form of a boyfriend.”

Carl’s eyes landed on the fallen necklace box. I tried to hide it, but he was already stepping forward. He snatched it up, examined it, and laughed.

“Look, babe. He brought you a gift.”

He called the necklace cheap and kept laughing. Isabella dragged it from his hand and threw it onto the floor.

“When will you ever get tired, Xavier?!” she screamed. “These worthless items you bring for me doesn't change the fact that you are a poor simp!”

She turned and seductively ran her fingers along Carl’s jaw. “Carl Wilson is the best thing that ever happened to me. He spends so much money on me. Do you honestly think I want to be with a man like you? Never!”

I used to be the rich son of one of the most respected families in the country. Back then I was the hottest guy on campus—girls flirted with me constantly and asked me out.

That was when I met Isabella. I spent thousands, then millions, on her. I even bought her this house.

Then one day during our second semester, a call came in. One of our biggest investors had scammed us. My father’s company went bankrupt overnight. We owed billions to banks and other firms. To repay the debt we were forced to sell the company and every piece of property we owned. My father fled the city to escape the creditors.

After that, Isabella’s attitude toward me changed completely. She started giving me cold looks and distant body language. Once she even told me:

“If you’d make me dinner every night, serve me breakfast every morning, and help me with all my assignments, I might consider not abandoning you.”

So I became a simp. I did everything she demanded, exactly the way she wanted it.

And after all of that, she was still cheating on me.

I shook my head slowly. “So you did all of this… simply because I’m poor?”

“Exactly!” Her voice rose. “You know what? I’m done with all of this!”

She pulled off the engagement ring I had given her off her finger and threw it at my face. “I’m ending everything between us! I no longer want to be your girlfriend!”

The ring bounced off my cheek and clattered to the floor. I didn’t pick it up. My eyes stayed locked on hers.

“Do you seriously want to end everything between us?”

Carl stepped forward and pointed a finger at my chest, voice dripping with contempt. “What does it look like to you? Isabella wants to end everything that ever existed between the two of you. Does she look like she’s joking?”

On any other day I would have cried. I would have begged her to take me back. But Not this time. This time I was finished.

I pulled the matching ring off my own finger and threw it onto the floor beside hers. “Alright then. If this is what you want, I’m ready for it. I want to end this relationship too.”

The smile on Isabella’s face vanished for a split second before she forced it back into place.

She let out a dry scoff. “You—Xavier Milton—are ending things with me?” She laughed without humor. “I’m sure you’ll be back on your knees begging me to take you back. I give you twenty-four hours. You’ll come crawling.”

Whenever she had threatened to leave in the past, I had always run after her and pleaded. This time I simply clenched my fists.

“You will regret this.”

I turned and walked out of the room, their laughter following me down the hallway. I didn’t stop until I reached the bridge beside campus.

I stood there crying, every scene of the betrayal replaying in my mind. Students walked past and stared at me like I was some pathetic joke.

“Isn’t he the poorest simp in our university?”

“Yeah, that’s him. Xavier Steel. The one who’s been a dog for Isabella Milton for five years.”

“I heard he doesn’t even have five hundred dollars in his account.”

Their words snapped something inside me.

I grabbed a bottle of alcohol from a nearby store and started drinking, desperate to drown the betrayal and the breakup. But every moment kept flashing behind my eyes.

Finally I slammed the bottle down and stood up, furious.

“God, why do I have to be a simp? Why did my family have to go bankrupt? Why do I have to be a poor man?” I raked my hands through my hair in frustration.

If I just died… if I left this world… I would never have to be a simp again.

I grabbed the bridge railing and stared down at the dark river below.

Since I couldn’t be rich in this life, what was the point of staying alive?
