The car was a Cole Phantom. $300k, custom rift-plated. The kind of car only S-Rank corporate heirs drive in Old Tamer District because they want you to know they don't belong here.
The window rolled down and Zara Cole looked out at us like we were a stain on her route.
I'd seen her on the Tamer Academy billboards. Heiress and Combat Captain of Cole Conglomerate, S-Rank Prodigy Tamer at 24. Frost Wyrm bonded since she was sixteen. Face of three beast supplement brands. The girl who was born with everything I was told I'd never have.
Up close she was colder. Silver hair cut short for combat, sharp eyes, academy combat jacket with the Cole crest ripped off at the shoulder - like she was trying to make a point.
Her eyes went from Evelyn's contract in my hand, to Marcus, to Grim shrunk in his carrier.
"So it's true," she said. Her voice was dominant, sharp-tongued, used to people flinching. "The F-Rank courier made a Battle Slime. My father said you stole a core."
"I didn't steal anything," I said. "Your Director Grant locked me in a C-Rank rift and tried to let me die. Check the Bureau arrest log."
She smiled, but it wasn't friendly. Competitive.
"I did. That's why I'm here, not my father's lawyers. Grant was sloppy. You're interesting."
She opened the car door and stepped out. She moved like a fighter, not an heiress. She walked straight up to me - too close - and looked down at Grim.
Grim pulsed. He didn't like her. Through the bond I felt a low growl. Dragon.
Zara's own carrier - black, corporate-issue, humming with cold - shook. Something inside coughed. A wet, heavy sound, like ice breaking in lungs.
Marcus stepped back. "Whoa. Is that -"
"My partner," Zara snapped, and for a second her pride cracked. She tapped the carrier open just an inch.
Inside was a Frost Wyrm. At least, it should have been. S-Rank, six meters long, wings like frozen sails. This one was curled tight, scales dull grey instead of white, frost falling off it like dead skin. It breathed shallow and black veins pulsed under its jaw.
Evelyn inhaled. "De-evolution syndrome. Terminal stage. I've only seen it in papers Cole buried."
Zara's head whipped to Evelyn. "You -"
"I was Chief Evolution Researcher before your family got me fired for saying exactly this was happening," Evelyn said, blunt. "Your beast is dying because of the Bloodline Contract your family puts on all heir beasts. It caps them at S-Rank to keep them controllable. It's killing him."
Zara flinched. That hit. For all her arrogance, she actually loved that wyrm.
She looked back at me. Pride vs. desperation fighting in her face. Desperation won for a half-second.
"My father said you can make trash evolve infinitely. Prove it. Evolve him." She pointed at Grim. "No, evolve mine. If you can cure him, I'll -"
"You'll what?" I cut her off. Calm, dominant when challenged. I wasn't going to be bought by the same family that blacklisted me ten minutes ago. "Work for Cole? Be your pet project? That's what your father wants, right? Buy the anomaly."
Her eyes flashed. No one talks to Zara Cole like that.
"Careful, F-Rank," she said, stepping even closer. "I am S-Rank. You are Level 5 with a slime that got lucky. My father wanted to send an acquisition team. I told him I'd handle it personally."
"So handle it."
Marcus made a small squeak. Evelyn actually took a half-step back. Even Grim puffed up.
Zara stared at me, surprised I didn't fold. Then, slowly, she smiled again. This time it was real. Sharp, competitive, like she'd finally found someone worth fighting.
"You're not a pushover. Good. The arena stories made you sound soft." She pulled out a black card - Underground Tamer Arena, VIP challenger seal. "Tomorrow night. D-Rank Pit, but no rank limits. You and your trash slime vs. me and mine. No Bureau, no contracts, no daddy's money."
"If you lose," she said, tapping my chest with the card, "you come work for Cole. Exclusive. You evolve only what we tell you to evolve."
"And if I win?" I asked.
"If you win..." She leaned in, voice dropping so only I could hear over the street noise. "I'll give you the name of the Federal officer who overwrote your talent file from SSS to F fifteen years ago. My family keeps records of every favor the Bureau owes us. Your file is one of them."
My blood went cold.
Codex whispered in my head: Host. That is the information we need. Accept.
Zara thought she was offering me a bribe. She didn't understand. She was offering me the first thread to my parents, to why I was erased.
I took the card.
"Tomorrow night. And Zara?"
"What?"
"Bring a better carrier for him. That one's killing him faster."
Her pride flared again, but she didn't argue. She looked at her dying wyrm, then at Grim, who was now fully expanded to Battle Slime form, arms crossed, staring her down.
"...Fine. Tomorrow," she said, and got back in her car. As it pulled away, I saw her hands shaking on the carrier.
Marcus let out a breath he'd been holding for a minute straight. "Dude. You just trash-talked Zara Cole. The Zara Cole. She has a billboard over our apartment!"
Evelyn was already scanning the air where Zara's car had been. "Her wyrm has [Curse: Corporate Bloodline Contract] and [Stage 3 De-evolution]. If you can break that curse in the arena... you'll prove my theory live to half the underground."
She looked at me, eyes intense.
"But Liam, if you fuse your energy with Grim to fight an S-Rank Frost Wyrm while you're Level 5, you could burn your soul slot. You could die."
Grim walked over and bumped his big slime head against my bandaged hand. Not alone.
In my head, the System pinged. Not an evolution notification. A warning.

Someone else was looking at my erased file right now.
And from down the street, the air cracked open again.

CHAPTER 15: Monarch Guild
The shutters didn't fall open. They slammed shut.Monarch-grade steel, older than Cole, older than the Board - sealing the Sanctuary bunker with 312 kids, 610 Void eggs, and Mama K's newly evolved Ash Phoenix inside. Safe. For now.On the wrong side of them were me, Zara, Marcus, Evelyn, Reyes, Jorm, Gale, and a half-melted membrane door. And on the other side of that - the Board Army."Seal it!" Vale was shouting at the Rift Seal truck driver. "Seal the Deep Rift! Bury the source!"The truck's dish - a black thing that looked like an inverted appraisal machine - swung toward the void tunnel Grim was holding open from the other side. Where my parents were.If that dish fired, it would collapse the Deep Rift permanently. My parents, thirty survivors, 300 eggs, and Grim holding an ocean would be cut off forever. Buried alive in hunger.Zara saw it before I did. "Liam, that's a Federal Deep Seal. It was used to close the first Rift fifteen years ago. It kills Monarch energy."Marcus grab
CHAPTER 14: Distribution
Vale's voice coming down a collapsing void tunnel shouldn't be possible. Board tech shouldn't reach the Deep Rift.Unless they'd been siphoning it for thirty years and knew exactly how."Tunnel's closing!" Zara shouted, Jorm roaring and blasting Absolute Zero at the edges to freeze it open.Grim was on his knees in the Void ocean, both hands submerged, stabilizing the entire Deep Rift. If he let go, the island and my parents and thirty Monarch survivors would fall back into hunger."Go!" Dad shouted at me. "The eggs! The Sanctuary! We can hold here for ten minutes!"Mom grabbed my face, quick. "Don't be a hero, be a Monarch. Monarchs share."I didn't argue. I grabbed Zara's wrist, Zara grabbed Marcus, Marcus grabbed Evelyn and Reyes, and Grim - with a roar that shook the void - tore a piece of his own crown off and threw it at me.The crown shard became a door.We fell out of the Deep Rift and landed hard back in the Sanctuary bunker. And the lockdown had failed.Steel shutters were h
CHAPTER 13: Deep Rift
Stepping into Grim's Void Maw wasn't falling. It was being remembered. The void didn't have color. It had memory. For a second I was five again, burning with Rift Fever, Mom's hand on my forehead, Dad saying "hold on, little Monarch." Then I was ten, getting stamped F-Rank while Grim, hidden in my backpack as a trash slime, pulsed against my back saying not trash. Then I landed. Not on ground. On water. Black water that held me up. An ocean of slime - Void ocean - stretching forever under a sky that was the inside of a rift, stars made of appraisal errors. And in the middle of it, an island. Made of stasis pods. And tents. And a kitchen table with two mugs.People looked up. Twenty, maybe thirty. All older, all in old Monarch crests, faded. Tamers who were supposed to be executed fifteen years ago.In front of them, two people who I only knew from a holo.Mom didn't look fifteen years older. She looked tired. Dad had a beard now, and a Void Slime - not Grim, bigger, scarred - on his s
CHAPTER 12: Board
Three Storm Giants dropped into the Sanctuary.6-Star each. SSS-Rank Board beasts. Ten feet tall, bodies made of living hurricane, eyes like pressure gauges. The kind of beast they use to put down rogue A-Rank tamers. The kind my parents faced fifteen years ago.Behind them, Director Vale. Not in Cole black. In Board white - five corporations stitched into one coat. Old, bald, scarred throat from a beast backlash. The man who signed my parents' execution order."Commander Reyes, you are interfering with corporate recovery of stolen Monarch property," Vale said, voice like gravel. "That slime king, those eggs, that dragon with a broken contract - all Cole intellectual property."Reyes stood at the ripped membrane door, her own beast - an A-Rank Iron Falcon - screaming above her, but she was outranked. "This is a Federal Sanctuary under the original Tamer Accords. You need a warrant from all five families to -""I am the warrant," Vale said, and his Storm Giants stepped forward.Zara di
CHAPTER 11: Sanctuary
The door wasn't a door. It was a membrane. The concrete of the subway tunnel rippled like slime - like Grim's skin - and parted when I got close. No handle. No scanner. It recognized Monarch blood.Behind it wasn't a room. It was a bunker the size of Warehouse 4, buried under Old Tamer District since before the city was built.Lights came on automatically. Cold, white, Federal-grade, but old. Fifteen years old.Rows. Hundreds of rows of stasis pods, floor to ceiling, each one holding a slime egg. Not Shadow Slimes. These were black, void-black, with starlight inside, just like Grim's core. Monarch eggs.Evelyn made a noise that was half gasp, half sob. "This is... this is the Monarch Sanctuary. The Bureau said it was a myth. That the Monarch team destroyed their research before execution."Zara's hand went to Jorm's neck. Even Jorm went quiet. Dragons know when they're in a graveyard.Marcus whispered, "Liam, look."In the center of the bunker was a table. Not a lab table. A kitchen t
CHAPTER 10: King
Grim had never spoken out loud. For fifteen years he'd been a trash slime. Mute. Kicked. Appraised as F. Even after evolving to Battle Slime, he only spoke through the bond, one word at a time. Now he had a mouth. Wobbly, made of void-black slime, but a mouth."I remember you, little Monarch. Do you remember me now?"The memory hit me harder than soul burn. Not a System screen. A real memory. I was five. Burning up with Rift Fever - the disease kids get when they live too close to the first Echo Rifts. My parents - Mom in a Tamer lab coat, Dad with a Monarch crest on his shoulder - crying over me. No healer could fix it.Dad held an egg. Not a beast egg. A Monarch egg. Black, pulsing with void light. Stolen from Cole's vault."If we bond it to him, it will eat the fever," Mom whispered. "But Cole will kill us for stealing a Mythic.""Let them," Dad said, and put the egg on my chest. The egg cracked and poured into me - not as a beast, as a shadow that sealed itself over my heart. A sl
