Chapter 1
The First Shipment
The morning air in the shop was stagnant, smelling faintly of old parchment and the dried herbs Veydran used to keep the moths away. Veydran Korralis wiped a bead of sweat from his forehead, his knuckles white as he gripped the courier’s ledger. The System notification a translucent, glowing blue pane hovered in the air, mocking him with its persistent hum.
"Sign here, shopkeep," the courier grunted, leaning against the doorframe. "It’s a heavy one. Magical insurance, too. You don’t want to know what the courier guild charges for shipping live cargo across the rift."
Veydran scribbled his name, his hand shaking. "I didn't order live cargo. I ordered a tier-one companionship beast. A puppy. Maybe a fox."
"Don't look at me, mate," the courier said, sliding a massive, iron-reinforced crate onto the floor. It hit the wooden planks with a thud that rattled Veydran’s display cases. "The System handles the procurement. I just provide the muscles. Good luck with the return policy."
Veydran watched the courier walk out, his heart hammering against his ribs. The crate vibrated. Deep, guttural growls resonated from within, sounding more like shifting tectonic plates than anything that belonged in a pet shop.
"Okay," Veydran whispered, his voice cracking. "Okay, stay calm. It’s probably just a particularly enthusiastic pug."
"You’re talking to yourself again, Veydran," he muttered to himself, stepping closer to the crate. "Just open the latch. Take the beast out. Put it in the containment pen. Simple. Profitable."
He reached for the heavy iron bolt. As soon as his fingers touched the metal, the vibration spiked. The wood groaned under a sudden, intense heat. Veydran jumped back, his eyes widening as a plume of thick, grey smoke curled through the gaps in the crate.
"Wait, wait! Don't do that!" Veydran shouted, grabbing a pair of heavy leather gauntlets from the counter. "You’re going to set the inventory on fire!"
CRACK.
The side of the crate blew outward, showering the shop in splinters. Through the smoke emerged a creature no larger than a house cat, its scales a shimmering, molten obsidian. It had wings that were far too large for its body and eyes like flicking embers.
"Oh, sweet Mother of Mercy," Veydran hissed, backing into his shelf of rare incenses.
The creature didn't mew. It let out a sharp, piercing screech that sounded like grinding metal, and then—whoosh. A stream of blue-white flame erupted from its snout, incinerating a stack of inventory scrolls on the far wall.
"Hey! Stop that! That’s worth five gold!" Veydran scrambled toward the fire, grabbing a bucket of damp sand. "You absolute menace! Do you have any idea how hard it is to source vellum in this economy?"
The dragon skittered across the ceiling, its claws digging deep gouges into the rafters. It looked down at Veydran, tilted its head, and unleashed another blast of fire, this time hitting the velvet curtains that draped the shop’s rear entrance.
"No, no, no!" Veydran lunged, batting at the flames with his apron. "Get down from there! You’re ruining the aesthetic! You’re supposed to be a puppy! Who sends a dragon to a shopkeeper?"
The creature descended, landing heavily on the counter. It snarled, smoke pouring from its nostrils, and snapped its jaws at Veydran’s hand. Veydran recoiled, tripping over a stool and landing hard on the floorboards.
"Look, buddy, I don’t know what your problem is," Veydran wheezed, sitting up and clutching his chest. "I’m just trying to keep the lights on. If you burn this place down, we’re both going to be homeless. How about we just… talk about this? Like reasonable beings?"
The dragon chirped, a sound that was surprisingly bird-like, and set its gaze on a crystal vial of essence of moonlight. It tapped the glass with a claw, its tail swishing dangerously.
"Don’t you dare touch that," Veydran warned, his voice low. "That’s the only thing keeping the ledger balanced this month. Drop it."
The dragon ignored him, its tail looping around the vial.
"Okay, look, I’m not playing this game." Veydran scrambled to his feet and navigated the Menu interface with frantic taps, his eyes darting across the neon-blue lines of text. "Shop items… supplies… emergency beast containment… where is it? Ah, found it. Soothing Milk. Yes. Please tell me this actually works."
He tapped 'Confirm' on the purchase. A small, golden bottle appeared on the counter with a soft pop.
"Here," Veydran said, holding it out with a shaking hand. "Drink up. Please, just drink it."
The dragon sniffed the air, its nostrils flaring. The aggressive posture vanished instantly. It hopped off the counter, trotting toward Veydran with an unsettling amount of grace for a creature that had been setting his shop on fire moments ago. It nudged the bottle with its snout.
"Yeah, that’s it," Veydran murmured, loosening his grip. "See? We can be friends. Just… don't melt my boots, alright?"
The dragon lapped at the milk, its glowing eyes locking onto Veydran’s. As it drank, a strange, warm sensation flooded Veydran’s mind—a feeling of sudden, overwhelming belonging. It was as if a tether had been snapped into place, connecting his own pulse to the frantic, fiery rhythm of the dragon's heart.
The dragon finished the bottle and let out a long, contented sigh, curling into a ball at Veydran’s feet. It rested its head on his boot, its scales radiating a comforting, gentle heat.
"You’re imprinted on me now, aren't you?" Veydran whispered, reaching down to tentatively stroke the creature's jagged spine. "You’re going to be a nightmare to feed. And my insurance premiums are going to skyrocket."
The dragon hummed, a sound that vibrated through Veydran’s boot. It wasn't a growl anymore; it was a purr.
Veydran sighed, leaning his head back against the counter. He looked at the scorched wall and the ruined curtains, then down at the sleeping, obsidian-scaled beast. He was broke, his shop was a disaster, and he had just accidentally acquired a apex predator.
"Well," he muttered to the empty room. "At least it’s not a puppy. Puppies chew the furniture."
Just then, a sharp, rhythmic pounding echoed against the front door.
"Veydran! Open up, mate!"
Veydran froze. He recognized the voice. It was Jhaevik, the local spice merchant. He was nosy, loud, and currently, he was sniffing the air with palpable suspicion.
"Veydran, are you in there?" Jhaevik called out, his voice muffled by the wood. "I’m standing out here in the street, and I swear on my life, it smells like a dragon just had a bonfire in your back room. Did you set the shop on fire again, or did you get a delivery you didn't tell anyone about?"
Veydran looked at the dragon, then at the charred curtains. He scrambled to his feet, shielding the sleeping creature with his body.
"Everything’s fine, Jhaevik!" Veydran called out, trying to sound as casual as possible while his heart drummed in his ears. "Just… a bit of an accident with an experimental incense burner! Nothing to worry about!"
"An accident that smells like sulfur?" Jhaevik pushed against the door, the hinges groaning under his weight. "Open the door, Veydran. If you’ve got a dragon in there, we need to talk about the district zoning laws. You know the council doesn't allow fire-starters within city walls!"
Veydran stood his ground, his hand tightening around the dragon's small, warm shoulder. "I said I’m fine, Jhaevik! Come back tomorrow!"
"Tomorrow?" Jhaevik scoffed, his shadow looming large against the frosted glass of the door. "I smell gold, Veydran. And I smell trouble. Open the damn door before I fetch the watchmen!"

The air in the shop felt thin, pulled tight by the heavy, velvet-clad presence of Othven Rask. Veydran gripped the edge of his counter so hard his knuckles turned white, the polished wood groaning under the pressure. High above, the crystalline habitats hummed, a dissonant chord of magical energy that seemed to pulse in time with his own racing heart."You really don't understand, do you, Master Rask?" Veydran said, his voice barely a rasp. "These aren't inventory items. You can't just slap a saddle on a storm-whelp or expect a dragon to trot along like a draft horse."Rask didn't blink. He reached out with a gloved hand, tracing the rim of a nearby jar of dried herbs, his expression one of bored, aristocratic calculation. "I don't need a horse, Veydran. I need power. I need something that can traverse the Borderlands without falling prey to the local rot. Whether it’s a beast, a monster, or an Abyssal anomaly, it’s all just equipment to me. And equipment, as we both know, has a price

The silence of the shop was short-lived. Veydran had barely finished sweeping the last of the glass shards into a pile when a sound—a wet, rhythmic slap-thwip—echoed against the front door. He paused, the broom hovering mid-air."Did you hear that, Coal?" Veydran muttered, glancing toward the counter. The dragon tilted its head, its ember-colored eyes narrowing. Another slap-thwip followed, then a dozen more, like rhythmic, gelatinous footsteps pressing against the wood.Veydran dropped the broom and scurried to the window, peering through the small, dust-streaked gap in his curtains. His jaw dropped. "Oh, you have to be kidding me. Is that a slime migration?"Outside, the street was cluttered with at least a dozen translucent, blue-hued slimes, all pulsing with a soft, bioluminescent light. They weren't just passing by; they were congregating, their rounded bodies pressing against the storefront as if pulled by a magnetic force."Why are they here?" Veydran hissed, turning to the dra

The door clicked shut, the heavy iron bolt sliding home with a finality that echoed like a hammer strike. Veydran leaned his forehead against the cool wood, his breath hitching in his chest. His heart was a frantic drum, beating a rhythm of pure, unadulterated stress."Okay," Veydran whispered, his voice trembling. "Okay. That was a collector. A literal, high-society monster-collector. Why does my life sound like the prologue to a tragedy?"Coal, the obsidian dragon, shifted on his shoulder, his scales warm and vibrating with a soft, rhythmic hum. Spark, the thunder-wolf, let out a low, static-filled yip from behind the counter.Veydran didn't move for a long moment. He listened to the quiet of the street, the distant clatter of carriage wheels, and the unsettling stillness of the shop. Then, just as he started to lift his head, a soft thud sounded against the front glass. Not a knock. Not a push. A touch. His blood turned to ice. He hadn't latched the secondary lock. The door creaked

The Beast Tamer's Unwanted Nursery Supplier And Secret
The silence of the shop was no longer the oppressive, sulfur-tinged weight of terror; it was a hungry, vibrating stillness. Veydran sat behind the counter, staring at the two predators caged in the center of the room. The obsidian dragon, which he had mentally dubbed 'Coal,' was currently sharpening its claws against the magically-hardened iron bars. Beside it, the thunder-wolf, now known as 'Spark,' was pacing in a tight circle, its fur crackling with an audible, rhythmic snap-pop-snap."You’re both insatiable," Veydran muttered, rubbing his temples. "I gave you the last of the salted jerky an hour ago. You’re not supposed to be burning calories this fast."The dragon let out a low, dissonant trill and nudged the iron bar with its snout. It wasn't a growl; it was a demand."I know, I know," Veydran sighed, pulling up the flickering blue interface of the System. "I’m looking, aren't I? But the standard 'Beast Pellets' you two are eating are practically cardboard for your metabolisms.
